Help Needed: AVI Format?

hi guys.
our local TV stations require HD/HDV music video files in AVI format (as they put it, without specifying any codecs), while i normally export videos i make as QuickTime movie files with Apple Intermediate Codec or DVCProHD codec. they use PCs and can't open my Mac-born .MOV files with the mentioned codecs. in the long list of my QuickTime 7 Pro there is no option for AVI. Any solution to this? What's AVI? is that a high-quality codec? how can i export my video footage from Final Cut Pro as AVI? is that an obtainable / downloadable codec?
cheers.

Send the video from FCP to Compressor. (This is the only way I know how to do this. I'm sure there is a proper way.) Pick Prores (any codec) as a codec. Then click on the second tab from the left in the Inspector window. Under the File Format drop down menu pick Quicktime Export Components. Then from the Encoder drop down menu pick AVI. More than likely the station can work with a BMP file. Call them and make sure.
The codecs you gave them are from Final Cut Pro (Mac only program) and since they are on PC's this doesn't help them.
.AVI's and .Mov's files aren't codecs, but containers for the video's to sit in. For the station to tell you to give them an AVI file with no specs on a codec is another shoot in the dark.
Quicktime pro does have a AVI option: Quicktime-->File-->Export--> Export drop down menu, AVI. More than likely the station can work with a BMP file. Call them and make sure.

  • Help needed for Formatted Search

    Hai Experts,
would like to ask you some clarification on Formatted Search. In the
query I found $http://$44.2.1 given in the criteria part.
In some articles it was mentioned that, the 44 meant for the table
connected with the form and 2 is field index and so on.
Can you please explain how to find out those numbers and field index.

  • Help needed with formatting an external drive

Like some of you exoerienced problems with my external drive on upgrade to 10.5.5. To cut a long story short, bought a Western Digital 500GB Studio already configured for mac. Backed up with time machine. The drive does not boot on startup of my Intel iMac as its the partition map is APM and not GUID. For some reason, when I access the drive in Disk Utility and select Partition, the Option button is greyed out i.e. read only and therefore I can't select GUID. Any ideas how to resolve this?

You cannot boot from a TM backup in case you did not know that.
In order to re-partition the drive for GUID you must:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Select the number of partitions from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Be aware that this is a destructive process and all data currently on the drive will be lost.

  • Help needed after format and re-install

It became necessary to erase my HD and reinstall the OS and software. Generally speaking it went well, but I have run into a few glitches.
I used to be able to use the scroll button (by clicking on the button) on my Logitech wireless mouse to jump between the program I was using, the the rest of the programs that were running, can't do that now. When I migrated my user information I lost a lot of my most current mail messages and a couple of folders in my mail account, can I get them back?

Reinstall your Logitech software which installs an extension. You did not migrate everything you needed, so if you have software that doesn't work properly then just reinstall the software. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

You can manually transfer files from your backup or use Migration Assistant to transfer your files and user accounts. Note that if you created a user account with the same short name then Migration Assistant will not migrate the account without first renaming it. If you don't want that to happen, then create a new admin account with a different short name. Log into that account then delete the account you are now using. Then use Migration Assistant to transfer your files and user accounts. When that's done you can log out of the temporary account. Log into the migrated account, verify it has admin status and set it for automatic login. Restart the computer to be sure you are now using your migrated account. Then delete the temporary account.

  • Help needed in formating the text using HTML tags in reports 10g

    Hi all,
I have a situation here. We have an application which prints out Reports with a few lines of text in it. This text is entered by the user through our forms application in a field. That particular text is stored in each row of a particular long column. Here I want to modify the text, while printing, on the report like underline, bold, italics etc,.
As of now I am using the HTML tags, in the forms, to do so as most the times the text in the report is same.
I want to know if this can be done by the user itself while he is entering the data in the field through the form.
Thanks in advance . I will explain you more clearly if you need.

  • Internationalization : Help needed for formating chinese characters

anyone has any exeprience in formating english text to chinese text? I have read the tutorial but have problems getting chinese characters to be displayed. I am using JCreator so must i install some language pack for JCreator or something? When i run the program i get gibberish output .

    Two general suggestions:
    1. Use a font that can render the Chinese characters. If you don't, you will see boxes instead of what you want to see. And don't waste your time trying to write them to the console (System.out and so on).
    2. When reading them from an external source (file, database, and so on), make sure you are using the correct encoding to convert bytes to chars, the one that was used to create the data. If you don't, you will see ??? instead of what you want to see.

  • I have a video in .avi format, what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

I have a video in .avi format, but what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

tylerfrombalantine's post had zero grammar in it, so it's not clear what he's saying. I bought a DVD recorder and the instruction manual lists all the disc formats it can play. Check your DVD recorder manual to see what works with it, then burn a DVD that matches. It should be fine to burn just a standard DVD, since of course any DVD player can play that.
Depending on the program you use, you may not have to convert anything manually. The program might convert your current video format to DVD on fly as it burns the disc.

to play movies in .avi format.
have connected an external memory and all the entertainment
    files are in .avi format.
Ansver i get : does not support

VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

  • Expert coaster maker needs help!  AVI plays - DVD issues??

The problem is that there seems to be a piece of footage that doesn't want to play right on the TV/DVD. It plays perfect in AVI format and through Encore preview (also Premiere).
Not all the video/audio is bad and stuttering - just a few parts. But, these parts pause/stop/start the playback.
    History of the footage:
Four DV tapes imported Used Premiere (all products latest CS3 with latest updates) to edit video (multiple camera angles, etc)
Exported attempts: Microsoft DV AVI, Uncompressed Microsoft AVI and direct to Encore
I've even just worked with the problem section with same results.
Note: all footage plays perfectly within Premiere, Encore and Windows media player.
There is nothing different about this piece of footage - in fact it's within a large clip that plays right up to the problem.
    Any ideas?
If there is other information I can offer please tell me what it is.
Thanks upfront for all the ideas and help!!
    Kevin

Try using RW - no coasters.
Is it the exact same section of footage that causes problems every time? Or are there minor variations?
    Try different hardware/software DVD players.
    Try different blank media.
Try burning at a slower speed.
Try building a disc image, then burning that through another program like
    ImgBurn

  • Need help with .avi files

Hi everyone. I just got an iMac for Christmas. I've been a PC user all my life, so I'm new to some of this stuff. My question is about .avi movie clips.
I have a Casio Exilim digital camera. As soon as I set up my iMac I uploaded all data from my digital camera. I have several short movie clips in iPhoto. I can hear the audio, but I don't see video. How can I watch the videos on my new computer and use iMovie.
Thanks in advance for your help!

AVI is a container type, a container can contain any number of audio and video compression types, some of which may be editable and some not, some of which may be compatible with imovie and some not.
QT Pro (and a number of other 3rd party applications) may help you convert these files to an appropriate format. It would help if we knew what compression types are used, you can determine this by opening the movie in QT and choosing inspector from the window menu.
AVI is a very old MS proprietary format, it was even abandoned by MS over 10 years ago, unfortunately there is a small possibility AVI files can contain long forgotten compression types which there are no converters for, although since your files are from a modern camera this is quite unlikely.
Report back with the compression types and someone will help further.
