Help needed freeing up storage after iPhoto transfer

Hello All,
I've been trying to research this, but am not having much luck.  Obviously I'm on a Macbook Air, I had about 22GBs of photos in my iPhoto library.  I moved the library to a harddrive to help free up memory, which was fine.  I deleted the old file on the machine, but when I go to "About this mac" to check and see the reduction marked "photos" on the bar graph, it still reads the same size library.  I have emptied the trash and have also restarted.  I know I pulled the iphoto library from the correct place, I just don't know why the storage still reads the 22GB usage.  Any suggestions?

The "storage" tab found in About This Mac does not provide an accurate status for how much space you have available. I have never been able to understand the time lags between its being updated and then there are those mysterious Time Machine "backup" snapshots which must serve some useful purpose but they make the "storage" tab not very useful when you have a SSD and want to know exactly what space is left.
The only way to see exactly what space you are using and have left is to select your Macintosh HD and do Get Info. That tells you what you have, and any time lag there can be resolved by logging out and back in.  If you deleted 22 GB of files, you should see 22 GB more in space available when doing Get Info, assuming that you emptied the Trash.
I sugest you also download OmniDiskSweeper (free) or WhatSize (small fee) to find out where your space is being used.

  • "Aperture Library Needs to be Upgraded" after iPhoto 9.3 upgrade

This issue began when iPhoto crashed during a low battery scenario while using latest version of iPhoto before 9.3 upgrade. I could not open iPhoto unless I bought and installed Aperture. I have never owned or installed Aperture.
    I am running lion OS
iPhoto became corrupted when battery on mac book pro was nearing 20%
in the middle of the corruption problem, I upgraded to iPhoto 9.3 using Software Update on 6/18/2012 (hoping it would reinstall the needed files)
then iPhoto library wouldn't open because it was expecting . (probably because aperture and iPhoto can now view each others' libraries).
For a while after the initial crash, starting iPhoto would crash entire machine
    I reset permissions
ran a tool called Yasu clears a bunch of cashes
    started in *safe mode*
tried to rebuild iPhoto library with option/command keys - it never allowed that step
spoke to Tier 2 Apple application support on the phone
he helped me create a new iPhoto library by opening iPhoto using *option* key
imported all 20k photos but lost all albums and descriptions because the mappings to the original files are stored in a single file that does not get updated when you re-import photos. hence, there was no way to update the new album locations
he also told me I could not use my Time Machine backup because that iPhoto library was a different version than current, 9.3 iPhoto library (thankfully, he was guessing wrong)
he warned that even if I installed Aperture it might not solve my problem
visited Genius Bar at Fashion Valley storehe told me there was starting to be some chatter on the discussion boards about similar problems but I should probably wait for an apple update to the problem that must surely be coming soon
    The Fix:
I restored iPhoto from last good time machine iPhoto backup
It was dated: sunday June 10, 2012
    The Good:
Many photos and folders in iPhoto restored!
    Many iPhoto albums recovered!
    except...
    The Bad:
Time Machine only restored from last *full* time machine backup
*full* those are backups that occur in time machine when the iPhoto app is *closed*
restored items only include items before February 2012 when presumably iPhoto was closed during the backup
imported photos and albums look good, except the last import was 2/2012

    UPDATE
i restored a later version of my iphoto (6/18) that included ALL of my photos. that backup was manually made using time machine - AFTER the problems began, so i knew it was risky. however, i wanted to use it because it contained ALL of my photos and albums.
    this did not work well.
all of the photo *events* imported (with some small problems).
    NONE of *albums* imported.
the thumbnails were all grayed out or black.
i was able to access the "photo library first aid" screen by holding down *option/command* keys to start the first aid process. before i restored from time machine, i was not able to get my corrupt library to get to this step, so this was a pretty big success.
using the available options brought back the thumbnails, but not albums.
using the last ditch "rebuild database" option began to update facebook albums that i had posted using iphoto!
    what a pain and embarassment.
i went back to the 6/10 TM backup
this was because one of the upsides to this whole ordeal was that all of my photos were intact in Finder. some photos before 6/10 were in Finder but not in iphoto and none after 6/10 were displaying in iphoto, but i had a base to work with.
the folders in finder resided in the iphoto library area and in the iphoto file structure (Masters/Year/Month/Day/Event).
after the initial restore a few days ago, i used iphoto's "import" feature to pull in those photos and it placed them into an event folder for the DAY i imported them... not picking up the day they were originally taken or where they resided in the iphoto file structure (i was bummed).
after restoring the 6/10 backup, the state was as it was in my initial post.
i used "Repair Database" (again holding down *option/command*) from the Photo Library First Aid screen and iphoto pulled in all the photos - by their correct date - from the file structure in finder. i was able to restore all of the photos and all the albums related to those photos!
    woo hoo!
i had to also use the "Repair Thumbnails" to get the thumbnails from those recently imported photos to appear corrrectly in iphoto (small price to pay).
there may be some albums missing, but this is far and away better than what was originally restored.
my next step is to restore photos from TM that were created "after" 6/10. they reside in the file structure and my guess is that i will be able to "repair database" to get them added to iphoto.

  • Help needed about Nearline storage in BW 3.5.

    Hi Guys,
Can you please provide me with some documents for implementing Nearline storage scenarios in BW 3.5.
    Thanks,
    Punkuj...

    Hi Punkuj,
We use Nearline storage to store the data that is never been user or used very rarely. For example we have data for year 1960 in the data targets and now it is 2007.So mostly the management never uses this data or they uses them very rearly. So when we retrive the data from the data targets the DB unnecessarly reads the data every time when a report is generated on those targets. So to avoid this performance issue we store that kind of data in a seperate disk and we access that data using a multi provider when we need that in Report. This data is also known as Dormat data.
    Hope this will help you.
    Thanks and Regards

I wrote the following section of an Excel 2010 macro to open a selected pdf file with Adobe Reader, then copy all text to the clipboard & then return to Excel to paste &

Is there any difference between the preferences for RX and RXI. Please go to "edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Security(Enhanced)" and uncheck "Enable protected mode at startup".

    Any body has any ideas?

    Hello Bidwan,
I think it is an issue with company address. Just check if  company addresses are existing the source client ?After client copy company addreses of target client will only exist in source client. Then if you do impot of the transport containing USR* tables it will try to assign old company addresses to the users but probably they are not exisitng in target client any more.
If this is the case then you need to create those company addresses again using SUCOMP and then once again import the transport for user master.

  • HT4859 Help needed for max storage in iCloud

I am reaching the max storage in iCloud. If I change my backup settings for apps to "off," does that affect the apps automatically updating between devices?  Will it only affect the data being shared &amp; not the actual app?  For example, I'm assuming that the info entered into the some of my apps will not back up in iCloud but this won't affect ueof the appson both my iPhone &amp; iPad.  Any clarification on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Look at the apps you are backing up and sharing via iCloud...Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photo-stream material does not count against your storage allocation so leaving those on is fine.  The apps that store documents and data are the ones you need to look at and see how much material is being stored in iCloud and do you really need that material stored there.  Turn off any that you do not actually need to store in iCloud.

  • Help needed... Trying to transfer music from ipod to new laptop

I have a 5th generation 30GB ipod with 14GB of music on and I want to transfer the tracks to my new PC rather than having to copy all the CDs to it. I have tried connecting it through itunes and although it show under my devices and I can play the tracks through itunes it won't let me move or copy the tracks to my libary. I have checked the preference and they seem to be all ok.. I am running itunes 7 on the laptop and the ipod software is all up to date. Please can someone help me

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

Please help needed os x lion I wish to transfer photos from the iPhoto library to a album or folder then delete them from the Library but when I do this it also deletes them from the album ? how do I do this please.

Albums are not places to store photos, they're more like "labels" you can apply to photos to better organize them. A single image file can be in multiple albums... they are not copies, it's simply been labelled as being in all those albums. So what you're trying to do doesn't make sense, because it's based on incorrect assumptions.
The iPhoto library will always show all photos that you have added to iPhoto.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • IPhoto in MacBook Pro 2013 only shows "place holders," but no photos, after data transfer from Macbook Air 32011

I am trying to transfer data from my MacBook Air 2011 to a "new" MacBook Pro 2013.  Both are running Yosemite 10.10.2.  Since Migration Assistant WOULD NOT WORK (the MacBook Air couldn't "see" the MacBook Pro), using my WiFi network, I transferred the necessary data to a 500GB drive and THEN to the MacBook Pro.  However, two programs didn't transfer well - or at all!  iTunes only transferred the Music (Media?) files, but not iTunes U, Podcasts, Audiobooks, etc.  I have had to  drill down into the storage files, retrieve the non-transferred files and add them, one by one - a most laborious task.  But, this is nothing compared to the problem with iPhoto (9.6), which shows only 6 events and 4 Faces transferred, with the rest only place holders (black boxes and grey dotted squares) in all the folders in my iPhoto.
I "Showed Package Contents," and found the missing files - of which there are many! - and started adding them, again, one by one.
Can anyone tell me what happened to my iPhoto (Yosemite 10.10.2)?  It's fine on my MacBook Air, but simply WON'T TRANSFER to my MacBook Pro?
PLEASE - someone tell me how to CORRECTLY transfer my iPhoto files and/or HOW TO MAKE THE MACBOOK AIR "SEE" THE MACBOOK PRO in Migration Assistant?

    Hello Mary,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with moving your data over to your new Mac. There are a few alternatives that you can do to migrate that data if you are not seeing it in Migration Assistant. The first is make a Time Machine back up to that 500 Gb external hard drive and then use that in Migration Assistant to copy the entire data over. If you do that you will want to remove any data that you have on your MacBook Pro after the transfer completes as it will create another user with the data from the MacBook Air. Another option is to use a Thunderbolt Cable that you can purchase online if you want and use the option from another disk to copy that over. Take a look at the articles below for more details.

  • After iPhoto quit unexpectedly, the last 5 months of photos disappeared from my library. Please help!

After iPhoto quit unexpectedly, the last 5 months of photos disappeared from my library. Please help! I can't find them anywhere.

    You're using iPhoto 6?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto Library in Finder changed after iPhoto 6.0.6 update - HELP!!!

I recently installed iLife 06 on my Powerbook and soon afterwards got a message that my iPhoto would be updated. Not having any problems in the past with software updates, I clicked the 'ok' button. Then when I went into Finder, I found that the whole organisation of my photos in the iPhoto Library had changed from being sorted by year, month and day, to year and roll. I HATE this and cannot find any photos or films the way I used to find them. Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way? Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about??? I would be so grateful if someone could help! Thanks in advance, a very frustrated Mac lover!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way?
I think they changed the entire database engine with iPhoto6 to take account of ever growing libraries.
But NO there is NO way to revert to the older way, nor is there any need to.
To find pics - and this was also the way in earlier versions - you never need to look in the iPhoto Library Folder. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about???
iPhoto - as it has always done - keeps your Original file, untouched, a Modified version (if you've edited it) and a thumbnail. This has been the way since iPhoto 1.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
IF you do your work in the iPhoto Window - as is intended with the app - then you'll have no problems whatever.
    Regards
