Help needed - half successful move of iTunes to external drive

I have just purchased a WD external drive and have attempted to move the contents of iTunes (but not the programme) to it from my Mac's hard drive. It seems that podcasts etc have been moved, but not the music files (they all appear in iTunes, but with ! in front of some of them and when you select a track to play you get an error message that says the track can't be found.
How can I resolve this?

What format is the extrenal drive? How are you moving the iPhoto library?
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Need to put Itunes on External Drive - HELP PLEASE

My computer is full of stuff and my ITunes is overwhelming it. I would like to move everything to my external drive and just leave it there. Has anyone done this successfully. Do I have to burn everything I own out of fear of maybe losing it? Any suggestions would be great. I'm not the most computer saavy person...

i too did not want all my music on my internal drive and have successfully moved everything to an external... now i don't know about moving teh actual itunes program but you can move teh folder your itunes takes music from to an external... just go into your setting and change the libraries to that of teh external drive... then just copy everything from your main itunes folder to your new one.... you will also have to get rid of your old playlists because it will not be able to find any of your songs because you moved them.... you can also just relocate all teh files manually but that would take forever... if you don't have complicated playlists then this is a good option in my opinion...

That is the only logical conclusion. There is an easy solution. On the Mac app store download a free app called smartconverter. It is free. You just drag and drop file into app and it will convert to any file u want. I hope that foxes your issue

I just moved my itunes off my macbook pro because it was taking up too much space and put it on an external hard drive. i have a second external hard drive that i use for time machine. when i update time machine next will my itunes files be removed from the backup since they are no longer on my internal hard drive (what time machine backs up?) basically, i want to make sure i have a second copy of my itunes besides the one on my first external hard drive and i was wondering if time machine will still have all of that data (on the second external hard drive).

Check to see whether or not it's excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
Items deleted from the hard drive won't be deleted from the backup until the backup location runs out of space.

Need to move pictures to an external drive.

can anyone advise me on setting a partion to an extrnal drive? I want to move pictures permantly to external drive so i can make room on my macbook. When I export pictures from iphoto (4,000 pictures), the folder on the extrnal drive has 798 mb. What's up? What am I doing wrong?

I am confused by your post. Have you already done this and want to know why the folder is 798 mb, or are you asking for advice on how to partition the drive so you can move the pics? If you plan to partition you must do it before you move the Library.

Running my .mp4 Movie files from an External Drive

I have quite a few familiy movies etc that I've put together using FCP and I've sent these to itunes as .mp4 files which I then playon our TV through the apple TV module.
However I'd really like to be able to store these home movies on an external drive to save my HD space and also keep them safe.
Is it possible to trasfer all of these .mp4 files in my itunes movies folder onto an external drive and run them from there on my apple TV?

No, Michael Allbritton's (MA) method just copies the files you have selected to consolidate to the location you have temporarily designated in preferences. MA didn't mean "library" as being the library file (library.itl) but the "collection". Your files would still all be managed from the same iTunes library file on your internal drive but the movie files you selected to consolidate would now be referenced to their new location on the external drive.
Note the difference between these two methods:

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Moving your movies will only apply to your current collection. If you add movies in the future you will need to make sure they are on the external drive, then hold down the option key while dragging the file to iTunes to tell iTunes to not copy it to your internal drive (which has been re-set as the location for your media folder after the move directions).

Imovie 10: how to move the (movie) library to an external drive

Hi all,
using imovie '11 it wasn't any problem to move the (movie) library to an external drive following these instrcutions: <http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2289?viewlocale=en_US>. After updating to mavericks and imovie 10 I can't find the hard drive icon to pull down the drive list any more.
Maybe I missed something very obvious but would be very happy for any suggestion.

Your events and projects now reside in an file or files with extension .imovielibrary. You can create a new library wherever you want from within iMovie and drag and drop events into it from an exisitng library. If you want to move the complete library, select the library then go File - Consolidate Project Media. This ensures the library is self-contained and doesn't have any links to external media which could break when it is moved. You can then move the library to the external HD using the Finder. When you restart iMovie you will have to select File - Open Library - Other and navigate to its new location.

How do you take your existing iTunes Library and move it to an External Drive?

I'm at my capacity of Storage Space on my iMac w/ the majority of memory being used via iTunes. Is there a way to move my existing Library to my external Hard Drive and still look/run the same as if on my computer? How can new loaded music/movies/etc. be loaded to that same library on the external drive? Trying to make an old MacBook with current iTunes a server for Apple TV. Have burned DVDs to external drive and have added my music to drive. iTunes made a library on the external drive. When I open iTunes to choose a library, I can either get all of the movies or get all of the music, but I cannot choose something that is both. I have even dragged the movies into the same file as the music, hopping that would help, but alas, I can still just have one or the other.

How do I get iTunes to store my Movies/tv on an External Drive?

Well, my Laptop's running out of space & I thought it best if I began shifting my movies & tv over to my external drive (seeing as they're bigger files than music & podcasts).
I've read elsewhere that it is possible, however they were only instructions for Macs.
So, is there any specific things I should do?
I's thinking perhaps move the movies & tv over to the hard drive, & in the itunes folders of my laptop have shortcuts to their locations on the hard drive.
That's just a novice's idea so I wouldn't know if that'd work.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Select your external drive and "Get Info" from the Finder menu.
A window appears and at the bottom is how you can unlock and set the permissions to you and apply to enclosed items.
Make sure to do this only to a external non-bootable (no OS X installed) file type drive.
You also may be interested in Decloner, it takes some time but finds all the real duplicates, not only just in name or thumbnail appearance which can decieve you and you wind up deleting the original by accident.

Need to transfer from iPod to iTunes after storing iTunes on external drive

Hello,
Question: How do I safely transfer the library from the iPod tp iTunes?
Background: I tried to move my iTunes to a LaCie external hard drive and now my music library is not showing up on iTunes. The complete music library is on my iPod and I would like to know how to copy it back to iTunes.
Currently when I attach the iPod to the computer it gives me an error message that the iPod is connected to a different library.
Some more details:
- When I opened iTunes again after attempting to transfer it to the external hard drive there was a brief set up and then the purchased songs were transfered and those songs are the only ones showing up now on the computer's iTunes.
- I did change the settings under preferences to move iTunes to the D drive (the external hard drive).
- I also tried consolidating the library. It only showed the purchased songs.
How do I safely transfer the library from the iPod tp iTunes?
