Help needed in Cisco Wireless Nework
Hi, I really needs some help here. My work place has recently implemented wireless network with Cisco Aironet NIC, Cisco Aironet Access Point and Cisco Access Control Server. We use handheld PC to connect wirelessly to the network and access files as well as web base application.
The problem that we are facing is the connection to the network, it takes approxmately 2 mins. This timing really piss my users of due the nature of their work.
The connection is as follows :
Users turn on the handheld PC and enter the Windows Logon Module, after entering the logon name and password for LEAP authetication, it takes up to 2 mins to connect to network and access the Microsoft Terminal Server where application resides.
We have encryption key set between the handheld PC and Access point. The connection between the Access Point and Access Control Server is using Radius protocol. After which Access Control Server will LEAP autheticate the logon and password then connect to the network.
Should I turn off the LEAP authetication, I am able to access the intranet within 5 secs, but no access to network resources.
Are there anyone with similar experience? Where can I configure in order to shorten the timing?
Thanks

Help needed by installing wireless to an Tecra 8000
I have just bought the wife an old tecra 8000 laptop and would like to run wifi on it, I bought a d-link router and a d-link usb adapter but it said I needed a hi-speed usb, and it wouldn,t pick up the router, would a pcmia card work better, also can anybody suggest a modem/router and card that works on it,any help is much appreciated....
Hi
The Tecra 8000 supports only the USB 1.1 standard.
The high speed USB ports are 2.0
Many USB devices are designed only for the USB 2.0 and I assume your USB WLan adapter supports also only the 2.0 standard.
The PCMCIA should work better. There is no standard limitation like on the USB ports. -
Help needed to setup wireless printing
I have less than a month's experience of using a Mac but am really enjoying my purchase so far.
The one issue that I have not been able to solve is printing.
I have a HP Photosmart P1000 which I can successfully print to via USB but I have had no success when trying wirelessly using a Belkin Wireless Print Server (model F1UP0001). My PC was easy to setup using Belkin's setup disk but they omitted to add Macs to their list of operating systems!!
I've tried following instructions given in a post on here but it didn't work
Could anyone please offer any suggestions to find a fix?
Thank you.
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)The driver provided by HP doesn't work for network printing, because it bypasses the CUPS system. The only comm protocol you get is what was written into the driver - USB. Install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript driver set from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
Second issue - the windows setup software enters the server queue name during setup, but we don't have that software on OS X. You need to find the queue name in the print server docs, then enter it next to IP address in OS X Printer Setup. Common queue names are L1, lp, lpt1, etc.
Wait - just remembered I downloaded that manual for someone elses's question. The queue name is lp1 (el-p-one). So in Printer Setup select IP printer > LPD, and enter IP address and that queue name.
Good luck. -
Airpot express help needed to enable wireless printing.
Hello and thanks to everyone who post on this fourm, I have read and learned alot over the past year. When I bought my Macbook last December It cam with an airport express router. At that time I has a mediocre isp and we were not able to trouble shoot the airport express so I gave up on trying to get it to work. Recently I got DSL and I am using my same linksys. I tried to hook up my airport ex tonight and again just screwed my entire internet up. I really think I will just continue to use my linksys for the net, but is there a way to run my printer downstairs through my airpot express but not use it for the web. Dont get me wrong Im sure they are good but I have spent between 10 to 15 hours reading and trying only to keep going back to linksys.
Thanks so much for all the helpThe driver provided by HP doesn't work for network printing, because it bypasses the CUPS system. The only comm protocol you get is what was written into the driver - USB. Install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript driver set from:

Can I buy an Airport Express plug-in wifi signal booster to connect to a Cisco wireless router, or do I have to buy an Airport Extreme base station to make the Airport Express plug-in work?
You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.
Configure the Extreme or Express that is connected to the Cisco router to "create a wireless network".
Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly. -

Need Help on Cisco Wireless Solution!
Hello Netpros!
I have some issues that probably most of wireless implementers faced after implementing a wireless solution. This is an actual feedback from the customer and These issues can be broken down to the following:
1. The wireless Network is slow! (wireless performance)
The customer has Airtight in placed and airtight reports that users are mostly connected to the wireless network on 2 mbps speed. Users also says that their network experience using wireless are slow compared to wired network.
My question is what reports or guides that cisco wireless cotroller system or WLC can shows that proves the network is working as it is intended. Any guides on how to improve the user experience? Any guide from Cisco IT?
During these slowness, what reports from WCS or WLC that can best shows the problems and helps us implementers to mitigate the problem?
2. Baseline Wireless Performance.
When asked about a baseline performance of wireless network, what reports from the WCS or WLC that can show this and what is the acceptable or baseline values?
3. Is there a general guideline on how to use WCS or WLC reporting tools to troubleshoot a wireless performance issue? What reports to see? and how to translate that to say to the customer that the wireless network is under performing?
The main reasons i am asking these questions is because i cannot find any useful documents in cisco that guides the wireless implementers on how to use the reports generated by WCS or WLC when it concerns the performance of the wireless.
Most of the reports WCS generate that relates to the performance normally rounds up the AP performance, channel, noise, but how to translate that to user concerns is another matter.
Perhaps these issues are partly due to user expectations or maybe the wireless setup need to be tweaked or even might requires a spectrum analyzer to pinpoint interferences.
In either cases, I hope netpros can help direct me to good documentation albeit from cisco or other sources that can best outline wireless performance reporting using cisco wcs and wlc.
Background information:
The wireless network setup has one WCS, one location appliance, 4 WLCs and around 150 to 200 APs, most running Local and some running HREAP. Most of the issues concerns the local type APs.
Thanking all in advance!
maldinYup,
thats what we told the customer and even showed them the wlc/wcs reports.
Unfortunately, these customers are lacking in wireless knowledge and they want a streamlined, documented steps to generate the reports and also to help them understand in laymen terms.
At the moment we are formulating a holistic approach to the customer to get them understand wireless first, get them to have a policy and enforce and then drill down to management, reporting and troubleshooting.
The thing is, the wireless is always working fine, but sometimes so it happens some bigshots unable to connect to the wireless network in meeting rooms or somewhere and the become jumpy and pointing fingers.
So the IT manager wants to reduces the finger pointing by having the WLC/WCS to produce reports to them. -
Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller ?
Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller , for Rogue detection
Hi Joao,
The WCS is used in conjuntion with the WLC (Wireless Lan Controller) for Rogue Detection. It is not a must for this function but more of an add-on :)
The Cisco WCS is an optional network component that works in conjunction with Cisco Aironet Lightweight Access Points, Cisco wireless LAN controllers and the Cisco Wireless Location Appliance.
From this doc;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/index.html
Overview of WCS
The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) is a Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution management tool that adds to the capabilities of the web user interface and command line interface (CLI), moving from individual controllers to a network of controllers. WCS includes the same configuration, performance monitoring, security, fault management, and accounting options used at the controller level and adds a graphical view of multiple controllers and managed access points.
WCS runs on Windows 2003 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4.0 and AS 4.0 servers. On both Windows and Linux, WCS can run as a normal application or as a service, which runs continuously and resumes running after a reboot.
The WCS user interface enables operators to control all permitted Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution configuration, monitoring, and control functions through Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. Operator permissions are defined by the administrator using the WCS user interface Administration menu, which enables the administrator to manage user accounts and schedule periodic maintenance tasks.
WCS simplifies controller configuration and monitoring while reducing data entry errors with the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Controller autodiscovery algorithm. WCS uses the industry-standard SNMP protocol to communicate with the controllers.

What do i NEED to go Wireless? PLEASE HELP
I have a Powerbook Titanium Ethernet 15" with 550/512/60. I am connected to the internet via a Cable Modem from Adelphia.
I am clueless.
So could someone please give me a list of what i need so i can move my powerbook around the house and not be hooked up to the cable modem.
thanks, GordonDear Gordon,
A few points.
Please don't for 1 minute think I'm trying to be in any way churlish but this query might have got a quicker response in the Titanium PB forum. I only say that because it took me about 20 mins to find the answer I'm about to give and much longer to type as I'm not familiar with the nuances of your hardware
Having said that, I'm more than happy to try to assist a fellow thespian.
To get wireless you need;
a) Some means for your PB to send/receive wireless signals.
Originally, this would have been an 802.11b (11Mbps)Airport card installed in your machine. This would give you a slow but adequate connection by todays standards. The current main standard is 54g (54Mbps Megabits per second). It is not cost effective, nor a good idea to get an original card. It will be slow and expensive.
So - You need a compatible card. Apparently, Apple uses or used to use the broadcom chipset to make Airport cards. Consequently a good 54g card based on the broadcom chipset should be plug and play in your card slot and behave just like a native Airport Extreme card (54g), especially if your OSX is up to date.
This card is the one I think you need therefore is the Sonnet 54 card.OtherWorldComputing has it for $70, but I rcommend shopping around - it doesn't work better if you pay more for it.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/G54CB/
$55 here
http://www.provantage.com/sonnet-g54-cb~7SONT038.htm
b) You need something for the Airport extreme card to talk to - this is a wireless router - again 54g.
This bit is easy - if you have a cable modem, it will have an ethernet connection, so all you need is the router.
There are many options, but you can get them reasonably cheaply - I picked mine up for $70 with $60 in rebates from circuit city. - This netgear one is on sale at $59 with $30 of rebates and you can probably pick it up from the store;
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Netgear-Wireless-Router-WGR614-/sem/rpsm/oid/7288 8/catOid/-12980/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
(If the link doesn't work - go to circuit city and type 54g in the search box)
An alternative is a Belkin f5d72304
There are many alternatives, so if you can find a good price on a 54g router (with at least 4 ports) take it up.
Once you get the router - take a look at the instructions, but essentially what you will do is plug the internet to the router and then configure it to do2 things
a) Connect itself to the internet through the cable modem.
b) Allow the Powerbook to connect to it wirelessly (and route Powerbook traffic to/from the internet). So the router sits as if at the junction of 2 circles the powerbook and the internet, each of which only touches the router, not the other circle.
You will configure the router by connecting the router with a cable to the PowerBook and connecting to it from your web browser. Once you type in the address of the router you will get the config page where you can change settings.
You will need to enter the username and password for the WAN(Internet Cable Account).
You will also need to enable wireless networking, create a name for your network and then enable wireless security so that any Tom Dick or Harriet can't just come and get onto your network.I would recommend WPA Personal. You will need a password or phrase - I would recommend a mix of letters and numbers that are not immediately obvious - e.g HenryIrving
1838 or some such. Also disable ssid (this disables the broadcasting of the network name - to connect you type in the name of the network and the password instead of having the name presented to you). These are basic and essential security precautions.
Lastly you will then connect your Sonnett card - it should be recognised immediately as an airport card - you will get the "fan" icon on the top of the toolbar. Click that and select "other" for network - type in the network name, type of security (WPA Personal) and the password and you should get a connection. You can make this the default network from the system preferences.
That's all. Phew! If you do all that and eat your greens I'll tell you more about security. Spelling mistakes are gratis.
Best of luck.
PS - Whilst you can use almost any 54g router, do not be tempted by a cheaper card for the PowerBook - they may not work properly. -

Showing Full AP name in cisco Wireless phone 7921-site survey
Hi,
I am working on a project where cisco wireless phone 7921 is utilized. We use phones sitesurvey tool for coverage tests. Our AP names are 18 characters in length and are not dispayed in full in site survey screen. Please suggest on a way to increase the display character count in the site survey or to make it a running text. Thank you.
Regards,
Madhan kumar GHi Leo,
Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the Fluke OptiView XG Network Analysis Tablet. Looks very interesting, but looking at the cost of the Tablet, I am pretty sure that my Employer will say NO.
Anyways, Can you recommend some vendor options (It will be really helpful, if you can share the Model information as well) for the list highlighted below.
1. AP Tripod (Reaches 3 meters max) - Need recommendation on AP Telescopic Tripod which should be portable to carry in the Peli Case.
2. Distance measuring tool - Need recommendation on this.
3. Laptop harness - I did some research and found Connect-A-Desk Laptop Harness, which I am planning to purchase
Also, I need your inputs in choosing Antennas for Site-Survey Kit (I am looking at must to have options for the Kit).
Thanks,

Hi,
We are in process of deploying cisco wireless infrastucture using WLC 5508 and AP1252. However, just curious to know what are Cisco best practices regarding VLAN design for these components. Can they belong to same VLAN or we need to provision separate VLANS for WLC and APs.
Appreciate your early response.
-> Ripu500 APs will be fine. The number of clients isn't an issue here, it becomes more of an issue depending on the setup of your wireless infrastructure, you probably wouldn't want 1000s of users on one big flat network.
Hope this helps,
Thanks
Chris
