Help Needed - Mac Pro tells me to restart during start up
A couple of weeks ago my pc froze and the screen went fuzzy with green and blue, so I held the power button down. Upon restart, I was told I needed to restart my pc again, and from there it started up fine and I had been using it up until now.
This time I can't get past the initial loading page with the Apple logo and grey screen, and the green / blue glitchyness has reappeared. I m still prompted to restart my pc, but so far, after several attempts, none have worked.
Any ideas? For the record, I don't know a whole lot about the technical side of my Mac.

It would help us to know which MBP "model" you have, which OS you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by going to 'preferences' which is located in the column on the right under your name, click on "My Settings" and filling in the information asked for.
This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct troubleshooting solutions.

Need help with Mac Pro purchasing decision
I've read preliminary reviews on the new Mac Pro, and I'm ready to upgrade my current Mac Pro (which is Dual 2.4 Ghz Quad-core with 32 GB RAM). But I'm going through some major turmoil in the decision. My current Mac Pro, aged as it may be, has been good to me, and when it needed upgrading, it was so easy to do. I installed an additional two internal hard disks, giving the Mac Pro 3 TBs of internal storage. RAM upgrade was a breeze, and when the graphics card went out, I was able to buy and install a replacement without a hiccup.
I love the low profile of the new Mac Pro, albeit I'll still be putting it on the floor - I don't like having my desktop computer in my desk work area. And it looks like upgrading the RAM in the new Mac Pro is pretty simple (although horribly expensive). I would require a CD/DVD drive, so that becomes a piece of "stuff" I have to clutter my work are with. However, most importantly, the internal storage issue, FOR ME, is huge. Without the ability to add internal drives, getting the 1TB flash storage is a must, but sooooooo expensive. AND.. I still need additional storage (more than half of my current 3 TBs is in use).
Moreover, the whole lack of upgradability has me concerned that the new Mac Pro may disappear like the G4 Cube. I haven't seen any rave reviews of the new Mac Pro overall.
But I need to upgrade.
I have configured a new Mac Pro on the Apple Store about 100 times now, but never making the purchase for all of the above reasons, as well as the $5K price tag that it keeps ending up at. I even started looking at refurbished Mac Pros (newer than mine, but the same old huge silver case). The advantage is that it's upgradeable, and I won't end up with an optical drive or external hard drives cluttering my desk space.
The truth is, every time I go to buy, either a new Mac Pro, or a refurbished one, I hit a wall. I'm walking the fence, wondering if I should walk it until a newer Mac Pro shows up with more expandability options (although it seems unlikely since Apple's direction seems to be form over function).
The new Mac Pro has been out for awhile, so I am looking for feedback from people who are kind of in my shoes, but already bit the bullet. I don't want to encourage replies of regret, but I also would prefer the truth over grandiose reviews simply to justify making the leap (and dropping some huge bills). It happens... "I just spent 5 grande, I better **** well love it, and I'll make sure everyone else thinks I do!" ;-)
Please share your experiences. How have you gotten around the lack of upgradeability on the internal storage? I have had bad experiences with external drives in the past. Firewire drives were fast and furious, but the were not as reliable as internal drives. USB drives lag, and that dreaded spin up time every time the Mac OS does something that wakes up all the drives, even if the external drives weren't actually being accessed (never had that problem with Firewire drives, maybe because they were always spun up?).
Anyway, I don't want my buyer's pain to turn into buyer's remorse, so I appreciate all the wisdom any of you would be willing to share.

BillI'll offer my comments although there are others much better qualified to answer than I am.
First, the reason I bought the machine that I got was that I found an "open box" deal at a local retailer and got a substantial discount from the normal list price. Otherwise, I might not have gone to the nMP quite as quickly as I did. Regarding ram and the ssd drive, both of these can be upgraded at some later date if I find that is needed. The ram I will probably bump asap, filling the one empty slot with likely an 8gb OWC module.
To run your VGA monitors, you will need 2 passive mini-display port to VGA adapters. You can buy these pretty much anywhere, the Apple ones are superb quality at a price but other options are out there. These will plug into 2 of the Thunderbolt ports on the nMP.
Regarding cpu's and gpu's it gets a bit confusing. Basically right now it depends on the software that you are going to run. It is not likely coincidence that FCPX 10.1 came out basically at the same time as the nMP, as it really highlights full use of the multicore cpu's plus the dual fast gpu's. FCPX really screams on the nMP.
Right now, it seems more video software is making optimum use of both the multicore cpu's and dual gpu's in the nMP. Other software, most notably photo software that should also benefit, is lagging behind. For instance (going only from memory) Adobe software is not very good at using multi-core cpu's nor does it use multiple gpu's either. You can find comparisons of running Photoshop filters on a 3.7ghz 4-core vs the (slower clock speed) 6 or 8 cores and the 4-core comes out close or even faster in some tests because Photoshop uses only a single core, which on the 4-core machine is faster.
However, this is a pretty specific instance and generally buying the fastest cpu and gpu that you can afford is a good plan. Especially so for the gpu's as right now, the video may end up being the only component that does not end up with some sort of upgrade option in the foreseeable future.
If I was going to order a system under the circumstances you have stated, the 6-core with the D500 gpu's sure looks like the sweet spot in the lineup, and probably money well spent. After I would probably upgrade the ssd next, since in order to upgrade it later you have to remove a perfectly good ssd since there is only one slot. Personally I am ok with the 256gb as my boot and system drive, since with Thunderbolt you have basically PCIe access to an external box that can have either Sata or PCIe expansion for whatever storage you can afford.
As I said earlier, right now I am going cheap and using Apples Thunderbolt to firewire cable, which is allowing me to run my existing Lacie firewire drives in a daisy chain just as I did on the old MP.
Upgrading the ram at purchase or later is your choice, there are certainly less expensive options but with only 4 slots you have to weigh the cost of discarding or trading in the original Apple ram when you decide to swap it out for bigger modules. Plus not all ram can be mixed and matched, you may have to remove all the existing ram in order to add just a single high capacity (16gb or larger) module.

Need help with Mac Pro (2008) iCloud sync problem
I am using a Mac Pro (Early 2008) with multiple drives and partitions, some of which I use for various software testing. I wanted to have access to the same data on various partitions, so I tried to use iCloud to store some Pages files. I found that in the Mountain Lion Partition that I normally use, that the document data ( Pages, Numbers, etc) would not upload to the cloud... just showed as waiting. All other iCloud Data ( Calendar, Address Book , etc) did sync fine. If I accessed iCloud using a browser or looked on iClould using the iCloud Manage function in the iCloud system preferences, I could see all the files. I then found that I did have another Mountain LIon partition in which the data syncing all worked. Other testing showed that if I did a clone of the working partition using SuperDuper, the clone worked properly, but if I did a clean install of 10.8.4, the document data did not sync.If I did a clean install and used the migration assistant to migrate from the working partition, it still did not work. I later found that if I replaced the top level Library file in a non working partition with the one from the working partition, that I could make the non working partition sync properly. I have not been able to find a subset of the folder that would make things work, but have not tried every combination. At this point my only conclusion is that there must be a bug in the 10.8.4 installer. Apple has been working on this for a few weeks, but has not found anything and cannot duplicate... but they are testing with iMacs.

My mac pro early 2009 keeps restarting with an unknown error
CPU will start up and stay in log-in mode with no issues. Once you log in the CPU will stay on for a few minutes and then restart itself for no apparent reason.
Pull the system drive. Or try command R to get into Recovery Mode (or use Option key)
Try your backup clone. If you don't add that to your to do list and for now get out your OS X Install flash drive you saved and made or your DVD if you are on Snow Leopard.
System is one thing. CPU refers only to the processor(s), not the disk drive which sounds to be corrupt, not the gpu which also could be an issue on yoru Mac Pro model (tell us - 2008 3,1 or whatever it is).
Panic or Prohibitory sign could be further hardware issue, or just need to see if it will try with no hard drive and look for "?" a system to boot from.
Reset SMC also in cases like this. -
HELP! Mac Pro Desktop... Can/Should I run with my NEC 2070NX LCD?
My main reason for considering a MAC is my photography work, my peers tell me to go this route (Mac). I currently run Adobe Photoshop CS2 on a PC and HP Laptop.
I have been considering buying an iMAC 20" OR 24".. now the MAC PRO Desktop! Still undecided! Comments & Suggestions greatly appreciated!

I am thinking if using my existing NEC LCD with the Mac Pro Desktop... Can I run with my NEC 2070NX LCD?
I bought the NEC about 2 months ago.. highly recommended for photo use due to the LCD Panel being an S-IPS type, much better than TFT as I hear!

Mac Pro Desktop (to be) Mac OS X (10.4) Current PC guy, to be first time MAC!I loathe Windows and have been a Mac user since the Apple II+ so far be it from me to discourage anyone from switching...but....Photoshop is not yet a Universal Binary which means it doesn't run natively on the Mac Intel line. If you have a good, fast windows machine now, moving to a mac will be a downgradein speed. Overall it may be a win if you are experiencing crashing, have problems with viruses or have other issues, but if you have a fast, stable PC running Photoshop that is working well for you the lesser speed of PS on a Mac is something to be aware of. Your monitor is no concern or problem. A base unit purchase, however, is. The base 1gig of ram is insufficient for all but the most casual user of a MacPro and it is wholly insufficient for a heavy Photoshop user because Photoshop needs RAM and so does Rosetta in order to run Photoshop in emulation on the Intel board. (don't bother nitpicking if emulation isn't the exact term ) Three megs of RAM is, IMHO, your base configuration, and if you want to use Aperture, the ATI card becomes part of the base configuration too. But...the MacPRo wants memory in pairs and three gigs, it turns out, handicaps the speed of the machine a bit...so while three gigs is a "base" (again...IMHO) for Photoshop, 4 gigs is my strong recommendation (which I followed personally).

Mac Pro Mid 2010 keeps restarting after installing OSX Mavericks

my Mac Pro Mid 2010 started quitting and restarting after installing the Mavericks OSX. I was thinking about wiping out the drive and reinstalling OS X Mountain Lion but thought I should see if anyone else is experiencing these issues before going that route.
It just intermittently restarts and it tries to restart multiple times before it will actually start up again. It's not issuing a crash report. It just quits out and restarts. It started doing this just at initial startup. It now will quit and restart at any given time and it will take multiple times attempting to start before it actually starts up. I've even had to shut it down because it would going through that startup sequence without starting. No perceivable pattern as to why this is occurring. No specific programs that it occurs in. The only thing I know for certain is that it started happening after installing Mavericks OSX – OSX Mountain Lion was fine. I also made sure to unistall Mountain Lion before installing Mavericks with those potential issues of trying to install one operating system over another. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I wasn't sure if you needed this posted as two separate posts or not. If this isn't correct, please let me know and I'll do again. Hopefully I didn't pull too much content for the BOOT_TIME section. I was trying to search for enough diverse content that would clearly represent what might be occurring. Mac Pro 2,1 Spontaneous Restart with No Boot - Power Supply PSU Problem?
One day I was working away on my Mac Pro 2,1 Quad Core 3.0 (2007) with 8 gb ram running Lion and it just shut itself off like someone pulled the power cord (but no one did of course). Then it attempted to restart, but wouldn't boot. Basically I haven't been able to use it since as I can't get the computer to stay on for any length of time.
I'm thinking its either the power supply or the, oh no, logic board.
Symptoms have been like this so far:
Initially I would get a chime and a boot start but then I would find the computer would shut itself off somewhere in the process and try to restart. Usually the next time I would get no chime and a horrible repeated clicking of my optical drive with a rythmic fan whirring up and down on the original ATI x1900 xt graphics card. I would have to manually power off with the power button to make it stop. Sometimes it would try to restart again anyway. The only way I could get a chime again was to unplug and wait (longer the better). But even if i got a chime and a start of a boot, invariably the computer would turn off again.
I couldn't boot from another source, I couldn't run apple hardware test, I couldn't run diagnostic,... it just wouldn't stay on to do it.
I hauled my mac pro (out of warranty) to the apple store genius bar and the problem presented itself, continuously. The gent was able to get fsck to work long enough to determine my hard drive was ok and said it was one of three things - the power supply, the graphics card, or the logic board. He said because the comp powered on and then shut off, and because there was intermittent chiming, he didn't think it was the power supply. He thought it was the graphics card and said I could leave my Mac for 10 days and they could take a looksy, or I could just install a new graphics card on my own.
I chose the latter, bought a ATI Radeon 5770 from the apple online store for $275 and installed it.
Problem persists.Exactly the same as before. Got initial chime, then next time no chime, optical drives clicking and graphics card fan whirring up and down rhythmically.
I had a touch of time to disconnect everything and I get a chime consistently now when I have my boot drive, graphics card, 4 gb ram, and monitor attached. (As well as wireless mouse, keyboard, trackpad). I even got to logon once only to have a prompt shut off and restart attempt. also I verified it was at least one optical drive clicking (when I removed them both) during these boot attempts.
The improvement in chiming seemed to be when I unseated one ram riser ( I have to with 2 x 2g ram modules each).
I also checked the diagnostic leds on the logic board and all was as it should be... says I got trickle power and rail power etc.
Is there anything else I can do to determine what's wrong? What do you guys think is wrong? Could it be bad RAM? Power Supply? Logic Board?
All your help is massively appreciated in advance!Well I ran as many tests as I could with no definitive results to the point I would have to start buying replacement parts and testing that way. I opted to take it back to the apple store and they said it's (dun dun dun dunnnnn) the logic board.

Mac Pro 3,1 Randomly restarting
Hi all,
My Mac Pro is getting a lot of kernal panic's which I assume is causing the random restarts - on boot I get "your computer restarted because of a problem'...
I'm not much of a tech person so I was hoping someone could look at the crash log and tell me what the issue is?
I've repaired Disk Permissions and all looks to be ok...

One or more of them appears to be making your Mac unstable.
You should uninstall them all, and see if the panics stop. Then reinstall only the ones you really want, one at atime. -
Keep getting this kernel panic every once in awhile its always at night when my mac pro is sleeping also it has a problem with waking on its own.. i have disconnected my externel HD thinking that may of been the problem seeing i had it connected all the time but it did not help.. anything else i have connected is a usb hub a wireless logitech mouse and a wired apple keyoard .. and a lcd and a printer... much appreciated if i can get any kind of help

HELP! Mac Pro Freezing on startup
Hi,
Upon startup, the startup noise happens, the apple logo and the spinning lines all come up, and I can hear the hard drive working away loading etc. Then, around the top quarter of the screen changes to a dark grey colour, and the hard drives go silent. It's been frozen on this screen for about half an hour!
The last thing I had done was install an update for Pro Tools LE version 7.4.2 from the Digidesign website, then I restarted the computer after install and it wont start up.
I have tried turning the computer off, both with the button and at the mains. I have also unplugged all external USB/Firewire devices, so only the keyboard and screen are plugged in, but the same freezing happens. Tried calling AppleCare but it's shut!! Can anyone help?! I managed to boot the Mac Pro in target disk mode via firewire and my MacBook. Everything on the Pro was fine until I updated Pro Tools, but now I have it running in this mode, might it be an idea to delete all associated files with the PT installation? Might this clear what I did (and whatever is causing this problem?).
I also read that disconnecting the computer for 15 seconds/pressing the SMC_RST switch might help. Tried both of these and neither solved the problem.

Last Thursday i was working all night with my 2008 Mac Pro. Early in the morning went to shut down my computer and discovered that i had a "no video signal" in my Dell monitor. Tried to solve that but i couldnt solve it. So I did a force shut down with the button
During the evening when ive returned home i tried to start up my computer but nothing happened when I press the Power button but a "click" sound.
This computer always performed really well. But right now my computer is not doing anything -no power- but that sound ive mentined.
I want to know if my computer is going to work with a new power supply or is something even worse -hope not-
Thanks a lot for all your help in advance!!I have seen these symptoms before.
It could be a component like hard disk, video card or worse, power supply.
If you are getting a "click" sound what you want to do is see if the Mac can respond to a component missing.
Like hearing a heart beat through sound. Disconnecting components is a valid troubleshooting process.
Disconnect the following until you hear a chime:
1. All peripherals including display -- USB, FireWire, etc.
2. Video Card
3. Hard disk
4. RAM
If you hear a "heartbeat" add components back until it goes zombie again. Then at least you will know which thing needs replacing.
May also try zapping PRAM at boot: CMD-OPT-P-R
One time a MacPro was catatonic.
I booted to another drive with DiskWarrior. DW brought it back to life.
