Help needed - MBP keeps restarting.

So today I turned my Macbook on and I was browsing the Internet and suddenly the screen turned grey and it began to load for a few seconds and then showed my home screen as if Id just opened my computer - all windows that I had opened a second ago were gone. Now it happened once but in the last 10 minutes its happened frequently. I have noticed whenever I click the 'documents folder' my documents appear smaller and highlighted and my mac wont let me choose them - I havent added anything new in weeks. A few seconds after I click documents it goes to the loading screen and my home screen appears as if I had just opened my macbook. Help please? The mac doesnt turn off, the screen just resets itself as if its just been turned on

This could be any number of problems but my first step would be Restarting your computer and resetting the Pram. To do this restart your machine and hold Command + Option + P + R until you hear the start up chime for a second time.
If that doesn't fix your machine then you can try an Archive and Install by using your OS install discs that came with your computer. What this does is replaces your Operating System with a clean fresh copy from the discs and then puts all of your files and user settings back in the correct place. You won't lose any of your files or applications but it is still a good idea to back them up.
If the problem still persist then it is most likely hardware related and you would need to take it to an Apple Store or a Certified dealer for repair.
Hope this helps,
Matt

  • Please help! Leopard keeps restarting!

After recommendation, I post my question also here:
    Hello everyone,
I was installing some gcc libraries and unfortunately something went wrong with the permissions and most of my applications were not working - they crashed immediately after start. When I was reading the crash reports I have found that one library had wrong permission - libstdc++.6.dylib should have been linked to libstdc++.6.0.4.dylib. I have changed it manually because Disk Utility did not help, but then I was not able to start any application. After restart the system does not boot but it keeps restarting after a while (apple logo appears and after ca. 30 sec. the computer restarts)
Is there any way how to repair it without loosing the data? Or the disk should be erased and system reinstaled?
Thank you very much for your answers!

I don't disagree with any of the advice given here but there are several extra things that can be done to improve ones chances in future:
1 - Install AppleJack - it may or may not have resolved this issue but it is a very useful utility especially as it can repair the active volume even when it will not boot normally - be warned that it takes as long as Disk Utility to repair permissions so consider running this option overnight.
2 - Split your disk into several partitions (volumes) and install an OS on each. Backup all data before you try this - I have little experiences of adding partitions to a working disk but I think it can be done.
    My G4 has three volumes:
A - my normal working Leopard
B - a basic clean relatively unused Leopard
C - Tiger combined with a full OS 9.2.2 which I can use as Classic or boot into directly.
This gives me four bootable OSs. The options may be reduced for later hardware but the principle remains the same. If all else fails I can hold the option key down at boot to select whichever OS I want. I can also swap disks or use DVDs etc but these things take longer.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner from time to time to put complete replicas of my volumes onto one of my 750 GB SATA disks. These are useful because they can be easily opened to find a lost or damaged item or returned to my main disk as a bootable volume. However, now that all the bugs have been removed, most people will find Time Machine much simpler to use.
As previously indicated, it is surprising how much can be done in Single User Mode to overcome booting difficulties. Experience or luck help considerably. My Unix experience is very limited but I was lucky to find a way to boot my Xserve when a problem arose during a short term lack of an alternative bootable volume. • Windows explorer need to keep restarting

On my A205-s5825 windows explorer often hangs and and needs to restart. It happens several times a day sometimes. I have one gig memory, Vista. Would increasing to 2 gigs help or it some other problem?
    Mike

    Satellite A205-S5825
I can't guarantee that Windows Explorer will stop hanging, but I can guarantee that Vista will run faster.
No computer should have been sold with only 1 GB of RAM when Windows Vista is installed.
Get the memory from Toshiba Direct or buy memory made by Kingston. Those are the only ones you can trust to be in spec.
See the section Adding memory (optional) starting on p. 50 of the User's Guide.

  • Why does my 2010 MBP keep restarting itself after upgrading to Yosemite?

This problem actually started once I upgraded to Mavericks - my MacBook Pro will randomly restart itself every 30 seconds - 15 minutes or so. I don't really have a good estimate of the occurrence though since it is so random and there seems to be no rhyme or reason. The only thing I can say is that it pretty much always restarts if I am resizing windows. When I upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, it kept restarting itself but now it restarts twice every time! It's added an additional restart in the middle of the boot up screen. I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the original software and then reinstalled all the software upgrades and the problem persists. I know I should probably take it in to see a Genius as my best guess is that there seems to be an error with the graphics card, but I'm a college student on a very tight budget, so if there's anything I can do myself to fix this that would be great! Any help is appreciated! Here is the text from the last kernel panic:

Just thought I would reply here in case anyone finds this post and has the same problem.
I downloaded this app: https://gfx.io/  and set my graphics card to "integrated only" and it has solved the problem. Just remember to always set it to "integrated only" if it's not already set to that after anytime you restart your computer.

  • Ahh help my ipod keeps restarting

Now this is different from the previous thread.
My ipod touch just got the recent update, and I downloaded a couple apps.
The apps kept restarting, so naturally, I go to reset my ipod.
But now only the apple symbol shows up, then that circular loading symbol, then it freezes, restarts, and repeats.
If I plug it into my computer, it only keeps making that plugging in sound.
    What do I doooo

    I'm not seeing anything
    *Here's the problem:*
    I have recovery-restored it twice.
I keep using the backup file.
Absolutely everything is up to date.
However, it keeps only showing the apple symbol.
I've restarted it countless times, it will not let me get to the main menu.
It only shows the apple symbol, that's all I am seeing, then it cuts off, and restarts.
    It's one big circular motion.
    That's it.
Now when I plug it in, it doesn't go to the main menu, still just apple symbol.
HOWEVER, my computer recognizes it's there, both in normal or recovery mode.
However, it still does not let me get to the main menu, but instead keeps making the plugging-in noise over and over and over until it restarts, and does the exact same again and again.

  • Help! Phone keeps restarting. Cannot shut down. Don't know how to access battery.

help!!! my phone just went nuts & I can't even turn it off! The start screen just keeps going on & on & on. I went through all the FAQS & can't even figure out how to remove battery. I am recently widowed & am electronically challenged on a good day. I'm in tears tonight. If anyone can help...

Tracy, it sounds to me like you'd be happier with a basic phone. Do not pay for an expensive smartphone and monthly data plan when all you want is something to make calls. You have 14 days to return it, and do not let the rep talk you into another smartphone if that is not what you want.
You can buy a basic phone here, on amazon.com, on eBay, etc. I have seen the original RAZRs (the nonsmartphones) sold new on eBay. If you buy there, make sure it's Verizon branded, not prepay only, and it has a clean electronic serial number (ESN) that you check with Verizon before you pay for the phone.
Another idea: You can buy a new LG Cosmos 2, a messaging phone, off-contract for $150 on Amazon, or get it through Verizon on a two-year contract.
Good luck and please post back if you have any other questions.

  • HT204406 Need to keep restarting match

Why do my itunes match tracks show up as gray, and when I turn match off then back on, they are playable? I need to do this daily, and it's getting annoying.
The majority of my files reside on my home computer, it's my work computer I need to do this with. Latest version of Lion, latest itunes.
My tracks are all available, all the time on my iphone.

It's may not be an issue with the internet speed, although it'd be helpful to know what that is.
It will be more an issue with the local network, other devices working does not rule that out. Ensure DNS is set properly, try Ethernet, get a network report (istumbler, Netstumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks)

  • Help needed:MBP net connection slow on OSX but fast on Vista...

Ok..I've searched these forums for a while, seen lots of posts taking about people having problems with their airport card, routers and the like..but I haven't seen anyone having quite the same problem as me. My 17" 2.33Ghz C2D is linked to my 1Mb ADSL internet connection via an Aztech DSL600EW modem router. The problem is that the connection speed is really slow when I'm running the machine on OSX. I know it's an OSX thing cos the same machine, connected to the same router and running Windows Vista via Bootcamp will connect to the net ALOT faster. For example, if I'm viewing videos on youtube with OSX, I have to wait every few seconds for the video to buffer, but on Vista, the buffering is way ahead of the video. Another example would be downloading files...say from rapidshare. The typical download speed I get on OSX would be around 5-10Kbps, but with Vista, I get at least 25Kbps.
I'm quite new to OSX, and still trying to learn my way around the operating system. It seems such a pity for a really great machine with a really great operating system to be let down by slow internet connection. I hope someone out there will be able to help me sort this out. Thanks in advance.

Great, happy that it "seems to speed up things ..." Why not run the SpeedTest and "know?"
I use IPNetTuner ($30, free 21 day trial).

"*Why is it Sometimes Necessary To Tune TCP/IP*?
TCP/IP is not controlled by any manufacturer and is designed to work on almost any kind of underlying network with widely varying characteristics.
To meet this challenge, the protocol designers made TCP adaptive. TCP is self monitoring and optimizes its own behavior to match the network environment.
*Why can't somebody just write a utility that analyzes my network and automatically selects the optimum settings?* Such a tool would be both useful and popular. The answer is they already have, it's called TCP/IP, but sometimes it needs a little help.
In most cases, TCP works remarkably well all by itself. Tuning is needed in those cases where TCP doesn't quite get it right because the the network behavior is outside the expected range. Typical problems include:
Asymmetric connections that are much faster downstream than upstream.
High performance connections with relatively long latency ..."

  • MBP keeps restarting at 2 minutes left of installing ML from SL

I started with latest Snow Leopard, no Filevault, repaired disk and permissions first, backed up via TimeMachine. Downloaded ML, started the install with "37 minutes left". At 2 minutes, I get a gray screen saying system is restarting, then it all starts all over again  from the Installing screen. It is now on its 6th or 7th cycle of this.
How do I get back to Snow Leopard, or otherwise interrupt the cycle without hosing files?
    Other suggestions? It's a mid-2009 MBP, 8GB RAM, 100GB left on HD.
    Thanks.
    =Steve

I tried again and Command-R did get me to the Recovery Disk. Doing as you suggest resulted in a window saying "Additional resources being downloaded..." or something like that, and it gives me a time bar, taking over 30 minutes. Then, it reboots and goes into the Install routine.... "37 minutes..."  -- When it gets to 2 minutes left, it reboots itself back into the Installing ML routine... back to the loop.
Taking a look deeper, this is from the ia.log that the Installer creates. Note that the last thing it does before prematurely rebooting is it starts to set the Startup Disk and "Bless on / succeeded". Using TDM, it looks like the installation is all there on the drive (I redid it with a clean install on an empty drive). I've even tried rebooting holding down Option key to choose the boot drive, but it doesn't work.

  • Help needed: blackberry keeps resetting or won't turn on after charging, especially via USB

This is a bit of an odd one and I'd appreciate any help that others can give me.
I've had my blackberry 8900 for about a year and a half now.
Whenever I charge my handset from an empty battery (e.g. this problem isn't a problem when I charge it if there's still some charge left) - either from the main power charger or via USB, I experience problems.
Whenever it's fully charged I unplug the charger and normally at this point it cuts out completely. The screen goes black and cuts out - it doesn't even go through the normal switch-off process. From then, it won't turn on for around 3 - 4 minutes (the red light occasionally appears on the top, although it's fully charged).
When it does turn on, it goes through a soft reset.
This is more of a problem when I charge it via USB but equally affects charging it from the mains as well.
    Any ideas?

It's fixable. First, charge it for several hours and then WITH the
charger still connected, remove the battery a minute and replace, and
    reboot.
If that does not do it, and it continues in the reboot loop
    1)
Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2)
On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line
exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program
    files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3)
The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In
the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN".
    Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of
applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and
Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to
life. Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish
    completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications
mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop
Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that
you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service
provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's
Operating System for your carrier and device.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
    Just
select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry
model from the list and download the latest version. Install this
download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right
    path.

  • Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting Itself and then totally crashed

    Dear all.
    I am using Macbook Pro 13-inch (i7 2.9 Ghz, 8 GB DDR3, 750 GB) with OS X Maverick (10.9.4).
For the last few months, my Macbook Pro kept restarting itself and I usually ignored this issue until yesterday, my MBP fail to boot up, only display the grey apple logo and rolling icon below for almost 30 mins.
I tried the safe mode and reset NVRAM method and it still fail to boot up and sometimes a black text appears (aka kernel panic).
Then i took my macbook pro to the nearest Apple service provider and the technician said that it was probably due to the 750 GB Hard Disk since the HD itself is a faulty product, therefore we can't find any 750 GB HD nowadays. So he recommended me to replace my current HD with a new HD. I took his advice and I replaced it with 1 TB Toshiba HD. And then the technician reformat my MBP and installed the OS X Maverick. My Macbook pro able to boot up now.
However the next day I still find my MBP keeps restarting itself (until now) and take note that I didn't install any new softwares, I only updated the available  updates in Apps Store for the OS, iBooks, and iTunes.
Can anyone recommend me what to do? Is this a Hardware problem or software problem?
I'm thinking to switch back to OS Lion to see whether this is mainly due to OS Maverick.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately yes.   Since the computer is unable to boot up, that part of the software starts BEFORE the OS would.  Last time I had this problem, it turned out to be a faulty GPU (soldered to the logic board) and i needed to replace the logic board.    If you wanted to, you could indeed back up your personal data (you should ANYWAY, no matter what you do)  and you could try to do a fresh install,  but I'm fairly confident you are experiencing either faulty ram, or a faulty logic board.

  • Computer keeps restarting after installing windows 8

Can you help my computer keeps restarting after I installed Windows 8?  I have the minidump file zipped

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up
to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.
If you are overclocking stop.  (chances are if you dont know if you are, you are not)a
To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.
    The procedure:
    * Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
    * Zip up the copy.
    * Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button. (if available on  your site, MS doesnt have this)
*Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or"Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
Link for how to  upload below.
    http://www.wikihow.com/Use-SkyDrive
    To ensure minidumps are enabled:
    * Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
    * Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
    * Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
    * Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
    * Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    * OK your way out.
    * Reboot if changes have been made.
Please also run MSinfo32 and upload the output as well.
To run MSinfo32 please go to start>run>MSinfo32
Go to "file" "save" and upload the saved file with the DMPS

I need help for iphone keep restarting after 60 seconds, when I update ios 5.0.1 (9A405), how to overcome these problems

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If this does not help, setting it back to factory settings would be the next step:
