Help needed on Final Cut usage in newsroom

I think I have finally convinced the newspaper where I work as a video feature producer, The Charleston Gazette in Charleston, W.Va., to switch our video feature production from Premiere Elements and a Canon G-11 still camera (that happens to shoot video) to Final Cut, a dedicated video cam and Macintosh computers. Right now, they likely are only going to approve purchase of one or two Macs, Final Cut Express (or Pro) and a single camera, to start. Below is a draft of what I am thinking of recommending but I would love feedback from more experienced hands on this forum, especially anyone who has to hand-hold video newbies working in a deadline situation. I myself am a poorly self-taught video producer just beginning to learn Final Cut. So, two pieces of feedback requested:
1/ FEEDBACK 1: Should I recommend purchasing Final Cut Express or Pro, given that I am just learning FCE myself and will likely have to guide other staffers in use of the program? Maybe it would be best to stick with the simpler learning curve of FCE? Or are the added bells-and-whistles of Pro worth the added learning curve?
2/ FEEDBACK 2: My thought is to recommend purchasing a 17-inch MacBook Pro with either FCE or Final Cut Pro and a camera like a Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder (although other suggestions are welcome). One of the issues with our website is we can only upload .flv or mp4 video files to the site, preferably below 20 MB in size (you can see the current quality at http://wvgazette.com/multimedia)

Go with Final Cut Studio. It will allow you to ingest using ProRes LT, a high quality, low overhead codec. You will also get Compressor for encoding your media.
There is a substantial learning curve ahead into which you should be prepared to invest time and resources. As an Apple certified trainer (and former news producer) I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to learn to use an application efficiently, especially for news applications.

You need at least FCP 6 to be able to use the camera at all.
AVCHD footage can be transferred using the Log and Transfer window in Final Cut Pro.
Once you have transferred your footage, you can edit using an appropriate Apple
Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec Easy Setup.
You can transfer AVCHD footage to your scratch disk using the Log and Transfer
window in Final Cut Pro. During transfer, you can choose whether the Log and
Transfer window transcodes your footage to the Apple Intermediate Codec or the
Apple ProRes 422 codec.
Important: Although it is possible to copy AVCHD files directly to your scratch disk,
Final Cut Pro won’t recognize these files. You must use the Log and Transfer window
to transfer and transcode AVCHD footage.
For more information, in the FCP Menu select Help>HD and Broadcast Formats where you will find a section describing how to work with AVCHD.

NEED HELP Deciding. new final cut and a powerpc4

I have a power mac G4 and I want to know will the new final cut package work on it? My pc has a radeon 9000 pro, dual 1.25 processors,, memory 1.25.
i just want to know if final cut and the other programs will work on it. I do not do HD and when i do i will buy another but for Sd is this ok to run and buy the new fc.

I'd think you will be able to run FCS 2. Your computer is above all of the minimum specs, only wild card here is your graphics card. It has enough VRAM ... just not listed in the compatible cards. Bet it works OK though. Look at the Motion and Color minimums. FCP will work without a hitch in any event, and so should compressor, LiveType, and DVD SP. You could upgrade it if you find it lacking but I'd give it a go with the card you have to see if you're OK first.

I need help accessing my final cut movie.

Okay, so I've been at college working on a final cut project, and I was almost done, but then I came home.
I made the file in the latest final cut express, and now I'm trying to open the file in final cut pro 4.5
However, when I try to open it, it inexplicably closes final cut pro.
Any suggestions?
Is there some program like a final cut reader or something I could use just to export the file?

Can Final Cut Express export to XML? This is your best route if this is possible.
Also bear in mind that FCP 4.5 is very old and some of the features you are using with FCE may not be available.

I need help with my Final Cut Express HD

When I click on Final Cut Express HD file, it is saying I have an error and it will open, why is this happening? It was working before and now it is not.

There is absolutely no way anyone can know what is causing the problem unless you give full details of your computer setup, what you have been doing etc. etc.
It's like telling a doctor you are not feeling well and giving him (or her) no more information.
The only possible advice with so little to go on would be to Trash the Preferences and if that didn't work, completely UNINSTALL and reinstall FCE:-

My final cut pro won't export or share just keeps saying 'The operation could not be completed. (com.apple.compressor.compressorkit.errordomain error -1)

Is App Nap disabled for FCP X? In finder, select FCP X, get info, uncheck the app nap box.
We need to knwo alot more in order to be abvle to help you - What ver. FCP X? What ver. OS X? Your hardware?

Help Me about Final Cut Studio Upgrade.

I'm a student studied Editing in KOREA.
I had used Final Cut Studio 5.1 now.
and I wanted to upgrade FCP Studio 7. so I bought Final Cut Studio Upgrade 7 last week.
And then I tried to installed, and I sucessed upgrade once. but it was not perpectly.
So I re-installed from beginning(FCPS 5.1) yesterday.
But now I can upgrade to FCPS 7 from FCPS 5.1.
Because It said "My serial number is not vaild." again and again.
(so I did format my mac book pro. and I installed from beginning, Mac OS X, iLife, iWork...FCPS 5.1. But I have same problem."
I can't understand this situation. and I don't know the solution.
I'm sorry to no support line about software in KOREA. T.T

If your 5.1 version was an academic version, it is not eligible for upgrade.
But you say that the upgrade installed once, but not "perpectly" (whatever that means). Specifically, what went wrong with the first install?
By the way, you don't need to have the older version on your computer to install an upgrade; all you need is the serial number from a legal RETAIL copy. If you own a legal retail copy (not academic) and are still having installation problems, contact Apple.

Help with installing Final Cut Studio package

I have a copy of Final Cut Studio 2.0.1. I would like to know if there is a way to create an image file to combine all disks into 1 file. This would help in installing, since I only have one set of disks. I don't want to risk ruining any of the disks, since I have a lab of 30 computers to install Final Cut Studio 2 on.
I have the following disks:
Final Cut Studio Install
Audio Content 1
Audio Content 2
Audio Content 3
Motion Content
LiveType Media 1
LiveType Media 2

Shane, I have all 8 FCP disks saved as a dmg file. I am currently storing these in a share on our NEW Apple XSERVE. I have tried mounting all of the 8 dmg files to the desktop of the iMac, that I'm wanting to install on. But this takes an unusally long time, I cancelled it after a couple days of it trying to mount the images to the desktop.
I'm very green to using Apples, just something that has been dropped in my lap.
Is there a way that I can mount these images in the folder on the Xserve? of is using a portable HDD the only way to do it.

Help in installing Final Cut Studio 5.1 Academic

Help! I had to uninstall old versions of Final Cut Studio.
I now am trying to install Final Cut Studio 5.1 Academic. Installer rejects the serial number every time. I don't know what to do.
It's a valid serial number; I have the packaging right here in front of me. It's old (purchased November 2006) but that shouldn't matter, right?

Thanks for the reply. I was able to read the disc on my Macbook Pro and I copied all of the folders on the install disc onto my flash drive. I plugged it into my iMac and it gave me the following error message: The alias "Install Final Cut Studio" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. Delete Alias, Fix Alias, or OK. Deleting the alias just moves the install file to the trash bin. Fixing the Alias asks me to Choose the item that you want alias to "Install Final Cut Studio" to open.
I could not figure out what to do after this. Any clues?

Hey there ok since my camcorder does not work with final cut pro 6 i want one that will but i wenty and looked theres tons of cameras that qualify.. can someone tell me the very best video cameras that i could get for over 600 dollars but under 1200$ because i want soemthing really good wuality and easy good to use but i also dont want something that is stupid quality like i want good quality like hd or something... I just got final cut studio and im trying to install it but i can't find the Serial number anywhere can someone please tell me where it should be located thanks

The serial number stickers are usually located on the booklet entitled; "Installing Your Software."

Please Help...Final Cut Pro X is froze while it was trying to render

I am having horrible luck with Final Cut Pro X, as I was adding an effect to a clip it rendered very slow and finally just froze, so I forced quit FCP and now everytime I re-open FCP it is stuck on the same clip and will not allow me to do anything, its just froze.

Ok I have been trying to read and find other problems going on here, I think format might have a huge amount to do with it. I read that FCX works fine with H.264 but that doesnt seem to be the case.
Most of my work that I do in editing is from Game recordings using the Hauppauge HDPVR and this exports raw in H.264 however I tested an export clip in Quicktime Movie format. Now this takes longer to export but it uploaded into Final Cut. and functioned and didnt crash the program.
The problem also is that the H.264 file is much smaller than a Quicktime file
H.264 file - 65mb
Quicktime file - 182mb
Now the downside here is that I wouldnt be able to import my imovie library - frustrating but not the end of the world.
My next question is, could all my problems be caused just from the H.264 format that Eyetv exports in, and also as Quicktime format seems to work what would be my other options.
Is Finalcut even more selective about what formats work for it than imovie?
If anyone has other suggestions im all ears im not even 100% if I can keep the program if its going to be really problematic in this way but I really want to try and give it a good chance

Of course once you sell it, you can not use that license as the basis for an upgrade version to be installed on your computer. Upgrade licenses require you have ALL the previous versions in your control.

Help needed to find CPU Usages

I am trying to find the CPU usages of a machine and need help regarding it.I have a JNI Code , which I am unable to compile/create a .dll file using Microsoft VC++. However . I am not sure about the JNI Code that I have( got it in the net).. If anybody can help please, I am in a tight situation.
My question is how to find the CPU Usages (I know all the procedure) , all I need is an example ...

If you need CPU usage of single process then it's easy to use GetProcessTimes().
If you need to know overall loading then read about registry like interface for performance data. This code little bit complex to post it here especially without comments so it's better to read original paper on say MSDN.
