Help needed recovering project files from trash

Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone will be able to help me. I just did something stupid!
I created two new projects in iMovie this morning and then needed to clear out the mac in order to speed up a clip as I was getting the warning that my disk was full. So I copied a lot of files from iPhoto onto a hard drive and then moved them to trash including the raw files that I was using for these projects. (I got a bit carried away!) Yes the video files were in iPhoto and not iMovie Events as the last time I uploaded files iMovie was not playing the game.
The files are still on the mac as I have not emptied the trash and they are also backed up on an external drive connected to the mac, but I have emptied the iPhoto trash. I tried importing the files back into iPhoto from trash and only got so far before the disk full message came up again. But even those ones that I did manage to re import are not showing up.
Is there any way that I can continue with these projects or have I effectively ruined them? Do I need to start again from scratch? I hope not as they took me hours and hours to create and had pretty much finished them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-)

To see these "other" backups, you need the Browse Other Backup Disks or (Browse Other Time Machine Disks on Snow Leopard or Leopard) option.  It's available by Alt/Option-clicking the Time Machine icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the Time Machine icon in your Dock.

  • Help to restore iTunes files from trash, not deleted.

    I need to move 35,000 podcasts, 654 GB, from my trash back to my iTunes library on an external hard drive (EHD). They are NOT deleted from my trash.
    I am running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 until I can clear enough EHD space to backup/upgrade to Mtn Lion.
    11.5 iTunes is my current version on my 640 GB early 2009 24” mac.
    I have tried:
    Undo - command + Z
    Selecting all in trash and dragging it to the:
    iTunes Music folder on my EHD
    Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD
    The upper left corner on the iTunes window
    The iTunes icon in the dock
    There is no restore option when I Right Click on anything in trash, single or more than one file.
    In iTunes: File, Add to Library, selecting the recycle bin or the file under it. Nothing happens. I do have checked on iTunes Preferences, Advanced, Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
    Dragging 40 files from trash to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD.
    This returned the files but without essential data like the release date/description, which totally messes up my library.
    They are no longer listed in date order, and I cannot see if I have the most recent without scrolling down down through sometimes over 200 pods in that album, and even then there is no date order, which orders all podcasts. All the tags/descriptions/comments I spent thousands of hours on are gone.
    I just recieved in the mail yesterday my Data Rescue 3 software for an earlier problem,
    I do not know if it will help retrieve all the essential data.
    I cannot move the files to my desktop because the size, 654 GB, is bigger than my 640 GB mac. Plus, I know from experience this does not preserve the essential data like release date.
    My iTunes EHD has 485 GB free out of 1.71 TB.
    I can order another 3 TB EHD to arrive in 2 weeks, which I will eventually need, but my husband aint going to be happy. As an old photographer trying to join the digital age, I already have 20 TB storage, mostly for photos, which has put us in debt.
    Please, does anyone know how to restore podcasts from trash while retaining metadata?

    Thanks for your sympathy, dclkdm.
    For anybody else out there,
    I have had some luck retaining info such as release date, plays, and rating by
    dragging podcasts to a Finder folder in iTunes,
    in iTunes Media,
    Automatically Add to iTunes.
    So far, I have retrieved all my lost podcasts with Data Rescue 3,
    but have not tried to consolidate everything into one library yet.

  • Help needed ASAP -- Project file won't open

    Stuck in Africa right now (can't call telephone support).
    I am volunteering on a medical/dental trip and am in charge of the final nights video.
    Here is the problem.
    I am almost done with the video (15 minutes long -- full HD) and suddenly the when I click on the project from the project library it won't open.
    all the other projects open fine. Just this one project won't.
    when I click on it, the project library slides to the side, but behind it is another project library, but when I mouse over it plays the movie, but it is un-editable in this state.
    It was working great until this dreadful moment....
    I saw another post about deleting the thumbnails for an EVENT that was having problems. Can this be done with a PROJECT file?
    The big movie presentation/trip is in 12 hours....
    Can anyone help me???

    One time, after quitting IM and re-launching it later, my project disappeared from the project list.
    Apple Support told me to do this.
    1) quit IM
    2) with the finder, move the project out of the project directory
    3) launch IM
    4) quit IM
    5) with the finder, put the project back into the project directory
    6) launch IM
    My project re-appeared. He said these steps forces a project index to be rebuilt.
    Your symptoms are different but maybe the cure is the same --- good luck.

  • Help needed creating export file from a file layout with Application Engine

    The following is what I would like to do:
    - Read a record from a PS view
    - Manipulate the data as needed
    - Write the fields out to a file as defined by a File Layout
    - Repeat until no more records are found
    I have created the PeopleSoft Application Engine action listed below. It receives an error "BCUNIT is not a property of class File".
    Local Record &rec1;
    Local File &myFile;
    Local SQL &sQL1;
    /* Create instance of Record */
    &rec1 = CreateRecord(Record.W9M_MBSCRSE_VW);
    /* Instantiate the Output File */
    &myFile = GetFile("c:\temp\help_me.txt";, "A", %FilePath_Absolute);
    If &myFile.IsOpen Then
    If &myFile.SetFileLayout(FileLayout.TACOURIN) Then
    /* Create SQL object to populate rowset */
    &sQL1 = CreateSQL("%Selectall(:1) Where INSTITUTION = :2", &rec1, W9M_MBSCRSE_AET.INSTITUTION);
    /* Cycle through the records */
    While &sQL1.Fetch(&rec1)
    /* I know this section is not coded correctly but I'm not sure how to fix it */
    &myFile.BCUNIT = "1";
    &myFile.BCTCD = &rec.W9M_MBS_TERM_CODE;
    &myFile.BCTYR = &rec.W9M_MBS_TERM_YEAR;
    &myFile.BCDPTN = &rec.ACAD_GROUP;
    &myFile.BCCOUR = substring(&rec.CATALOG_NBR,2,5);
    &myFile.BCSEC = &rec.CLASS_SECTION;
    &myFile.WriteRecord();
    End-While;
    Else
    /* Process FileLayout Error here */
    End-If;
    Else
    /* Process File Open Error here */
    End-If;
    &myFile.Close();
    There are probably a lot of things wrong with this approach and if you could provide some guidance and/or  corrections to the above logic I would greatly appreciate it.
    Another approach?
    After doing a bunch of reading on Application Engine maybe my approach is incorrect. Perhaps I should be doing something like the following:
    - Read a record from a PS view
    - Populate a temporary table manipulating data as it is inserted (Temp table is named according to the file layout fields?)
    - Fetch the records from the temp table and write the record to the file layout.
    - Repeat until no more records are found
    Is this approach better and designed correctly? If not, could you recommend how it should be done? Would the population and reading of the Temp table be done in separate actions or within the same action? Do you know of an Application Engine program that can be used as an example with "like" processing?
    As you can probably tell I haven't used Application Engine before and my goal is to start out on the right path. Thank you for any direction and input that you can provide.
    Steve

    I did and my initial logic was based upon them. I don't see where it shows how to manipulate the data before writing it to the file layout fields. Maybe you can send me a link to that section?
    I was hoping that I would be able to reference the file layout fields directly to allow for manipulating the field values. Re-reading the file layout section and the application engine PeopleBooks I believe I need to create a temporary record which matches the file layout fields; i.e., the second alternative that I listed. Then, make my updates to the temp record fields as I load them. Then, load them to the file layout as a row.
    I'm not sure how this would break down in Application Engine; would the insert into the temp table and the writerecord be different steps/actions, etc.

  • HELP! Need to restore corrupt file/recover deleted file from LIGHTROOM Catalog

    Hi,
    I recently edited a wedding I finished and sent to her via WeTransfer.  It showed that she opened the file, so I deleted it off of my computer.  A few days later she said she couldn't open the file because it was corrupt (at this point I couldn't resend because I had deleted it as stated).
    She sent it back to me to see if I could try opening -- but every time I try to open in Lightroom it reads:
    Unexpected Error Opening Catalog
    The Catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error.
    Can ANYONE help me recover this file?? I've also tried to run a Data Recovery software to retrieve it from the trash, but it won't recognize .lrcat files (it brought up all of the .jpegs, photoshop, .tiff files etc -- but no lightroom catalogs.
    I REALLY really really don't want to have to re-edit 1000 photos again.
    Thanks so much in advance for any advice xo

    I've attached the two messages I got :
    Uh, yeah - it's not an archive and so you don't want to try and expand it as if it was one.
    I'm not sure which SQLite app you are using. I think SQLite Spy is Windows-only, but for Mac, maybe:

    Other Mac users may have more recommendations.
    Once you get a real SQLite app, then open the .lrcat file with it.

    Help help. I found an icon of my desktop in a folder with personal docs. thought it was strange so I threw it in the trash. and I had LOTS of files laying out on the desktop- then I emptied trash. Yikes. very very dumb I know. BUT
    How can I retrieve the files that had been on my desktop that got emptied in trash?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    First, stop using your computer immediately to avoid your files being overwritten.
    Dr. Smoke's FAQ Data Recovery has complete directions to help you recover your files, if they are recoverable.
    Please post back with further questions or comments.

    Once the trash is emptied only professional $$$ Applications will perform this feat and only if the filespace hasn't been overwritten yet.

    What computer operating system is involved?
    There is no guarantee that a project created in an earlier version can be opened in a later one. Many times it can, but...
    If you do try this, then please consider working from a copy of the project 10 project file and then trying to open that in 13/13.1.
    Reason: projects created in an earlier version and then opened and edited in a later version cannot be opened again in the
    earlier version.
    And, there is always the issue of maintaining the connect of the source media with the project file. Is this move from 10 to 13/13.1
    happening on the same computer and are the source media in the same place where they were when they were first imported
    into the 10 project. Disc menus consideration may enter into this depending on your details.

    How i can recover deleted files from icloud,,I had a backup copy on iCloud for whatsapp application and I lost it,,I need bring it back what I have to do

    You can't download pictures from iCloud by logging into icloud.com.  If you deleted pictures from camera roll AND photo stream, the only possibility is preforming a restore from an iCloud backup, assuming the backup has the pictures in it.  (Many users have been unable to restore and get back their pictures.)
    If the restore doesn't have all the pictures, then they are gone.
    In the future, use photo stream to sync photos from an iPhone to a computer, then copy the photos on the computer from the photo stream album into a permanent album.  Photo stream pics stay there only for 30 days, and only up to 1000 photos are stored.  Don't use photo stream as a storage medium, it's only for copying photos from one device to another.  Always copy (either via USB cable or photo stream) to a computer and then move to an album.

  • Using Data Rescue II to recover lost files from corrupt hard drive!!!

    OK I am terribly confused. I found out my MacBook Pro hard drive is corrupt and I can't even start up my computer. I was told to get Data Rescue II, another Mac, and an external hard drive.
    I have all of the above but have no idea how to make it work!! How do I access the corrupt HD on the current iMac I am using with Data Rescue and then transfer the found files to the external HD??? Please I need help asap!!

    First, if you have an external drive, then install OS X on the external drive. Boot from the external drive, install Data Rescue, then run Data Rescue and see if you are able to recover any files from the bad drive.
    You boot from the external drive by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the external drive then click on the down arrow button.
    If you do not have an external drive then you can try connecting the two computers with a FireWire cable and booting the computer with the bad drive into Target Disk Mode. Boot the good computer normally. Install Data Rescue and run it to see if you can recover anything from the bad drive. My guess is this method will not likely work, but one never knows without trying.
    BTW, have you tried the following:
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Cannot open Project files from previous FCPX versions

    Hello,
    I'm currently on 10.0.8, and have not upgraded to 10.1.1.  Here is my issue:
    A documentary project I've been working on since 10.0.1 is not showing up in 10.0.8, and I'm wondering how to "manually" update the Project.  I upgraded FCPX versions a few times while working on this Project (I think all the way up to 10.0.4), but then I stopped as I noticed it was negatively affecting parts of my project and making the application run slow (and Apple recommends you don't update versions while in the middle of a project).  I finished that project, but now fast forward and I'm in 10.0.8 and I need to revisit that Project to make a few changes, but FCPX won't even recognize it.  It successfully updated and recognizes the Events I used for this particular Project, but not the Project itself.
    Any help/suggestions would be great.
    Thank you!

    Thanks Russ.  After all this time, I actually solved the problem myself.  I forgot that back 6 months ago, I renamed my Project file, from the default "CurrentVersion".  I just came across another post that said you're not supposed to do that, so I changed my Project file back to "CurrentVersion" and now FCPX recognizes it.  After all that toil, the answer was just too simple!!
    Thanks.

  • How do I retrieve a file from Trash using Time Machine in Mavericks?

    Is it even possible to retrieve a file from Trash from a Time Machine backup? Does Time Machine even back up the Trash? I've been told a total restore from a Time Machine backup will put the past Trash back on the Mac, but what if I just want to restore an individual file?
    Shortly after emptying my Trash on my Mac (10.9.4) for the first time in weeks, I realized I needed one of the files I'd just erased. Trying to retrieve with Time Machine was not fruitful, however, because I couldn't find the file on any of the past backups using the normal Enter Time Machine interface. However, I know it would have been in the Trash during all of the most recent backups.
    So I researched how to find the backups of Trash with Time Machine, but I think all of the solutions I found on various online forums were pre-Mavericks and do not seem to work now. I've basically tried 2 things:
    Show Trash in Finder using the Terminal command: open ~/.Trash
    It shows the hidden Trash folder in Finder, located in Macintosh HD/Users/User. For easy access, I added the .Trash folder to the Finder Sidebar. But I can't get to it in the backups. The Trash shortcut in the Finder Sidebar is always grayed out in the old backups using the Time Machine app. And it does not show up in ~ when looking through the backups.backupdb folder on my external HD.
    I also tried the Terminal command to show all hidden files in Finder: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
    But while many hidden files do suddenly appear in Finder, curiously, the User's .Trash folder is not one. This is true for the Finder of the Mac, the backups.backupdb folder on the External HD, and Time Machine app.
    Thanks.

    How do I retrieve a file from my backup in Time Capsule?
    It depends on the type of file that you are trying to retreive.
    In general.....
    Open Time Machine by clicking on the clock icon on the dock
    Wait a few minutes for Time Machine to fully load
    Use the timeline at the far right of the window to go back in time to a date when the file was still on your Mac
    Click that date
    Navigate using the Finder interface to locate the file that you want
    Click on the file to highlight it
    Click Restore at the lower right of the window to be brought back to the present
    You have to retrieve other types of files differently. For details, see:

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
    If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
    If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
    If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
    The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
    Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
