Help needed: system crash during instalation of security update 2008-003

after beginning instalation of security update 2008-003, at the "optimizing system stage", the computer started heating up (to extreme levels) and became stuck completely - except entering and leaving sleep mode when i shut the lid, there is no response i can get.
what can be the reason of this and what can i do about this?

Welcome to the Forums.
Did you repair disk and permissions, before doing the Security Update?... If not.
Boot from Install Disc, and select your language. From the Menu Bar Select Utilities>Disk Utility
After selecting your Mac OS X Repair Disk and reboot.
Then, from Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions.

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.

  • Uninstall Security Update 2008-003

One of my iMacs (G4) is crashing repeatedly now after installing the Security Update 2008-003. (My employee installed it against my orders, mistakenly).
Is there any way to un-install this update?
    Thanks

Have you booted from the installer disc and run Disk Utility to verify, and if necessary repair, the drive? Also repair permissions (can be done when booted from the hard drive). Probably most problems with the security updates can be avoided by performing this maintenance before and after installing the updater.
It is also a very good idea to back-up your computer before installing updates and even before running maintenance utilities just in case something goes wrong.

  • Security Update 2008-003 Intel not installing

I installed MacOS 10.5.3 update successully but the security update2008-003 did not work. I downloaded the intel update and it starts ok until the HD chosen to be installed apperars. Even the Macintosh HD apperas with the red and X circle. What could have happened? Is there an error with the installer?

Security Update 2008-003 is included in 10.5.3. If you have 10.5.3 installed then you have all the contents of the 2008-003 security update already.

  • Mouse probs in 10.4.11 ppc since Security Update 2008-003

I have the Logitech S530 mac wireless keyboard/mouse combo running on my Cube with 10.4.11. Its worked perfectly right up until I installed the latest updates:
2008-05-28 20:34:40 -0500: Installed "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update" (2.1)
    2008-05-28 20:37:29 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2008-003 (PowerPC)" (1.0)
Now the mouse rapidly becomes unresponsive, it also will suddenly start acting like you "grabbed" something and start dragging it around the screen, moving the mouse to a spot and clicking in say a web form or something and clicking will not result in the cursor appearing in the box. I wiggle my mouse like mad a few times and it will suddenly start to work again for a few, then out of the blue it will start acting up again.
I tried reinstalling the Logitech Control Center, and thought it had fixed the problem, but it started up again a little while later.
Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

Have you tried the usual Disk Utility maintenance?

  • Safari & Software Update crash after installing latest Security Update

I recently loaded Security Update 2008-007 and now Safari crashes on trying to open. I've also found Software Update crashes. Trying to reload Safari and the downlaoad crashes. I'm running 10.5.5 on my G4 12" Powerbook. Any suggestions, before I permanently turn to Firefox? Which of course won't help with Security update

I found that reinstalling the system and not opting to install the security update stop the crashing let's hope the next security update doesn't do the same thing

  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

    SECURITY UPDATE 2015-003
i was surfing and all of sudden i had a completely WHITE-PALE-CREAM (i dont know) screen, no text-icons-nothing.
i then restart the iMac (27-inch Mid 2011, i7 3.4ghz) and it ALWAYS hangs on the apple logo, greyish screen, and the loading bar stops at about 20-25% then the white screen seems getting slightly darker (still light grey), but the apple logo goes away
and it stays like that no matter what.
recovery mode doesnt seem to work
this less than half a day i have installed this latest SECURITY UPDATE

    fixed (apparently)
    thank you :-)
i managed to get Internet Recovery
then (one of the many times) later, push only CTRL (i have tried hundred times many combinations with option, command, shift, control) on start up

ALT + CMD + S (single user) and wrote
    fsck -fy
did a couple of times as suggested on the internet until all looked fixed

    ALT + CMD + R
(+ i fully downloaded yosemite on an external hard disk on another mac)
as soon as i went back in, i verified-fixed the hard drive permissions etc.

  • Unexpected crash after installing XP security update

    I use K8T-Neo (FIS2R), with ATI 9800-Pro video card, Athlon-64.
Sytstem works fine until I install Win-XP updates. After installing some updates. I tought it is related to SP-2 as it crashed my system already twice. Recantly, having SP-1 only, I installed some MS security updates and it crashed again. The effect is that after displaying initial Win-XP logo it keeps rebooting. I had GoBack installed, as well as some other utils (RegRun) but none of those seem to be good enough to bring the system to the previous state. First time it had happened I had the most recent drivers from MSI and ATI as well installed (+ latest BIOS ver.)
I haven't done any overclocking, it is just standard plain configuration, however I hasve 2 SATA drives installed running RAID-0, and PSU is 500W. The bottom line is that system starts malfunctioning after installing XP updates, tough I don't know yet which particular downloaded file or driver causes crash.
I believe there is a problem either in MSI or ATI drivers.
I'm wondering if anybody had solve this type of problem ??

    Sounds new to me.
Did i get i right u changed nothing to the HW config ?
Try and repair the XP installation using the install CD (boot from it and choose repair).
How does it crash ? BSOD, freezes or restarts ?
BSOD's can be driver related, the others are HW related .

  • Mac CRASHES on restart after Security Update 2006-003 and QuickTime

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
i've just done TODAY's software update... and now when i boot up in to OS X, it is fine for about 10 seconds, until my Window Partition mounts, and the whole system freezes... does anyone else have this problem...
[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; retitled ]

Similar problem here. I installed the latest security update via software update. It rebooted twice and then the Aqua "starting Mac OS X" splash screen appears, the progress bar jumps to 100% very quickly and then the system goes into what looks like sleep mode (the power buttons dim like when it's asleep). It won't wake up after that or restart by holding the power button. Have to unplug it!
At first, I tried a couple times using the OPT key to try and boot from another disk and it ignored it and went to sleep as above. Then, I tried using the SHIFT key to try and boot into safe mode and the screen stayed black and it didn't seem to be doing anything. After that, I tried OPT again and it booted successfully. Now it seems to be booting normally again. Try booting with SHIFT key held down and then reboot normally to see if that works.
This is very, very bad. I am afraid.

  • Unable to install Security Update 2008-003 (Intel)

Software update found the security update, but when I tried to install it there was some error and the installer pkg was moved to the trash. Software update recognized this, told me it happened and that I should try to open the pkg manually. Still didn't work. I went to the Apple Downloads page, downloaded the update again, and that one wouldn't install either.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Any ideas?

ok, it took me a while to get disk first aid going. found a bunch of incorrect permissions that needed repairing, but otherwise no problems.
I wanted to get my new backup hard drive before I started messing with the install disk, so it's been many steps.
I've got software update trying again now.......
I think it may have worked!
tells me I have to restart. =) Yay!

  • Security update 2008-005 hangs during install

after the download, during install, the security update installer seems to hang after what seems like a 10% progress (still in configuring install phase).
i've tried waiting for upto 10 minutes with no luck. could someone help?

Manually download the update from Apple and update from there.

  • Security update 2011-003 cannot install

I've tried everything on multiple computer to install the Security update 2011-003. At first, it downloads, but it stalls during installation. Then I downloaded the install direct from Apple. It installed, but stalled saying it had 1 minute until completion. That lasted over an hour. I ran disk utility, then the direct install again and the same thing happened: installed until 1 minute until completion and stalls.
Anybody else with the problem and solutions?

Exactly which version of Mac OS are you on? 10.6.?
And, which model Mac do you have?
The security update is for OS 10.6.7 only. Not sure if the new 2011 iMacs need the update or not.

  • Something happened after install security update 2008-006(PPC)

    Hi there,
I have just installed the security update 2008-006(ppc) for my old powerbook, G4 1.5Mhz. Now every time when i go to network in the system preferences, i immediately got this message "Your network setting have been changed by another application" No matter how many "OK" i clicked, this message will kept appeared. I tried to restart my powerbook, but the powerbook responded that the system preferences have cancelled the restart. Can only force quit the system preferences. I can still connect to the network, just that if i go to any new places with new network setting, i will not be able to change the network setup in my powerbook.
Before i install the upgrade patch, this never happened, so i am assuming it was because of the patch. Can anyone help me? thanks.

    This seems to work also...

  • Since installing Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) ProTools won't open

    Hello,
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on my mac, and since I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) every time I try to open ProTools the ProTools icon jumps up and down a few times and then it stops, the program won't open. Are there any similar issues with this update and any other applications? I'm 100% sure the security update is what caused the problem, nothing else out of the ordinary has happened since with my mac.
    Thanks for the help.

If you still have this problem, and you're using ProTools 7.3, try this Digidesign update here:

    It worked!
