I won't claim to be an expert at reading Panic Logs, but until someone with more experience can step in, these two things caught my eye:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
jp.plentycom.driver.SteerMouse(3.9)@0xc20000->0xc27fff
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Parallels
The phrase "Kernel trap at 0x00010000, type 6=invalid opcode" suggests that something was trying to execute garbage.

  • Help needed in interpreting panic log from kernel panic error

My G4 iBook has started giving me kernel panic errors, often immediately after starting up. I haven't installed any new software or RAM recently. I've done a clean system install (completely clean - not an archive and install) then downloaded the combo update for 10.4.11. But the kernel panics are still happening from time to time. I've looked at the panic log, but it means nothing to me, so I'm hoping someone can help:

I didn't see anything that would indicate a specific problem. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Help needed to interpret kernel panic

    Hello everybody
Recently I've had a couple of kernel panics on my MacBookPro 13'' (OSX Lion 10.7.2 version, 2,26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3)
The last one occured today : I was opening Google Earth (the last version) to see the GPS position of a boat( from a link with the GPS coordinates taken from a website). Itunes and Safari were running, and also a PDF document.
The Kernel panic appears few seconds after opening Google Earth.
I also replaced memory and hard drive few weeks ago, and I just hope I didn't do something wrong.
here is the panic log :

  • Please help with a Kernel Panic Log

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my wife's kernel panic log. I have reseated her ram twice, and did the command option p +r to reset pram and she is still getting them.  I can boot in safe mode with no kp's. I definitely don't know what I am doing just reading as many posts as possible. The computer is a Macbook Pro 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo upgrade to 6gb of ram about 6mths ago.  The most recent change she has made when getting her first kp was at her new job she logged on to the wireless network and said she was getting a lot of page erros from sites. They are a PC based network, and that's all i really know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Current Flash - Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.235. Preference panes are in /Home/Library/Preference Panes/ or /Library/Preference Panes/. Also, search for SIMBL and remove all instances if you find it. Use EasyFind 4.9.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper 2.0.1
    AppDelete 3.2.6
    Automaton 1.50
    Hazel
    AppCleaner 2.1.0
    CleanApp
    iTrash 1.8.2
    Amnesia
    Uninstaller 1.15.1
    Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Could someone please help me read this panic log?

    Hi,
I have been trying to read all the past postings on reading panic logs. Most of them start of with something different, which refers to RAM. Its been almost a month now and I haven't had any problems until this evening. Here is what the log says...

I was working in Corel Painter, using a wacom tablet. Then I got a message to restart my computer. After 10 years of working on Macs, I have never experienced this. Thanks in advance to anyone that could help.

    Hi-
Your panic log pretty clearly states it's a problem with RAM:
<pre class="command">Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected.</pre>What is your memory configuration? Presumably this is your Mac Pro? If you're comfortable working inside your computer, you could swap RAM cards around.
I did a Google search for the error quoted above and came up with a couple of hits. One from February has some good information on one person's experience, resulting eventually in a logic board replacement under warranty.

Pondini: I don't run any per peripherals with my laptop. I have run a hardware test and everything is coming back clean.
~Bee: Thanks, I do run covenant eyes, and have strongly considered this to be the problem and will probably take steps to un-install the program; and then create a fresh install to see if that solves the problem. However, I was a little concerned because I didn't see reference to Covenant Eyes in the following lines of text.

Lyssa: My MacBook Pro was purchased in July of 2006; I don't know what graphics chipset I'm running off the top of my head. However, based on the code listed above I think you might be on to something. The last time I got the kernel error I was watching a movie on dvd. The commonality had seemed to be the internet, but it might just as well be graphics related.

So please, if you can, I'd very much appreciate a little help.
    Best regards.
    NB:
Some might conclude that this script does something illegal. In actuality that is not so, just make that clear. Also, testing from outside Denmark, will probably not be possible.

You know a lot more than we do: like where you then found this code, and what it is supposed to do.
My only first thought without looking through random code that allegedly serves some unknown purpose and comes from some unknown source is that the shebang is ambiguous: it may be a python 2 script while /usr/bin/python is now python 3.
I've pretty much concluded that python 3.3 is the right choice, sp that should not be a problem, as for what it does, it uses "rtmpdump" to record or "rip" video from a danish site "dr.dk", which is a public service television network.
I have it from reliable sources that this actually works, or at least did at some point, on Windows machines, but of course i'm on linux, and that complicated matters.
All in all, as I understand it, what the script really does, is retrieving the relevant rtmp link. The rest is up to "rmtpdump" which I should be able to manage.
In any case, I'm not really that concerned with learning what the script does at this point, but rather what the error mean.
The only actual error description I see is: "TypeError: 'NoneType' object is not iterable" and I haven't a clue what that implies. I've read through the script, but haven't been able to find any obvious flaws..

  • Help needed to decode error logs please

    Hi
I have been trying to work out why my MBP periodically crashes after my SL install with the black curtain thing and the requirement to restart. I have looked at my logs to try and work it out but my expertise here is minimal at best. There appears to be a file missing in my library. Does anyone know what this is and could it be causing the issue. The logs that repeats over and over every 10 seconds is copied below, I have pasted a complete cycle:
    Sep 22 06:12:45 Rob-Brays-MacBook-Pro com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent[1285]): posix_spawn("/Applications/CheckUp.app/Contents/MacOS/CheckUpAgent", ...): No such file or directory
    Sep 22 06:12:45 Rob-Brays-MacBook-Pro com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent[1285]): Exited with exit code: 1
    Sep 22 06:12:45 Rob-Brays-MacBook-Pro com.apple.launchd[1] (com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
I would appreciate some help if anyone can shed any light on it. Many thanks,
    Rob

    Cool,
app4mac.com has a product called CheckUp which looks at the health of your mac. I don't remember putting this on, but I could have done so as a free trial from a magazine some time ago. The problem is now, how do I clear all and everything to do with it and wipe it from the system?
    Thanks
    Rob

  • HELP NEEDED - 530 user cannot log in

I'm using CS5.5 and would desperately like some advice over a very odd problem.
For some reason I have a duplicate website  showing in DW. It is not on the desktop and doesn't appear in any search.
The original - Cumbria Dog Training, ha sbeen joined by Cumbria Dog Training 2.
I have no idea how this has happened.
I have been validating two items today, one a simple js item and the other is renaming an.htaccess file without the .txt
At the moment, when I try to upload anything from the original, I have the message
FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host etc.
    530 user cannot log in
What does all this mean and what can I do about it.
    Many thanks for any advice.
    Paul
btw - I also upgraded my server plan today.

    Thanks SnakEyez
You're right and I've sorted it out, to the point that I can now upload stuff.
It may sound a dumb question but how - safely - do I remove the duplicate copy, which is showing under "manage sites".
    Many thanks
    Paul

I didn't see a clue. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems? Do you have another mouse you could use?
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernel panic log help needed

After reading through the discussions, I have come to the conclusion that my computer is experiencing kernel panic. For the last two weeks it has been asking me to restart after I start up. I do- and then it seems to run ok- but very, very slowly.
So, I restarted in safeboot in order to delete any "recent or relevant" .kext files i found in system/library/extensions.
I did not find any that were recent except for itunes update.
so, i deleted the bootcache.ktext. and restarted.
upon restart, my computer was doing great until i pugged in my usb from my modem into the comptuer to connect to the internet. then got the restart screen.
then i checked the panic log and found this:
    Sun Nov 20 13:02:09 2005

i don't know what this means- but i see some "usb" letters in there and wonder if this has anything to do with the external modem that my broadband company gave me. although i've been using it for a while and this has only happened recently.
next idea, is that i have recently installed third party software. I cannot determine what was the most recent (is there a log of this?) so i can uninstall it (and how do you go about uninstalling software- just trash it?)
I have recently installed Skype software for VOIP- but i've had it for a month now and this has only happened in the last 2 weeks. I'd unistall it but do not know how.
If someone could look at that log and decipher it- that would be great.
and- honestly, i need a true step by step plan to slove the issue.
    thanks!!!

I will run the test after work today- do I just put in the installation disk or do i need to be in safe boot mode?
I think yours is a good theory- that would explain why my computer is suddenly sooo slow.
If my memory did get knocked out of place- will i have to send it in to be repaired?
But then again- how could this be connected to the USB port?
i've repaired permissions yesterday before the posting. it found lots of errors and said it repaired them. do i need to run it again until it doesn't find any?
The other thing i'm wondering is that I only have 17 days left on my warranty- Should I purchase applecare? i used to think this was ripoff but now i might be singing to a different tune.
Thanks for your help- i'll let you know how it goes this evening.

  • Panic log.....no internet...need help to fix for school!!!!!

OK...I got the "you need to restart your computer" message and ever since I restarted the computer I am not able to connect to the internet. (I have school/assignments that are due and any help would be much appreciated!!!!!) My internet service is working properly (talked to my provider to ensure all was well on their end), my router is fine & so is my modem (unplugged, restart, reboot etc.)----after searching everywhere under the sun in discussions (I am using someone elses computer while mine is sitting next to me) I found a few new options and tried them (ex. repair permissions etc.)---then came across how to find this thing called a panic log----and here it is:
    Mon Aug 31 18:23:41 2009

Evidently the 'repair permissions' worked??...because my internet is up and running again...??? Is that it?
Can somebody still take a look at my panic log...for future reference....again...any help is truly appreciated!!

  • Usb + firewire issues = kernel panic - help needed!!

Hello, and please forgive my english, I'll do my best!
So, i have a 1,25 Ghz MDD G4, with 2 x 256 Mo RAM sticks (at first), running mac OS 10.3.9.
As the original HD is too small, I work with my documents on an external firewire HD. The HD is plugged on a third party/PCI firwire card that went down.
On the same day I bought a new firewire card (trendNet, it was said to be mac compatible form mac OS 8.6) and 4 x 512 Mo of Ram (Hynix).
It worked just fine for a week and suddenly my mouse froze (and keyboard too > the mouse is plugged on the keyboard). Having no control on my mac (which seemed ok despite the usb deconnection) I had to hard reboot on the central Unit.
I unplugged the usb hub that occupied mu 2nd usb port (there was a wacom tablet and a flsh memory key on it). I left just the keyboard plugged (and mouse plugged on keyboard).
It was fine for... 2 or 3 hours and then it started again > mouse + keyboard deconnecting/freezing (the keyboard is a mac one, the mouse a microsoft one -optical-).
As the small red optical light of the mouse turns off when the mouse freezes I first thought the mouse or keyboard itself was the culprit.
I tested both of them them on a macbook and they worked just fine (never had a problem with them).
I ran disk utility, repaired the permissions. And it seemed better for a couple of hours.
When it happened again I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it on the 2nd usb port (which was free since I had unplugged everything else) > the mouse "came back to life" and I didn't have to reboot. But it happened again, like 2-3 times (every hour/half hour) until swapping the usb plug on the UC doesn't solve the problem anymore > hard reboot again...
    Then I tried EVERYTHING
booting with techtool CD > everything ok, no pb found
running onyx to empty the cash and rerepair the permissions > ibid, no pb
    resetting the PRAM with cmd-alt-p-r
    resetting the PMU
resetting the usb and firewire ports after each hard reboot
    cleaning the dust
removing my old scsi pci card (not used for ages)
moving my new firewire card on an another slot
    installing a firmware update
nothing has solved the problem... it seems to arrive randomly, but mostly (more frequently) when working with several apps open.
The cursor seems to freeze for very very short periods (as a warning!) until it freezes for good > it's exactly as if the usb didn't deliver any electricity for micro laps of time (and it is the case I guess as my optical mouse light turns off).
So I change the usb plug into the other port and it works for a while, just as if only one usb port was functional at a time, but it always ends with a hard reboot (no choice).
It's always scary but it's also very annoying as my Western Digital Mybook external drive refuses to mount on desktop after hard reboots... I have to unplug it, replug it, restart etc... well this HD is a pain but I guess it's because it's in FAT 32 (since I forgot to format it when I bought it). So I don't bother too much about the HD itself, but however it seems that the firewire card suffers from this : I have a lot of trouble mounting 2 disks at a time (but with all this I need to backup!). It's like the fiwewire ports (of the pci card) suffered from the same pain as the usb : one at the time! and when I finally mount both external HDs, if I unplug one (after unmounting it and switching it off) the computer freezes.
Then one day I opened itunes, and... kernel panic...
That was 4 days ago I think and I've had like 3-4 KP since then (one a day). These kernel panic happen just as randomly as my usb deconnexions...
Today I tried my last chance : removing the new Hynix ram and putting back my 2 old 256 rams.
It was ok for a pair of hours and then > mouse freeze and kernel panic again...
I reaaally need help, I don't know what to do anymore. I've spent my last week unplugging usb plugs, opening my UC, repairing permissions etc...
    now I feel helpless...
Here are some extracts of console logs I've had :
    some :

Is my mac dying?? Does all this come from defectible hardware? Is reinstalling a sysem a waste of time?

Hello, and please forgive my english, I'll do my best!
My complements on that. While I read the post quickly, it was only later that I saw you're in Paris....
Anyway, I'm not an expert on logs (system and panic ones), but from what I can tell there is a problem with the PCI USB/Firewire card you installed. It looks like it's the USB portion of the card; those are happing at startup when I'm pretty sure there's a kind of initial checking of the PCI cards.

The panics show dependencies to USB and FW:

    com.apple.driver.AppleUSBHub(2.1.5)@0x539000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.1.5)@0x471000
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.AppleFWOHCI(2.2.10)@0x708000

    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily(1.8.8)@0x407000
The problems with the card at startup are probably creating an unstable condition, which in turn is causing kernel panics later on.
Basic things first, whenever you change the hardware setup, e.g. RAM and adding cards, it's a really good idea to reset-PRAM. Did you do that? Try that first, it's simple and easy enough to try.
If resetting the PRAM doesn't help, then try the new PCI card. I re-read your post a few times, but I haven't seen whether you tried removing the PCI FW/USB card to see if that helps. Try your mouse and some other devises on the native USB and FW ports. If you're stable, then it very well could be the card.
Of course there's also the question of the RAM, which you pulled without help. Again, after any change of the hardware (adding RAM, pulling RAM, adding/pulling cards, etc.) even during testing, reset the PRAM at startup.
With new RAM it's usually a good idea to test it, with say AHT CD or Rember. If you test, you might want to do this without the new card. It's a little tricky right now because you added 2 new pieces of HW (RAM and FW/USB card) either which or both could cause the problems you're seeing. OS X is picky about RAM, and the MDDs in particular are extremely picky about RAM as far as Apple HW is concerned.
Lots of kernel panics can eventually cause damage to the OS X installation. So in the end, it may be worth re-installing. But, before you take that route. Try the simple things like removing the PCI FW/USB card & testing, and testing the RAM. Take it one step at a time.

  • Interpreting my iMac Kernel Panic Log

    Hello, I recently purchased a new iMac (mid 2010) Q core i7 OSX10.6.8
I got two kernel panic in three days. I have on HD Cinema display connected and wacom tablet and a couple of hard drives. I also upgraded my RAM.  Below is my kernel panic log which is way to complex for me to interpret. I will appreciate all help with interpreting what it says and what maybe be my issue.
    Thanks!

I suspect one of two things, either com.aladdin.kext.aksfridge is causing it, I did a quick search and found this to be some type of MS Windows applicaiton. The next thing was at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch which should be OK unless you are running a very old version.
I'd recommend unistalling the Aladdin software first per the manufacturers instructions, restarting in Safe Mode to clear some caches then restarting normally and finally test.  If that does not do it then do the same with Little Snitch.
