Help needed with Snow Leopard/Lion partitions

I'm still using Snow Leopard but will be installing Lion soon. First I want to make sure I don't lose the few Rosetta/PPC apps that I still need.
I've read several threads about partitioning to create a dual boot for both Lion and SL.
What I want to do is this, and I'd appreciate a bit of help/guidance:-
I have two external FW HDs, daisychained. Both of them have two partitions.
External Drive A (500Gb) has one major partition (let's call it (1) ) that I want to leave for backing up everything, which I already do using CarbonCopyCloner. (I don't use Time Machine).
The other partition (2) is for specific files. When I get round to installing Lion, I will continue to backup on this HD, so the old PPC apps on it presumably won't work.
External Drive B (300 Gb) has one partition (3) that I use for backing up music files, and it won't matter what, if anything, Lion changes in them.
The other partition (4) on this drive is free and has about 30 Gb free. What I want to do is use my Snow Leopard Install disc and install SL onto this partition (4), including Rosetta, make it bootable and then add the few PPC apps that I need into it.
AFTER all that, I'm going to Install Lion onto my iMac (with the extarnals unplugged).
So in theory, I can boot either into the iMac drive itself for Lion, or partition (4) for Snow Leopard.
Questions-
Does this look like it'll work?
Does it matter that I haven't installed Lion before creating the SL Boot in (4)? Seems that several people have had problems installing Lion BEFORE trying to rescue PPC apps.
When backing up my music files from a Lion environment to (3), does it matter that the drive shares a SL partition (4)?

10.6 Ships with Symbol.ttf rather than Symbol.dfont. It's in /System/Library/Fonts/
If you absolutely need the .dfont you could pull it off an old system. I have one handy and can sent you a link, but the ttf is probably better to use. See attached for version difference between ttf, dfont and the windows SYMBOL.TTF.
The new one has ~30 more characters added to it and matches the windows version.

  • Help Needed with issues of Lion OS...

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13" manufactured in August 2011 with Snow Leopard OS. Since I have started using it, I have noticed some funny problems. Hope someone will be able to help me out with this:
    * In my Finder Preferences, I have set the option of "New Finder window opens in" to open in a folder I have created called Work. However, every time I restart the machine and I open my finder window with the shortcut Apple + N , it keeps opening the window to the folder marked All Files. Even after continuously changing the preference back to the Work folder, this problem keeps persisting. Any suggestions on what I could try?...
    * Very often while watching a movie or listening to music, I have found that the keyboard volume controls do not work. It gets sttuck on the highest volume and I get a sign showin a circle with a forward slash in it indicating that this function cannot be used. This gets rectified only after restarting the machine, but this is hapenning time and time again, and is getting really annoying...
    * Lots of times, my folders keep opening in a new window, even though I have unticked the option of opening folders in new windows. Any idea of why this is hapenning and any solutions?...
    * Also, I need to sort pictures in certain folders according to type, in order to mass-select pictures. But this just does not happen. Please do let me know...

You'll have to go to beta labs. Here's the link.

However, some people are having issues with its, since after all, it is a beta application. Furthermore, the N86 is technically not in the supported list. Some people are finding certain issues, while some do not.

  • Printers: Samsung ML 1670 with Snow Leopard & Lion

    HI all,
For the past 3 years I've been using a HP 1022 mono laser printer on my iMac. Great printer, worked perfectly. I decide to upgrade to Snow Leopard and now its useless; memory full, prints odd # pages.
Despite all the advice I've seen on the web nothing has resolved it. Update drivers, add printer etc etc.
I am now looking at getting another printer, Samsung ML1670, a budget one for my needs and Samsung say it compatible with OSX 10.6
Anybody had any good or bad experiences with this and SL?
And just out of curiosity anyone know if it works on Lion as I would like to update my MacBook too.
    Many thanks,
    Steve.

Well, the ML-1670 is supposed to work on Snow Leopard and Lion, drivers indicated here for OS X 10.3 ~ 10.7
    http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/print-solutions/print-solutions/mono-printers /ML-1670/XEU-support?
Samsung used to be Mac UNfriendly but that seems to have changed with the more recent models.
I use a ML-1610 which officially is not Mac compatible but did get it to work somehow on 10.6 and 10.7

  • Help needed with delete of bootcamp partition, error message 'Couldn't unmount disk'

    Hello all
Sorry if this issue has been repeated elsewhere, I did search but there wasn't a discussion relating to my specific issue.
When we bought the iMac a couple of years ago, my husband partitioned the hard drive to run Windows via Bootcamp. Having got used to the Mac and experiencing the frustration between having to reboot to access each partition I have decided to restore the Mac to factory settings and install Parallels 8 so I can continue to use Office and Coreldraw).
So having backed up all of my files, I started the Mac up holding the 'Alt' key and then loaded the Recovery HD mode followed by Disk Utility. I then selected Bootcamp and erased all data from the partition. [Note: there are 2 files left which it won't allow me to erase through this method]
I then selected the main drive and the tab 'Partition', from the layout I then selected Bootcamp and clicked the minus button. I get the message confirming which partition I am about to delete and hit remove. I then get the error message 'Partition failed: couldn't unmount disk'.
I would be very grateful for some help please? I am not the best techy person but happy to give anything a go.
Just to mention there is nothing left on the Mac that I want to keep, therefore if there is an easier way than having to delete the partition then happy to hear it.
    Thanks
    Tara

I have a MacBook White, early 2009 model, just downloaded/installed OS X Lion.  Everything worked well with Snow Leopard - Mathematica, pogo.com games. I would just chalk it up to slow hardware but they load real quick in windows 7 and once this bad spot is loaded the program runs so fast and nice afterword. Maybe some tweeks? I wonder if this would happen in Snow?
The coment "few outdated programs" Ive seen alot its not just a few its a lot and since games are not Apple's strong point I would think they would want to keep as many as they could...
An example of the rants you will see from a lot here. Don't be put off as these problems are generally user specific, and these same old comments come out after the release of every OSX I can remember. When Lion is upgraded  to the next OSX you can gaurentee these forums will be full of people screaming about how great Lion was. Happened with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
So come to think of it you may be better off Googling sites that give you unbiased views on Lion, rather than expect any positive comments here. For every one complaint there are probably 100,000 people with no issues.

According to Roaring Apps, there is a version of Protools compatible with Lion.  But you may need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to buy either Lion or ML on MAS.   It looks like you need to get up-to-date with your OS and the apps too.

  • Mac Pro will not boot with Snow Leopard - need help!

I have had a lot of issues with Snow Leopard since I upgraded from 10.5.8. Most of my problems started after installing Office 2007. I finally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. No problems until last week. Start up was taking longer and had to reboot a couple of times because of grey screen. So I would just put computer to sleep. Yesterday the computer was frozen on screen saver with scrambled rows of pixels on screen two and the main monitor had a frozen image.
I initially pulled all peripherals out and pulled the power plug for 5 minutes. I have left the peripherals out and pulled the second monitor as well. I tried pulling the power plug during a few more starts but nothing gets me to a complete start up screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM and VRAM and tried a safe boot. I tried booting from Snow Leopard and my Leopard disk stayed on either a blue or gray screen with spinning beach ball (on gray screen).
Put original install disk in and booted from using D to check the hardware. Good news is that the hardware test was OK. I did the extended test.
All different kind of start up problems.
    - Some start with start up sound goes to Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with beachball
    - Some start ups with no initial sound then Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with no cursor or beachball
    - Some start ups with no sound to gray screen to blue screen to grey screen.
I have no problem wiping the HD1 again but I can't even get the OS disk to be recognized with holding the C key during start up. This last time it went to a blue screen (holding the C key) and a cursor.
I don't know what else to do - Please help!!!

There are lists (MacIntouch and MacFixit) of hardware / software support issues with 10.6. Accelerateyourmac is another place to watch.
There were some really long threads back in Sept about printer driver support.
The 7300 firmware was more about Windows support; those cards are failing and dropping like flies (how DO they know 3 yrs has expired anyway?) and they don't support SL features like OpenCL etc so I'd invest in ATI 4870, best graphic card and works in all models Mac Pro.
Lots and lots of bootable clones for backup. Never need to wipe and install again.

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

  • Need help with Snow Leopard compatibility issue

We have a new iMac in (with Snow Leopard) and have loaded all our programs. Due to budgets, we have not made the jump to CS4 and are still on CS3 (waiting for 5). We work in an InDesign/InCopy workflow.
In launching InDesign on the MAc with Snow Leopard, we have noticed that the assignment folders are nonexistant and within the program you can't even open an assignment window. When you reopen on a system without Snow Leopard, the individual assignments are there, but the program states it can't find the main assignment, so it's cancelling out the assignments if opened on the Snow Leopard unit.
Does anyone have any info on compatibility issues with Indesign CS3 and Snow Leopard? My tech guy found nothing on this before we ordered the new system.

First things first. CS5 was announced today and preorders are being accepted.
I believe if you upgrade to CS4 you'll get a free copy of CS5. This is important because if you're upgrading a suite, tiered pricing makes CS3 to CS4 $200 less than waiting til CS5 comes out.
That out of the way, is everyone fully patched to CS3 5.0.4? Is Snow Leopard fully updated to 10.6.3? Do you have full read/write permission on the server?

  • Can't install snow leopard on partition after upgrading to lion

I rushed out too early to install Lion via Apple Apps store.  Now, I realize that Rosetta is gone and so are my options to use older apps.  As I was reading on the web and Apple Support, I have tried various things and get a window saying that I can't install snow leopard.
I have never partition my hard drive, but using disk utility I created a partition called "Snow Leopard."  It divided my HD in half which is okay.  I closed the disk utility window, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and saw the OS X Install DVD.  When I select it a window pops up saying, "You can't use this version of the appl inst Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.  You have installed Mac OS X 23.1.1."
Before downloading lion, I made a backup of my existing HD using Time Machine to an external HD.  When I open up a saved version dated a month ago, I see that the applications that were working in snow leopard now have the icon circle saying that it is not supported by lion.  This is strange since I used Time Machine to back up my HD, then turned off the app before downloading lion.  Even older versions saved on the external HD show the circle.
I read about lion and the "Recovery HD," but when I hold down the Command-R key nothing happens when I restart my computer.  It also talks about using the option key but that does not work.  It talks about reinstalling lion using this system, but I don't see it working.
How can I install snow leopard on my new partition, then I would go to "Software Updates," to get the latest version, or use one of the versions on my external HD to have both operating system.
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

    Hi Scottiemn,
As I was trying different things to make a partition on my HD, I made notes as to what I did, and I finally got it to work.  I will try to explain what I did.
Before installing “Lion,” I backed up Snow Leopard using Time Machine to my external Seagate HD.  I installed “Lion,” and found out that I could not use some of my old apps, so I did the following.
Since I am running “Lion,” I opened up disk utility and selected my MacHD (1TB), then I selected partition, and it showed “Macintosh HD” under the partition information name.  I believe I selected the plus, + and it divided my HD space in half, and I named it Snow Leopard.
I then installed the Snow Leopard DVD, and restarted my computer holding down the “C” key, I held it down for about 30 seconds or more and then took my finger off of the key.  As I waited I finally saw that I was on the install DVD, and on the top menu bar I saw “Utilities.”  I had my external Seagate HD mounted on my desk top before I restarted my computer, I selected the “Utilities,” on the menu bar and it gave me the option to back up from Time Machine, I selected my external Seagate HD to the newly created partition I named Snow Leopard and I said “Yes.”  I followed the instructions and after it was done, I went to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with Snow Leopard.  On my desktop, I can see two Hard Drives, one is Macintosh HD with “Lion,” and the other is Snow Leopard.
Then, I started up my computer and I was on the Snow Leopard partition and I saw all of my apps working.  I then went back to the menu bar and selected System Preferences, System, Startup Disk, and selected to start up with “Lion,” and restarted my computer and I was running “Lion.”
I am not sure why I was not able to use the DVD of SL before, but somehow I got it to work, and I hope that I have explained what I did above.
One thing, when I installed “Lion,” from the app store, I did not make a bootable DVD of the application.  I went back to the app store and downloaded “Lion” again and kept it in the dock until I got Snow Leopard to work.  I burned a DVD of “Lion,” and so I have a backup of it.
Since my Seagate HD has only 250 GB of space and it is an EIDE HD 7,200 rpm using an OWC Mercury Elite FW400/USB2 with the Oxford chipset 911 enclosure which I bought in 2008, I decided that since I now have my 27 inch iMac quad core i5 with 1TB that I needed a larger hard drive.
I researched the web and decided to go back to OWC and just bought a 2.0TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro “Quad Interface” 64MB with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2.0 with 7,200 rpm speed for $219.00.  I partitioned it for Time Machine, and Carbon Copy Cloner.
I ran Time Machine, and both partitions “Lion, and Snow Leopard” are on the Time Machine partition and both HD’s are under the Carbon Copy Cloner.
I am self taught on my many iMac’s over the years, and I go to the forums to ask questions and follow the helpful hints to resolve my problems.  I carefully try different things and write down what I did so I don’t repeat things.
I hope that I have explained what I did, and hopefully it will work for you.
When I want to run SL, I select in the System Preferences to start up from that disk, when I want to run Lion, I go back and select that and start up my computer running Lion.
Since I have many old apps that Rosetta uses to open them up in SL I wanted to keep that operating system.  I will go back now that I have everything working and see if I really need them.  I won’t rush to remove my SL partition that I created, but in time if I don’t need the older apps then I may clean out my system and just run Lion.
I run Lion now all of the time, but when I need to go back to SL, I now have the option.
    Good Luck,
    DaisyMay

  • Format/Reinstall Mountain Lion with Snow Leopard DVD

I began having problems with software freezing up this morning out of nowhere and decided to do a disk verify on the Macintosh HD partition using Disk Utility. Once it completed it stated I needed to restart holding CMD+R to enter Disk Utility outside of OSX (I guess) to repair some problems that showed up. After doing that, I recieved a message stating that it could not repair the disk, to backup as much as possible, reformat, and reinstall OSX.
I have been using time machine to back up that partition since the beginning. Backups should not be a problem.
    So here are my questions:
#1 - Do I only need to select the "Macintosh HD" partition in disk utility and hit reformat?
Will it even allow me to do that within OSX?
And will it guide me through the process to reinstall OSX?
#2 - When I purchased the iMac it came with Snow Leopard, but have since upgraded to Lion, then Mountain Lion.
If I reinstall using the DVD that came with the iMac, will I lose Mountain Lion?
Or is that attached to my user ID or my Time Machine when I restore?
#3 - I use iTunes - A LOT - Am I going to lose the iTunes database (all my plays, dates, ratings etc...) after reinstalling or will those be safe on my restore from my Time Machine?
I have googled reformatting iMac and read several guides but all this "GUID" stuff is above my head. I just want a clean system like it was when I got it. I use external drives for most of my main storage other than itunes music, which is backed up but remains on the internal drive.
Thank you so much for any help you may be able to give me ahead of time!

    #1 should allow that.
#2, no need to reinstall 10.6...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Or restore from the TM backup once the Drive is fixed.
#3, If the TM backup is good you should be fine.

Hello, is there any way of having a reboot disk for lion that I'm downloading, like the one I have with snow leopard ?

Once the Lion download is complete quit the installer and follow these directions. The file you need to make a boot disk disappears after you install Lion.

However, the Lion installation includes a recovery partition. It won't be of help if your entire HD dies but is very handy otherwise. This Knowledge Base article has a lot of good information about Lion's recovery partition.
