I am transfering itunes to a new computer with an external drive.  All the music shows up in itunes on both computers, but 3/4 of the songs now won't play on either.  It says the original file cannot be found?  asks if I want to search for it?  For each of about 12,000 songs?  Reconsolidating the library does not fix it.  Both computers PC.  old windows Vista, new windows 7.

I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs using the new computer, there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out" during play back, similar to a small scratch on a vinyl record.  Although when I play the same song over again, the "miss" occurs in a different location during the song.  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

You don't say which version of iTunes you are using, but the symptoms you describe have been encountered by some users with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1.
There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • I originally bought an iMac 17 which crashed. Have now bought a second-hand iMac20. This has less preinstalled software, no iDVD, no iPhoto, Garageband, no iWeb.  Can I use my original discs to restore these options to my new computer? Problems with this?

You might be able to depending on the age of the disc and the model of your newer used iMac. Only way to tell is to pop in the DVD and see if you can install the iLife programs.

  • Will 1st gen ipod touch still work with new itunes library on new computer (transfer didn't work from old computer)

Ok, so I have a new computer and wanted to transfer my itunes library from my old computer. I could not get the files to transfer. I downloaded the newest version of itunes and see that I can download my previously purchased music to the new computer. I have mp3's that I can add in on my own so I don't have a problem starting over in itunes.
My question is what happens when I plug in my 1st gen ipod touch and try to sync??? Will it erase what is on my ipod or will I be able to move the stuff from my ipod into my new itunes library?? Any info would be great...I'm happy with how my ipod is set up so I really don't want to mess with a good thing. Also, will I need to update and of my software on my ipod since it's 1st generation??
    Thanks for the help!!

You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
    To avoid that see:

Yes, the 1G works with the latest iTunes.

In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • New computer transfer

I used the Apple recommended method to transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to the new..and now, every single one of my songs has an exclamation point next to it. All of the songs were mine and legally obtained from CDs or the iTunes music store. Can anyone offer some help? Thank you.

I have the same problem you had with the exclamation points after tranfering my songs to my new computer. I used a travel drive as I was directed. It's driving me crazy! I've tried various things only to have some songs turn okay; but then other ones that were okay, got the It's too bad that Apple isn't more helpful with the situation because I can see that I am not the only one with the problem. Please HELP me!!! I haven't been able to plug my ipod to my computer because I don't want it to absorb the problems. It sure would be nice to add songs to it, but it's too risky right now.

  • Itunes library won't load to ipod mini after ipod to new computer transfer

I got a new computer and was able to transfer my ipod music into itunes; however, now my ipod has gone blank and it will not load the songs from itunes back onto the ipod. The ipod shows up on itunes, but has no songs listed. It shows that it is empty with a lock next to it on the bottom of the itunes screen.
    Please help!

As you have all of your songs safely back in iTunes then try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt you to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings

  • New Computer Transfer Difficulty

I am trying to transfer all of my music from my nano to a new computer/library. (including songs not purchased through itunes) My last computer crashed, and required a whole new operating system - so I cannot go back to burn the files. Is there any way of getting my songs off of the nano and into a new library that includes new itunes songs I have purchased? Everytime I try, itunes wants to erase my ipod.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of these here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

For more on the new function in iTunes 7 a paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
When your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • New computer, syncing problems with itunes

    Hi there.
It's not really a new computer I just couldn't put the whole problem up in the header and it might as well be as I've had to erase the hard drive, reinstall leopard and start all over again. obviously my phone thinks that of course it is synced with another itunes library (which doesn't exist). (I'm hesitant o sync it with the computer in anyway as it may erase all of the applications that I have acquired and bought in recent months. Is there anything I can do about this?
    Thanks

The iTunes store still sees this as the same computer with the same MAC address, unless you changed your Ethernet card or other hardware. I guess you didn't backup your iTunes library...
    1. Reauthourize your computer in iTunes.
    2. Disable automatic syncing on connection of your phone.
    3. Connect your phone to iTunes
    4. Right-click your device, and select "Transfer Purchases" - this will transfer all iTunes purchased media and apps from your phone to iTunes.

  • New Computer, BIG Problems

I just bought a new computer. Loaded my iPod, loaded iTunes, and it won't work! Unexpected error occurs. I've tried every help I can find on the support page, including uninstall, deleting of folders, etc. Nothing seems to work.

  • From old to new computer : synch problems

    Hello,
I have a problem with my ipod/itunes. Here is my story.
I have bought an Ipod Touch 3 (32 GB) two months ago. I have installed itunes on my computer (running XP) and used it to synchronize my ipod (though I use manual sync for music & video).
My computer is now dead (motherboard and disk, how lucky I am), I have setup a new one (running Seven) and installed itunes. The problem is now : how can I tell my ipod touch that this new computer is "its" computer ? When I click on "synchronize the apps" (as it was on my previous one), itunes warns me that it will erase my applications and application data with the library content. I have some important data in my touch (and applications downloaded from AppStore on it) and I don't want to loose something.
So, what can I do to proceed to a clean migration between my old and new computer ? If I start from a empty library, will my ipod be emptied ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
    MD

Soooo...the dirty hack has not worked (itunes is said as "damaged").
I have tried something else and guess what : it worked. I tell here what I did, but I don't guarantee it will work for other users (so if you try it, it is at your own risk !).
    1) Full desinstall of itunes (including system directories related to it and librairy)
    2) Normal installation and first run. The new library is created
    3) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.xml and replace the unique library identifier by the one of the backuped itunesmusiclibrary.xml (don't forget to note the replaced identifier before replacing it)
    4) Edit itunesmusiclibrary.itl with an hexadecimal editor (I used ultraedit), search the old identifier and replace it with the new one.
    5) Launch itunes normally
    6) Plug the ipod touch : itunes should say that there is data on the ipod that is not in the library and ask if you want to put them (otherwise they will be removed). Choose yes
    7) Take a cup of coffee/tea/chocolate/whatever you want : the ipod will be backuped and the applications will be in the library.
Now, the ipod touch is synchronized again with itunes for applications. Movies and music are not, but it is normal.
I have not tested agenda/contacts, as I don't use them.

  • New Computer - transfer of songs - now songs are not updating or being foun

    Hello,
I transferred my itunes library to a new computer. I lost quite a few songs and now itunes can't find my songs on the computer. They appear in my library but when I click on them to play itunes can't find them. I have checked to see if they are in the correct folder and they are. What do I do? I followed all of the directions on the apple site. Backed up my songs on my ipod. Tried this 3 times. I have spent many hours trying to fix. I am quite frustrated. Please help!

Are you sure you can play all the songs on your computer still! None of the songs have excitement marks next to them?

  • HT4913 New computer authorization problem

I have 3 authorized computers with my Apple ID.  Want to authorize a new computer for iTunes Match but when I click "authorize" and then sign into my itunes account, I get a new warning saying, "You cannot authorize more than 5 computers...".  Checked my account, and confirmed that I only have 3 authorized devices.  Have logged out, waited for next day, and tried to authorized again the new computer and still gives me the same problem that I already have 5 devices authorized!!!
    Any insights?
    Thanks

    hi Shelsta!
your issue is beyond my competence to fix ... but i did some asking around on your problem. it's plausible that you might have accidentally ended up creating two different ITMS accounts.
whatever the underlying cause of the problem, it's worth emailing ITMS Customer Support and outlining your situation to them. there's a contact form at the bottom of this FAQ:

  • New Computer, Major Problems

Hello. I got a new computer, but I retained my old hard drive and got a new one. I reinstalled iTunes, and imported all the songs from my old hd to my new hd. Then I plugged in my iPod and it said that it could not transfer any of the songs/tv shows that i bought on my old computer. What do I do?

In the iTunes "STORE" menu you need to authorize your new computer.
