Help - New iMac, Time Machine backup issue

Hello everybody,
I am a happy camper with my brand new 27" iMac, however... I have a problem with system migration. Here is the issue:
- On my Time Machine, I have backups of my old iMac and my MacBook Air
- When I tried Migration Assistant to reinstall my old iMac contents on my new iMac, no backups were found
- Then, when I disbaled the Time Machine on my MacBook Air, I could see the MacBook Air backup in the Migration Assistant.
So, my conclusion was: I need to disable the Time Machine on my old iMac too! However - that one is BROKEN.
How do I proceed??? Migration Assitant keeps telling me that not all copies can be restored because some systems still seem to be mounted... or something similar.
How do I make my Time Machine forget about the old iMac? Yes, I can see the Time Capsule in the finder, I can even see the contents of my old iMac backups, but Migration Assitant won't eat them...
Your tips are much appreciated.
Maccer.

Thanks Toad, I did that. Unfortunately I could not find an anwer to my problem there. All I can do now is retrieve individual files, which is a hassle. I want full system restore, including all my files, email etc.
The Time Machine keeps telling me that "another system is mounted" and that "not all copies can be restored".
Since I can SEE the full backup file, I cannot imagine it is hard to use that file for Migration Assistant.

Is it possible to downgrade to mountain lion with the help of a time machine backup after having updated to Mavericks?

Just to be clear, if by downgrade you mean uninstall, then the answer is technically, no.
You can't uninstall an OS. You can erase and re-install the old OS, but if you don't have a prior backup of your data, you'll lose it during the erase procedure.

• Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue

Hi,
I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.
Thanks,
brokenboy

You can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts.

• Restore iMac Time Machine Backup to Mac Mini

I've struggled to find a discussion that covers what I'm trying to do. I have a Time Machine backup from a G5 iMac that was stolen, not exactly certain which model. A friend of mine has lent me a Mac Mini to use but unfortunately when he tried to wipe his data from it, he didn't do a great job and wiped the machine entirely. It needs a FULL fresh install as it won't boot on it's own, however it won't allow me to restore from the iMac's Time Machine backup as it states it was 'created on a different machine'. The Mac Mini is the MB138LL/A model. I obviously don't have the original machine's installer disks to use so am a bit stumped. Thanks in advance for any help!

Order replacement discs from Apple customer service, if applicable, or buy a retail disc if the original OS was upgraded. Install, then import the data from Time Machine in Setup Assistant.

• Help with iTunes Time Machine backups

I just got a MBP for Christmas to replace the 2 MacBooks I had previously (which both died within weeks of each other).
I have 2 time Machine Backups on a Time Capsule and have used one to get this MBP up and running.
I want to get the iTunes data from the other backup and add it into this one as it has stuff that this one doesnt......any idea how I go about it?

Hi Drukenhard!
I would suggest that you first make a copy of the source music files for your iTunes Library, either on an external hard drive or just in another location on your internal hard drive, by following this article:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
You will then want to restore the information from the backup that you wish to pull the iTunes Library information from by using this article:
OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14111
Then you can import the iTunes Library source files that you copied earlier by using this article, effectively merging your libraries:
iTunes: About the Add to Library, Import, and Convert functions
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1347
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

• Time Machine Backup Issue

Acting on the advice of the folks at our local Genius Bar, I purchased an external Lacie drive at the Apple store a few weeks back. I needed the space b/c the info. on my iMac exceeded the capacity of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.
Things have been going well until today when I received an error message stating that "Time Machine can't complete the backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
Any help is appreciated.

• Time Machine backup disappears when iMac sleeps

Tried finding this topic but could not find the specifics. I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.7 and I use a Mercury enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA for Time Machine backup, connected with FireWire. Every time my Mac goes to sleep overnight, the next morning, the Time Machine icon disappears from the desktop. It's been disconnected, because when I run Check Time Machine, the log reads thusly:
<<Thu Apr 21 10:29:30 com.apple.backupd-auto Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
Thu Apr 21 12:30:05 [0x0-0x2d22d2].backupd-helper Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume
>>
Occasionally I'll get the error message on the Mac that a device has been "improperly disconnected" but most of the time when it sleeps the TM drive icon just goes away (even tho the backup drive is still on).
Any ideas? Can I fix this or have to live with it? Are there alternatives to TM that may work better?
Thanks for any help/suggestions.
Best,
Mike

I had the same problem as Bru-Hed, but with a Samsung G3 Station 1 TB with USB-connection. After waking up the MAC the message "improperly disconnected" appeared. Was happy with the solution you gave and changed the power save settings accordingly, the drive holds its power, but....... things did not change. Switching off the MAC and restarting gives no problems with the back-up drive, but after waking up I have to reinstall the back-up drive every time by disconnecting and connecting the USB-connector. After choosing the drive again in Time Machine, everything works properly until the next time the MAC goes asleep......
Any other solution to this problem ?

• Transferring Time Machine backup from old to new Time Capsule

After transferring my old Time Machine backup from a 5 year old Time Capsule to a new Airport Time Capsule, my MacBook Air wants to start a new full Time Machine backup to the new TC. I was under the impression that the Time Machine backups would pick up where they left off. Was I mistaken? Is the backup supposed to begin anew even if you've transferred an old backup?
Also, if it must begin from scratch, how would I access the old TM backups if I needed to restore a file from the old backup?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

How far did you go? By that I mean did you allow the MBA to actually start the backup.
It can be very simple thing.. I have done it lots of times in my repairs to Time Capsules.. if I move a sparsebundle to another location, TM will not even check for the old sparsebundle until it start running.
So the operation is as follows..
Move the sparsebundle.
There is an Apple document as well as what Pondini produced.
Transfer TM backups..
Apple doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5097
Pondini doco http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
As long as you are talking network backups it doesn't much matter. The same rules apply to moving the sparsebundle.
When you reset TM to the new location of the backup.. it will always tell you it will begin a new backup..
As long as you did not change the computer name.. or install a new OS or upgrade.. only when the backup actually starts will it look for existing sparsebundles.. find it.. and begin from where it left off.
So you simply have to start. Wait for TM to figure out there is an existing sparsebundle with the correct name.. and start what will often be a deep scan of the existing sparsebundle. So it can take a long time.. and we do still recommend doing this first one by ethernet.. albeit on an Air that does mean buying the thunderbolt to ethernet dongle.
As a general principle I generally recommend people do start a new backup. Archive the old one.. it is easy to access old backups.. Again see pondini FAQ.. 14-17 on all the neato things you can do.

• HT4848 Restoring a Time Machine backup with ML OSX over a new Hard Disk

I have MacBook Pro that I had to replace the Hard Drive with a new one and it came installed with a copy of SnowLeopard OSX. Now I want to restore all my data and settings using Time Machine backup but this was made on my previous hard drive that used Mountain Lion OSX
I don't know if I have to upgrade from Snow Leopard to ML from the App Store before doing the restore or Time Machine takes care of this when I proceed with the restore task?
I will appreciate any assistance to avoid any mess
Thanks for your help.

If the time machine backup is of mountain lion, you can boot holding the option key and select the time machine drive. Then select restore from time machine backup there. No need to install any OS first.

• Time Machine backups have become very slow

My time machine backups to a USB attached external drive (dedicated to backups) have recently slowed horribly. They are taking timeframes like 30 minutes to even an hour even when nothing has changed on my system. They didn’t do that previously (usually just a couple of minutes for same).
Console ouput below. I see MDS errors. What are those? Are they a concern?
I have run Disk Utility on both my hard drive and the time machine drive and they look okay.

• Error-1 time machine backups after lion upgrade

I upgraded to Lion on both my computers. My iMac Time Machine Backups are fine - it's connected by firewire to an external hard drive.
BUT my Macbook Tim Machine Backups are wireless using our Time Capsule and the backups are stored on the Time Capsule.
Since upgrading, The backups fail & I get this error: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Brunnertime/LittleOne (2).sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Just like so many other unhappy Lion users.
One positive abberation - Last night, I went into Time Machine Preferences, re-selected the appropriate backup disk (our Time Capsule), entered the password, started a backup and VOILA it backed up fine. All night long, it did hourly backups.
This morning? Once again, the backups are FAILING with that same error - The backup disk image “/Volumes/Brunnertime/LittleOne (2).sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Plus, now there are NO backups on the disk. Huh?
At this point we are disgusted that both Lion and iCloud (that's another longer story) were released before they should have been. Too many bugs.

Hey, finally I found a permanent fix for this issue. I read about it at another Apple Discussions Forum, but right now I don't remember where.
It worked for me at least. In my case it seems that some Western Digital (WD) software was causing the issue. I just uninstalled WDSmartWare from my iMac using that application's own uninstaller, rebooted my Mac and, finally, after months of calling Apple Support with no luck, it all started to work normally again, so check if you have some WD software running on your Mac. In my case I didn't even need that WD software, as I had it because I used to back up to a WD Drive which I don't use anymore since I bought my Time Capsule.
Feel free to reply if you require any further assistance.
Good Luck.

• Deleting duplicates in iPhoto - Effects on Time Machine Backup

I am new to Time Machine Backup. I have a query, (perhaps a silly one?)
Out of 4500 photos in my iPhoto, I have trashed 300 duplicates.
On my next backup in Time Machine on an Ext HD, will the deleted photos be also gone?
What about the duplicates that I originally stored in my Hard Drive under My Pictures? Are they also stand deleted?

Hi blissalvacion,
Time Machine takes exact copies of your HD at the time the backup occurs. Here's an example:
05/05/10 @ 10:00am - 3500 photos
05/05/10 @ 11:00am - 3300 photos
So at some point in that hour block, you deleted 200 photos. All of sudden at 11:15am National Geographic calls and wants to pay you $1,000,000 for those 200 photos. If you click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar at the top and select "Enter Time Machine" you can then view your HD as it looked at 10:00am and restore those deleted 200 photos.
The catch, unfortunately, is that with iPhoto the iPhoto Library is a container file (it's really a folder just doesn't look like one). So if the photos were deleted from within iPhoto you'd need to restore the entire iPhoto Library to how it looked at 10:00am. Based on the size of your iPhoto Library, the restore might take a little while.

• Errors when transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive.

Hello,
I need some help transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive. Let me explain what happened.
I have a Mac OSX Mountain Lion that was upgraded to Mavericks when the upgrade came out. Prior to upgrading, I've been backing up WD Passport Mac with the proprietary software "WD Unlocker on it". It worked flawlessly but after upgrading to Mavericks, I decided to backup and noticed that once i inserted the WD Passport, my screen will flicker, windows will close and reappear.
I decided to read up on this and discovered that Mavericks is not compatible with the "WD Unlocker " program on the Passport drive. Since I already have a backup in place, i decided to restore my computer to factory settings and when I attached the Passport drive with my backup on it, My device will see the backup but it will keep spinning for hours without restoring my backup. I decided to read further on this and I got the same Mavericks compatibility conclusion.
I then copied my entire backups.backupdb folder to my Mac desktop and formatted my WD Passport external drive and got rid of the proprietary software "WD Unlocker".. Once this was completed, I then tried to copy my backups.backupdb folder to my external drive within finder. Each time i tried, i get error messages and permission messages. Even when i changed the permission on the backups.backupdb folder to read & write for everyone, i still get the permissions error.
Please helppppp. I have over 500gb of vital data in my backup.
Thank you.

Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.
