Help - new ISP with my WRT54G
I just had Mediacom set up my cable internet today. It works fine going from the supplied modem to the computer, but when i hook it up to my wireless router, i'm not having any luck. It may work for a few minutes, but eventually it quits. I've heard linksys has problems when a ps3 is involved. I've went through the linksys EasyLink Advisor numerous times, and it always tells me something different. Router not detected, no internet connection, and it's even said my router isn't compatible.
Cliff notes:
- just moved, new ISP
- wireless internet won't work for more then a minute or two
- want to run a laptop, desktop, and ps3 on it
- need some kind of help!
- worked ok on cable internet provider i had previously(ps3 mess it up occasionally)
Anyone have any quick fixes? I've tried resetting it, no luck, unplugging modem and router, no luck. EasyLink, no luck. please please tell me
You should upgrade the firmware of your Linksys router...
Download the router's firmware from here , firmware should be downloaded on your desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful" After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
As your Internet Service Providor is Cable you should follow the link here ,
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1

For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

HELP: New S30 with numerous problems
I received a new S30 (4352CTO) yesterday and am having some difficulties. First, it's not even listed when I attempt to find documentation, etc. on the Lenovo site. (Can find 4352 but no CTO). Second I have 12 (!!!) Base System Devices listed in Device Manager with no driver. All of these appear to be Intel devices (from the vendor number displayed in device instance path). Windows Update doesn't find anything. TVSU doesn't find anything. Machine came with no instructions or other information (other than Win8 recovery disks; the machine is running Win7 as a downgrade.)
Bluntly, I am more than a little disgusted with Lenovo, from whom I have always had superb service. This particular issue is inexcusable. And now the Intel RAID device setup is reporting one of the two disks has an error. Ouch.
Going back in the box and back to Lenovo. I don't have time to screw around with this nonsense.

FWIW, "CTO" means "configured to order" and indicates customer-selected options at time of order. You won't find "CTO" as part of the MT-M when looking for drivers or documentation since it doesn't indicate a specific hardware configuration.
I don't have personal experience with ThinkStations but I'd expect 4352 to be sufficient when looking things up.

Please help me: streaming with the wrt54g

I got a wrt54g v 5. I have tried to stream web-TV at 800 kb/s from my internet connection of 3.5 Mbps. When I connect my computer straight to the modem by wire, the streaming works perfect. When I try to stream the same on the WLAN it freezes afther just some seconds. I have also tried to measure the speed with wire and wireless, and it gets the same result about 3.5 mbps. My computer is also the only one on the network.
Why does this happen? I have updated the firmware, tried different MTU values and also tried some other different things like turn of the cryptation, have the computer right beside the router and different wireless channels. It still freezes. I am starting to get frustrated.
So what can I do to get a 800 kbps stream to work with this 54 mbps wireless network??? Is it possible? Or is not the router good enought? If it don't work: ehy cant a router send a signal that is 60-70 times slower than 54 mbps?

Message Edited by sew on 05-05-200710:24 AM54g is not really fast enough, but it can work if you use buffering(WMP or VLC), try something simple like running a batchfile which does a ping in a loop while streaming.
Try also these settings:
Beacon Interval: 50
DTIM Interval: 1
Fragmentation Threshold: 2307
RTS Threshold: 2306 -
Old Computer Died. Set up new computer with old WRT54G
Hi,
what is the easiest / best way to get up and running with my new computer(The old one died). The old WRT54 router is working fine and is up and running as always.
Do i need to change the router settings or install any software on the new machine?
Also earlier the router was configured with WEP security. If I were to upgrade to WPA, what would i need to do.

if the router is up and running, no need for you to reinstall or reconfigure the router. As long as you can go online when new pc is connected to it, no worries...it will work fine...If you want to change the encryption from wep to wpa, just go to the website, www.linksys.com/kb and search for the answer id 2651... -

Thanks to those who replied to my pleas for help. I was finally successfully in connecting my router and can now access the internet from both computers; HOWEVER, now I cannot get my printer to work from the computer that it is not hard wired to. I set up home networks on both computers; both run on Windows XP. I am trying to get them to share a hp psc 2410 photosmart all-in-one. It works great on the computer it is hard wired to. Any suggestions?

New ISP, Time Capsule No Longer Works - help!
OK, today, I changed ISP with a new router.
Everything was going OK, all iOS devices, all wi-fi printers, Apple TV, and Airport Express all connected and worked fine. The only issue is my Time Capsule. I just can't get it to work.
It was setup to 'Join An Existing Wi-fi Network' and everything used to be fine with my TM backups going to it.
Now, Airport Utility (6.2) won't see it at all over wi-fi, and if I connect to the router via ethernet, AU sees it. I tried to change the configuration, but there is no 'Connect to an Existing Wi-fi network' available, just 'create new' or 'extend existing'.
Even if I try either of these options, it doesn't work. After a couple of minutes, I get a 'an error occurred when trying to update the configuration' message.
I have tried holding in the reset button, but to no avail.
Can anyone help? I'm on 10.8, by the way.Join a wireless network is not in v6 utility.. thanks so much apple.. you are a great help.
Mind you .. we do not recommend at any time using "join a wireless network".. it is slow and likely to cause issues at some point with corrupting the backup.
The best idea is to install v5.6 utility on your Mac.. this can be done.. google for various methods.. here is mine which is free.. others use a tool you have to pay for.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

If you want to do the job correctly though.. start from a factory reset.
To do this hold in reset button and then power on.. keep holding in reset without releasing for about 10sec until the front led flashes rapidly.
Do all setups using ethernet. I recommend you bridge the TC and use roaming setup for wireless. It works very well.

Even if you mix with a non-apple router, you simply create a wireless network on the TC.
Exactly the same name (SSID) as the main router .. same security WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES and is the only suitable security nowadays.
Same password for wireless. 8-12 characters is enough .. up to 20 if paranoid. pure alphanumeric.
The only thing different is wireless channels. Set them both to auto may work or maybe chaos.
At 2.4ghz there are only three non-overlapping channels.. make sure the main router is set to 20mhz only.. and use one of the channels, 1, 6, 11. Then set the TC to one remaining.
5ghz in the TC use lower channels.. 36, 38, 40 etc work much better than 150's

We recently switched ISPs. To connect to the new ISP our Airport Extreme has to be in bridge mode. Now our Nintendo Wii won't connect to the Airport. Is it an issue with bridge mode that is causing this? We're running two Macs wirelessly with no problems. And the Wii did connect before the switch.
Hello and thanks for the reply. I gave this a try, turned off Airport on one of the computers and tried the Wii again. Still no connection. I should say that we're also running an old G4 (wired) off the Airport as well, with no problems. I've tried many things to make the Wii to work, including power cycling the Airport, turning off the security settings in the Airport, resetting the Airport to it's default and redoing the network, resetting the network setting on the Wii (several times), moved the Airport closer to the Wii, all with no luck. The Wii "sees" the Airport but won't connect to it. I'm at a loss for anything else to try, so any help is appreciated.

I am very troubled with my ipod touch because I don't see my ipod folder showing up on my computer. i have tried all possible ways to make it viewable but somehow i end up seeing only my internal storage (dcim/pictures). Its really frustrating because bought a new laptop with windows 8 and installed a new itunes but only to find out that i cant transfer my songs right away.... I can connect my ipod touch to the itunes swiftly but to transfer my songs from my ipod to my computer is such a hassle. so please if anyone could help me figure this out... I cant buy an iphone unless i fix my problem with my ipod.....

I just purchased a new iMac with the latest iLife suite. As part of the migration process in setting up the new machine the 3Ivx video codec was brought onto the new machine as well as my old movies. When I tried opening the movies iMovie crashed and told me it had a problem with the 3IVX video codec, in doing some research I found that the 3IVX video codec created a problem so I deleted it and downloaded Perian 123. The Perian 123 works well with Quicktime but iMove does not now see my old movies. At this point I cannot open any of my movies. Can anyone help? Thanks

In iMovie hold down CTRL and click on the clips that don't open. Choose Reveal in Finder. Convert those files by dragging them into the window of converter program, and save as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). That format is native to iMovie and will work perfectly. -

iTunes Match is a subscription system that allows you to upload your own music (e.g. coped from CDs) to the cloud so that it shows (in the cloud) on your devices and computers without having to sync/copy it.
Automatic downloads allows to, for example, buy an app on your computer's iTunes and have it automatically download on your phone without having to connect and sync it or go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your download and download it yourself - but doing that, going to the Purchased tab and redownloading an app, should get it associated.
But no, I'm not aware of any problems that not having it associated causes. -

Because you can only synce with one iTunes library and you are switching libries by using the new computer. To nake this yyour syncing computer:
- Move all the media(apps, music, synced video and photos etc) to the new computer.
- Connect the iPofd yo the computer and bake a backup fo the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes doe not include media.

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive. I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac. I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern. May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure? Comments? Help?
If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.
