Help! New Mac OS X killed iPhoto import!
I installed the new OS X (Leopard) in all my Macs now iPhoto wont import images from my Nikon D200. Anybody know the trick to get it to work. Also... I can remember how to not have iPhoto as the default photo importer! Actually the problem is only on the G5 (Intel processor) and not a problem on the G4s. If I just dump the D200 drive icon into iPhoto it works, but... that's not really the way to do it, it should work by clicking on the import button.
Go to Image Capture and use the Preferences there to set what happens when camera is connected.
As to the import problem: start with the troubleshooting basics
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

I just got my new mac, when i try to import music files or even import a CD, it says "Error, a file was specified instead of a folder". What do I do, It is very frustrating i have all my music from my old PC and a bunch of CD's i cannot import.
I haven't encountered this error, but let's try to figure out a solution.
CDs. Let's tackle this.
First, read this:
http://www.woopid.com/video/626/iTunes-Setup-Assistant
As soon as you insert a CD (assumng you have a drive), iTunes should immediately open and ask if you want to add this to your Library. Say "Yes." (You haven't set the quality levels yet, but we want to set up your library, first.)
Music. If you have individual tracks you want to import, keep iTunes open, and simply drop the tracks in the "Songs" part of the Library on the left side of the screen. The tracks should be added automatically.
If this isn't working for you, please describe the error -- or better yet, provide screenshots. I'm certain you will be able to set up your iTunes library pretty quickly. -
I am trying to transfer my old iPhoto library 9.5.1 from an old mac (OSX 10.9.5) to my new retina display mac, with Yosemite 10.10 and iPhoto 9.6. When I try to import the old library it asks if I want to shut down my current iPhoto library and open a new one. I have already transferred photos from my iPhone into iPhoto 9.6 on the new mac.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else. -
Please help new mac user is getting super frusturated with mail
I am trying to send a peice of mail to one of my friends but when i click send it says:The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user “PierceP”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel. But i type in my password and nothing changes. I even went into my preferences and changed the password but it still will not allow me to send mail. PLease help
PierceHi again. It seems like there is information people are looking for to help you that they don't have. It occurs to me that you have a new Mac and you perhaps have an Apple Store with a Genius Bar in your area. A great experience for you might be to visit one and let them setup your mail for you (for free) and debug, if there is a problem of any sort. You can make an advanced reservation at Apple Stores at http://www.apple.com/buy/. Select the nearest store and make reservation. If you haven't been in an Apple Store, you're in for a treat.

On new mac can't open iPhoto 6.02 files?
I just purchased a new mac mini.
On my previous mini I was using iPhoto 6.02.
It does not appear that iPhoto 11 will accept the old libraries.
What to do? Thanks.
OwenYou're running iPhoto 9.5.1, right? Download and launch the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 (it'll be located in your Applications/Utilities folder after installation), select your library in the next window and upgrade the library.
When that's complete launch iPhoto 9.5.1 and it should open your library.

Managing Family Clips on a Mac - Help - New Mac User
I am new to the Mac and am looking for the most efficient way to manage my media. I have 300+ files that are in the later stages of being converted to Mp4. All of the files will reside in /Movies/imported.
What should I do next?
Should I import everything into iMovie using the "move" option?
Should I import into Itunes and only import Movies I want to edit or post online. I am assuming this option will give me duplicates.
I think iPhoto can manage movies thoughts ?
My goal is to have only one local copy of the files (30+ gig), have access through iTunes, and finally iMovie access to edit and post online without importing and duplicating data.
Does any of this make sense ? I think I am OCD...
What would you do with 30gig of family clips?
nullHello Richard,
I would place all the MPEG4 clips into iPhoto, where you could sort them to subject, year, etc. Then you could make a copy by dragging a clip to your desktop, leaving your original in iPhoto. Work with that copy in iMovie. -
New mac user struggling with iPhoto
OK, I feel like an idiot, I never imagined moving from a PC to a Mac would have such a learning curve! I have added about 1500 photos to iPhoto, sorted them into albums and folders and batch changed to text titles.... My library looks good.
I take my zillion digital photos and maybe download to the computer every week or month. There will be photos from several different events. Since I don't want that whole batch left together, I immediately sort into albums and folders. I can do this and use iPhoto easily, but my problems come when I try to access my photos outside of iPhoto. So if I choose to attach a photo to an email, or more importantly, create something in Shutterfly, all heck breaks loose! In my old world (using first Photo Shop Album and then PSE) I could just jump on Shutterfly, click add pics, browse and my album names would show and I could just import to Shutterfly. Now I do the same thing but I can find nothing. What am I missing? I thought when I batch changed everything it would solve my problem. Am I just not looking in the right place? This seems like it should be simple and I am a very experienced computer user, but I have not used a Mac in years and have never used iPhoto until now.
I wanted to just buy PSE for the Mac but I read that it is not really for the Intel based machines, so now I wait. I have no idea what other programs might work for me. Honestly, I want to do very simple stuff here, this surely can be done
Please advise : )
LesaLesa,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Yes, there is a learning curve. Apple has some helpful information about the how to use the features of OSX: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ and for PC users switching to Mac: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/.
Once you import photos into iPhoto, there is no need to access them through the Finder (think Windows Explorer). In fact, it is strongly recommended that you do not tamper with the items inside the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder in any way. Changes you make will not be recognized by the database, causing damage to the library and even a totally corrupted database. With your PC you were used to file browsing. iPhoto is not a file browser, and browsing through its structure to access your photos can lead you to damage the database.
To use your photos, launch iPhoto. There are many ways to organize them from within the application. To use them outside iPhoto, select the ones you want and do File > Export > File export to a folder on your desktop. The export dialog gives you the option to rename based on your iPhoto titles or album. You also have the option to resize your photos for better performance in an email or on a website. Upload the exports from the desktop, then delete it when you're finished. The originals remain safe in your iPhoto Library folder.
Albums have no representation in the Finder at all. They do not contain your files, but only a set of instructions for iPhoto to display your photos together. This allows photos to be in many albums with no duplication of the files.
When you title a photo, you do not change its filename. iPhoto keeps the original intact with no alterations, including the filename. The only way to rename the file itself is to do it before importing into iPhoto, or upon export from the library as I described above.
Two other ways to access your photos are to drag a thumbnail to your desktop, which creates a copy on your desktop for use in another application. Or right-click (Control-click) a photo and choose "Show File" from the contextual menu. A Finder window will open with that photo selected.
You can set iPhoto to work with an external image editing application in iPhoto's preferences. I use PSE 4, and I highly recommend it. With it set as my editor, I choose my photos from within iPhoto, double-click to open them in PSE, edit, then Save. This gets them saved back into the iPhoto Library, and my edited version replaces the thumbnail I see in the iPhoto viewing window. My mini is a PPC, so I can't give you an idea of how well (or how slow) PSE works on an Intel Mac. I haven't personally seen anyone not use it due to being on an Intel machine. There are others here who know - perhaps they'll chime in.
Another excellent resource is the iLife Multimedia tutorials. You can begin with iPhoto, then find links for iMovie and the others. http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/iphoto/
Please don't hesitate to ask as many questions as you need.

I have a brand new imac, 1 month old. Only thing I installed on it was Firefox but didn't really like it so I'm using Safari 4. However, on certain sites (i.e. Time Mag, PCWorld) it will randomly crash. Others it will work fine (i.e. ESPN, Amazon, WeatherChannel). I would reopen Safari and it would work like nothing happened until another random site. This happens once every day or so. Is it a plug-in problem? What minimum plug-ins do I need to run Safari smoothly? Can you help me out? Thanks.

(No newbie apology necessary, we were all new once and welcome new folks from the +"dark side"+).
The preference file is located in your home folder (abbreviated ~) here: ~library>preferences. Preference files may become corrupted (very rare, but it happens) and then cause all sorts of strange events. OS X rebuilds preference files with default values as needed.
Also, something I did not mention that may help. When Safari is open reset Safari (from the menu bar option).
At this point I would NOT mess around with plug-ins. That could be reserved for later if other things do not help.

Moving the entire music folder...help new MAC
I just did as Article ID: 301748
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
says to do. So now I have two folders with ALL MY MUSIC in them (22 GB).
It gives directions on how to remove the old folder but being new to MAC i can't find the old folder.
Any help would be great. I have tried to locate it but I just get folders for every artists......I can't find that folder.
I'm new to mac so I'm looking for it as if I'm on that other thing (PC).
I go to finder them click on music and there is no folder that you mention just 300 other folders of all the artists I have on my computer. How do I find the folder that you mention? -
Tried some things Safari 4 crashes on certain sites...help new mac user
I have a brand new imac, 1 month old. Only thing I installed on it was Firefox but didn't really like it so I'm using Safari 4. However, on certain sites it was randomly crash. I would reopen Safari and it would work like nothing happened until another random site. This happens once every day or so. I removed the "Java Cocoa" plugin and the "assistance" box is unchecked in Preferences. What plug-ins do I really need for Safari and what happens if I remove them all? Can you help me out? Thanks.
Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
The next time Safari unexpectedly quits, select "report" on the Quit Panel. Then, copy/paste the entire crash report to your reply here. Perhaps the crash report will shed some light on what is occurring. -
Flash player help-new mac user
First of all, let me apologize if this question has already been addressed. I've searched the forums and the web and can't seem to come up with anything that I can use. On top of that, I've never used a mac before--this is my first one. I'm feeling completely inept.
I purchased a macbook pro in August 2011, running OSX 10.7.2. Also Intel based, if that makes a difference.
I have no use of Adobe Flash sites. I have installed the latest version, uninstalled, re-installed, etc. etc. No matter what, I consistently get messages that I need to install the latest version of flash to use certain sites.
Tonight, I tried again, but once downloaded I got a message that said I already had Flash Player installed.
I'm totally confused about what should happen when I download the player, and where it should be installed. When I click the download tab in the upper right corner or choose flash player from the finder, the disk utility window opens up. I may be wrong, but I really don't think it should be there, and I have no idea where to put it or how to tell it to get there. It appears to be installed, but not functional.
Can someone suggest a solution in idiotspeak? I'm kinda at my wit's end here. . . .
Thanks!

Not enough room for iWork, please help new mac user!
I'm a college student in great need of a word processing application for my Powerbook G4. I just bought iWork for that reason and am stuck because I don't know how to get rid of the right things on the Hard drive to make enough room for it. It says it needs 74.4GB and only has 62.3GB free on the hard drive. Please let me know how I can free up space and get my homework done asap! Thanks, Caro
You should have a look at OmniGroup's OmniDiskSweeper application, which you can find here:
http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
This application will analyse your hard disk usage and list all the files according to category (application, document, etc.) and size, thus making it easy to identify large and useless files. Note that this application is, technically speaking, not free, as you have to pay $15 to enable the delete button. However, if you've identified several large files which you'd like to delete, you can easily do that in the Finder, so from a practical point of view, DiskSweeper is free. Oh, one last suggestion: be careful when deleting stuff. Try avoiding deleting stuff that is on your system or library folders, UNLESS you really know what you are doing. -
I can't copy my old iPhoto library from a external HD to my new mac?
Hi. I just bought a new mac and want to have all my old iphoto pictures from my old mac into my new iPhoto library. I've tried to copy the old iPhoto library into a external HD(works fine), but the problem is that I can't copy it out from the external HD an in to my new mac again. It just say that it doesn't work because it doesnt have enough storage.
I don't get why it would say that, because the old iPhoto library is 89.55 GB and I haven't used any memory at all on my new macbook pro, and my old macbook pro has memory enough to have the iPhoto library on it (the mac is 5 years old and has almost a full memory), so why can't my new macs memory manage the iPhoto library when my old mac can? It doesn't make sense at all.
I've googled it, and it says everywhere that it should work by simply copy to external HD and move over the library from there and into the pictures folder, but this definitely doesn't work for me.
I hope that some please can help me with this, I don't know what do to.Do you know how much space the cheapest macbook pro with reatina has?

How to move iPhoto Library from external drive to new mac?
I have exported a copy of my iPhoto Library from my old mac to an external hard drive. How can I import entire library into iPhoto of new mac? When I click Import to Library, I'm unable to highlight iPhoto Library file listed on my external hard drive in Finder. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Is the iPhoto library on the new computer empty? If it is, quit iPhoto and just drag the iPhoto library on the New Computer to the trash and drag the iPhoto library from the EHD to the pictures folder on the new computer - there is no importing involved - you NEVER want to import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto Library
If you want to run the new computer with the iPhoto library on the external drive simply launch i{Photo while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library to point to the EHD

Question re: Copying an old iPhoto Library to a new Mac
Hi -
I have an old, G5 PowerPC iMac, running OSX 10.4.11 and iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5), and a new (2013) MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.3 and iPhoto version 9.5.1.
I'd like to know if I'd have any problems copying the old iPhoto Library (22 GB) from the G5 iMac to the new MacBook Pro. I'm concerned that the great difference in versions would prevent the library from updating to the current version once it is copied. Thanks for any information or help anyone can provide. Thanks,
ShellyCopy the library to your new Mac.
To be able to upgrade it to iPhoto '11 run the iPhoto Library Upgrader on your newer Mac, see this document:
