Help! new time capsule not setting up on 2nd computer

I recently got time capsule for my desktop and laptop. I was able to set it up on the laptop but it's not working on the desktop. It keeps asking me to go through the set up process all over again, even though it is telling me that time capsule is already all set up and working fine. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I presume you are running Mountain Lion and 6.2 utility.. we need to know that.
You should not need to setup the TC at all from second device.. it is setup and working on laptop.. that is enough.
On the desktop it should be accessible in the same way as the laptop.. same name same passwords etc.
If not, then fill us in on the whole network layout.
Modem what kind.. what broadband.
Is the Modem a router?
Is the TC plugged into the modem.. in bridge or router mode?
I guess the laptop is connected by wireless? Desktop is connected how?
Are you trying to get TM to work.
Mount the disk in finder if you can. Then you should be able to direct TM to use it.

  • Time machine was not working.  I bought a new time machine and migrated time machine files to new time capsule; not recognized by yosemite

Time machine was not working after yosemite upgrade on new and old MacBooks in my house.  I bought a new time machine and migrated time machine files to new time capsule. I changed the names of the older sparse bundles to the default values.  Yosemite still does not recognize them.

I presume the bought a time machine means a time capsule.
How did you migrate the Time Machine files?
From where? A Time Capsule or external drive?
It is difficult to get TM working with Yosemite.. since it doesn't work after the upgrade on the old TM backup.. it will not work on the migrated files either.
You simply start a new backup and store the old backups for a few months until you are ready to dump them.
The instructions for inheriting old backups is B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
However it is just unlikely to work.. TM in Yosemite is very different. Broken even.
I also strongly recommend people to use Carbon Copy Cloner or some other 3rd party backup until Apple get the bugs fixed. And after several months.. they are still rampant.

  • Brand New Time Capsule Not Saving Applications

I have a brand new T2 Time Capsule that I set up less than one week ago. All the settings appear to be fine, however when I went to restore an email client application today from the Time Capsule, I could not find any applications. My application folder in the Time Capsule does not have any applications inside the folder. I checked my TC preferences, and there is nothing listed in the backup exceptions.
Please instruct me as to how to save my applications via the Time Capsule backup process and how to access and restore them to my MacBook.

This is not normal.. TM is supposed to backup everything on the computer except what you deliberately exclude.. there is nothing you have to do to make it backup your applications.
There was a bug however in Mountain Lion.. where certain things were not backed up.
    Look at D10 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
As is often the case.. bugs are not fixed between versions rather they just carry on in different forms and new ones are added.. so far Mavericks has not been kind to TM.
My recommendation is that it is unreliable.. do not trust TM to make full complete backups.
Buy CCC or another backup software.

  • Help! Time Capsule not connected to the Internet

    Hi everyone!
I have this problem, and hope someone can help me.
In my house I have this network
Modem/Router Netgear DGN2200 connected via ethernet to Airport Express.
Airport Express is set to create a wireless network, bridge mode.
In the house I also have a Time Capsule set to extend the wireless network, bridge mode.
Time Capsule is connected via ethernet to my TV decoder to have extra services through the Internet.
Ok. All worked fine until a couple of days ago.
Then, I didn't change anything but Time Capsule (and so the TV decoder) seems to have no acces to the Internet anymore.
But Time Capsule is still available on the local network, so I can access to it, make backups and so on.
    What should I do?!
Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad English.
    Matteo

Did you try a simple reboot of the network devices.. turn off all the network stuff..
    Restart in correct order..
    1. Modem.. wait 2 min.
    2. Express.. wait 2min.
    3. TC.. wait 2min.
Then try the TV.. if it doesn't work reset both the express and TC to factory.. and redo the setup.. you had them setup correctly but please use SMB names.. since the TV will not talk apple.. SMB names are short.. 2-20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
so for example the name of the Express.. AEx Name of the TC.. TC1
    Name for wireless. Aex24ghz
Use a different name for 5ghz if your Express is a dual band latest model. Aex5ghz
Use fixed channel so that it is locked.. eg. 2.4ghz on channel 11 5ghz on channel 40.
The TC will follow the wireless exactly.
    See how you go.

  • Why does my new Time Capsule not connect

Yesterday I bought a new 1T Time Capsule so I could back up my son's computer before he heads overseas for a university exchange.
The first hint of trouble is that my computer (MacBook Pro) spat out the CD. After several attempts I tried another CD, no problems. so it's not my drive.
Anyway, I have fully updated OS X 10.5.8 running and tried to link via Airport Utility.
Again no joy. No matter which way I wire (Ethernet cabel) the Time Capsule, via my Linksys modem/router or directly to the computer, Airport Utility says there are no wireless devices connected.
At this stage I'm not the least worried about wireless transmission. I simply want to back up my son's computer before he takes it to the airport. Since I have a day job I can't contact Apple Support during business hours and they have not been available today.
    What are my options?
    Desperate Dad

If you are adding the Time Capsule behind another router then you must go into "Bridged Mode". So the main router will be the only thing doing NAT and you will avoid the deadly double NAT.
With a Mac you don't need the CD/DVD. Just go to the folder /Applications/Utilities/ and launch Airport Utility (connecting via the Ethernet cable. If you are setting it behind another router Launching in Airport Utility select the Time Capsule and let it open. Then stop and look at the bottom of the pane and select "Manual. This will set up the Manual setup and buttons will appear on the top. There select "Wireless" and near the bottom of the new pane use the pull down to select "Bridged Mode". This way only the main router will be assigning IPS.
If the router is connected to the main modem to the ISP you must turn off the modem for 5 minutes so the ISP server will reassign an IP address to the NEW device. This goes for ANY router being setup on a existing modem. Now in the Manual Wireless setup if you are right behind an ISP modem set it for "Sharing a single IP" to do NAT in the Time Capsule.
The important thing is to first setup for no wireless security and then go to each device on your network to see what each device is able to receive in wireless security. Then use Airport Utility again to setup the appropriate wireless setup and security setup to your devices highest capability.
So /Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility is your Time Capsule setup device.

if you're using a wireless connection, it will be slow. Apple suggest to use an ethernet connection for the initial backup. subsequent backups are incremental and can be done via wifi.
you can interrupt the backup and start over using an ethernet connection or just let it run - and be patient

  • New Time capsule not connecting to wifi, New Time capsule not connecting to wifi

I just got a 2T time capsule, and it picked it up on the wifi the first time, and I went through and clicked what I wanted for it, but now it's not getting picked up on the wifi.  It's about as useful as a brick right now.
I'm on an imac and I just want to use it for backup, and not a router.  I want to do half for time machine backup, and then half for movie files to access from the time Capsule on my iMac.

Are you using join a wireless network on the TC?? This is a mess..
Please describe the whole existing networking.. and how you are trying to fit the TC into it.

  • Help requested - Time Capsule not detected by iMac

I've just purchased an iMac and a time capsule. The iMac has connected to my existing wireless network without any problem. However, it doesn't detect the Time Capsule (I intend using the Time Capsule purely for back up). Any thoughts on why the iMac cannot detect the Time Capsule? I've tried moving the Time Capsule to different locations to see if it makes a difference but it remains undetected by my iMac.

Have you tried setting it up with Airport Utility, installing the software that came with it? You need to configure the Time Capsule, just as you would any other wireless router. Also, double check your network settings.
If you still can't detect it after the initial "set up," try connecting to it directly with an ethernet cable for the initial connection.

  • Trouble communicating with My new Time capsule 1TB

I am having trouble picking up the new time capsule that we got all other computer we have are picking up fine

You may need to update 10.4 to the current level (10.4.11) to get a response. your profile says you are at 10.4.3.
This is from the Time Capsule system requirements:
For shared hard drive: Mac with Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later

  • How do I set up my new Time Capsule just to back up not as a wireless?

Can anyone tell me how to use my new Time Capsule just for back up not as a wireless router?
I have an ATT Uverse for my wireless service and have not been able to get the two to work together.
I just want to plug my Time capsule in and connect it to my MacBook Pro with an ethernet an click backup.
So far my computer doesn't reconnect the Time Capsule.
    Thank you for your help

You will need to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to join the wireless network provided by the ATT Uverse router, as follows:
Either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Wireless tab > Wireless Network Name: <select the ATT Uverse network>
This configuration will allow your Mac to connect by wireless to the ATT Uverse router and perform Time Machine backups wirelessly.
If you want to only do this backups by wire, then you will need to connect the TC directly to the ATT Uverse router by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You can then connect the Mac to the TC by Ethernet as well for backups.

  • WiFi no longer working with new Time Capsule-can you help please?

    Hi all,
Just received my new Time Capsule (TC). It was a little problematic setting up, but probably due to my now choosing to increase my security from WEP to WPA as the TC set-up assistant suggests. Since then, I have had numerous problems getting my other computers and now my iPhone to connect with WiFi.
The problem is that despite entering all the new settings and WPA passwords for my connection with the TC, the iPhone will either momentarily recognize and go to wifi or simply stay on Edge.
On the former, with wifi active, as soon as I go to iTunes, Safari or check email, it reverts to Edge. On the latter, despite resetting, entering password, or tapping Settings and selecting my wifi connection, it will NOT connect and stays on Edge.
(Now, I'm on Edge! I'm bummed that with new hardware I have new problems that didn't exist before!)
Can someone who had this same problem tell me how they resolved it.
Here's the one clue I have, but would rather not resort to: When I first set up the TC, I had it on WEP with a WDS Network, and everything was working great and FAST! Now that I have increased the security—I will be backing up 3 computers to the TC—my iPhone and other computers seem to have intermittent or no wifi connection as a result.)

    Irving Gonzales,
If your computers are 802.11N capable, you might want to try an advanced setup that might help your Time Machine speeds some. I have not personally tested it, so it is just a personal theory at this point.
First, in a mixed environment the 802.11N clients all get slowed down.
First, configure the TC for 802.11N only.
Second, connect the Airport Express via ethernet to the Time Capsule
Third, configure the Airport Express for bridged mode (doesn't give out IP addresses), and for its own wireless network with a different name than the Time Capsule.
Have any 802.11b/g clients like the iPhone join the Airport Express' network.
    Thank you,
    Nathan C.

  • Setting up Air play with new time capsule and newer airport express?

I just recently purchased a new time capsule, and I'd like to use my current generation airport express to stream music from my apple devices. I just was wondering what I had to do in airport utility to set this up?  I was also wondering how to transition the network over from the old express to the new time capsule as far  software settings go. I really appreciate the help and assistance. Thanks folks. I'm really looking forward to setting up the network for our new iMac.

    Your setup is very easy..
This is how I would do it.
Remove the express from the network.. ie just unplug it but do not change anything in it. Keep the configuration as is until the TC is working.
Power off the cable modem.. this is requirement.. at least 20min is usually needed, dependining on your ISP.
Go into the airport utility and setup the TC as router for your network .. it is a simple setup.. but I would do as stated.. all short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric rather than accept Apple's names. That is for TC and wireless.
After 20min power up the cable modem.  Once it is running and you have internet access. you can proceed to setup the express to do the airplay. If the internet still doesn't work, power off the cable modem overnight..
Do not lose that express setup so if you absolutely have to, you can at any time substitute it back and have internet again.
So everything is working properly TC in place as full router.. now hard reset the express.. and simply use the airport utility to put it in extend wireless .. or plug in by ethernet if you are going to hard wire it.
The extend wireless setup is all done straight from the existing setup.
Now you can plug your express audio port into your speaker.. and setup the airplay via the itunes.
I will get Bob to give you his way of doing it.. There is no one RIGHT way .. but he can give you more info if you want a particular method.

  • Time machine not connecting with new time capsule

Will someone please help? I have just recently joined the MAC family and purchased a new Macbook along with a new time capsule. It took unbelievably long to get things running (ie wireless access with 2 other PC based desktops and a PC laptop and shared network printing with an USB connected printer to the time capsule)- I thought macs were supposed to be easy?! Anyways, the only thing that I cannot figure out is how to properly set up time machine. I follow the instructions and turn time machine on, choose my backup disc (which is the time capsule), but when I click "use for backup", I keep getting the "connection failed- server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" What am I supposed to do now? What is there to check when all of the other computers are able to access the internet (including the Macbook) and wirelessly print. The stupid timecapsule router function is working but the backup portion of it is not???!!!! Please help someone who is about to give the mac and the time capsule to the first person walking down the street - it has been a frustrating 2 days.

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click
              Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.
