HELP: New to Mavericks. Need advice on setting up secure user accounts

Hi,
I need advice on how to best set up user accounts on Mavericks.
I must set up an Administrative account...Any suggestion for best settings here to protect against targeted malicious exploits?
I would also like to set up two user accounts for everyday work with applications and Internet browsing done in such a way that the machine would be protected from malicious attacks but with a minimum of inconvience for the users ( myself and my wife ).
Thanks

Hi hassiman, any exploits will come in the form of users downloading suspect pieces of software like browser add-ons and extensions, device drivers and non-trusted apps.
Make sure that you do not use the admin account for any day to day use
Create two normal user accounts, one for each of you and use them day to day
When using the admin account to set up your system, pay very careful attention to the System Preferences > Privacy & Security area. There are various things to set up properly here:
There are three settings for how people can download software, 1) From Mac App Store only, 2) From App Store and registered developers and 3) from anyone. It defaults to 2) but check it and if you feel uncomfortable with that, set it to 1). This might prevent you from downloading and installing software you think you might need; but think carefully about wether you really need it and therefore wether you should temporarily allow it via a lower setting.
For the firewall, if you dont have a firewalled internet gateway device (a wireless router or similar), make sure the firewall is turned on. Most internet connection equipment does have such a firewall; make sure it is blocking any incoming connections by using its admin tool (usually a web browser interface). Consult its documentation for details.
Whenever OS X asks for a password to complete a task of any kind, look carefully at what is making it ask and if you aren't sure, don't go through with it; it is usually wanting the admin account name and ppassword to complete some kind of system modification (install, config etc.).
Make sure that you are both aware of the danger of installing any software that wants to add itself to your system or web browser. Things like custom search bars, extensions etc. If you are viewing a web page and it says you need "x" to see it or use it properly, make sure you really need to use that web site; otherwise don't do it.
It really all comes down to common sense; the worst security breaches and damage come from users who don't know what to do, but they still click "OK" when they should be clicking "cancel" or "close". Make sure you and your wife are fully aware that responsibility lies with yourselves. It is better to take a minute to decide wether to install something (even if it's 20 times a week) than spend days fixing a compromised system.

How can i set up multiple user accounts for my new ipad mini?

The iPad mini is basically a one user device. There are no Accounts. You can set up restrictions so that only you can do certain things.

New to the Apple and I want to set up a user account that will not delete the guest users files and allow and preserve their personal settings after log out. Is this possible?

The built-in guest user account will not do this. Simply create a new standard account and call it "Guest" or "Guest Users" or whatever you like.
Go to System Preferences > Users& Groups, click "+" to make a new account.

  • I need to MERGE a same named user account from one mac to another.

I am  a neophyte in the Mac World, seeking to move al of my son's material from hid old MacBook to a MacBook Pro that has a fresh install of Snow Leopard. I set up his user account on the MacBook Pro during the installation process. The user account on the Book has an identical name. He has used the Pro for two weeks. The need is to MERGE the accounts' information, NOT: 1) Renaming the user account to be transferred (THAT MIGHT MAKE HIM SCHIZOPHRENIC); 2) Replacing the existing user account with the one you are transferring (THAT WOULD MAKE HIM LOOSE TWO WEEKS OF HIS LIFE); or 3) Do not transfer this user account (WHICH WOULD MAKE HIM LOOSE TWO YEARS OF HIS LIFE), as these are the only options available (all unacceptable) via Migration Assistant using a Time Machine backup. If it is material, I made a backup of the Book before and after upgrading it to Snow Leopard. I attempting to migrate from the post-update backup. I'm tempted to try Ethernet migration, but suspect I will be faced with this same dilemma. I have reviewed other posts on this subject, and hope there is a better solution than putting the old User Account into the public folder of the Pro and then moving data into the new User Account.
Express Lane is closed down for the day, so this is my first experience in a discussion group. Anyone have any suggestions?

As long as the two accounts share the same username the solution is fairly simple with minor exceptions. On the new machine connect the backup drive you used. With the immediate exception of email, calendars, and contacts you can just drag the desired files from the backup drive onto the new computer putting them in their appropriate folders on the new computer - this would be the various folders in the /Home/ folder.
For email: Mac OS X Mail- How to import email
For iCal and Address Book it would be easiest to stay with the most recent data and copy these folders:
    /Home/Library/Calendars/
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook/
Copy these folders to the equivalent locations on the new computer. Then you also need to copy:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.abd.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ical.plist
into the appropriate folder on the new computer.

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/each GMail account, set up the SMTP Outgoing Server for each account separately, going into SMTP name/edit/Advanced and specify the Username of each account.  The Outgoing servers must be two different servers, authenticated by the Username and Password of each.
Otherwise, the GMail SMTP server will change the from address to that of the account where the SMTP server was setup.

  • Need advice on setting up an ideal network

Hello everybody! I have run into a small dilemma regarding general networking, and thought this forum to be the most fitting for such questions.
    In a couple of months, I shall be moving into a new apartment. Inside this apartment, there will be four wireless-capable units; two Macbooks with 802.11n, an iPod Touch with 802.11g, and a Nintendo Wii with 802.11g. As for the router, I have one Airport Extreme and one Airport Express, both with 802.11n. Now, for the dilemma;
Putting wireless freedom to it's greatest use, I thought it to be nice not having to directly connect my external hard-disks (a 1TB drive and a 320GB drive, respectively) to my Macbook in order to access the files put on these hard-disks. I would, in other words, connect those to my AEBS. However, having experience with the slightly...sluggish experience of 802.11g, I would very much like to make it a 802.11n-exclusive network, since you can't have some things with N speeds and others with G speeds in the same network. Tragically, doing so would make both my Touch and Wii without any wireless capabilities at all, which is not very desireable either.
So, am I forced to choose between the limitations of 802.11n and the sluggishness of 802.11g? Or is there any way that I can somehow have 2 networks in my home? Advise is very much apreciated, and I am prepared to buy new gear as needed.

If the range of all your wireless devices will not be an issue, I suggest that you configure your base station as a "Dual Band" network even though both are 802.11n devices. To do so, you would need to connect the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) via Ethernet, and then, reconfigure the AXn as a bridge and in either the 802.11n (b/g compatible) or 802.11g only radio mode. Have your non-"n" clients connecting to the AXn and the others to the AEBSn without loss of bandwidth performance.
Setting up a "dual band" network is described in the Designing AirPort Networks Using the AirPort Utility document, starting on page 48.

  • Help: New MBP Retina, need content off mid 2011 iMac!

    Hey everyone,
I have got my new Macbook Pro Retina up and running, but I need to get some things off of my iMac (mid 2011 model).
The retina display MacBook Pro has no firewire socket or ethernet.
Doing this wirelessly would be ideal.
I am just looking for my iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes to be replicated.
Your advice will be much appreciated.
    Lee.

If you have a bootable clone of the 2011's drive, you can use that to migrate your stuff over. Wirelessly will work too but not fast and painlessly.
    More info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
Note that there are two migration scenarios:
If you elect to migrate from another computer, Mac or PC, the first time you start up the new Mac, it will be done thru the Setup Assistant and will essentially copy over everything including the original user accounts and passwords.
If you do it afterwards by running Migration Assistant, incoming user accounts that are the same as those already on the new Mac will be renamed. This can lead to confusion and permission issues.

  • Little help for a novice - Need a ps script to list user with their email only.

    Hi,
I need to extract every month the user list which have their email information on it, so i don't need to extract the user services etc from the AD.
Today, i'm using this script i made :
    clear-host
    Import-Module activedirectory
    $CurrentDate = Get-Date
    $CurrentDate = $CurrentDate.ToString('dd-MM-yyyy')
    Get-ADUser -Filter * -server ad.test -SearchBase "dc=ad,dc=test" -Properties DisplayName,sn,givenname,Company,Description,EmailAddress | select DisplayName,sn,givenname,Company,Description,EmailAddress | export-clixml "C:\users_$CurrentDate.xml"
But like this i have every user of the ad even the ones without email.
Is there any filter to only extract theses one ?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    Try this:
    $CurrentDate = (Get-Date).ToString('dd-MM-yyyy')
    Get-ADUser -Filter "mail -like '*'" -Server ad.test -SearchBase "dc=ad,dc=test" -Properties DisplayName,sn,givenname,Company,Description,EmailAddress |
    Select DisplayName,sn,givenname,Company,Description,EmailAddress |
    Export-Csv "C:\users_$CurrentDate.csv" -NoTypeInformation
