HELP! No applications or Finder respond after start-up - MacBook Pro on Mavericks
Hi,
Currently our MacBook Pro is a bit slow on start-up and then it looks like everything has loaded until we click on something. Then the spinning wheel of death comes up and the computer freezes.
We've tried the following:
1. Repair file permissions (results all ok)
2. Repair disk (results all ok)
3. Re-installed OS X by restarting and holding down cmd + R
4. Re-booting in safe mode. Results were exactly the same problem.
It might be worth noting that we had just done some updates on the laptop via Launchpad.
Please help us, don't know what else to try!
Thank you!
M
If you want to preserve the data on the startup drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Hi, From about this Mac, my only HDD is full. When I have clicked and opened Storage screen when I've saw that there are 144 GB on Backups. I don't know which backup is it. and I really need help to find and delete it. I have Macbook pro running Maverick OS X.
I have a external HDD for time machine, but this backup I didn't know yet.
Please pleople... someone could help me? I'm in troubles.
SandroLinc Davis, According below: could I delete those snapshots from MobileBackups folder? would it solve my problem? ( if I want not my HDD 80% full) - Thank you a lot in advance.
Ordinarily, the best way to view your Local snapshots is via the normal Time Machine display, perquestion #15. If for some reason that's not working, you can see them via the Finder.
From a Finder menubar, select Go > Go to Folder and type /Volumes in the prompt, and select theMobileBackups folder. You'll see the same structure as for Time Machine backups on a separate volume: a Backups.backupdb folder containing a folder for your Mac, which contains a time-stamped folder for each snapshot. Inside each of those is a folder for each disk/partition that was backed-up, containing the same folder structure as on the original, with the contents as of the time of the backup.
Note that nothing in the size column is meaningful (if you Get Info on the MobileBackups folder, for example, it will show the total amount of space on the drive it's on! It will show dashes for the Backups.backupdb folder, or any of the dated snapshot folders). -
Cant find iphoto after restoring my Macbook Pro!
i restored my entire macbook due to unexplainable "other" files weighing it down. Now I can't find iphoto. where do i download this and how come it didnt restore on its own? I looked on the app store and itunes but couldnt find it. Please advise.
where do i download this and how come it didnt restore on its own?
IPhoto is not part of MacOS X.
Reinstall iPhoto, like you originally installed it. Which MacOS X version do you have, and how did you originally install iPhoto?
The problem is, that iPhoto is no longer sold at the AppStore. If your iPhoto version came preinstalled with MacOS X 10.7 or later, look at the Purchases tab of the AppStore and reinstall from there.
For earlier versions reinstall from the disk, that came with your Mac. But these earlier versions will not run on Yosemite. Which version do you have now? -

Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive. -
CS5.5 and OSX 10.9.4: Most applications will not launch even after uninstalling and reinstalling the Creative Suite 5.5. After my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 died, I had to purchase a new MacBook Pro 15 to replace it. I performed a Time Machine installation from that 2011 machine, and only Distiller and Acrobat would launch (none of the rest of the creation apps). So I ran the CS5.5 installer, uninstalled, then reinstalled, producing the same result. When I try to launch, nothing happens. What next?

Help! Installing updates an error occurred now my MacBook Pro will not restart. "Unable to find driver for this platform"
Did you try more than once? If so:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

Try re-adding your printer in System Preferences/Print & Fax. Not sure what type of printer you have, but if it was old and relying on an Appletalk connection, Snow Leopard dropped that support.

After updating my MacBook Pro to yeosemite I want my old desktop picture back. I did a full back up before the install. I found the "Settings" folder in Time machine but when I try to open it I get an error message saying "You can not open this folder. It is in TimeMachine".
Can you browse the Time Machine drive from Finder?
If you can and you know where the picture was stored ie on your desktop you can browse through the folder structure to the picture copy it and paste it somewhere on your new install before right clicking it and 'set as desktop background' -
I did a force close on Safari and after rebooting my macbook pro, i no longer see the Safari icon on the dock. How do i get i back?
If you can't get dragging to work, just click on Safari from your Applications folder, and it should appear in the dock. Then you can right-click on the icon and PIN it permanently there.

and whats the best brand to use?
thanks
also what kind of express cards addons are available for the macbooks?

You simply take out and look on the ram chip(s), the manufacturer's name should be all over the chip(s).
Not very helpful. Micron / Crucial makes maybe 2000 RAM types. If all you have is the RAM and the label you may be thin on luck.
Reading the manual +*that came with the mac*+ is one resource, regrettably rarely used before posting here.
