Help! no icons or desktop image

When I log on, no icons or menu bar (or anything) is to be seen. All I see is the standard "stars and universe background." I've tried restarting my Macbook but to no avail. Any tips on how to get my precious icons back so I can use my Macbook?

  • HELP!!!  Font Book crashed my OS, I only get my desktop image on startup

I was importing a large folder of fonts into Font Book, which apparently couldn't handle it and froze, I force-powered it down and now anytime I start up, I get my desktop image and my cursor moves but I get no menu options or anything but a search icon (magnifying glass) over a tiny portion of what would be the top menu bar. When I roll over this I get the spinning color wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Font Book importing large font library

Restart and hold down the shift key. This starts in safe mode. rebuild permissions and try restart again. It might take a few minutes to start in safe mode. If this works fine but dont use font book. I'll tell you another way to deal with fonts.

  • Ask your question.please help itunes will not launch on my computer the icon on desktop has changed to a white folder no error message appears and it appears but then disappears in task manager when the programme will not open quick time is working

please help i need to fix my itunes it will not launch on my computer . no error message appears it simply will not run. the icon on desktop has changed to a white folder and it still appears in programmes in start menu but will not open. it appears in task manager but disappears when the programme will not open

You music etc should not be affected by problems with the iTunes program, nevertheless it is always a good idea to backup your data.
You haven't said if there was any error message when you tried to start iTunes. If  there was one please give it in full.
Also check to see if QuickTime works, iTunes can not work without it. If QuickTime doesn't work, it has to be fixed before worrying about iTunes.
Then restart your PC and open your Task manger and select the Processes tab.
Try to start iTunes, does iTunes.exe appear on the processes tab? If so does it disappear again or remain although the programs does not open?

i have connected my macbook pro to my tv via MDP to HDMI port cable, all that is showing up is the basic desktop image without any icons, what do i do to correct this

Your MBP is running in "extended desktop" mode, where the two screens together make one larger area to display windows. You can drag one or more windows from the primary (internal) screen to the secondary (TV) screen. By default, the secondary screen is off to the right of the primary screen.
If you would prefer the two screens show the same image, you want to switch to "mirroring" mode. You will have to pick a single resolution for both screens, which may look poor on one or the other.
Both the relative positions of the two screens in extended desktop mode and the switch to mirroring mode can be set in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.

  • Please help my desktop images, wallpapers gone.

Please community i need your help. I restored my computer from Lion to lion, before i had Leopard and i had all my favority desktop wallpapers, for example aurora , earth horizon , earth etc..      When i installed for the first time Lion , i got even more desktop images  for ex. Aurora at grey or blue colors those i loved so much . I am so new to mac's ok i did not even know where my folders were, i even wanted to get the same background images for me phone too ^^. But when i did a restore from Lion to Lion means that i erased(and i forgot to backup or search for the desktop images on my mac it was to late ) my disk and got the install all over again , all my desktop wallpapers were gone. Now please if possible for some1 to sent me if he got upgraded from Leopard to Lion and did not erased or kept a backup of desktop images, to simple sent me the folder with all the descibed images i mention, i would be very happy again thank you.

have had the same problem. also not a computer buff - mine had not been in for work when it would go to sleep after i had shut if down. happened a few times then i lost photos, lots of them. took it to local APPLE repairs and they found nothing, 21 days later.
last night it did it again - powered off at home and sleeping when i got to the office.
    any advice?

  • Left align desktop icons to keep image uncovered

All right, this similar question has popped up a few times with, generally, two responses:
It's totally ridiculous that someone would care where the desktop icons end up by default, and
Just turn off snap to grid, and move the icons manually
In response to the first common answer, the reason I would like to set all my icons to "read" top-down-left-to-right instead of the top-down-right-to-left methodology is because I have a desktop image framed with a person on the right; therefore, as the desktop fills up - the person is quickly covered with icons. While this is a cute game and motivator for keeping the desktop uncluttered - it's just annoying to have to. (And, before you mention it, I don't want to flip the image, because the person is wearing a t-shirt with writing - which would then be reversed...I'm a designer with a bit of OCD for that sort of thing.)
In response to the second (and most) common answer, this is fine for "permanent" artifacts, but the items on my desktop (in my desktop folder) are temporary - though not under deadline - to be moved somewhere else, be it the trash or to another folder. I also take a lot of screen shots - which also appear up-down-right-to-left.
So, imagjne you have a picture of your husband or wife and they are holding your child in their left arm. While your spouse is centered and completely unfettered unless things get out of hand on the desktop - your child is constantly having files put over top of him or her...it's the best I got.
Bascially, I'm looking for a third option here. There has to be a setting - even if it's only accessible through Terminal - governing the automatic placement of icons as they are added to the desktop folder and translated to the virtual desktop.

    Maybe try:
    double_buffer yes
    own_window yes
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type normal
    own_window_hints undecorate,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Does a Dark Desktop Image Help Save Battery Life?

I know this is a weird question.
But think about it: if you use a very bright desktop image, say something like this: http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/4540/deserttoyota24wf.jpg
and if, in the second case, you use a quite dark one, with a lot of "black" pixels that actually does give a lot less light (the one here is my desktop picture, a map with a light-rendering effect):
    http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8049/europewidefx7wq.jpg
    1. does the darker desktop screen consume less battery power for the smaller amount of "glowing" pixels?
and, as I am asking stuipid questions,
    2. does the darker screen help in prolonging your Powerbook screen's lifespan?
I have been asking myself these questions ever since I got my brandnew PB 17" HD (October 2005), and although they seam strange I am serious about it.
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 HD + G4 QS 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Your backligth seems to be white is'nt it ?
So to known how much you use electric power to switch a pixel from white to black, the best way is:
    1) to turn off all your ligths in your house
    2) to remember your electricity company counter index
    3) mesure the time the powerbook is on
    4) put your screen with a white background
    5) change the background to black
    6) run to the electricity company counter and write down the index
    7) substract the start index from the end index
    8) substract powerbook electric comsuption
    9) divide this result by the number of pixel your LCD have it will give you the electric comsuption for one pixel.
    Hope this help

  • Please Help!! I need to convert these tiny icons into vector images?!

I'm having trouble using live trace and converting these icons into vector images. They are of such low resolution and I am even having trouble tracing them in illustrator. Could someone help me out?? I tried it on livetrace, but it doesnt seem to give me the result I need...The pentool is painful to use on such tiny images...

If you aren't comfortable with the pen tool, try this: I used the Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, and Rotate tools, Object>Path>Offset Path, and Subtract from shape area (or whatever it's called in your version of AI) in the Pathfinder panel. Also a few guides. It took just a few minutes, and it wasn't necessarily the best or the fastest way. Look at the shapes that make up the image and their relationships: the top of the tree is basically a bunch of ellipses or circles equidistant from and equally spaced around a point. Draw an ellipse over the tree image that looks like the right shape for one of the lobes, select the Rotate tool, opt/alt-click about in the middle of the tree top, and set the angle to 360÷number of lobes (in this case, 8), press enter. Hit cmd/ctrl D until you have enough lobes. draw a circle to fill the gap in the middle. Similarly for the other shapes. The top of the mortarboard hat is basically a square, rotated 90° and vertically compressed. the bottom of it is an ellipse with the direction lines/handles adjusted to change the curves of the bottom. And that's just one way to do it. Live Trace is useless for this kind of task; you need to draw it.

    Oh, yeah: Object>Compound Path>Make
Or better than that get comfortable with the pen tool and Illustrator in general and perhaps take a course so you can use the application.

  • Cannot change desktop image

Yeah. I changed it before by going under the apple (top, left), clicking system prefs, and then going clicking 'desktop images and screen saver.' But now I can't change my desktop image because when I attempt that process of clicking the apple and clicking system prefs and then clicking-what should be there but isn't-the desktop and screen savor icon, which is plaining missing. Its on my girlfriend's mac. I don't know what went wrong.
Anyone know what happened to that sweet, sweet icon? I'll really appreciate anyone, who could help fix the problem for me. Thanks!

  • Hello! i downloaded OS X Mavericks on my mac .since then my computer didn't restart properly. My desktop image doesn't appear after logging in and i'm unable to shut it down.

Hello! I downloaded OS X Mavericks on my Mac and my pc didn't restart properly.my desktop image doesn't appear and i can't shut down my pc. what can i do ?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Missing desktop images on imac

If someone can please shed any light on this problem?
After first switch on of the new year.... my desktop image had changed and when I went into the desktop image folder it was empty.... all of my iPhoto images
are still ok... just the desktop images that appear to be missing???
Not the end of the world but curious to know why this has pahhened and if anything else will have changed that I don't know about???
    Any help greatly appreciated.

To see your user folder in the Finder sidebar open a Finder window. From the menu choose Finder > Preferences to open the Finder Preferences window. Under Favorites check your name (the user name you choose for yourself). Your username will show up in the Finder sidebar. You can also check Pictures to see to hopefully show the link to your iPhoto Library.
By default your iPhoto Library will be in your Pictures Folder unless you moved it.
This short video on YouTube explains it well: Display Missing Finder Sidebar / Icons - Mac OS X Mavericks - YouTube
If you still need help I would do to the Apple Support Communities at Welcome | Apple Support Communities since the Finder and iPhoto are both both Apple products.
