Help! No internet connection for airport extreme - any suggestions?

Help!  I am currently (successfully) using an airport express for wifi - but I'm having a lot of trouble upgrading to a new airport extreme.  As instructed, I've powered down my cable modem before turning on the extreme, but after I'm done with the set up - it tells me I don't have internet access.  When I unplug the extreme and turn the Express unit back on I've got service with no problem.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Internet connection via Airport Extreme/router thats not working, why?

I have been having problems with the internet connection via Airport Extreme which I find it a bit unusual and its still driving me nuts! This is what happened:
I have lost my internet connection last Sunday evening upon my return from a weekend away from home. The last time I have used the internet connection on my macbook was the previous Friday morning. Prior to the apparent disconnection on Sunday, I have always used my internet connection wirelessly through Airport Extreme (that is connected via ethernet cable to the NETGEAR DG834v2 ADSL modem which had worked beautifully until the problem arose on my return). This wireless internet connection allowed me to surf the internet anywhere in my home.
However, upon the successful re-connection to the internet via the modem router, I have discovered several new problems. I have tried to set up the internet connection wirelessly again but instead the following happened:
    1. Router (Netgear) drops ADSL connection and cannot reconnect when connected to airport via Ethernet. (which is the case when using airport wireless).
    2. Router connects to ADSL fine when computer is connected to it via Ethernet. (However, router disconnects when magsafe power adapter is taken out for some inexplicable reason!)
    3. Router connects to ADSL fine when nothing is connected to the router (ie. No Ethernet connections)
    4. Router connects to ADSL fine when connected to airport via Ethernet and computer is connected to airport via Ethernet.
So from the above, I cannot connect to the internet properly whether wirelessly or not so I suspect it could be faulty router or could it be airport extreme? I have asked my ISP for an explanation and all they have said is that it cannot be the mis-configuration but could be to do with the power adaptors or the way plugs are set up and suggested I take out all the power plugs (and power surge protector) out to switch everything off, the macbook, router, printer and airport extreme. However, when I have re-plugged them all back in, the problems I have described above still persists!
Would appreciate any help if anyone here recognises why this is the case and what seems to be the cause of this. If so, what should I do? Though I have written back to my ISP again yesterday for more help so im waiting to hear from them...
    Thanks

  • Slow wireless internet connection using airport extreme

My wireless internet connection works but is very slow (<80kbs). The problem seems to be with the airport extreme (brand new, purchased in May 07) because my connection is very fast (>6mbs) when i connect by wire to the airport extreme base station. Signal strength is strong, so i can't figure out the problem. Any ideas?
    imac Mac OS X (10.4)

BK37, I hope you've solved your problem by now. But if not, and for the benefit of others reading this post, let me share what I (finally) discovered when I had virtually the same problem, i.e. 8mbps wired speed, <50kbps wireless speed.
I tried literally <span style="font-style:italic;">every suggestion I could find in the Airport discussions. First, I can assure you that changing the channel can give you incremental speed improvements in some instances, but for radical drops like yours, it's not the answer. Nor is turning off ipv6, or changing to WEP, or turning off Remote Access, or moving the AEBS, or or or or or....
With such a radical drop in speed, it's most likely you have a hardware-related blockage somewhere. In my case it was my wiring configuration. My setup was France Telecom Livebox (ADSL modem / ethernet & 802.11g router) --> Ethernet cable --> Linksys RTP 3100 IP phone adapter / router --> Ethernet cable --> AEBS --> 3 Airport Express set up to extend network and run AirTunes. After eliminating every other possible problem, I narrowed it down to the Linksys router, which for reasons I have yet to figure out was trapping the speed to the AEBS. I ethernet cabled both the Linksys router and the AEBS directly to the Livebox and presto! Back to blazing speed.
Hopefully this info will be helpful to you or some poor soul in the same situation, as I would have loved to have had it myself before I pulled every hair out of my head!

  • "No Internet Connection" via AirPort Extreme bridged to Time Capsule

    Hello,
We have a fairly large and odd home network consisting of a Comcast cable modem connected to a Netgear router, a Time Capsule wired to that one floor down (serving up WiFi and DHCP), and a new AirPort Extreme wired one floor below that, extending the WiFi network of the Time Capsule and set to bridge mode.
On one MacBook Pro (and possibly others, haven't had them available to test yet), trying to connect to WiFi while downstairs (i.e. to the AirPort Extreme) yields a strong wireless connection, but "no Internet connection"; checking via network diagnostics or the Network panel reveals that the MacBook Pro has no IP address. This seems odd, as it happens even if the connection is first made on the 2nd floor to the Time Capsule, where a valid IP is retrieved, and then carried downstairs; even though the same IP address should be valid, the laptop's WiFi menubar icon starts cycling again and eventually shows the "!" and reports no Internet connection.  Checking the Network panel reveals no IP address via DHCP.  However, if I let it sit for a minute or two, the IP address comes back (the same one!) and all is well, at least for a while.
I've tried switching to a manually-assigned static IP as a workaround, and that works perfectly well, but I'd like to get DHCP working properly if I can, for convenience's sake. Is there any reason why I should be having trouble with getting DHCP from the Time Capsule via the AirPort Extreme?

Actually, yeah, my predecessor explained that he was running DHCP on the Time Capsule instead of the Netgear because he hadn't needed DHCP prior to the adding of a WiFi point (all other nodes were on Ethernet), so it had always been turned off on the Netgear. But your suggestion makes a lot more sense, of course, so I've put the Time Capsule into bridge mode as well and started the DHCP server on the Netgear. Seems to be working with my iPhone, though that was always working okay. I won't have access to the laptop to test it until later this afternoon, but I have high hopes.
    Thank you!

  • My mac pro laptop cannot access the internet which is cable thru airport extreme any suggestions

My Mac pro cannot access the internet cable but is connected to wi fi thru airport extreme. my apple desktop works fine on the system and sits next to my laptop. any suggestions

"I have an ethernet cable in port 1 on my computer. That is configured manually to access ther office network."
Do you have a "real" IP address or a private (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x) IP address?
"The wireless router was connected to the company server only for the purpose of getting me online through Airport because I couldn't access it using an ethernet connection"
Could not access it because their network security blocked you by intent, or had some unknown technical difficulty?
Unless you are blocked by intent or ommission (if they have to explicitly allow your machine) I can think of no technical reason why your wired connection should not both get you on their network and on the internet in general. You should not need to be dual homed (though dual homing should work as well).
Please answer the questions above when you can - I think solving the wired LAN issue will be easier if you are not being intentionally blocked.

  • How can i change my internet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Machine

My laptop is connected to my Airport Extreme on the third floor.
If i take my laptop to the first floor to my Time Machine, my connection is lost with Airport Extreme.
It looks very logical to me that my laptop will automatically be connected to my Time Machine.......
    But it does not......
What am i doing wrong..........has anybody an answer for me?
    Thanks in advance

  • Another slow internet connection via Airport Extreme wireless thread

Has anyone actually solved this mystery? The last substantial thread I came across regarding this subject ended with a solution using a dell wireless driver. That ended somewhere in December. Any solutions, tips?

I seem to have found a fix, thanks to Michael G. Noll (http://www.michael-noll.com/blog/2006/07/24/intel-imac-wireless-connection-slowd own-with-wpatkip/).
I switched to WAP Personal from WEP and my iMac is now able to connect via wifi from a router in another room, and at normal speeds! Thanks Mike! I hope it lasts. I also changed my routers channel and made it static instead of automatic, but I don't think this had anything to do with the fix (though it may have solved my MacBooks problem of dropping the connection for a second every minute or 2).
I still have the problem of having to manually select my network after start-up and wake-up, however. It does not turn on automatically.

  • Internet connectivity for wireless devices on homefusion

I am having an issue with my homefusion router.  I can connect my wireless device (smartphone, kindle, etc.) but I cannot get internet connectivity.  Anybody have any suggestions before I have to call support?
    Thanks

        Hi JLovell,
It's great that you're able to get devices connected to the HomeFusion. This means the device is broadcasting the service to you. By not being able to actually browse the web, this means that the service is being stopped by something else. We will need to verify the account is setup right on our end of the system (activation successful and right plan setup). Once that's done on our end, you can reboot and that's the only step that can be done on your end.

  • PPPoE  connection for airport!  please help!!!

please please if anyone can help me!
I have a 17` pb . i made an internet connection using PPPoE..... when i connect my cable directly the customer service told me to do the following; make a new location for network/ then in TCP/IP ip adress- 10.0.0.2 then subnet- 255.255.255.0 then router 10.0.0.38 in PPPoE section i have to put user name and password. well thats works fine.
the problem is when i connect my airport extreme i need to connect the cable to the WAN connection and then i need to put the details but i dont know how to do it!!! where should i put all the above? and where is the user name and password goes? anyway my powerbook is connected to the airport but there is no internet connection/
please can anyone help me????? please... i`ve been trying everything for a week already///

    Liav,
I had the same problem and just got it fixed last night. Here's what I have learned so far in dealing with this issue.
First, Duane's configuration tips are essential (Duane, you are my hero!). I don't know why this info doesn't come with the AEBS or why the guys at the "Genius Bar" don't know this.
Second, there's probably a cabling issue. My BellSouth DSL uses a fiber optic connection which goes from the wall to the computer (no DSL modem in between). This is essentially a hub. Just like you, Liav, I was getting the eternal "Looking for PPPoE Host" and no connection. The BellSouth tech guy finally figured it out. The connection between the wall-mounted hub and the WAN port of the AEBS needs to be a CROSSOVER cable, not an Ethernet cable (but you should have an Ethernet cable between the LAN port and any hardwired computer).
While I was talking with the tech guy I replaced the Ethernet cable between the wall and the AEBS with a crossover cable, and WHAM! I got an instant connection, powerful all over the house and on 2 floors at the lowest (automatic) transfer rate setting, no channel changes, nothing fancy. I'd be willing to bet that this might also solve some slow transfer rate problems in other setups as well.
Change to a crossover cable, do a hard reset on your AEBS and set it up as per Duane's instructions and I predict you will have no further problems.

  • My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet.  My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme.  Do I need the modem?

My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet.  My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme.  Do I need the modem?  Is the ethernet route less efficent that going throught the internet connection?  If I don't need the westel modem; how do I make the dsl conection to the pone port in the wall?  Thanks for help on this!

Ok, so are you saying that your Internet is or isn't working?  Does it work if you plug your computer directly into your computer and bypass the router (make sure you power cycle the modem when you do this)?  If it is working this way, then a new modem isn't going to solve a problem with your Internet not working.  If it is going slow (try running a speedtest) then you need to call your phone company to have them take a look at why your Internet is slow.  If it runs fine this way and then slows back down when you go back through your router there is something else going on.  Try unplugging both the modem and the router, let the modem fully sign back in and connect to the Internet, after it gets signed in, plug your router in, and then after it boots up fully, try running the speedtest again...See if that helps any?  Sometimes it's just an IP conflict that happens when the dynamic IP that is assigned by your Internet Service Provider changes and the change doesn't flow smoothly.

  • Why can't I no longer connect to the Internet via my AirPort Extreme Base?

I suddenly can no longer connect to the Internet through my AirPort Extreme. Everything was fine until this morning. My Base Station is connected to a DSL modem and then my computer connects to the Internet wirelessly through the Base Station. The center light is on in the Base Station. The left light flickers telling me there is wireless activity. I can still access my printer through the Base Station. But the right light is no longer flickering. I have rebooted everything several times. Does anyone have insight into this problem. This is the second time this has happened. For over a month I could not access the Internet through the Base Station, and then suddenly and arbitrarily it started working again. This morning it just stopped again.

I've had the same problem - mine started after I upgraded to 10.4.8 on my MacBook a week or so ago.
I can see other networks around my home and when I travel, but can only connect via ethernet cable (and my ISP is comcast - I thought the upgrade was supposed to help make connecting with comcast better).
My G3 has no problem connecting, so I don't think it's exactly a problem with my modem, or base station, or even comcast. I think it has something to do with my base station and upgrading to 10.4.8. Btw, dropping back to 10.4.6 hasn't helped.

  • Re : Apple TV doesn't connect to a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service using Airport Extreme

Hi, using Airport Extreme (Airport Utility version 6.3.2, Internet :DHCP, Router mode : Off (Bridge)) with a Wi-Fi Broadband Internet service. My Desktop (iMac), Macbook,iPhone,iPad join the Airport Extreme Wirelessi network (WPA/WPA2 Personal) easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. However, in case of Apple TV (2nd Generation Software : 6.0.2 (6646.81.1)), it connects the Airport Extreme W-Fi network easily but no Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options. Even using the Ethernet connection of the said Wi-Fi Broadband Internet Service directly to the Apple TV, no internet network connects. Please help.

There is no way you can handle login details with the ATV and there is probably no way you can do it with extreme in router mode either.. If you need to use a login name and password via a html screen then that is impossible in a device without html.
But your newest addition confuses me.
A slight correction in the question : the Broadband Internet Service isn't Wireless, but having Ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme.
So how do your iphones pop up a login page.
easily and Broadband ISP Login-page pops up with username & password options.
The alternative method is to use a computer .. login to your service and use ICS through the computer to the ATV..
    See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jJe_BkQMRc
Or any site that shows how to route internet through a computer.

  • Connection To Airport Extreme Good, But It No Longer Sees Internet?

I have my airport extreme daisy chained to my verizon wireless router with an Ethernet cable, and this has worked great until now. My verizon wireless router is still working and connected to the Internet, but my airport extreme no longer sees the Internet yet I am still able to connect to it with my Mac book.

When I connect wireless to the AE it shows a connection to it, but I am unable to access the Internet. When I connect wireless to my primary router I am able to access the Internet.
This is why I believe the AE is not connected to the Internet.
I tried the unplug for 15 minutes and plug it back in with no luck. I do have a green light on, I am showing a connection to it from the Mac book, but still no email no web surfing, no Internet. If I unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the AE and connect it directly to my Mac book Internet works just fine. So the feed is good, but no wireless Internet coming from the AE.

  • Old ibook connected to Airport extreme on Intel iMac looses internet.

For the third time in a year since I got my new iMac Intel Core Duo machine the wireless connection between it and my old 2001 ibook (with and external USB --afterthemac.com) wireless device has lost the internet connection for the ibook. I am using the iMac as a airport base station with my iBook and it has worked flawlessly for most of the time since Feb when I got my new iBook but this is now the third time (for no apparent obvious reason to me) that while the System Preferences for the USB wireless device show a 70-75 strength connection via airport my internet (entourage email, safari browser) and wireless printing are all dead.
The last two times it happened I did a permissions fix on the iBook (nothing happened) and then reinstalled the driver for the USB wireless dongle. And I got the internet and printing through the printer on my iMac back. This did not work this time. I am set to Automatic in my Network preferences and am using use DCHP and have an ip address and such that are dynamically assigned. -- that still shows.
I have also rebooted my iMac, stopped and restarted airport on my iMac "base station" (afer a minute) and still no internet but the system preferences still show a wireless connection. I have run out of ideas to connect and wonder what else I a missing but some sites I have looked talk about the mysterious loss of inernet (while wireless appears to be working fine).
What is really weird is I also tested a Zen-Cart-MySQL server running on my localnet of my iMac and I actually got a connection of sorts by my ibook (once) today. It displayed the text portion of my Zen-Cart test screen but no graphics -- did not work next time. So it appears I almost have a connection of sorts with my iMac from my iBook but definately not an internet connection.
One final note, my new Intel iMac is connected to my cable modem via an old Netgear router (which is working fine for the iMac). I do not suspect there is any reason for this to be the problem since the ibook is using the shared connection of the iMac. But thought I would mention.
The ibook as I mentioned is the old 2001 dual USB model (white) it has only about 400 MB ram, a 10GB HD (but works great for email and web browsing for my wife). It has OS X 10.4.4, I have not bothered upgrading it any further because the HD has only about 2 GB of space free and other than this now third time of losing the internet connection it has worked fine and I hate to mess up this email/web machine my wife uses.
So if anyone has ideas of where I can go next to troubleshoot I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

    [email protected]

Ok appears I solved my problem but not sure why.
While I was posting this around I stumbled on a solution so my question is why. I read somehwere about rebooting the router even thoug it is connected to the iMac and my internet works fine there. Well I rebooted that and the internet for my ibook came back instantly. So since the ibook is sharing the imac connection to my cable modem via rouer using the airport on the iMac why would the router block my iBook and not iMac that is directly wired to the old router (it is not a wireless router)
I want to learn why this now works so I can deal with it more effectively in future.
    Thanks,

    Rufus Cat-
Even if it was compatible, AirPrint does not work through a USB link, only Ethernet or WiFi.
I do not see your HP 4500 listed on Apple's list of AirPrint compatible printers.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>  Therefore you need to take another approach.  To start, I suggest you download the free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz.  It has limitations, but should get you printing with your existing setup.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share and PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
Your best option may be to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs that are reported to do that well are Printopia and FingerPrint.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>
