Help not Helping!

The Help tool on my MacBook is having problems. When I search for anything using Help in the menu bar, the search window opens but the spinning beachball appears and for over 30 seconds nothing happens until I get a timeout in a small window with a message saying "Connection Failed - The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again". The correct help information then appears.
I have tried trashing the following preferences :
com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpviewer.plist
and also trashed com.apple.helpui from the Caches folder
I think it is a network problem as if I go to Terminal and ping the Apple server employed by Help Viewer I get 100% packet loss

I don't have any other network problems so am not sure what is wrong here?
Any ideas (this is a new MB, I migrated from a PB where I had a similar issue and think I have imported a rogue setting/pref)?

I'm having the exact same issue! Did you figure out the cause for your situation?
Prior to today I changed a h/d on another Mac on my LAN which I usually have mounted most of the time. I repurposed that h/d and so the name of that drive is no on my LAN anymore. Instead I have a new h/d with a different name. Then whenever I tried to bring up the Help Viewer it would display a popup dialog saying that that particular drive (the one I removed) could not be found. What is odd is I have no idea what that drive had to do with my local MacBook Pro's Mac OSX 10.5.5 Help Viewer trying to run. If I clicked on that dialog's OK button it would reappear a few seconds later. If I clicked on it about 15x it eventuallly went away and the help viewer worked fine.
Today it started displaying the dialog you mention... "Connection failed - The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again." My internet access is working fine for my web browser. My email access for Mail app is fine.
I have no idea what "server" it refers to, where that server lives, or how do I fix this problem. I have done searches on the Apple support site and come up with nothing. I don't have a clue what has gone wrong. What server is this app talking to? Is it going out on the internet to the Apple site and if so, why doesn't the Help Viewer able to talk to it when the web browser and email works fine???

I went to download adobe flash player and your website said I had it intergrated into 8.1 and that it was either disabled, not the right version or that active X filters needed to be clear. I followed all instructions. Flash was installed with the 8.1 64 bit version. Flash was enabled for all websites and I cleared the active X filter and I still get told that I don't have install flash because it is intergrated and but it does not work.     Your problems aren't with Adobe or Flash Player. They're with Internet explorer 11 and Microsoft.
    IE11 (Windows 7, 8 & 8.1) has been an abomination since its release October 18, 2013. Yahoo, Facebook, BBC, ESPN and dozens of other sites and domains have had trouble recognizing the Browser. If the site doesn't recognize the browser, it won't recognize any plugins in the browser, including Flash Player. Microsoft was made aware of the problems by millions of users within hours of the release, and so far they've shown no sign that they intend to fix it anytime soon. Their recommendation is to enable Compatibility View for affected pages. Two problems with that are that it's had only limited success, and you must enable it manually for each affected page. Basically, they're telling you to "pretend" you're not using IE11.
    I'm not big on "pretending", and I recommend actually using something different. Something that works where IE11 won't.
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Chrome (from Google)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Opera (from Opera)
    ANY of those will work where IE isn't recognized, and they use the Flash Player Plug-in (for other browsers), except for Chrome, which has its own plugin embedded in by Google.

  • Mac Help not Helping

    Hi
    Im running OS X Tiger 10.4.2
    Tiger came as an update DVD in the box along with my Mac Mini and I have since performed an "erase and install" version of tiger. When I load mac help nothing works. When I type spotlight or dashboard for example, the little cog will spin and do nothing. The links don't work either.
    Anybody have a clue what's wrong!?

    Try the following:
    In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
    1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
    3. Empty the Trash and Restart.
    Also, be sure you have an active internet connection when using Help because many help files have to be downloaded, they are not available locally.

  • Problems installing CS4, Adobe help not helping, can't find solution in forums

    When I try to install CS4 (on Windows Vista machine), I get the error "Uninstall Color Profiles Rollback Preventing the Installation".  Offered two solutions, I did both, but wouldn't allow me to cut/paste 10 files from the system32/spool/drivers/color folder.  I tried to go into the registry, it said, "some permissions could not be changed".  On the forums, it said some files could be linked to monitor or printers...I don't have a printer installed currently, but what am I supposed to do for a monitor?  I'm guessing they are not allowing me to move them because they are in use, but I don't know how to "unuse" them without not using the monitor.  I tried safe mode, didn't work...any suggestions?

  • PS CS5 Help Not Helpful!

    Is there an option that allows the old style help with an index that made it relatively easy finding help topics. The new help in PS CS5 makes it a struggle to locate help topics. Why can't there be a search feature and an index? Isn't help suppose to be helpful?

    FYI: The Adobe Help TOC is not on  every Help topic page, but can be accessed in these 4 ways:
    -Help  package title in breadcrumb
    -Home link in breadcrumb
    -Product  title in banner
    -CHC "Home" icon in app chrome
    You're right that updates in both AIR 2.0 and Community Help AIR app 3.3 will address the PDF preview issue. Also included is a bug fix related to the Display Local Content only  preference. Please accept the auto updates to these versions. In the meantime, here's how you can download the PS CS5 Help PDF today without having to install Reader:
    Use your browser to download the PDF.
    On any PS help page viewed in the Community Help AIR app, click the url in the upper right corner of UI to open the same page in your browser. From there you can download the PDF to your HD by clicking on the "View Help PDF" link on upper right corner of page. That local PDF can then be opened in Preview if that is your preferred PDF viewer.

    What is your platform, OS, and version of FH?
    There's always the possibility that another application is
    interfering. If
    you boot without extensions, you might see a difference.

    Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

    The only way to reinstall Safari on a Mac running v10.7 Lion is to restore OS X using OS X Recovery
    Instead of restoring OS X in order to reinstall Safari, try troubleshooting extensions.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
    If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
    Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
    If it's not an extension or plug-in issue, delete the cache.
    Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
    Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

    Open Sysem Preferences from your Apple () menu top left in your screen then select the Firewall tab.
    Make sure the Firewall is turned off.

    Then stop trying to use HomeShare and use one of the other options listed in the document from which your question was posted.

    If you can't sign in, then you can't troubleshoot and/or pair the keyboard until after that........ so, for that, you will need to borrow someone's USB wired keyboard in order to get signed in and to the Keyboard Bluetooth Preferences.

    Switched to iPhone 5 on July 31st.  Since then our data usage has doubled.  Verizon will not help find out what the problem could be, they claim they are unaware of a problem.  I told them to look on the customer support page and many have complained about the problem.  Now on the apple site I see it may be an apple problem.  Some one needs to fix this.  Apple you want us to use your products, please do t make it cost us more money just to do what we did prior without problems.  Prior phones were iPhone 4 and we never had issues and never went over 8 gb's for 4 phones.  Now we are doing 14.  Can anyone tell me what is going on.  Getting ready to stop using cell phones all together.

    Well you could Restore it from your backup and see if that helps. If it doesn't Restore it as new and manually add things back until the problem starts again.
    I would also suggest trying a different SIM.
    Without iOS 7 there is no way to isolate what is using the data.
