Help - not sure how to proceed
Hi all - newbie here, so please be kind.
I have a late 2010 15" MacBook Pro that shipped with Snow Leopard. I upgraded to Lion last summer and have had nothing but problems ever since. Two nights ago, my system came to a screeching halt - everything froze up and I had to power down manually to shut it down. When I restarted, it hung at the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning globe/wheel. I restarted from Recovery HD and ran Disk Utility to repair the disk and permissions. I was able to do that successfully, but it still wouldn't boot up. I tried every step I could find online (reset PRAM, etc.) but nothing has helped. I finally tried to reinstall Lion from Recovery HD, but even that failed - it goes through the motions but ends with the message "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." Wondering if this is because it originally shipped with Snow Leopard, not Lion?
I have been using Time Machine, so I do have a current backup - however, I'm not sure exactly what path to take. Do I use Recovery HD to restore the entire system from Time Machine? Or should I use the original Snow Leopard install DVD (which I have) to reinstall the original OS and then restore everything from within Time Machine (assuming reinstalling the OS makes it possible to use Time Machine)? I'm concerned that doing a complete backup from Time Machine might corrupt the backup disk or something - not sure that's a realistic fear, but if that happened, I'd really be hosed.
I'm thouroughly confused - any help is very much appreciated.

Well, I'm pleased to report that I was able to restore my system using a very recent Time Machine backup. I used the original install disk that shipped with the Mac to boot up, then followed the prompts to restore from a Time Machine backup. It took a few hours, but when it completed, everything was exactly as it was just prior to the crash (3 hours before, or so). I had no problem with losing any additional backups - my Time Machine disk still includes backups for the past 6 months or so and seems to be fully functional.
I'll be doing some additional tests/troubleshooting to see if I can pinpoint what caused the crash, but wanted to let anyone who was having similar problems how I was able to resolve it.

I have had my I-Book for a year and a half, but over the last few months I have definitely noticed some problems. The laptop is louder in general then it ever has been. Where I am guessing the hard drive is located is always making weird whizzing noises when I do anything, and even sometimes when it is idle. When I use the touchpad it makes a little buzzing/clicking noises. In addition I feel like the computer gets really warm, the fans come on what I consider to be too often and the left corner of the computer gets hot to the touch. However not sure what the normal temp is (using an i-stat widget, but having nothing to compare it to) Also seems slower? I brought my I-Book into the Apple store, and the mac-pro told me it was fine, however I am the person who uses it everyday and definitely still have these problems...I mean it is noticeably loud. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am fairly concerned over the noises...
That's the RAM. OK. At least you have what you thought you had. Nothing disappeared!
I see three avenues for dealing with excessive program-demand for RAM:
1) When you aren't using a program anymore, make sure you actually quit the program (ie Program Name > Quit) rather than just closing or hiding their windows. Unlike the Microsoft Windows operating system, in Mac OS most programs stay running after you close their windows. And they still use memory that way. So do a Program Name > Quit when you are done with a program.
2) Don't run any dashboard widgets until we get this pageout problem under control. Some widgets are really ill-behaved and are black holes for memory.
3) Upgrade your iBook to at least 1024 Meg of RAM memory.
Any or all of these approaches will help take the load off your hard drive.
Given the heat and noise you are reporting, if you don't do at least some of these measures, your hard drive is going to die prematurely. -
I have read some posts about changing the permissions in the iTunes folder, but not quite sure I understand. Which files should be granted read and write access? Am I in danger of doing further damage to my iTunes folder?
Okay i just figured this out and am willing to help. In finder, go to your Itunes media folder, wherever it is located, there are several files in it, (music, movies, podcasts, mobile aplications, ect...) you should find a folder that is labeled "downloads", right click it and choose "get info". at the bottom of the popup window, theres a section labeled "sharing and permissions" expand it. make sure all the users there read "read & write" close the popup window and make sure it saves. you should have no more problems. If the problem still persists, make sure the folders that are before the "downloads" folder have permission as well. If it STILL persists, exit itunes, delete the "downloads" folder, and restart itunes. Hope I helped!

Photoshop Elements 11 not sure how to proceed
I just bought Elements 11 this morning, but the installation instructions are confusing. The book says to install with disc, insert the DVD and follow instructions, and to locate the serial number on the back of the DVD case. If there is one there I cannot find it. Then it says Note: If you bought this product from Best Buy, use the redemption code to generate your serial number online. I bought mine at Staples. However, there was a black card inside the box that says Serial number retrieval and tells how to get it online. Am I supposed to do that even though I didn't buy it at Best Buy? If not where oh where is my serial number? Thanks.

I cannot activate LR5 and find 2 hosts file in html. not sure how to proceed from now

Contacted help desk and found the info on the site but i ma supposed to copy the hosts file and remove reference to adobe activation. issue is that i see two host file but in html format. how am i supposed to do this? sorry, am not a techy.What operating system are you on?

Or get in contact with the support of the Operating system and ask them to guide on getting the Host file restored.
It is a System Related file, they should be able to assist you in restoring it to default. -
My iPad only has a blank screen. If you press the two buttons to try to get it to restart all you get is a faint light for al few seconds and then it goes back to a black screen. I did try to restore by hooking up to my mac, but I still have nothing.
First thing to try is a reboot of your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
Hold those buttons a long time before letting them go. Also it might be best to leave the iPad on the charger overnight before resetting it.
If this doesn't work, it's time to make an appointment at an Apple store for a Consultation. -
My iPhoto app was digressed back to 9.5, not sure how I did it. I went to time machine and restored. Now it wont accept my password. tells me it is locked. Can anyone help me?
Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility and see if that helps.
If not, you can select the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder, go File > Get Info (or Command-i), go to the bottom of the info window and set your permissions to Read & Write. On the Action menu at the bottom (the one with the gear) choose Apply to enclosed items... -
Can anyone help me figure out how to sync my ipod with my purchased music? I have used several computer and at one point synced my ipod with a computer that only had about half of my music. My other computers are no longer working. Not sure how to get my purchased music back onto my ipod?

Your previous purchases are saved on iCloud even if you bought them on another computer. If you can't find them on your current computer, you might need to unhide them. Go to iTunes preferences, and click on Store Preferences. Then click the box for "show iTunes in the Cloud purchases". Then click on OK, and everything you've ever bought from iTunes on that Apple ID will show up in your library. You will need to download them from iCloud first before you can synch them to your iPod Classic. To do this, click on the little cloud with the arrow in it next to your song, and it will download to your computer. When you have the music that you want downloaded, plug in your iPod and synch away. Hope this helps!

I updated to OS X 10.9.2 and turned on Calendar sync in iCloud, now my calendar is unavailable and shows "moving calendars to server account" for 3 days. Not sure how to reset or access calendar. I can only force quit the app and when I restart it, it goes right to the same message. I have also tried turning off the sync in iCloud to no avail. Please help. I need my calendar!

HELP! I subscribed to imatch on my mac so that I could access the songs anywhere with my iphone. However since I live in a rural community I would like to make playlists that always stay on my phone in case I don't have service. Not sure how.
