HELP  Old iBook and airport

I have an old (500 MHz PowerPC G3; 384 MB SDRAM) that can only go as far as OS 10.4.11. I use verizon dsl router/modem with airport capabilities to connect to the internet. My other computer is an iMac running 10.6.4. I've never had a problem connecting the iMac with airport using the verizon Actiontek GT704-WG and until last month did not have a problem connecting my lil old iBook the same way (using WEP). Now I can no longer connect my iBook with airport (iMac is fine). The verizon Mac "techs" are fairly clueless in dealing with older Macs.
Can't afford a new laptop.
Anyone know what I can do (use WPA?) as far as settings go. Is my processor/RAM/OS the prob? Can't think why as it was it working before but something outside of my equipment seems to have changed which now will not allow my iBook airport access.
Any suggestions?

Does the iBook work if you turn off encryption?
Does the iBook work with other wireless networks (such as coffee shops)?
Once in a great while an original AirPort Card fails. (It happened to me once.) If you could check it out with another network to make sure it is something in your home connection at fault, it would eliminate the possibility that the AirPort Card has failed.

My daughter is using old round airport at college. I set it up originally without password protection because my macbook was too new to recognize the old style airport. I have an old iBook and I understand I can use that to set the passsword. But I can't seem to figure out even using the  Airport admin how to establish a password.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

If it even has that built-in, you would configure it using Airport Utility. It would likely be in the Wireless configuration for first turning on security and then setting the required password. For Macs you should use WPA Personal if the option is present.

I don't believe the iOS7 update was the cause for your issue. I have three devices all updated and they all show the Import To drop menu in Image Capture as shown below.

  • Old iBook with airport card

    Hi,
I have a little problem and am an absolute novice in this field. I have a network set up at home with a Netgear router and 3 x G3/300 happily
    connected via wire.
My son got himself an old iBook (in very good knick...) and the thing is equipped with an airport card.
Can I connect the iBook to the Netgear router (the router has also wireless capabilities).
I have tried, but to no avail. The green pins in the control strip are all green,
and if I open the airport, the signal is very strong (but the status says "not available'.
Also, when I open the router settings on my G3, my router detects the wireless iBook, but still I cannot get on the web from the iBook.
oh... most importantly, the iBook is running os 9.2.2, and the other machines on the network are in mixed configuration (OS 9/X).
    Any suggestions??

try removing, then replacing the airport card in your comp

  • Macbook, ibook, and airport

    Hi,
I have an iBook G4 and I use Airport Express to get online. Plus I have another unit as a repeater or extender throughout the house.
I am going to buy a new Macbook in about 2 weeks. Will the Airport Express work w/ the Macbook or should I go w/ the Airport Extreme?
If I go w/ the Airport Extreme, will that work w/ my old iBook G4?

I am going to buy a new Macbook in about 2 weeks. Will the Airport Express work w/ the Macbook or should I go w/ the Airport Extreme?
The new MacBook will work with either base station.
If I go w/ the Airport Extreme, will that work w/ my old iBook G4?
Yes, the iBook will work with either as well.

  • Old iBook and dsl settings

I have a very old iBook that I have not used for years.  I'd like to load updates, but dial-up would be way too slow.  I have a dsl modem, but do not know what the settings are for an ethernet connection, or, once the settings are changed, how to connect.  Can anyone help?

A SuperDrive was not available as BTO on an iBook G3. They were just too slow. Although MCE Technologies would retrofit a SuperDrive on an iBook G3, I would advise against it. Results would be abysmal.
The last best 14-inch iBook G4 came with a SuperDrive standard, but it was the only iBook that did.

The previous 14-inch model (G4, 1.33 GHz) did have the option of a SuperDrive.

  • My old ibook and new mac book pro

Hi, Hope someone can solve my problem. Thanks!
I had a ibook G4 which just dead already, cannot start-up, but the hard disk can be take out from my ibook and the data is still in the hard disk.
If I buy a new mac book, How can I transfer my ibook data, setting, itune account, etc. to my new mac book? but the ibook cannot start-up anymore. How can i solve it ?

Even if your old Mac cannot start up it still may work in target disk mode. (Start up holding the T key down) If it does connect it to your new Mac using a firewire cable the new Mac will then see the old one as an external disk and Apple's utility will do the job. If target disk mode will not work get an external case for the hard drive and it will become an external drive (I got mine from Macsales) Be sure you get the correct kind. A case for serial ATA case won't work. A firewire case will work fine. A USB case may not need a power supply for the drive and will be slower.

  • Old PC and Airport network

I was just given an old PC, a Gateway 2000 (233mhz) running Windows 98. I have a wireless Airport network for my Macs and have a hub connected to the base station. I installed a DLink network card in the old Gateway and connected it to the network via the hub which is connected to the Airport base station.
In spite of the network card being functional, I cannot get a DHCP address from the Airport and I also cannot get connectivity if I assign a static address to the Gateway by using the Airport 10.x.x.x scheme.
I spoke to someone at DLink and they suggested that the problem was with Windows 98 and/or that the Airport Extreme base station is too fast for use with the Gateway. While it may be true that there's a compatibility problem with Windows 98, I don't think the speed of the machine has anything to do with it because I have a Mac running at 233 on the same network.
Any ideas of how to get around this? I really don't want to upgrade Windows on such an old PC. Thanks.

Is the DLink card a 802.11b or an 802.11g card, if 802.11b ensure that the AEBS is working in b/g or b mode.
Only Windows XP has native support for wireless networking.
Other versions of Windows do not have native support for wireless networking.
What this means is that, unlike Windows XP, you can not plug in a wireless adapter and expect Windows to recognise it and start working.
You will need to install some kind of software configuration utility that came with the adapter. Each manufacturer has their own software so as a result the process of using these utilities to connect a Windows (non-XP) computer to an Airport wireless network will be different and so no generic guide is available.
Having said that you may find the following information on things to watch for useful.

Hello fastuca. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Let's double-check your base stations' settings ...
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC).
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • HELP !– iBook and Sprite don't mix

I need some help. My daughter is home from college for the break and was working on a paper when shen dozed off and spilled some Sprite onto her iBook. Needless to say all is not well. At the advice of the techs at the local Genius bar I pulled out the RAM chip and keyboard and the Airport card and dryed everything the best I can. The laptop then sat for 2 days in order to get everything to dry inside. I put it together last night and got nothing. I am desperate for any suggestions or help on somehow recovering this iBook or finding her another inexpensive ne wor refurbished. I lost my job in November and any money i have is going to her tuition and books for next semester. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I have 2 weeks before she heads back to school. Thanks in advance

Check with your insurance company or the credit card company you used to purchase the computer (if you did) whether their insurance covers such accidents without affecting your deductable or your coverage. If not, this is a good lesson to never again allow food or drink near a computer. These repair shops may offer a less expensive solution:

  • Intermittent connection between iBook and Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a friend with an iBook set up with the Airport Extreme system, they also have a Denon stereo that it is playing through. However, when the music is playing, it keeps cutting out every 5-10 seconds and is intermittent. On other occasions, when the router & base station is left switched on, it plays fine. Does anyone have a reason for this intermittent playing, and a possible solution? Many thanks,

Check out this Apple article to see if it will help.

  • Indigo ibook and airport

I have an Indigo ibook that I won on ebay. The computer has been great. However, the airport stopped working. I took a look inside and discovered an "engineered" airport card. I unplugged it and plugged it back in but it still doesn't work and the computer doesn't recognize that there is an airport card installed. I purchased a working "original" airport card from ebay and installed it. However, this is not working either. Any ideas? Thanks

Airport Card: Watch the installation video at
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/html/ibook/ibook-apc.cip.mov.html
The airport barcode side has to be face up.
When you place the card in slot, you have to push it down so that it goes right to the bottom of the slot (not too gently)
From time to time there are RAM shields on Ebay (10$ with shipping)

  • Need step-by-step help for Azureus and AirPort Express

Absolutely clueless on NAT Error and setup with Azureus, AirPort Express and System Preferences Sharing. Done a search here and Google it. Don't understand a single one of them. Download is a miserable 1 - 3 Kb/s and upload is IMPOSSIBLE. Even I tried turning off firewall in System Preferences, the results are the same. Help.
    Thanks in advance.

You need to enable Port Mapping on the Express for the port you're using for BitTorrents. You can determine the port number in the Azureus preferences. To set up Port Mapping, open up the Express's configuration in Airport Admin Utility, click on the Port Mapping tab, and add an entry with your computer's IP address and the BitTorrent port number in both the public and private port number fields.

  • Problem connecting to public wifi hotspot using ibook and airport

    Hi
I have a brand new iBook G4, replacing an iBook G3. At home I use it to connect wirelessly or wired with my Netgear router. No problems.
Yesterday I tried to access a public, unsecured wifi hotspot in a local cafe. There were two other people there using the net, both using iBooks (high Mac density, it seems!).
Whatever I did, I simply couldn't connect. First, using the same Location I use at home (defined to only use Airport), I could see the named network, but when I selected it I got the 'could not connect' dialog. Retried, no luck.
I then created a new location, configured that to use Airport. Same problem.
I then created a new network name, and tried again. No luck. Using this last option, it actually asked me for a WEP password, even though the network was, in fact, unsecured, and the other users had not been asked this.
I do use WEP protection at home.
Any ideas?? I'd like to be mobile and networked, so I'd really like to fix this!

I presume that the iBook G3 worked fine at the location previously?
Some 802.11b access points require a firmware upgrade before 802.11g (Extreme) clients can connect.
Though 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b some older access points were developed before 802.11g and therefore are not in a position to allow the 802.11g clients to connect.
Note that you can attempt to persuade an Airport Extreme client to operate in 802.11b mode.
Hold down the control key [ctrl] when selecting the network from the menu.

  • Help with iBook and iCloud

    Hi!
I saved a PDF file to iCloud. Can I read this file in iBooks on my iPhone? I can't see it.
Or I have to use iTunes to move my PDF to iBooks only?

I don't think so. I was in error when i said " use iCloud to sync it to your iphone or ipad". I checked my PDF files on my iPad vs iPhone and even though I have the settings for iBook to sync collections, I found the books sync but not the PDF files. To test it I made a quick PDF file from a Pages document on my iPad and emailed it to myself. I opened the attachement on my iPad to iBooks PDF. Then I waited a few minutes and checked my PDF files on my iPhone. The newly created PDF was not there. I would have believed all files associated with iBooks would be synced since when I look at the categories of the syncing under the Settings app for iBooks it says "Sync Bookmarks, Sync Collections, Show All Purchases".
Then I made a Collection and added PDF files to it. This again was done on my iPad. I then checked my iPhone and the Collection file name I had created was there but no files were showing. So then I added a book to the same collection on my iPhone and checked that same collection on my iPad. Same result. Title of the collection shows but no book shows.
I don't have any problems of book purchase syncing to my iPad or iPhone but the Collection function does not cross devices. While this is somewhat frustrating it doesn't stop you from manually adding PDF files to your devices and reading them when you choose.
