Help on Network

Can anyone help me on set up an USB external drive on a network (sharing usb external disk)

You need an Airport Extreme Base Station to do that or you need to connect the drive to the computer and turn on File Sharing in the Sharing preferences. You can learn more by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching on the keyword "sharing" or "file sharing."

  • Need help creating network of 1 Airport Extreme & 2 Airport Expresses!

Please somebody help me! I've literally been trying to get our home network to function for months now. I'm seriously about to cry if i can't make it work.
    Here's the situation:
Our apartment is long and narrow and probably has lead paint, so our wifi, powered by a brand new Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n router (named Igor) connected to a comcast modem doesn't reach the whole house. So we got 2 Airport Expresses to place throughout the apartment (named Sven and Svetlana) to help boost the signal.
First i tried to set up Igor to 'Create a wireless network" with the option 'allow this network to be extended' and the connection sharing set to 'Share a public IP' and i set up Sven and Svetlana to 'extend a wireless network' and the connection sharing was set to 'share a public IP'. Everything else was automatic or default pretty much. I got it to work but the connection was really weak and dropped out a lot.
Then i tried setting up a WDS network. no luck there either. so i went to the apple store and they told me i had to hard wire them all together using ethernet cables (roaming network i guess) to compensate for the ****** network acoustics in our place.
So...i ran 1 ethernet cable from Igor down the hall to Svetlana and another from Igor further down the hall to Sven. I set up all 3 to 'create a wireless network' and gave them all the same network name and password. i left the 'allow this network to be extended' option unchecked on all 3 and put them all in bridge mode and automatic settings for the radio mode and channel selection. After about 50 restarts i finally got it to work. Things seemed great for a minute until i realized that my laptop was the only one in the house that could connect to the internet. When i tried to troubleshoot the problem using network diagnostics and restarts, i eventually got my roommate's laptop to work but then mine stopped working.
i've tried changing Igor's connection setting to share a public IP address and leaving Sven and Svetlana's in bridge mode. I've tried changing the 'configure IPv4' setting from 'using DHCP' to 'manual' and entering in identical info for all 3 in the TCP/IP section.
no matter what i do i still have no idea how to make this work for multiple devices in our apartment. I really don't understand that much about networking but i am great at following directions. Please please please please help me! I'm desperate.
thank you in advance for your help!
    ilana

In a "roaming" network, the router connected to the Internet modem should NOT be in bridge mode. In this case that would be your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). That is because you want it to provide both NAT & DHCP services to both AirPort Express Base Stations and the network clients.

  • Urgent Help with network access to FileOutputStream

URGENT HELP NEEDED GUYS...I am stuck on this past 2 days. I tried several alternatives but to vain.
I am trying to access a Folder on a user's computer which is lying in a different Domain.
For accessing this folder, I have the following information with me.
Domain name, PC name, folder name, windows username, windows password.
Note: This username and password will give me rights to read + write to that folder.
How to use these information to open a fileoutputstream ? Does the java.io package allow programs to pass a username, password , domainname, pcname and then the folder and filename to create/read/write files..
Pls. suggest code examples. Sometime back I posted this query but didnt get an answer to my satisfaction. I have tried at my end but unsuccessful yet. Help would be appreciated.
I am trying this on a Windows File System and Network domain
    THIS IS V. URGENT
    Thanks,

    Hi HJK,
I am referring to the last reply of yours.
" Hi, there are three approaches I can think of offhand:
    1) make sure the user-context under which you run the java app has the right to access the remote drive.
    2) Do the network connection in a batch or c program and call that at the start of your java app with Runtime#exec.
    3) Write some c/c++ code to open the connection and integrate that via JNI.
Let me know what (other) solution you came up with in the end!
    Regarding the 1st.
I am supposed to write a remote installation utility actually. There are around 200 PC(s) in a network on which I need to copy these java class files. My problem statement is such that at runtime I only have username, passwords, domain access. I am not supposed to map any drives. Its supposed to be done dynamically. No manual intervention required. :(
How do I do the network connection in a batch mode ? Let me know that?
If 2nd option can be done, probably I can think of action-3 at the moment I am quite blurr :(

Help required. I don't want to use NetworkManager.

    The following might be useful:
    https://access.redhat.com/solutions/783533
"When transitioning from NetworkManager to using the network initscript, the default gateway parameter in the interface's ifcfg file will be depicted as 'GATEWAY0'. In order for the ifcfg file to be compatible with the network initscript, this parameter must be renamed to 'GATEWAY'. This limitation will be addressed in an upcoming release of RHEL7."
NetworkManager is now the default mechanism for RHEL 7. Personally I don't quite understand this, because as far as I can gather it is a program for systems to automatically detect and connect to known networks. I think such functionality can be useful when switching between wireless and wired networks, but for a server platform, I wonder.

  • Help! Network Nightmare

Hi. I'm living in an old office building with a lot of other people. We have a cable modem in the basement which feeds ethernet to a router upstairs, and that router feeds two others. At any given moment the system might have as many as 8-10 users.
Very frequently, the internet quits working, and any combination of resetting modem, routers and computers won't get it going again, until poof, at some point we can connect again.
Our paltry knowledge of setting up a proper network is surely to blame. Can anyone suggest some solutions?

    hammondbeck,
First, you posted this the iPhone Internet and Networking section.
Second, are all of the routers doing NAT, if so that can cause some routing issues, but only for those connecting to the routers that are already behind a router.
Third, if you connect directly to the first router in the series, does it have any network utilities?
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • AirPort Help: Configuring "Network"

In attempting to install NetWare for the iPhone 3G (another story!), I must have inadvertently deleted all of the Network and Airport settings that had allowed me to use Airport alone to pick up an open signal/network in my neighborhood. I had no record of the numbers, which boxes to check in the TCP/IP, Proxies, port number, IP address, etc., prompts.
Could someone please provide this information. Thanks.

    b. wificonfig iwi0 connect airJet
    c. ifconfig iwi0 dhcp)
    2. Set up default route (route add default 192.168.100.2 (its my access point with dhcp server))
    Ping -s 192.168.100.2 -> done
But when I trying in Firefox open any url - recieve error "host not found"
    okay. in terminal i put
    ping google.com
    and recieve answer
    host not found
    What is my problem?
    Thanks for u answers.

Try changing hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to:
    hosts dns files
so that hostnames will be resolved via your dns servers. You also need to enter dns server info in /etc/resolv.conf.

  • When posting for Help on Network Magic Please Include

    Hi All,
When posting for help on these forums include:
Your Network Magic Version installed: 4.6.7324.0
The type of connection to the Internet, like DSL, Cable, or Verizon FIOS Internet Connection.
The Brand of Modem and its Model Number the router is connected to.
The Brand, Model, Hardware Revision of your Router and include the Firmware Version: D-Link DI-624 Rev. C Firmware 2.70
The Method of connection your problem computer has to the Router: Wired or Wireless.
The Connection in use on the problem computer: Ethernet Port is a PCI Adapter Card, A D-Link DWL-G520 Rev. B
Operating system and version and Service Pack Level, if any. Ex. Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 1
Software Firewall in use: McAfee Personal Firewall 9.0.136 Build
Also if any Anti-Virus Program or Spyware Program is actively protecting your computer. (Some Programs like Spybot does cause problems, not being able to go to specific sites.)
Include your location in the post or fill out your Profile for this forum and include the location. (Reason: Not all Routers from a given manufacturer are available everywhere.)
Post the link to your Router Model, if an off-brand Router or not found in the USA on the Manufacturer's USA's Website. (Why? Posters helping each other, aren't working for Pure Networks or Network Magic, so make it easier on the posters helping on.)
And any other information you think is important if answering your own post, and the nature of the problem, itself.
By posting all this information, you can hopefully get help from someone that has the same equipment that you have and theirs is working. Not everyone has the same equipment.

    mhchiang,
If you have multiple systems that all show the same symptoms,
then it is probably not a problem in the computers.
You may need to investigate the rest of your network hardware
    and your campus network software.
Your campus network administrators may have made some recent changes.
Ethernet switches may have power supply problems, or they're getting old.
Firewall software may heve had recent changes to its configuration.
If the cabling goes over long distances, from building to building,
there may be damage to wiring.

  • Help on network interruptions please

Our Sun Blade workstations have been experiencing network interruptions, resulting in unavailable internet service except intranet. PCs on the same network appear ok somehow. The interrupt lasts a few minutes occasionally. When it occurs, the on-campus workstation also becomes unaccessible from off-campus. The interrupts do not occur consistently from machine to machine. The network used to be okay. Any help is appreciated.

  • Will increasing my broadband speed help my Network Extender Perform Better?

Hello,  sorry if this isn't posted in the correct area.  I'm new to this community and couldn't find a Network Extender specific category.
Background: I live in a "low spot" and have shoddy phone service in my home.  As a result, I purchased a Network Extender about 1.5 years ago.
I've been limping along for some time with my 1.0 Mbps basic internet service but am now working from home frequently and taking calls though the day and if my internet is being used by anything else in the home (PC, iPad, Kindle - etc).  my calls either get really choppy or I drop the call.  Since I'm working from home computer based this is quite annoying and I'm finally to the point that I'm just going to get a home phone if I can't figure out.
Question:  If I increase my broadband internet speed to perhaps a 10 or 12 Mbps will this help with the strength of the Network Extender and prevent calls getting choppy and/or dropped?
Also, I should add that my current internet service is advertised as a 768 Kbps but speed tests say it's 1.0 Mbps.  Also - between my husband and I we've had several different phones on the extender and all are the same so I don't believe it's phone-device related.
Thanks in advance for any input, it's greatly appreciated!

Verizon says the minimum should be 1Mbps, so even though a speed test might show that you get that speed, going on a rated 768Kbps sounds a little risky, especially when there is any contention for internet.
I would also check prices.  What will it cost to upgrade the internet speed vs getting a landline (perhaps as part of a bundle)?  Of course, upgrading the speed might have other benefits unrelated to calls (once you surf at higher speeds it is very hard to go back).
Also, doesn't the network extender still  use your wireless minutes for calls?  If so, you might want to look into other VoIP vendors where you use a landline type phone that plugs directly into your connection. This will still probably need you to upgrade your speed to work well, but you may be able to reduce your wireless minutes to offset the cost of the upgrade and the VoIP vendor.

  • Need help with network

hi, i am trying to leave ubuntu, so i installed Arch Linux. it seems everything went allright on the CD installation, but i am having trouble with the network. i have a dell XPS M1330 with the intel 4965 card, and i believe that the card is recognized by the system.
i can scan for networks, and i can even connect to my network, and when i run "iwconfig" i can see all my network details, including the password, and th signal strenth, noise, etc.
so, everything indicates that i am succesfully connected to my network. but everytime i try a ping it fails misserably, with a host unknown. i've tried google, yahoo, msn... but it doesnt matter. they always fail.
    can anybody help me?
btw, i've checked that hostname is the same on rc.conf and hosts

    EDIT AFTER LAST TRY!!!!!
first of all, i have to say that even though the module is listed on rc.conf, everytime i start the computer i need to do a modprove iwl4965 for the network card to start working, then i have to do "ifconfig wlan0 up" and then is allright.
ok, tonight is the night!!!! lets get going

The broadcast flag is likely unneeded as a 255.255.255.0 netmask implies a 192.168.0.255 broadcast address. However, it's definitely worth a shot! I just wonder if, for some really really strange reason your router isn't using a 255.255.255.0 netmask. Can you try giving yourself a lower IP address? Try 192.168.0.2 this will guarantee that you are in the same subnet as your router.
    Try this!
according to my wife's computer and my mint install, our netmask is really 255.255.255.0
i will try those suggestions tonight and post the outcome here, but to begin, this is "route" on my mint install

  • Need Help - WiFi network issue

Hey, just wondering if anyone could help me out here. My problem is that when I go to the WiFi setting page my 'network list' costantly refreshes every 5 seconds or so. I can access my network normally, but upon doing so my network bar shows a check mark that it's connected and then...bang, all the networks disappear (including mine) and I lose my connection.
I've read through a lot of the comments and issues on this board but haven't seen anyone experiencing the exact same problems as mine.
Another interesting thing is I just tried out my Nintendo DS WiFi connection and had no problem connecting w/ it. If it helps I'm running Windows XP, my router is a Linksys ___GS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Oh ya and I've tried restoring my iPod and my newtwork shows full bars connection, so....

The first thing I would do is try a reset of the network settings on your IPT, just go to settings/general/reset/reset network settings. (that's assuming you have the latest 1.1.3 firmware and the software upgrade installed)
If that doesn't work then you may have to get a bit more drastic and check the Linksys site and see if there are any firmware updates. If there are update your router and then reset it and give the IPT another try and see if it will connect.
I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL with WAP2 security and I've had no problems connecting.

  • Help connect network printer to AP Express joined to an AP Extreme

I have an AP Extreme network that I have added a AP Express (joined not extended) and thought I could connect my HP LaserJet 2000TN via an ethernet cable to my AP express. But I can not find the printer when I try to print.
Both APs are n. The AP Extreme is connected to a cable modem via ethernet. The printer is in another room and floor level so thought this would be much easier than running an ethernet cable through the floor to the AP Extreme.
I think I need the printer IP address but not sure how to find that, but I kind of think it is more that that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hello mhilera. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) the only router in your network configuration? Do you have the HP printer connected directly to the AXn by USB or wirelessly with the printer's built-in wireless capability?

  • HELP! Network printing and installing HPIJS on iBook running 10.3.9

    Hi,
I have a home network built around Time Capsule. I have a secondary router which provides a wireless B/G network.
I have an old iBook running 10.3.9 which connects to the wireless B/G network.
I used to have an old HP PSC 750 connected via USB to the time capsule but it broke so I bought a new HP Photosmart C6380 which is connected via an ethernet cable to the time capsule.
I was able to use open printing drivers to allow the iBook to print to the old printer but I cannot get it to print to the new one.
Everything else on the network can print (including my iPhone).
I went back to open printing (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs), downloaded what I had to and tried to install it. Everything installs ok on the iBook.
The trouble is I cannot follow the setup instructions - "Printer Setup Utility (Panther), hold down the Option key, and click the Add Printer button in the Print Center toolbar. Within the setup sheet, choose Advanced from the top popup menu; then in the "Device:" popup menu select your printer by name (it should be the last item in the menu list). Finally, select the correct PPD from the model browser and click Add."
The printer shows up when I select rendezvous in the add printer section, but it cannot find the drivers and will not let me select the drivers.
When I follow the above instructions, the printer is not listed.
I have tried using IP printing (no luck), bluetooth printing (nothing), in fact everything from the pull down list.
I am sure I am missing a step somewhere. Should I first install the printer connected directly to the iBook via USB?
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Anthony

    Hello Penny
The Leopard Installer DVD is Dual-Layered. For lack of any further information it's possible the original installed Optical Drive on your eMac can't read from Dual-Layered DVDs? Yours may be the Combo Drive instead? Although your model meets the minimum RAM requirements you would benefit greatly if you upgraded to at least 1GB - preferably more. Do you have another Mac or access to someone who has?
    HTH?
    Tony
