How do I create multiple live USBs of Operating systems to boot from on one flashdrive?
I am attempting to create multiple live USBs within one flashdrive so that i can boot various operating systems without having to buy multiple USb sticks. I am using a Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Operating System currently. I am using the Terminal provided by the OS.
I would like to try Debian, Kali, Precise Puppy, and Sabayon- with one space left empty for whatever Linux OS I would like to try next. I have partitioned an 8GB flashdrive into the following sections:
name of intended OS,     space allocated for it:
    1)Debian ........................1.32 GB
    2)Kali..............................2.61GB
    3)Precise Puppy..............163.7MB
    4)Sabayon.......................1.77GB
    5)TBD..............................2.14GB
I have figured out how to change the .iso files of the operating systems into .img files with the following commands:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW /path/to/input.iso -o /path/to/output.img
a .img.dmg file is created, this is corrected in the next line of code *please note: I am a a very beginner at programming, and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!
    mv /path/to/output/file.img{.dmg,}
This is where I started to get confused:
I entered diskutil list to find the location of the partitions on my flashdrive, and this is the relevant section:
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *8.0 GB     disk1
       1:                 DOS_FAT_32 DEBIAN               1.3 GB     disk1s1
       2:                 DOS_FAT_32 KALI                    2.6 GB     disk1s2
       3:                 DOS_FAT_32 PRECISE            163.7 MB   disk1s3
       4:                 DOS_FAT_32 SABAYON           1.8 GB     disk1s5
       5:                 DOS_FAT_32 TBD                     2.1 GB     disk1s6
This is the code I attempted to use and the subsequent result:
    charles-burtons-mac-mini:~ charlesburton$ sudo dd if=/Users/charlesburton/Desktop/debian-live-7.2-i386-gnome-desktop.img of=/dev/disk1s1 bs=1m
    dd: /dev/disk1s1: Resource busy
*at this point I went to the Disk Utility GUi and unmounted only the DEBIAN partition, now back to the terminal*
    charles-burtons-mac-mini:~ charlesburton$ sudo dd if=/Users/charlesburton/Desktop/debian-live-7.2-i386-gnome-desktop.img of=/dev/disk1s1 bs=1m
    dd: /dev/disk1s1: end of device

I would like to know the answer to this as well.  I tried renaming the 3D version by adding 3D after it, but it still not a separate movie in iTunes.
It's putting them in the same folder.

during a update of apple my iphone 3GS crashed an now the operating system wont load up..ive tried to reset the phone to the factory settings using itunes it took 4 hours and completed but my phone still wont come on..what can i do to fix the problem? please help #

In trying to include what information all that I could I should have specified I DON'T KNOW THAT IT WAS DEFINATELY JAILBROKEN when I took it to the apple store they told me there's no way for them to tell if it was jail broken or not. I'm only going by what ppl have told me COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO THE PHONE. With that said the only thing I know for sure is that the apple tech at the Genius Bar told me that someone took control of my root menu in February & I've had no control of my phone since. I asked him how to regain control & how he knew his exact words were "oh that is out of our scope of capabilities here at this level & you would need an apple engineer to fix it". I said ok then how do I get an apple eng then? He laughed & said you can't!!!! To which I was furious I came home & called apple requesting to speak w/the fraud dept to file a report they said we don't have a fraud dept!! So after a 45 mn phone call again I left w/no answers.
    @TJBUSMC1973-
I DON'T HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND HIRING AN ATTORNEY & Although I appreciate your suggestion I fail to how an attorney would be able to facilitate in any way since there's no suspect. I cannot prove that it's him doing it so I certainly can't pursue legal action w/no proof & no money. :'((
Again I thank you for your advice but I don't think that will help.
I was looking more for a TECHNICAL way to avoid this happening w/a new phone should I buy one or trying to get them out of my phone now! Such as installing some kind of software protection?? Someway to clear out the entire phone (other than factory reset which was done 10 x's w/no success, etc. if this person got in then there HAS TO BE A WAY OF GETTING HIM OUT, right????

If you're going to make those sort of claims, then you should back it up with firm data...
The point is, someone in the forums already did. All the forum regulars should remember when it happened too. A guy chastized us because we ask about the specs on people's power supplies. He took every post in the VGA forum to date and catagorized the solutions and found that only 50% of the problems in the forums were Power Supply Related.  To me, if one out of every two problems in the VGA Forums is Power Supply Related, by asking the question, we can identify and solve 50% of the problems.
But we are used to people like yourself coming along every few months.  Are you sure you did not used to log into these forums under the username of elzie?
Is this one of your old Threads:
    A must read for everyone....
    Richard
Yes, he does sound a bit like me doesn't he? (or vice versa). But no, we are two different people which your moderators can prove by looking at the IP addresses of both myself and elzie.
But I must admit he echo's my views. There is a definite danger that some posters who are here to help people will latch on to one supposed "solution" i.e. the PSU which is then tailored to fit all problems. Same goes for avoiding flashing the VGA BIOS especially over the Internet.
But as I've said before, 98% of system problems are software related and hardware only plays a minor role. It's a bit like a car. Without gas, you're not going anywhere regardless of all the technology that's been pumped into it. But gas can get contaminated with grit and can clog up fuel lines. So what should we do then? Change the whole car maybe? Or just replace the carburetor? After all, we don't want to risk damaging the machine by cleaning it do we?
There's just too much emphasis these days on blaming the product as the cause of the problem and replacing parts rather than taking the view that it's the user who has caused the problem himself by not following instructions when installing software. Statistics can be adapted to suit the issue too. But as I've already said, if the PSU was the main cause of failure of high end cards, the Internet would be literally littered with news about it. But there aren't any such articles, so how do you explain that?? And as Toms Hardware.com mentions here, the CPU and high end card can draw 160 watts. So it stands to reason that if you've got a 300W PSU, you've got more than enough over to run both doesn't it??
It's all very convenient to say, "replace the PSU and your troubles will be over", but if the problem persists after doing that, it won't do MSI reputation any good and the only benefit will be that a PSU manufacturer will have made a little extra profit this year.

  • System wont boot up

    I have the following pc
    Leadtek 9800 GX
    MSI P45-Neo3 FR mobo
    Corsair CMPSU-450VX
    the others don't matter.
Now, the system wont boot up if I dont do the following
1 - Shut down the PSU, remove power cable, remove battery. Push the power button a couple of times. Plug the power cable in, put the battery back (or just leave it out), power on the PSU and start the pc.
    or
2 - Change the fsb jumper back and forth (at which point the system behaves as if I have removed the power cable and stuff at point 1).
If I don't do this the fan on the video card wont stop screaming and the monitor wont get any image (the card has 2 lights, one besides each dvi output. when I do 1 or 2, the lower one, where I plug my monitor, will go blue, the other one stay green).
Any ideas? The video card is ok, proc and psu aswell (since it "requires" a "fresh-bios" to boot up).. I'm lost.

My bad, forgot to mention the cpu
Pulled everything out, non-static surface. Tried with cpu, gpu + 1 memory and it works. Added the second memory, still works. Plugged in the sound card.. it works.
So, is there a short-circuit in the case? If so, how do I solve the problem without changing or modifying the case (its and antec 9000) ?
P.S. - I left all the cables case-mobo (power, reset, usb, audio, etc) so theyre not a problem.

    Edit
Effin twilight zone I swear. Put everything back the way it was before and... it works. It freaking works. Well.. I get a BSOD but at least it works :D Any explanation?

    Hi,
Regarding the issue here, please restart the computer and press F8 until you see the
advanced boot options, select start windows normally,
if it starts with no problem, please check if you have the option boot from safe mode checked:
    run->type msconfig->tab boot->boot options, check if the
safe boot is selected, if yes please uncheck it. Then restart the computer to check if this problem still exists.
If the system needs repair, please take a look into the below WIKI article, and check the event viewer to see if any errors for further troubleshooting.:

  • System wont boot after flash

i flashed the bios the first time to upgrade to 3.6 but noticed the temps issue and wanted to revert to 3.5, now here started the problem. i downloaded the zip file from msi site, read the instructions file and since i couldnt made a boot disk for windows xp pro (tried the "make a dos startup disk" but the system wouldnt boot from it) i used the flash utility that came with live update 3. im now sure this was the biggest mistake i had ever done: i choose the A6728IMS.350 file as ROM file and it started the flash in windows (had no programs running)
after reboot the system wouldnt start
i looked at the D-Bracket and was surprised to see that it was hanging on Memory Detection Test ! so i cant use the flash recovery feature cause it wont even initialize the keyboard
any chance of recover or i can say bye bye to my bios?
P4 2.80c Ghz HT enabled no OC
MSI 865PE P series (the one with GLan, not sure of exact model)
1 Gb Kingston 400 Dual DDR (2X512 module)
    Ati Radeon 9800 Pro
    Be-Quiet 400 W active PFC S1.3 PSU

have you tried to do the bios recovery ?
i had this same issue when i flashed the bios when i first got this mobo.
its basically bullshit on the part of MSI,  you cant flash from a floppy, it wont let you, you have to have the bios on a hard drive.
the problem with that is, that it only works for a FAT16 or FAT32 hard drive since you have to do it thru dos.
i mean is MSI thinking, how many peple with Windows XP still have FAT hard drives., luckily i do. otherwise.  ggrrr.
and you cant make a start up disk ? thats pretty wierd, format the floppy and choose Copy System Files  this will make it bootable.
just put the bios file you want on a regular floppy, i dont think i made mine bootable, and hold the "Bios Recovery" button,, sorry i cant recall what it is.
and i will use whatever bios you have on the floppy.
but please be sure to read the bios recovery tutorial.
i tried to flash with on of the bios's 3 times and it still wouldnt work, i had to keep going back to the original bios.
the latest bios flashes fine so i dont know i think there is something seriously wrong with the bios from ,, i think it was Aug, or Nov.
also have you tried moving the jumper on the motherboard ??? and starting the machine ?  this will change all bios settings to default, and could help you.

  • "Missing Operating System" on boot?

My Windows side was working perfectly until very recently, where it now displays a "Missing Operating System" error in the BIOS when I start it up.
I have tried to use EASEUS File Recovery to no avail and it detects the wrong files; OS X also displays the wrong files in my Windows Drive (it appears as if it was a fresh install of Windows). The Windows 7 install DVD does not recognize my OS as being there and I have no idea what to do.
Any help or suggestions? Or do I need to format my drive and lose all my years school work? (I didn't backup Windows only OS X with Time Machine)
    Thanks

In fact I've already tried with Ext3 and exFAT, but it didn't work. Even only erasing without creating a new partition doesn't work.
I already have the driver for read/write on NTFS
    The hatter wrote:
You moved Windows to higher number.
Okay , but I just want to remove the partition to a lower one, so He can see the OS, without having to reinstall the whole thing, is it possible ?

  • Operating system wont load

i believe that i may have turned off the power switch on the wall that feeds electricity to everything in my room, while my computer was running pro tools. Now when i turn on the computer, my operating system does not load and it does not ask for my password. All i see is a blank blue screen, but my mouse is being recognized. I hope my files are not lost. What do i do to restore my OS(tiger) without losing all the files on my computer?

Hi, B. G. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the process specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This is a good procedure to run after a power failure.
    2. A blue screen at startup can also indicate a problematic Startup or Login item. If step 1 above does not resolve the issue, my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is exacerbating the problem.
    Good luck!

  • System wont boot after restart, hangs..

    Hello.
Recently i have got a strange problem.
When i restart or power on my computer without using the "main power switch on psu" my system hangs either just before cpu post or memory post.
If i turn it off  and on again using the switch on the psu it boots just fine..
I have searched alot around the internet and tried many things. Tried disconnenting devices, resetting cmos, disconnect everything from mobo and resetting cmos, tried new bios, tested my ram sticks in memtest and so on..
The funny thing is that this problem suddenly occured. My system worked fine until 2 weeks ago.
Also it have happened that it freezes in windows, screen freezes and computer stops responding. But usually in have run for 2-4 days before that happens.
It would be very much appreciated if someone could help me out with this
    My specs:
    Msi k8n neo2 platinum 54g
    Amd 64 3200 winchester
    4 * 512mb 3200 ocz ram
    Mist 430w psu
    4* 200gb maxtor s-ata
    card reader
    dvd-rw
    ati x800xl
    + alot of silent fans

    Ok, now i am confused.
I have discussed this problem with other people in a norwegian forum. They guess that it is the motherboard which is causing this problem.
I also think that. Because system have worked perfect until recently. As  i said earlier i have tried to disable some hardware to see how that worked and it was the same.
Now when system i booted it is 100% stable. The freezes that occured in windows was software related.
Also discovered that if i load windows in fail safe mode problem is gone! Have not been able to figure that one out.
    Almost getting depressed here.
    Comments? Tips?

  • Upgrading Operating System in Boot Camp Partition

I am currently running Windows XP in my Boot Camp partition. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out in October. Can I so this with the upgrade version of Windows 7 without removing the Boot Camp partition? I understand that you can't install an upgrade version of an operating system when you create a boot camp partition, but I'm wondering if you can do so if you are upgrading an existing operating system?

Only Vista, and you would need NTFS and do clean install.

  • Operative system not booting (spinning wheel on blue screen forever)

    Hello,
I've replaced the standard hard drive of my (late 2009) MBP with a Seagate Momentus XT 750, this is an hybrid ssd hard drive.
Lately I've seen that the system started to slow down and spotlight started to rebuild its index.
After the indexing I've decided to reboot  and I've got stuck with a spinning wheel on a blue screen at system startup time.
I've changed the hard disk and replaced it with the original one that still has the original installation and it works!
The weird thing is that if I connect the Seagate Momentus to an usb port using an adapter it also works! I can read all its files with no problem, so I tough the problem might be some damaged block in the part of the disk containing the operative system.
I've launched the Disk Utily app and I've tried to repair the disk and the permissions several times but it still doesn't boot the system.
    Any idea?

    Try a PRAM reset...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    and/or an SMC reset...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Failing this, start up from your Install DVD and run Disc Utility to repair/verify the permissions and the drive itself.

  • Nexus 5500 "Mezz not found" error, system wont boot

Rebooted N5548UP after software upgrade didn't go as planned and now it wont boot up stating mezz not found.    Attempting to get console access to boot the kickstart and load the image again but looking for direction if that doesn't work and what the mezz not found points to ??
A software upgrade attempt from 5.1.3 to 5.2.1 broke fiber channel connectivity so a reboot to revert back to original 5.1.3 was what got us stuck with a broken reboot for FYI.
    dave

We had the same problem on a Notebook G71.  If you can get to the BIOS, do a RAM and a Hard Drive test.  Our Hard DRive test failed and we had to get a new hard drive.  When we took the new hard drive through the Recovery phase, we still got a device missing error, not the same one as before though.  We started the process over several times and finally it found what it was looking for and is working fine now.
Search these forums, you will find a lot of good advice.  I did.

  • [Athlon64] Strange problem...garbled screen...system wont boot...please help!

    Hi,
Thanks for reading my call for advise...
My system ran fine for about 10 months now. Since 1 week in 3D games I experienced some artifacts. A few days later artifacts appeared while playing movies in more than 100% of their original size. I did a winxp system restore... This seemed to be helpful for about two days.
    Yesterday I booted my system....
Immediately my screen fills with strange blinking characters and lots of color. It looks like a &$%$^ fractal when my systems stops responding.
Only the top right corner is still readable. It shows the bios logo. There's nothing I can do. I can't go in the Bios-menu. My JLed shows it's busy with ...Boot Attempt - This will set low stack and boot via INT 19h.
Anyone seen this before? Please help me out.
    Thanx!
    Regards, Mark

    - 1024 MB
    - MSI NX6600-GT
    - MAXTOR 160 GB (Sata)
    - SHARKOON SILENTSTORM (370W)

I will search on int 19h....thanks.
My problem started before the bios-screen.
This is what I tried this evening:
    - Disconnected all non-essential devices...no effect.
    - Cleared the CMOS...system booted to OS!    Screens still garbled!
    - Put in an older graphics-card...No artifacts!
    - Put my MSI NX6600GT (AGP) back in...screen grabled while booting. Once in OS everything
looks fine at first. Later I noticed some odd random pixels. Playing movies is working fine.
Playing 3D games results in all kinds of strange looking artifacts.
    - Installed the latest NVidia- drivers...no effect.
Is my problem still MOBO related or Graphics Adapter?
    Any further advice?
    Thanks!
