Help!! - originals have disappeared after thumbnail cache reorganisation!

I've just allowed i-Photo to re-organise the thumbnail cache and have lost a pile of originals! The thumbnails are there but as soon as I click on them a grey blank screen appears....
Any thoughts or suggestions!!??

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That has happened is that iPhoto has somehow damaged it's database file and lost the link to the original file. The "!" or gray screen means that the library has lost the file path to the original file. This happens when there has been an interruption to iPhoto while it is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. Moving, renaming files or folder inside the library package while in the Finder is another way you can get that indication. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3 - Open the library folder on the desktop and drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

If you have a backup of your computer from before you upgraded then you can restore the data from your backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553

--- If you don't have a backup, consider starting one following the article above ASAP. Anyone with information they care about on their computer should have a backup. It is a hard lesson that every computer user learns at least once.
If you do not have a backup from before you upgraded:
1. Make an iCal backup so you don't lose what you have currently: Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase)
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
---NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion:
4. Open iCal and see if the events you are looking for magically reappear.
If the events don't appear and you don't have a backup or have the events on another device like an iPhone or iPad then your only other option would be to use data recovery software or a data recovery company to try to get the data back (although it might be easier to just re-create the data as best you can).

Photos missing after thumbnail cache rebuild

I upgraded to ilife 08' and rebuilt my thumbnail cache in iphoto after it prompted me to do so. my photos are still on my hard drive in the "originals" folder and I can see the titles and outlines of where the albums should be when navigating through iphoto but I can't look at the pictures. When I scroll through iphoto I can see the pictures for a split second and then they're gone. I tried re-importing my originals folder but it says it already exists. help please!!

What happens if you double click where a thumbnail should be? Does the correct pic open? IF so, then you have a thumbnail problem. If not, then I'm afraid you have a corrupted database.
If it's the thumbnail problem, try rebuilding again. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If it's a corrupted database Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Item in NOTES have disappeared after ipad update

I updated my ipad with the latest update and I just noticed that several notes I had made in the notes app have disappeared. Any way to get them back and what caused this. I will also tell you that I noticed none of my notes were transferring to my iPhone or computer the past month so I can not retrieve them there.

Hello, not sure if I'm having the same problem but it seems similar enough.
My notes were fine after upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite, but more recently after the 10.10.1 update my Notes app is not displaying any notes. I have it set up so that they are all in iCloud (and I've checked that they still are). The real problem here (for me) is that the app itself seems to be broken; I can't create any new notes, it won't sync my notes from iCloud, and can't view my settings... can't do anything, really.
I don't have a solution, but I just thought I'd add to the discussion. Hopefully it's a simple fix.

Photo Projects in Aperture Have Disappeared after upgrading to Aperture 3.2.1

I am running Aperture 3.2.1 on a MacBookPro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 and 4GB RAM. The machine was purchased in November 2010. I have no idea what has caused this and can only guess that it was caused by the software update. I can only view 1 album that had about 12 photos and now only has 3.
I had also created several smart albums that have disappeared.
I have never been able to figure out a similar problem of projects disappearing on my G5 mac using Aperture 1.5. However, in the case of the G5, I can still see the photos in the library but not in the named project.

I can't believe the solution was that simple! I was in a different library that I may have created intially. You have saved me from dispair. Thank you.

Thunderbird updated and now all my events are gone! I updated lightening, but the events are still missing. I have a blank calendar..

We solved it. You know on the left hand its written calendar, and then under its written the name of the person/calendar. Well it was saying that, that specific calendar was momentarily unavailable. we double clicked it and it gave us the option of activating the calendar so we checked marked it. When we clicked ok or save it asked us to connect to our google account. After doing so we checked our calendar on google and found all of our events. Turns out we were lucky that thunderbird was saving the date we entered in gmail as well. We were never able to retrieve them on thunderbird, we had to retype everything. Sorry i am recounting this from memory so i might not be describing this 100% accuratly. I hope this helps you!

Both my CD drives have disappeared after Nano and iTunes install...

My girlfriend has installed her new nano and itunes from the install Cd that came with it, immediately after install both her CD drives have now disappeared from Explorer and disk management.

Personas - Themes have disappeared after update. Is this usual?

I started to use Personas but after last Firefox update they disappeared and are no longer in Tools>AddOns> Themes. Is this usual and do they have to be downloaded after each update?

Drive overwrite checkbox appears to have disappeared after firmware update

Hi,
I replaced a faulty drive in my Iomega StorCenter 200d. Now I get a message saying Drive 1 overwrite required, but it seems there is no where I can force I can give permission for this happen.
In the end the only solution Lenovo support could offer was to rebuild the entire array which is not acceptable.
After some research it appears that earlier versions of firmware had this option but in later versions of firmware this option seems to have vanished.
Can anybody please help shed light on how I can force a drive to be overwritten? Is there a hidden option somewhere or is this just an oversight on the part of Lenovo's software developers?

What firmware version are you running on the unit? Also is the unit a ix2 or ix4?
If you are using 2.1.x, please click on the overwrite alert on the dashboard and follow the instructions from there.
If you are using 3.x firmware, please click on All Features>Drive Management>Settings. There you will see a option to "add drives to storage system" check box, that will be the option you would need to use to overwrite the marked (green stripes) disk.

Applications have disappeared after personalising home screen

I hope someone can help...
My intention was for my little one to have their games easily available and other all other icons in 2 folders.
I moved all the upper icons from the top frame (mail, contacts, internet browser etc) into 1 of the folders......
I then thought.... I will move the 2 folders into the upper frame, giving a seperation so all games are in the lower frame.
This is when I got an error message (I didn't note what it was---errr) and then sadly, my folder and it's contents disappeared. Within this is App World, Set up, mail, contacts etc etc.
Can anyone help as to how I might be able to retrieve them or how to do a factory restore......

Nobody is quite sure why this happens but there may be a limit to how many icons you can cram into the top dock area. There have been stated in the past ways to get them back, (you could search the forum) but if the icons are nowhere to be seen, and a simple restart does not fix it, then maybe a factory reset is quicker.
If you have important data that needs backing up you need to do that by connecting to a PC or Mac with the relevant Desktop Software installed and do the backup (media data only) command.
Then the factory reset is in Playbook's Settings (gear wheel icon) then Security then Security Wipe. Make sure you know your current Blackberry ID and Password as it will take you right through the same setup routine that you used when it came out of the box.
Restore data only (Media) as if you restore all it may reinstall the chaos. Then reinstall the apps from App World (My World uninstalled list) and they will all be free provided you use the same Blackberry ID. Reinstall email accounts etc.

My images in CS6 have disappeared after 3.3 update
