Help! OS X Install disc does not see my HD.

After receiving the error discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2229361#2229361
I attempted to boot from my 10.4 install disc and re-install OS X. I was going to do an erase and install as my important files are already backed up. However, when I got to the Select a Destination stage of the install process, my HD is not displayed at all. I had JUST backed up the last files I thought I'd want and restarted to this problem. Now, unless I boot with the install disc, nothing happens. I just get gray screen. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thank you!

Tim,
Did you try to "Repair Disk"??? If not, try to repair it. I could not repair my HD with DU, which is why I chose to use DiskWarrior.
Looks like you're getting the same result I was but without the error code (9972). There may be a difference in seriousness in getting the numeric code and not. I do not know that to be true or not.
From my experience of the last few days, I would try this only because it DID WORK for me.
I don't know what version of DiskWarrior you have access to, but if is version 3, then you can download the update and they include a wizard to make a fresh bootable CD which includes all of the updated code. And this new code is what will make your repair happen. So, check out the version of the DW disk you have, then go to the Alsoft website and download the update which is free. Free may depend on what version you have.
Having done that, then you can boot from your new DW CD and repair your Directory which is what I did this afternoon. When done, run Disk Utility from your OS X DVD, and check your Permissions and Verify Disk. When I did this, all of my problems had been repaired, so I would expect you will have the same success as I did.
Now, if all of the above went well, you can then select to Install from your OS DVD and you should see your HD icon.
One step at a time. Good luck. Keep me posted.

I turned ato login off. Set a password. On login it failed. Perhaps I misstyped when setting up. I used the instaldisc to reset the password but after a few attempts It failed. Was it a mistake to select the hard drive after resetting the password.  I would like to try the alternative but now the C-key does not even let the install disc open, it goes directly to  the name and password screen. Keunepete,
When I ordered my books for the ICND1 and ICND2, they came with a CD in the back pocket (sleeve) of the book. Along with the CD was a thick piece of paper that had the activation code on it. It was a white, square piece of paper with big black print on it. Did you buy your book used? Was the CD sealed in the back pocket?

  • Forgot name/password and install disc does not allow me to reset it

I forgot the Name and Password I set up to log into my imac. It is an older imac, from 2006 and I can't remember which version operating system. I have tried to use the install disc to reset the password, but it does not allow me to do so. Is there a way to reset the name and password without the install disc? For as long as I can remember whenever I would turn on my mac there would be an image that I had chosen and then a field to enter password. Just recently I turned on my mac and the image or avatar was no longer coming up and it asked for Name and Password. I have tried every combination I can think of and nothing works. I have tried to reset using my install disc, but it says that I do not have a password to reset.

Before giving up try the following technique to determine the user account names, and reset their passwords if necessary.
    1. Shut down your Mac and turn it back on while holding down the ⌘ and S keys at the same time until your see a black screen with white text. This is known as Single User mode.
    2. You can skip the following step, but it is recommended that you do not because it will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can:
At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again. Once the file system check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
    3. Type the following
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
    4. Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are. You can skip the next step if you found the user name you recall and know its password.
    5. Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing Password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You may get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    6. Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Install Software Does Not See the Router

Trying to install a WRT54GX4 using a DSL modem with Windows XP.
Every time that I get to the point (both the CD and the "Easy Install download) where the software is supposed to find the router I get a message that says that the wireless broadband router is not in the network. The power on, Internet, WLAN, and Ethernet lights are all on on the router.
I am an experienced computer user and have used Linksys wireless products before and have done everything that I know how to do other than manually install the puppy. Everything has been connected properly and in the correct sequence.
    Thank you,
    Ag

I am having the same problem.  I tried the setup using instructions from the CD included with the router, from a version of the setup downloaded from the LinkSys site, and using the interactive utility at the web site.  Everything flows smoothly along until it always fails with a message that it does not recognize that there is a wireless router connected.  I tried the online chat help from LinkSys but this was challenging since I only had a single machine and single internet conection and couldn't maintain the connection for the chat session.
I have a Westell DSL modem from BellSouth and they did confirm that my LinkSys wireless router should work OK with my existing DSL service.

  • Start-up disc does not see Yosemite installed in a partition of the hard drive

I have partitioned the hard drive of my macbook pro in two parts
on the first part I use Leopard and many programs for image processing
on the second part I use the latest operating system (now Yosemite) so
that I can back-up my iPhone ,use latest Safari Mail etc.
Up to Mavericks I was able to switch between the two os's just by going
to preferences start-up disc and selecting the partition with the desired os.
not any longer , Leopard's start-up preference cannot detect the Yosemite carrying
partition while when using Yosemite's start-up preference I can see the leopard partition

Reboot with the Option key held down and see if the Yosemite partition is recognized.  If it is boot into it and then Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk.
When you boot next into Lepoard see if the Yosemite partition is recognized.

  • Install disc does not appear

I am trying to install Tiger on a third computer I just got. When I insert the disc in the G$'s drive nothing appears on the screen. After a period of time the disc ejects on its own. I've tried to boot using the disc (Command C) but no luck.
I would greatly appreciate any ideas or comments.
    Thanks

    William:
As Mick asked, are you sure your optical drive is operating properly.
Next,be sure that you are using a Full Retail Version of Tiger and not computer specific disks or update version, unless they are specific to your computer, as these can be troublesome, and are a violation of the single user license agreement.
Be sure that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements for Tiger.
    Good luck.

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it an additonal 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Apple's instructions to do what you want are here:
It will often help to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express for the setup. Once the Express is configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location.

Although an AirPort Extreme is shown as the extending device in the example, the setup for an AirPort Express is exactly the same

You don't see drives when using a hardware RAID only the volumes.
WD Green are not suitable for hardware RAID (or software RAID for that matter).
USB2 and TimeMachine are a disaster waiting to happen. I've used SATA (internal) and eSATA (using SATA PCIe cards) trouble-free.
I can't say I begin to understand your use or "choosing the install drive for the backup"
    Install what?
You don't load TimeMachine. Maybe seems minor but that is not how to describe the behavior of software.

I'm having the same issue with a file called IMG_2353.MOV that was imported into iPhoto from my iPhone and also have to manually select the items to import (so the rogue file doesn't error everything out). I've tried using Image Capture to locate/delete the file directly from my iPhone, but even though I can SEE it in Image Capture, I can't delete it or anything. This is VERY frustrating! My friend/Apple guru's only suggestion was to backup my phone then restore it through iTunes. Risky but should do the trick. I'm too scared to try, though!

  • Acrobat ver 9.4.2 does not see my installed printers

after the latest update Adobe Acrobat does not see my installed printers -   Adobe Reader sees them fine - this is creating a major problem for me as I now had to go in and mark reader as the default program - every time I try to print from acrobat it tells me I have to install a printer first - I have more than 2 printer installed ( local and network printers)  what is going on and how can I fix this - have tried doing a repair with no luck

As suggested in a previous post I looked up the Support posting in the Forums about this issue, looking for the same solution from the issue we are experiencing since that last update. I used the first solution which seems to have worked.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/891/cpsid_89178.html
My only issue with this was clicking on manifest file, windows saved it as a .xml file not .manifest file extension. Windows does see .manifest as a .xml file but does not have a viewer to open it. I changed the saved .xml file to .manifest and then followed the instructions of copying the file into the Acrobat folder, rebooted the computer. Now the original default printer works with Acrobat 9 Pro.
Another strange thing about this problem is that if you change your default printer to another printer in printer/faxes it will see those but not the original default printer. But the above solution did work for me.
    Best to all.
