HELP! OS X won't boot - Blue Screen at startup... No mouse, nothing...

I have a PowerMac G4 MDD running OSX 10.4.8 (or 9)... About a month ago, it suffered a kernel panic, and upon restarting, it wouldn't load OS X. Now whenever I start the computer, it displays the white screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gear, then it switches to a solid blue screen and stays there. There is no mouse on the screen and the keyboard is unresponsive.
The computer will boot in safe mode. I have tried removing login items in the account preferences and third party items from the StartupItems folders. But still, I get the blue screen.
I've tried resetting the PRAM. I booted from the install disc and repaired the startup disk. It said no repairs were necessary. I've repaired permissions on the disk as well. I also booted from the Hardware Test disc, but still, nothing.
Yesterday I did an Archive and Install from my Tiger install disc, hoping that this would fix things, but it didn't. As a last resort, I'm considering wiping the hard drive and doing a fresh install of OS X.
Does anyone have any advice? Has this happened to you too? Does this sound like a hardware or software problem?

Do you have a firewire external drive, or other bootable backup? Try booting from another drive & see if the problem persists. Run Disk Warrior while booted from its CD, or from an alternate drive. I don't think it will help, though, because Archive & Install should create a new directory. If the problem persists when booting from an alternate system, you most likely have a hardware problem. You could install a fresh copy of OS X on your alternate drive to make sure (but not if it's your only backup!).

  • Macbook won't boot, Blue Screen in Safe Mode

Having a couple of issues at the moment. To start off, woke my MacBook from sleep mode and found the screen had shimmering edges, the screen was also displaced (part of the left of the screen was showing on the right. Decided to reboot to solve the issue, when I tried this, got past the Apple logo and wheel, then got a blue screen. Now when I boot, I just get a white screen Tried booting in safe mode but ended up with a blue screen with streaks.
On top of that when I went into support, my macbook isn't listed under my products and when I tried to enter it in, it said it was under a different account (I did get it through a college course but It was definitely registered under my name and with my account).
Can anyone shed some light on this, or have any suggestions?

Actually, just get a blue screen when trying to start up normally

  • 'Famous' blue screen at startup AND safe mode boot failure

    Dear all,
Two days ago, after installing the new Java update/airport update and restarting, I encountered a 'blue screen' on startup after getting past the mac symbol and swirling cog. I cannot say whether the updates were the cause (doubtful) of if my cheap USB mouse that was still plugged it caused it or whether i have the dreaded 'bad sectors.' The cause aside, here is what i've tried to fix the issue:
    1) Disk Utility - Verification (OK'd) and Repairs (fine)
    2) Disk Utility - Verification of Permissions (a few needed to be done) All repaired
    -blue screen-
    -Restart after period-
    3) Rebooting in safe mode, removing startup items from the login items settings menu
    4) Removing startup items from System/Library/StartupItems folders
    5) Remove airport extensions (recent - date modified in list view)
(NB - safe mode i could say my desktop perfectl in original form and all files!)
    -Restart-
-no longer able to start in safe mode-
    -blue screen remains-
    6)Single User mode -
resetting preference files (loginwindow.plist and windowserver.plist)
Finally system profiler from Tiger DVD states:
    *Permissions repaired
*Dependency errors: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily & com.apple.kernel.iokit no valid version found
    *Integrity: kext has no receipt
I backed up most my data from the LAST crash, but recent music/1000 photos and others have been backed up altho i've been meaning to! Help!
I'M PANICKING now can no longer get in SAFE MODE!!
    Please help Mac911!!!!

    Update:
So, I managed to do ALL that you said, EXCEPT, the reboot and work fine business.
I created the admin account which works fine. So now I can see three user accounts (looks like there as already an admin type one).
The one I created works fine, only, I can only access/see the login screen through a safe boot, (otherwise blue screens...) . I can get into the admin account fine, but when restarting and logging in as my original user account it won't boot. Something is very wrong in MY user account. I think at this point my data there is still retrievable somehow for a backup, clean start. but i haven't reached that point yet.
Anyone have any clues what migt have caused the error in my user login?
One of the things I tried (too hastily now i admit) first was to remove the recently added updates from the extensions folder. has this exacerbated the problem? Can i put them back without logging in as me??
remember from my first post system profiler says software/extensions integrity 'kext has no receipt' and dependency errors: 'com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily and com.apple.kernel.iokit; no valid version found' - whereas in my newly created admin account it appears AOK.
    is this the source?
    any ideas anyone?
sorry lots of queries here but i am ever hopeful.....
    All yours,

  • Leopard general issues (slow boot-Blue screen of tolerance)?

I upgraded it to leopard 10.5.2 a week ago. I thought my old system with tiger (10.4.11) used to boot faster and work faster and I thought I was being cynical. I just checked with my buddy's computer which is completely identical to mine (2GHz intel Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram, 120gb hard disk macbook). She still has tiger 10.4.10. It boots drastically faster. As soon as dark grey apple disappears tiger shows a progress bar showing the log on process and it logs on in less than 5 secs. Overall boot up was around 20secs. First of all I don't know why leopard doesn't have that progress bar. Secondly leopard hangs on a blue screen during startup for another 20 seconds which makes the overall time 40-50 secs.
I deleted all cache everything and unused files while installing. I never got a blue screen of death either. It is almost a clean install. People might suggest erase/install or archive/install but I checked other forums people suffering with this issue has not been successful to eradicate it this way.
I checked my logs. they are pretty clean except some launchctl convert stuff.
I am pretty convinced it is leopard issue.
    I have two questions:
    1) Is Apple aware of this issue (blue screen on startup for 20 sec) and would be address it in next update? or is it not fixable?
    2) Can I somehow have that auto-logon progress bar back?
    3) Sidebar fonts are very small. Tiger sidebar was much easier to use. Is their a way to increase font size.
In general I am quite disappointed with Leopard. It is much slower especially with respect to finder windows. I wish I could downgrade to Tiger but it is to much hassle..taking backup..reinstalling all applications. I kinda like quicklook too. I'll miss it if I downgrade.
I would like to know whether apple addresses such issues in upgrades? I am patient.

    I have two questions:
    Actually I count three questions.
    1) Is Apple aware of this issue (blue screen on startup for 20 sec) and would be address it in next update? or is it not fixable?
Not a problem with OS X. More likely a problem with your installation or setup. I have 5 Macs running Leopard and have no similar problem nor ever have. Although boot times differ with hardware, startupitems, login items, etc. they are not much different. My Mac Pro takes half the time as my laptops typically.
    2) Can I somehow have that auto-logon progress bar back?
No. It's no longer included in OS X.
    3) Sidebar fonts are very small. Tiger sidebar was much easier to use. Is their a way to increase font size.
Not aware of any control over this in Leopard, but if there is someone else may let you know.
If you want to improve performance on your computer then try some maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Blue screen at startup---have tried EVERYTHING!!!  Any ideas???

Hi there, I've got a really frustrating problem concering my husband's iBook G4. One day he got home from work, tried to start up, and got only a blue screen (no cursor.) (This is shortly after updating to 10.4.11, incidentally...coincidence?) We went to the forums, and tried numerous fixes, including:
Booting from install and running disk repair (none needed)
Booting in target disk mode with my mac and removing the login.plist file
Removing all login items from both user accounts in target mode
Attempting a boot (and eventual restore) from the external firewire backup, but it won't get past the blue screen here, either.
It started up in safe mode a couple of times, and even restarted in normal mode once, but then in primary account froze back up after a few minutes. Then it wouldn't even start in safe mode.
Then we did an Archive & Install from the original startup (Panther) but when it got to the login screen, it wouldn't accept either user password (even though the hint indicated we were using the right ones) and then froze. It now won't even boot from this disk, or start up in safe mode.
Everything seems to be intact while perusing it in target disk mode; even ran a hardware test from the Apple Hardware Test disc and that all checked out (no idea if this would have made any difference, but I'm grasping at straws, here!)
I know we did a couple more things suggested in the forums/support pages, but I can't remember what they are at this point...my brain is fried! (Also remember following Apple's instruction's for what to do when you get a blue screen at startup...tried this first thing to no avail.)
Soooooo...any suggestions or ideas? We would greatly appreciate the help!
    Thanks so much!
    Jennifer

    Hi Jennifer,
Ok, so...what's going on today is that Leopard will open to the login screen (sometimes I can log in but generally not), but then the cursor is frozen, as is the keyboard (can't type to login or use shortcuts) and even a usb mouse doesn't work. The only thing I can do is power down with the off button, and upon restarting, if I get past the login, get the message "Computer was restarted after Mac OSX quit unexpectedly" or something like that. (Just restarted from frozen login screen and got blue screen again.)
Wondering if it's Leopard or my wonky install (we started up in target mode, with the install disc in the drive, and opened the installer on my mac, then chose the broken mac hd to install to. Seemed to work, but may this be related to the driver issue you mentioned?) We did it this way (after doing a zero-out erase) because it wouldn't even start up from the install disc itself.
It sounds to me like this method of installing is okay. If you did not have the correct drivers, you could never get as far as you do in Leopard. I am wondering why you install with the disk in your Mac and not in the iBook.
Anyway, have reset the PRAM, still no luck. On the apple page regarding this procedure they mention a power management unit reset for ibooks...would this correspond at all to our problems? Is it something I should try or steer clear of?
Okay. Resetting PRAM was a long shot, but worth trying. I would steer clear of trying to reset PMU. That is related to sleeping, waking and such things and your problems do not seem to be related to that. Also, I have never reset PMU, but from what I recall, it sounded a bit tricky.
Am now attempting to reboot from backup. And yes, when I open Startup Manager, the internal hard drive DOES show up. If that means anything. Have a bootable backup (created with SuperDuper) which also shows up, but when I try to start up with it, I get stuck at blue screen (still.)
As far as the iBook hard drive is concerned, this is a good sign. I am thinking that perhaps the hard drive is okay and the problem is something else.
So, since the iBook originally came with Panther, and Leopard is really yet another unknown to throw into the loop, if I do another erase/install, I'm thinking Panther is the way to go? (Unfortunately we shared a family pack Tiger with a friend, and haven't got a hold of that install disc yet, otherwise I'd try Tiger, since it's what it was running and so is what the backup is, too.)
From what I have seen in the forums, when people are having startup problems, the last resort solution usually works. That is, they take the install disk that came with the machine (Panther in your case), erase and zero out the hard drive and then re-install. That usually seems to do the trick. What they have probably done is either replaced some corrupted piece of software or fixed a directory problem on the disk. In your case, you have already done most of this except not with the Panther disk. So, I think it is worth going through this effort with Panther. If this actually worked, then you could worry about how to update your software to where you want it to be. If it does not work, I would consider this more evidence that there is probably a hardware issue.
If this doesn't work (and would probably have to try in target mode again if the install disc won't open...) should I buy Tech Tool or Disk Warrior or just send it in for repair? I suppose there's a point at which I'll have to admit defeat!
Not sure that I caught this before. You imply that the install disk will not open if it is inserted into the iBook. Is this a problem that showed up when the blue screen business started? When you insert the disk into the iBook and then reboot that computer from the disk (pressing the C key during startup), do you get something on the desktop?
If, when repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility, you had received a message that the disk was not repaired, then a stronger utility would be a reasonable choice. But, that does not seem to be your situation. So, if it were me, I would probably not buy Tech Tool or Disk Warrior at this point. I do think that it is possible that these utilities might be able to do more troubleshooting than you can do with Disk Utility and the Apple hardware CD. Tech Tool in particular has some hardware testing capability. So, if money were no object, you might buy that and see if it can give you more detailed diagnostic information. Of course, these are purely my opinions. I could be totally wrong on any of this.
Oh yeah, I don't know if I mentioned this earlier or not but all the restarts yesterday were accompanied be a brief "whooshing" sound (like a fan) for a second or so, and once I got both that sound and a "boooooop" issuing from the innards. Not sure if this means anything or not, but thought I'd mention it. Maybe the hard drive is melting! (Also I get further along the startup route after it's been turned off for a while.)
This is worth mentioning and I overlooked it in your previous posts. The "booooooop" sound got my attention. When the computer is started up, one of the first things that is done is that there are some hardware tests performed. Apple does use some sounds to indicate certain problems. You can learn a little more at You hear "breaking glass" or "musical beeps" when you turn on your Mac. I don't know if you are hearing one of these sounds or if they are unrelated. But, I think that the "boooooop" sound in particular might be trying to tell you something.
Let me sum up my opinions (which could be dead wrong). I still suspect a hardware problem. However, maybe the hard drive is okay. I think it would be worth using the Panther CD to do another erase and install on the iBook. If you still do not have a working computer, it is probably time to seek professional help. (However, if you get to this point, it is conceivable that you could be having some problems with your RAM chips. If you have worked with RAM chips before, you could try to play games with them: reseating them and removing them one by one- if you have two chips. But, if you have not done this before and are do not have some familiarity with working on hardware of this nature, perhaps you should just leave this alone.)
If you need to seek some professional help, you might be able to try one of these options - If you have AppleCare, you should definitely give them a call. If you live close enough to an Apple store, you could take your computer to the genius bar and see if they can help.
Sorry that you are having such a hassle,
    Rich

  • Automatically show boot select screen at startup

Is there a way to force OSX to start with the boot selection screen at startup?  I'd like to be able to power on my system and have it show me the boot select screen (i.e. Windows/OSX) so that I can choose which OS I wish to boot into.  I currently have to hold down the Option key at startup in order to bring this screen up or do the same after a restart to change OSes.  Is it possible to do?  Would save having to babysit the Windows OS whenever it decides to update the OS with a restart and would allow me to quickly switch OSes merely by doing a restart from either OS.
My setup is two physical hard drives, one for OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and one for Windows (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit).

rEFIt will basically do the same as holding the option key,I believe it's defaulted(?) to give the boot screen when you cold start showing any available boot drives, but it won't help with Windows auto restart after updating. There may be an option to do so as there's a lot more to rEFIt then I use so you may be able to have it show up at restarts also.
    Sorry I can't help more....

  • IMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. Started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup. I can get into safe mode. Tried install disc for disc utility and reloaded OS. Still get blue screen.

I have an older iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11. The other day I started playing with a bluetooth speaker (may or may not be related). Now I cannot get past the blue screen on startup.
I can get into safe mode. But no regular startup.
I tried disabling bluetooth, thinking that might be related. It didn't help.
I even tried using the install disc to run disc utility. That didn't work so I reloaded the OS.
But I still get hung on the blue screen when trying a normal startup.
    All help would be appreciated.

Try resetting the PMU/SMU and PRAM/NVRAM. You'd need to identify the mode of resetting depending on the model of your G5 iMac. The Apple support sites that would help you for this are –

  • I see a blank blue screen at startup

I see a blank blue screen at startup. Am I going to lose everything that I didn't backup?

So I booted off the install disc (hold C at startup), did an archive and install) and then shut it down. Powered it up and zapped the PRAM at startup (commandoption+PR) and it now boots instantly. Just curious as to what video card you have in yours? I've been reading a lot of threads about problems caused by the ATI Radeon HD 2600, which is what I have in mine. Sounds as if a firmware update is needed, but not yet available. I also had 4 kernel panics in my first 20 starts. Apple Genius Bar said this was due to Symantec Anti-Virus for Mac.

  • "blue screen" at startup- still stuck!

So for some reason or another, I've ended up with the "blue screen" at startup problem. when I start my macBook in Leopard, after the apple logo, I get stuck permanently at a blue screen. The first thing I did was to repair the disk but the disk utility told me my disk was fine. Then I tried to do a restore of Mac OS X but after about a minute I get a error message saying "Restore Failure could not restore- File Exists". I have no idea how or why this happened or what it means. I would like to try apple's solution to the problem but they are very vague. They say try an "Archive and Install installation of Leopard". I have no idea how to do that! They say it is covered on "page 7 of the Install & Setup Guide included on the Leopard DVD" but I can't seem to find this so-called "Install & Setup Guide" anywhere on either of the two DVDs. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

It's all in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US BTW, the setup guide's on the Leopard installation disk (retail version) and not on the disks that came with your machine.

blue screen after start up; mouse still moves but no icons are visible.  Removed SDRAM and reinserted the SDRAM

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • OS X Won't completely boot - blue screen, pointer then nothing

(MBP with problem is 2.0GHz Core Duo 15" MBP. 1.5GB RAM)
As topic says, g/f woke her MBP pro up from sleeping to type an email. Shortly after opening the mac everything stopped responding. She held down the power button to turn off the mac and then turned it back on. MBP loads past grey Apple screen and shows the progress bar for loading OS X. Once progress bar dissapears then nothing, just a blue screen with the mouse pointer.
I have already done the following:
    - Booted from Install DVD and ran disk utility. Verified Drive but no isssues. Verified and Repaired Permissions. Still didn't boot
    - Booted in 'Safe' boot. Exact same problem
    - Booted into Single User Mode and ran fsck -fy, no problems reported. I can browse the drive and see files etc.
    - When I attempted to finish loading OS X from the command line I do remember seeing the following error: coreservicesd crashed. Googled but couldn't really find out anything I understood to help.
What are my options here. The MBP in question is unfortunately about 2 weeks past the Warranty date w/ no applecare but she may take in tomorrow regardless.
Can I use a firewire cable to connect the two macs and at least get the most important data off if we have to reinstall?
Thanks in advance for the help!

That sounds like wake from Hibernation/Deep Sleep - there's no "progress bar" with a normal Boot, only a spinning grey wheel then the Desktop appears .
I believe this is the screen he is referring to.

  • IBookG4 won't boot, fixedblue screen after Mac logo, could bGoogleEarth lib?

    Hi all,
I have an iBook G4 with MacOS Tiger 10.4.11 (which gave me no trouble at all) and I recently got a new MBP17", so I wanted to migrate the data in my old iBook into the MBP. I tried the Migration Assistant but the FireWire connection always stopped when the process had just been initiated (the FireWire logo on my iBook screen suddenly freezes instead of keeping moving around the screen, and I can only shut down the iBook in order to get out of the migration assistant, or the finder if I was browsing through the iBook's hard drive). So far, that was the only problem. I tried to investigate to see why this happened, and since I got a report on the Migration Asst. about some GoogleEarth files, I thought that might be the problem (I copy the reports below, in Spanish, but I think you get the idea: problem when copying file in the route...)

So the thing is that I didn't even have GoogleEarth in my iBook anymore! I deleted it long time ago as it didn't work properly, I forget what the problem was but I thought it was thoroughly erased. Apparently not. So I thought if I installed the newer version of GoogleEarth I might be able to get over this problem (although the FireWire stall problem might not be related to this at all, I've never had problems with it so it was my only guess).
Now comes the thorny part. The problem is I was twitching so many things that I don't remember exactly what happened, but the result is that, after installing GoogleEarth again, and having some trouble while doing so, I decide to delete it again, I try to do the migration again, and it's a no-go. But things get even worse: now my iBook won't even boot. I can see it if I open it as a hard drive through fireWire (T when rebooting), although it will eventually get stuck and I have to shut down and reboot+T again. But if I reboot normally, it won't get past the blue screen right after the Mac logo+wheel gray screen. The mouse appears, then disappears, and that's the end to it.
I've tried repairing the disc with DiskUtility, both with the original MacOSX CD and the DiskUtility on my new MBP through FireWire connection, before it gets stuck (no problems found), repaired the permissions (same same), reset the firmware (rebootopt+cmd+of, then reset-all), reset the PRAM (rebootopt+cmd+pr), I've tried to reboot in Safe Mode (it gets stuck in the Apple logo+wheel screen for a really, really long time, then lets me enter my password, and then gets stuck again in a blue scree, this time with a default desktop background image, then the plain blue screen, and all the while a repetitive sound in the hard drive as if stuck in reading something, which is the same sound as when I reboot normally and gets stuck), and tried DiskWarrior (but it won't work because of the FireWire issue, I think).
I've pulled out the logs from the iBook library and, although there are many things, I will just show you the ones related to GoogleEarth, since it seems like the origin of the problem.

One more thing: the rolling sound on the iBook's hard drive is something that has been going on for a long time, for instance when I opened Safari, it would get the multicolored wheel out, and this sound would start as the whole computer was paralyzed, but eventually it would move on and I could use Safari just fine (of course, since this happened every time, I switched to FireFox). The noise it makes now when stuck in the blue screen is the EXACT same noise as back then. That's why I think it's related to GoogleEarth, because my sturdy, 6-yr-old iBook had been working fine until I tried to migrate the data and the GoogleEarth dylib problem arose (no hard drive problem is my guess - and hope).
I would appreciate any help with this, since I can't really get anything out of the iBook. The FireWire connection will be interrupted constantly, and I can try to backup all the info by rebooting repeatedly and copying manually but it's a pain and some parts of the system just will cause the FireWire connection problem to appear quicker, hence giving me no time no copy them.
Thanks in advance, if you need any further info I'll be glad to provide what I can.
    Miguel

    sig,
I'm sorry the post was so long but sometimes it pays off to provide all the info at once rather than have people ask about things one has already tried
I think I'm going to do just that: save what data I can, try to do the basic migration manually (Mail account and mailboxes, Internet bookmarks, and some application preferences), and Install the Mac OS X from scratch.
    Thanks!
