HELP! OSX won't boot?

OSX 10.4
Macbook Intel 2.0Ghz
I am running boot camp w/ xp on a partition of the HD
I downloaded/installed all the updates that were available. Allowed the computer to restart itself. Now when i try to boot to OSX it shows a folder with a question mark on it. Then it boots to windows instead.
Please help, i have a paper to finish for school by tomorrow and the other 32 pages are on the Apple part of the HD.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Did you Repair permissions before and after the update?
Insert the install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. Once the installer has started and you selected your language, select "Disk Utility" from the MENU. Repair the hard disk and repair permissions. Quit disk utility and reboot. Does the problem persist?

Mac OSx won't boot up after update to 10.6.7?

    Hi Mike
This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

  • Help: iMac won't boot past Grey logo screen with spinning lines

My fiance's iMac (intel based) running snow leopard (upgraded from Leopard a couple months ago) will not boot past the logo and spinning lines. This started after at attempting to restart after installing updates to Safari and iTunes.
When booting in verbose mode I get these lines:
Launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /Library/LaunchDaemons
Launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
Launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_inid.d

Then it just stops and does nothing.
I've unplugged everything except the apple keyboard and mouse. Ethernet is not connected.
She doesn't seem to have the original disc that came with the computer, but I do have the Snow Leopard upgrade disc.
What do I do? It won't boot in Safe Mode either, freezes at the same spot.
I'm not a particularly savvy Mac user as I recently embraced them when we moved in together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Repairing permission is not the first answer. Should try to run fsck and reset the PRAM
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, typerebootat the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

  • HELP: T440s won't boot after unsuccessful memory update

I have a T440s that came with 4GB RAM. Purchased a G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB DDR3L 1600 SO-DIMM (1.35v, PC3-12800, 11-11-11-28) from Newegg and installed in T440s. I did disable the internal battery from BIOS before installed the memory. However, I found my T440s won't even boot. I then tried the memory chip in two other laptops and found this SO-DIMM is defective so it's on the way back to Newegg.
Now my big problem is that my T440s won't boot anymore even with original configurations. Push the power button, there is no response from T440s. However, I do observed LEDs blink. When only use battery, then LEDs give one short blink every few seconds. LEDs will give four short blinks every few seconds if I plug in the wall power supply.
Did I kill my T440s ? Any way that can wake it up or I just need to contact Lenovo for warranty service?
Any help/suggestion is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

  • HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
    CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)
    MB: MSI K8N NEO
    MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)
    VC: ATI 9800 Pro 450/380
    PSU: ANTEC True 550w
Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now.  It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off.  All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't.  Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out.  It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still.  I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that.  arg.  So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

  • HELP: iMac won't boot up.

Old iMac, due for replacement.  Working as expected until other day.  Now won't boot past initial apple splash screen, then dies after 10 seconds.

Sounds like a hardware failure, you can run Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode however you will need the original install discs. In order to get a replacement set you need to call AppleCare, give them a credit card number and the serial number of the machine and for a nominal charge they will replace them. However your machine is  pretty old if still running Leopard. You may want to consider options such as taking it to your local Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed and repaired or possibly even upgrading to a new machine if necessary.

  • HELP! Won't boot update of 10.6.5

I just installed 10.6.5 on my 13" Aluminum Unibody Late 2008 Macbook up from 10.6.4 and now my Mac side won't boot up (I have a windows side that I have to select by holding down option when the white screen comes up). What happened was, I installed the 10.6.5 update and then rebooted my computer, and the apple came up with a loading bar like it was installing the new update, and the update bar completed, but then it started over, and then the computer just turned off. And now every time I try to boot up the mac side, it does the loading bar, completes it, and then shuts off.
    What do I do?

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.

  • OSX won't boot up

    Hey all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with my MacBook Pro. My wife was running Power Point on it for a few hours yesterday and ever since then, I can't get it to boot in OSX. It just hangs on the grey screen and keeps spinning. I've tried the following:
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMC
Ran Repair Disk (disk shows up okay)
Ran Repair Permissions (this always fails)
Tried to start in safe mode (doesn't work)
I did safe mode with a status and I get the following errors: Vnode_validate_compressed_file_type4 error: -1 and Disk0s2: I/O error.
I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard, but it fails
Not sure what else to do. I have Windows XP on here and that loads fine. The closest Apple Store is like 70 miles away and i would rather not make the trip. I can start it up as an external drive via FireWire and everything appears to be fine. Of course I haven't done a backup recently and I don't want to wipe it. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff
I have fixed a similar problems in the past, most of them seem to happen when running Microsoft Office on a Mac. I have to agree with Linc, it is time to replace the hard drive, you can never trust it anymore. However, problems with bootloaders have the advantage, that if you don't have a recent backup, you can still easily get to your data on the hard disk for free.
You might have already solved your problem by now, but just in case there are others out there experiencing the problem.
First of all you need to start with the Laptop in the power down state. Hold the power button down until it goes silent.
Press and hold the 'alt' key and turn the power back on. Hold the 'alt' key down until you get the 'Macintosh HD' and a 'Recovery HD' icon. If you have an OS X installation disc in the optical drive, you will also have an icon for this as well, but it will not help you, so ignore it. Just as a side comment, the 'alt' key is often referred to as the 'option' key. There are many postings on this, but to those of you who make rude comments when somebody asks this question, not all keyboards are the same!
Getting back to more important things, select the 'Recovery HD' using the arrow keys and hit enter. The laptop will now boot from the recovery image.
When you get the application 'Mac OS X ....' then you have the choice to restore from the latest backup on the time capsule. The '...' will be different, depending on the standard language' You can change this in the dropdown menu, if you are more comfortable working in a different language to the one given.
Assuming you don't have a recent backup, then you need to go through the drop down menu items until you find one called 'Terminal'. Start the application and make the window bigger.
For the next step, I am going to assume two things. You have an external hard drive, which is bigger that the amount of data you want to recover connected to the usb port. You are not afraid to type in a few unix command. If you feel uncomfortable, then ask some IT colleagues for help.
First of all, you will need to use the 'cd' command. This enables you to change directory. Type in 'cd /Volumes' and hit enter.
Next you will need to see what's in this directory, so you will need to use the second important unix command, namely 'ls'. Type in 'ls' and hit enter.
What you get on the screen are different volumes. You will see the 'Macintosh HD' volume where your will find all your data and the external hard drive connected to the usb port. Obviously, this will show up depending on the label that you or the manufacturer gave it.
You now need to navigate to the directoy where all your files are stored. to do this type in 'cd Macintosh HD/Users' and press enter. One tip here, press the tab button and it will autofill the rest of the text for you, so just keep typing until the volume name is unique.
In the Users directory, you will need to do another directory listing. Type in 'ls' and you will get two folders, namely 'Shared' and the folder where all your data is stored. You can either stop here, or navigate into your personal directory, depending on how much you want to recover.
The next and final command is to copy the files across to the external hard drive, e.g.
    cp -R -vp text1 /Volumes/text2
where text1 is the name of folder where your data is stored.
text2 is the label of the external hard drive.
The '-R' is important for copying all sub-folders and files. The '-v' is important to make it verbose. This will give you confidence that the computer is doing something, as copying 750 GBytes will take several hours.
When the computer has finished copying the files, you will get the '-bash-3.2#' and the cursor, or something similar.
That's it, now you can close the terminal and restore from the latest backup on your time capsule. When your computer is up and running again, you can copy as many of the files as you need across from the external hard drive using the trusted drag and drop.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers
    Huw
Changed MByte to GByte. Sorry, I started when computers were fitted with 1 KByte.

  • Windows and OSX won't boot after partitioning

Hi so I have a 2012 MacBook pro, it is running mountain lion and I also boot camped it and installed windows 7. I partitioned the hard drives correctly and it has been running great. Today I was on windows and used the disk manager to shrink my windows partition so that I could create another seperate 5gb partition for school. After I did this, my computer was running fine until I restarted it. When the windows logo appears while booting, it freezes and it flashes a blue screen and then shuts down. When I hold down the option key to boot into Mac OSX, the only option that comes up is windows, not even my recovery disk.
How do I fix this? I need to boot into these because all of my school things are on these drives. Please help

Never in my reply did I say I don't use Boot Camp or not to use boot camp. But I don't. And I don't have Windows installed in its own partition. I use a VM for Windows on my Mac for the few Windows programs I run on the Mac.
I started to read that reply but then didn't finish it as that poster was talking about Win 8 and AFAIK right now neither Boot Camp or the driver package supplied by Apple for Windows supports Win 8. Even though it isn't much different then Win 7.
It does create a Separate partition, as does Win 7, that is a hidden partition, just like Win 7 does, but it is different in some ways from Win 7. So that may of been the original problem that poster was having.
In any event I don't think that post will help the OP of this thread. But I may be wrong. Only time will tell.
The big reasons I don't use Boot Camp is I can't stand Dual Boot system and that I can't Re-Partition the BC partition without screwing the whole system up. Tried it, didn't care for it, then removed it and went VM.

You read that thread I provided the OP a link for...don't you use Boot Camp? Got any better ideas?

  • Osx won't boot

Hi there. I'm new here and after googling around I thought it'd be best to ask here. I attempted to use a Fedora Core 6 live cd on my mini. To have it boot up from the CD I used the Startup Utility to select it and rebooted. After ejecting the CD (holding down left mouse button) and rebooting OSX will no longer boot, all I get is a blinking cursor. I suspect it is looking to boot off of the cd/dvd drive. It should be noted that I am using a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo ( I don't know if that is an issue or not.

Insert your OSX system DVD. Start up while holding down the C key.
Once booted off the DVD go to Apple/system preferences/start up disk.
After you click on the HD icon select your HD as the start up disk.
    Reboot.

  • OSX won't boot completely

When my MBP boots it stays at the following state:
The mouse works, the keyboard works, i can change the volume and brightness.
But it won't continue to the desktop, it should auto-login.
Before this happend i've shutdown my MBP by holding the powerbutton for 5 seconds.
Because none of the applications responded and the menubar didn't respond.
I've tried removing preferences & caches of the user. plist files for the loginitems, desktop & windowserver.
I've tried repairing the disk, it was ok, I fixed te permissions.

Reinstalling Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HELP - Xp won't boot - getting blue screen

Just installed a msi 865pe neo 2 board with:
    80mb 7200 ide-100 hd
    kingston 512 3200 value ram
    newest bios 1.9 I believe
ram checks out ok, can not get XP to load
When the splash screen is suppose to show up I get the blue error screen
    with error:
    STOP 0x0000007B (0xf894c640, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
I've looked it up with microsoft and it looks like a conflict with the raid device.
But I have not SATA drives, just my ide drive.
I've tried using P-ATA only with S-ATA disabled and in native mode.
Still nothing.  I've tried just about every other combination in the bios also and still nothing.
One thing that is weird though if I disable the L1 and L2 Cache, I can actually make it to the xp splash screen but then it loads very slow and crashes again into the blue screen with the same error.
Another odity is when I enable "APIC ACPI SCI IRQ" in the advanced menu, my computer will just freeze when the xp splash screen is suppose to come on, but do nothing else.
Need some help or I think I'm gonna get another motherboard.  I'm really fed up.

If you are trying to install now, try this in order:
1 Increase ram voltage to 1.8
    2 Try just one stick
3 Try with hyperthreading disabled (still with 1 stick)
    Well all the above.
Also when I boot off the my xp hard drive it give me that blue screen, also when I try to run the XP install disc I get the same blue screen.  I've even tried to boot off a USB ide drive that had windows xp installed on it, but the same blue screen.  I've looked up the error code on microsofts web site and it says something of the sort that there could be a conflict between the raid device and my ide controller.  I have no sata drive!!  I'm so sick of this motherboard.  I serously am thinking about returning and buying something else if I can't get it working soon.

  • HELP - G5 won't boot at all

Last night I heard a strange beep and everything froze up. I waited, and Safari crashed and the OS froze up again. Since I hadn't restarted in nearly 3 weeks I decided to just hold the power button down to restart. Since then, I get to the grey apple screen with the progress circle and it hangs there. After about 30 seconds to a minute the fans start spinning really fast and I end up holding down the power button.
I've read througb this forum as well as several Mac forums and have tried everything people have suggested for similar problems. However, I am unable to boot from a CD, when I try to enter single user mode it the screen hangs on some code after about halfway through.
Any idea what the problem is, and any suggestions to fix it? The Apple store isn't open today due to New Years, and I desperatly need to get this working, both for my job and peace of mind. If you can't offer any suggestions, do you think that this is a hard disk crash, and if so what are the chances of being able to recover my files? Or does it sound like a memory issue, in which case how fast can it be fixed?
    Any help/comments appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi
It does not necessarily follow from what you're saying that there's a problem with the main board? From what you're describing it's possible you may have a faulty/bad RAM Module or two? Shutdown the mac and remove all the modules apart from the factory fitted ones. Try again. Go through all of the RAM Modules (if you have any more?) until you've eliminated them al. Whilst you have the side door open disconnect the IDE cable for internal optical drive. You can easily reconnect it later on. It's also possible a failing/bad graphics card is causing the problem . If you have another one handy you can eliminate that as well. Disconnect the hard drive also. Apart from the keyboard and mouse you should disconnect anything else that's externally attached.
Have you tried a PRAM reset yet?
Are you getting a boot chime at all?
Have you tried booting using the AHT Disk that your model came with yet?

  • Need some help, system won't boot now.

Yesterday, I was having trouble getting WinXP installed on my SATA drive...after I tried some stuff to no avail, I decided to call it a night.  When I got up, I went to boot up the system and now all that happens is the 1 LED light flashes and the CD-ROM LED light flashes(and even these don't happen all the time).  Nothing else happens, fans don't start etc.  So I need some help on troubleshooting this prob.  When I do start it up, the D-bracket LEDs flash 4 red also, just flash like the other LED lights.  My first guess would be that the PSU is dead?  My PSU is a Antec Truepower 380W.  Any help is much appreciated.

Believe Bas; As he is 100% Correct, as even 18 Amps is not anywhere enough on the +12V Rail nowadays, I mean I think the New "Minimum" Should be No Less than 25 Amps on the +12V Rail, With these new Powerful Vidio Cards, that Require thier own "Molex" Power Supply Connected to them (As most of these Top Nvidia FX, and ATI Pro's) Need and they can demand up to 6 Amps themselves, I mean, these Cards Have 400 and 550MHZ GPU's on them with over 100 Million Transistors, Not to mention the Extra 256MB of High Speed Graphics memory, Add this with a New 64BIT CPU, and a Sound Card, and a Couple of S-ATA's in RAID, And the 1GIG of High Speed System RAM, and you Are At or Over 18 Amps Already , And we are not even talking CD and DVD's or the At least 4 Fans that you should have ...Yep I for one say the Day's of the 18 Amp Min. Rating for the +12V Rail are Gone Forever...Why do you think that all the Really Good PSu's have At Least 30 Amp Ratings on thier +12V Rails......And in the Case of Enermax, They even went as Far to Start Building thier PSU's With 2 (Dual) +12V Rails ...Thats right, Now they have a +12V-1, and a +12V-2 , Now the CPU gets it's OWN Dedicated +12V Rail, and the System Gets the +12V-2 Rail.......I just got the new Enermax for my 3RD Rig that I'm Building (Dual Opteron 248) Rig , with Bas's Help of Coarse.....But For $99.00 US  It was the Best Money spent yet, so much, for a little Price, as the Antec Units are More expensive...And I hear that they are doing a little Cheating on thier Amp Ratings these Days ..Ask "Wonk" he will tell you...  ..............Sean REILLY875
