Help overclocking E8500 on P7N Diamond

Hi to all!
Can you help me to overclock my system, please?
My workstation:
- E8500
- MSI P7N Diamond bios v1.2B2
- 8 GB Kingstod PC6400
- 2 SLI  nvidia 8800 gts 320 mb
- ctrl DELL PERC 4E/DC
- 2 scsi hd 300 gb (not in raid)
- 5 hd sata 2 (5 x 1 Terabyte)
- Windows xp 64 sp2
with the default vcore (1.1) the system boot and load win64 at 1550 fsb and multipler by 9.5x; if I try fsb 1600 or 1604 (for the supposed fsb hole) the system does not boot. I've tried to up the vcore and the 8x multipler with the same result.
I don't think that is a cpu limit (all e8500 go to 4 ghz), but my inesperience to set up the parameters on the "cell menu", like all voltage parameters.
Thanks a lot
by!
Gian

What were your voltages? You're going to need a lot of nb volts with all that ram in there. The only thing I have is some screens from e8400 bench runs. I'll put them here so you can look. These were with beta bios 1.21. I was pushing voltages quite hard for this although I can't remember the exact numbers. That mobo doesn't have that cpu now. I'm running a q6600 in the P7N diamond now. I may have some photos of those bios settings though stored on my drives, I'll try and look tomorrow.

  • Overclock E8500 on P7N diamond nforce 780i

I have read the guides here, and beginning to understand more about overclocking. However I need to know if there is any chance to overclock my cpu with only a stock cooler. I have not touched anything inside the Bios yet, besides shutting off EIST.
    My system:
    BIOS Type:  AMI
    BIOS Version: V1.2
    System BIOS Date: 07/17/08
    MSI P7N Diamond, nForce-780i SLI, Socket-775, ATX, DDR2, 4xPCI-Ex(2.0)16
    Corsair  TWIN2X 6400C5DHX DDR2, 4096MB Kit w/two CL5 2GB
    Dimm's, E.P.P and DHX DDR2-800 (400mhz) 64bit SSTL 1.8
    Memoryt:
    @400mhz   5-5-5-18   (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 22-42-3-6-3-3   (RC-RFC-RRD-WR-WTR-RTP)
    @270mhz   4-4-4-13   (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 15-29-3-5-3-3   (RC-RFC-RRD-WR-WTR-RTP)

    XFX GeForce GTX 280 640M 1GB XT GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDCP, 640MHz
    2x Western Digital Caviar GP 500GB SATA2, 16MB 7200RPM
Cooler Master Cosmos Silver m/850w PSU, 2x12cm Fans, Aluminum
My goal is only to reach 3,3ghz. And if this is possible, I will be very greatful for som pointers in which bios adjustment that might work. And yes I know the limits is different from each uniqe processor, but with only a stock cooler those limits is not an option for me.
    Thank you in advance
Edit: My idle cpu temp in coretemp is 42c, in realtemp 35c. At load in Orthos small FFTs - stress cpu, I get 58c in coretemp.

Now I did run Orthos small FFTS -  stress cpu, and got this message:
Type: Small FFTs - stress CPU Min: 8 Max: 8 InPlace: Yes Mem: 8 Time: 15

  • Overclocking E8500 w/ P7N Diamond

    Hi Guys,
This is going to be one of those newby posts that asks how to overclock, so I figured I would forewarn you.
I have read some guides about overclocking, mainly the ones at TechPowerUp and the ones here, but I dont really understand them. I have also read my MB manual like 3 times, and dont understand all of it either haha. That makes me sound like a moron, but I swear I'm not(although me defending that I'm not a moron may give you some doubts). I know my way around computers pretty well and built my current system myself.
So I figured it was finally time to overclock. I have a antec 1200 case, and am using a Corsair H50 in a PnP config w/ 80CFM fans to cool the CPU. In a month or two I'm going to get more fans to put in the case, and 2 Scythe Kaze Ultra fans(110cfm) for the Corsair for better cooling and an Antec Spot Cool for my NB.
One quick question I have right now is about the multi. I've read that a lot of boards allow you to adjust the multi, but in my cell menu I only see adjustments for the RAM speed and FSB(as well as the voltages of course), but not the multi. Am I just reading something wrong or can my board not directly adjust the multiplier?
There are a few settings which I thought I would tell you guys off hand. My NBv is at 1.275, .075v higher then stock. I had to do this to stablize my RAM after switching to my GTX285 from a 9800 GT2(thanks to Jack t.n btw for all his help is helping me get that RAM problem sorted out). Spread Spectrum and DOT Control are disabled.
Right now I would like to start experimenting with overclocking, and try to get my CPU to 4GHz[eventual goal is 4.5GHz and RAM atleast 1200MHz(would love to go to the board max of 1400MHz) from 1066MHz] or so until i get those new fans. I know that you have to adjust the fsb, the core multiplier, CPU voltage, and NB voltage. i also know that some MB settings must be changed to better OC. What I would like right now is some help in determining what some basic settings would be to start out with. I've read that the easier way to OC is to adjust the CPU multiplier, and when that becomes unstable to raise the CPU voltage, but adjusting the multi would reference my above question.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.
EDIT: I studdied some guides a little more carefully and realized that you cant raise the mutliplier, and that what i thought was the multiplier wasnt at all lol. So I know that you have to raise the FSB in increments, and then when it becomes unstable to raise the CPUv. How do I know how much and how far to raise the CPUv? What is the max voltage spec for my CPU? i saw 1.3625v on an intel spec sheet but im not sure if I was looking at the right thing.
    Current Highest Stable OC:
    3.919GHz
    FSB:     1650
    CPUv:   1.3
    NBv:     1.375
    DRAM:
    1066MHz (1063 actual)
    DRAMv: 2.1

    Quote from: HU16E on 02-January-10, 11:43:02
If it posts after raising it. That's why it is done in small increments.
So as long as it posts and boots into windwos I shouldnt worry about the voltage unless it fails Intel Burn Test, right?

This is ancient history, but there may be something useful in it; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=118301.0 With some use of the search feature of the forum, you may find other posts that may be of help. Take special note of posts concerning the NB on these boards. An Antec Spot Cool helps a lot to keep it cooler.
thanks for finding that thread! I had done some searching previosuly, but was using overclocking as a search term and not OC'd. I see that he changed the multiplier for the cpu, which I didnt know you could even do. I just dont understnad why he actually did that instead of just doing controlling the speed using the FSB though. I also don't understand why he fiddled with all the other voltages. I thought that the only votlages that contributed to CPU stability was CPUv, NBv, and RAMv. If I have to mess with all those other v settings I'm not looking forward to it.
As to keeping the NB cool, I definitely plan to get an Antec Spot Cool for it. I'm thinkin about spending some of my birthday money early to get all new 110cfm case fans, as well as a ram cooler and the spot cool for the NB. I'm hoping that until then though, i can push the CPU to 3.8-4.0 w/o the extra cooling. What do you think?
Last night before going to bed I raised the FSB to 1433(from 1333) and didn't touch any voltages. Booted into Windows and ran 5 runs of IBT just fine. I'm thinking that tonight when I get home from work I will raise the FSB another 100MHz and boost the CPUv .1 or so, and the NB .025(to raise it to an even 1.3) and see if it can run through five more runs of IBT while im in the shower. Hopefully it won't have any problems, and I can hop right into DA:O lol.
EDIT: What do you guys think about using a 40mm fan such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999701 ziptied directly to the HeatPipe Assembly instead of the Antec Spot Cool?

You know what ... this forum is crap ...you ask for help and all you get is a load of crap replys that help in no way at all thnx for wasting my time. And for the record if you guys accually knew how to overclock my cpu with my mobo then u would have just told me with no problems but instead u have wasted about 3 days of my time waiting for usuful reply and help from a decent person ! good job.
Ill figure it out myself as iv already gotten it 3.0 stable with reading only what other ppl used on there bios with short amount of trial and error.
Wow.  Some people just really don't get it...
We all know how to overclock CPUs, of course.  Why are you biting the hand of the arm trying to help you?  I used the P7N Diamond for several months, and also provided a lot of the overclocking tips and hints, along with every beta/performance BIOS MSI released.
If you want me to do the overclocking for you, and rid you of the experience; hell, I have no problem with that.  The P7N is a simple board to overclock until the NB gets too hot.  Max out the FSB term, don't touch the GTL voltages, and adjust the CPU Vcore only when needed.  If you cannot follow anything I said in the last sentence - go back to stock settings.
Do you even know how to stability test an overclocked system?
If you don't want to learn, you're most likely not going to get beyond 3.2 GHz.

  • P7N Diamond first boot problems!

    Hey guys
I have just installed my new MSI P7N Diamond mobo into my computer, but the thing won't boot !
All the stuff i had in my system worked fine with the old mobo, so it should also run fine here, but sadly it doesn't :/
    Here's the specs:
    E8500
    MSI P7N Diamond
    2x2 gb Mushkin Redline
    320Gb seagate HDD
    2x8800GT
I have tried to reset the CMOS and taking the batterie out, no succes..
    Please help !
    /Razbojnik
    PS. Merry Christmas ^^

Well, I have sent my GFX to RMA, I think that was the problem.
I tried to use the second gfx as my primary card, but it wouldn't boot, so I thought it was broke..
The strange thing was that it worked fine with my old motherboard (Asus P5N32-E SLI)..
Still haven't got any info on my RMA status, but I believe I'll have it back again in a week or two..
While I'm writing here, I should point out, or acctually ask a question.. I had some system freezes and some BSOD (about 5 times in the last month).. I think the BSOD thing is cleared and that it was a Vista thing, but my system stille freezes sometimes when I watch movies, or play games on my com.. Still haven't found the cause  :/

    Flashing the safe way:
Use Method 1 or Method 2, both will do the same job.
    Use it at own risk.
    Before you flash!!:
Make and ensure PC is stable before proceed, remove any OC if you have.
Flash it via DOS mode by booting from USB key, CD/DVD.

Noobish question - is clearing the CMOS absolutely necessary after a BIOS update?
Yes, it is recommended to clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU.  There might be small changes in data structeres between BIOS Versions.  Not clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS settings after flashing can have unexpected side effects.
    Quote
I'm not really comfortable poking around inside my case apart from swapping a graphics card or hooking up power cables.
You don't need to "poke around" anywhere.  You simple need to unplug the main A/C power cable from your PSU, which is outside the case, hit the power-on button to drain capacitors and then press the little button on the back panel of your board for a couple of seconds.  That means you don't even have to open your case to clear CMOS.
    Quote
So again, would NOT clearing the CMOS jumper thingy prevent successful update/boot?
If you restart your system after clearing CMOS, the BIOS will display an error message and prompt you to reset your BIOS settings, that's it.  Nothing to be afraid of.  The only risk involved is the BIOS Update itself, not the CMOS Clear.

  • HELP! - Voltages for Overclocking Q9450 on the MSI P7N Diamond (780i chipset)

Hey.  I fully understand the settings as far as frequencies go, but am a total voltage newb.  No matter what I do I cant seem to get a stable vista load up with my voltage settings.
Please help me by providing suggested voltage settings for my hardware.
    CPU - Intel Core2Quad Q9450
    RAM - 6 gigs of DDR2-800 rated at 2.1V

My cooling is sufficient, and I have the BIOS version 1.2
I also turned off all of the overclocking not friendly functions, example: spread spectrum, and DOT, ETC....
I am trying to run my CPU at 3.2 GHZ (400 mhz before multiplier)
my settings I want are (as shown in the P7N bios)
    System Clock Mode - Manual
    FSB clock - 1600
    DRAM clock - 800
Please help me by providing the proper voltages for my setup
Everything I need is marked by "???"
    CPU Voltage - ???
DRAM Voltage - (already have, its 2.1)
    NB voltage - ???
    SB voltage - ???
NB Memory reference voltage - ???
DIMM memory reference voltage - ???

NB GTL reference voltage - ???
    FSB terminator voltage - ???
SB sleep mode voltage - ???
PCI Expander PLL voltage - ???
For the sake of you not typing too much, if you specify voltages, any that you do not specify will be assumed to be left at [AUTO]
PLEASE help me by providing some voltages for me, as I have absolutely no clue what to put for them.  If you have any questions about my hardware feel free to ask, and any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED

adjusting gtl ref. voltages isn't very difficult, but it is probably best to learn the basics first.
So, basically, increase the fsb a little. So, for example, from 1333 to 1400. See if it's stable, if it isn't try bumping up vcore one notch and try again. If not try Northbridge. Then later move on to stuff like the fsb term.
Test stability using prime95, there is a 64-bit multi-core aware version floating around somewhere. Try the ftp server linked to in the "hot use prime95" sticky on here.
Tbh with your OC you shouldn't need to touch any other voltages, or really use the gtl ref settings. What exactly is "sufficient" cooling though? Stock?
*EDIT: on a side note, just so you don't think I'm deliberately being awkward not telling you specific voltages, they wouldn't do you any good. Every cpu/mobo can handle different freq. at different voltages. Also, use cpu-z to check on your actual voltage and make sure you don't raise it beyond 1.3625 (I think that's right, it's 1.36something anyway)
Thanks for the tips.  The reason I wanted to jump straight to FSB 1600 is because the MSI p7n is really picky and only likes 1:1 ratios.
My "sufficient cooling" is an aftermarket heatsink, high performance thermal paste, and MASSIVE airflow through my case.  If you want specifics, its the Scythe Zipzang
Quote from: AaronYuri on 08-October-08, 09:05:16
CPU Voltage - No one can tell you this.
NB voltage - Depends on what frequency you want
SB voltage - What's your HDD setup?
NB Memory reference voltage - Auto
DIMM memory reference voltage - Auto
    Memory terminator voltage - Auto
CPU GTL reference voltage - Depends on speed and other voltages
NB GTL reference voltage - Same as above
FSB terminator voltage - Depends on CPU voltage and CPU/FSB clock speed
SB sleep mode voltage - Auto
PCI Expander PLL voltage - Auto
My recommendation is do some reading. Guessing leads to dead hardware.
6GBs smells like mixing modules... Or do you have 3 modules?
First of all, I already stated the frequencies that I wanted in the top post, and fairly clearly at that.
CPU shouldnt be too hard to figure out, as there are very few to choose from.  I'll try to get back to you on that one
I have 5, 7200rpm SATA 3.0 drives.  It sometimes runs with only 4, as one is a hot swap.
My ram IS mixed, unfortunately.  I'm using 2x 1gig sticks, and 2x 2gig sticks.  However, both sets have heatsinks, and are rated at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2t, timings.  (2.1v)
I AM running them in dual channel.
If this helps you suggest voltages please do, If not, then I will just have to start trying using nihilkrist's suggestions.

  • Help overclocking p7n diamond.

I need alittle help overclocking . I can overclock with the duel core center ok with a fsb of 300 , putting memory at 900 and chip at 2700. When I go into the bios and try doing any changes to the fsb it will not post . I think i did everything to dissable speed stepping , but I am really green at this. Any way I tried to match what I was getting in the duel core center fist. Set the fsb frequency to 1200 left the memory linked , with the multiplier at 9 just as a starting point . It will not boot . I have to reset cmos every time I try adjusting the fsb any at all. Temps look good. I am stumped.  2.7 is really stable with good temps. I just  really want to get this baby higher . All equipment is in my sig and the q6600 is a GO .
     Thanks
    Brandon

Did a little better today , but still not much success. I can lower the fsb all day long and it will boot just fine. Pchas01 using your settings it did better than it ever did , made it all the way to the windows loading screen before it locked up . Usually it just does not post at all. Tried several different settings and the closest I made it was using Phas01 settings. I did not adjust the vvt because I honestly did not know witch voltage setting to mess with  .Like I said still really green at this . Could this be a ram to cpu ration problem ? Memory is running at 5-5-5-18 timmings and is stable at those timmings with a fsb of 900. Like I said in a post earlier  I can overclock to 2.7 with the duel core thing and run prime 95 with crashes.
Maybe this would be easier if I let you guys know what I am trying to archive. Right know until I learn more about this stuff all I want to accomplish is a little ole 3.0 over clock .When I gain more knowledge I am sure I will try to push the envelope, but thats all I want for know.
     Thanks for you help
    Brandon

  • Overclocking 45nm Quad and P7N Diamond

Hi everyone.  I have a Xeon X3350 (same as a Q9450) and I'm trying to OC it.  But it's just not working...at all...not even a little.
Default clocks are 333x8, but I can't even get it to 350x8.  I know it's not the processor because I've seen people get it up to 475x8 without issues.
The processor has a VID of about 1.02, and I've given it a +.125 Vcore bump and NB voltage is at 1.45.  It POSTs but Windows won't load.
FSB term is at 25 and I've varied CPU ref from the defaults up to 60, still nothing.  I should be able to get it to 350x8 on stock voltages, but it doesn't work.
RAM is at 5-5-5-15 2T @ 800MHz and 2.1V.  BIOS is 1.0.  (I know there are newer BIOS, but shouldn't 1.0 work with just the modest OC?)
I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.  Thanks.

Greetings, I couldn't help but to comment on this.  I think you wom't be able to overclock further with the P7N diamond.  I had mine and I went back to my trusted P35 Platinum.  I had problems with it with my E8500, tried all the beta bios and to no avail.  Last week I got my new Q9450 and the same thing happened.  You just cant have stable overclock.  You will get different kinds of errors and bsod's.  Now, with ol" P35 I'm running my Q9450 @3.4 with just 1.21 vcore. There were a few guys  here who were lucky to run their Q6600 but these are "old" procs.  I wish they could try running E8500 or Q9450 and see if they get the same results.  I think MSI has problem with the board.  Why is it that they have not released any complete and certified bios for the P7N diamond???  It's been months and I got tired going to their website and no new bios.  And the four beta's are still not that good to work with.  The board looks good, the layout is good... but it sucks.

  • P7N Diamond / Q6600 / HELP!

    Intro
Good Afternoon. I have searched everywhere for information regarding the issues I’m having and haven’t found anything, so I though id ask here. About a year ago I built two computers using the exact same parts (one for me and the other for a friend of mine). My friends build has been running perfect since day one, with no issues or errors. Mine however, has been a problem since I turned it on. I don’t want to post a confusing wall of text, but want to give as many details as possible, so here goes.
    Problems
    1)   Will not run with optimised settings since first install - Just restarts before starting windows. (Only boots ok when FSB is set to 1333)
    2)   Looping Restarts – After powering on it will restart itself between 3-6 times after boot screen, then successfully boots onto windows ok.
    3)   Crashing to Desktop/BSOD’s – Mainly runs ok when on desktop/applications/internet. Games are the issue. (Fixed some errors by replacing CMOS Battery. Main BSOD error “Hardware Error – Please contact your manufacturer”
    Previous Tests Done

    Additional Information:
As mentioned earlier, my Q6600 is in the process of RMA so can’t really do any testing with Bios or anything else. Another thing… When on the phone to Intel’s Technicians. They said that due to the board only having 1.8v DIMM’s, they said because my RAM was 2.1v, it is those that are causing all my issues. In relation to the RAM spec on the listed computer configuration, could anyone confirm that? As I asked Corsair before the build and they said it would be fine.
I hope I’ve given all the required details, needed for a conclusion to my problems or even a guess.
Overall, Thankyou for reading. Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Mh, did you mistype something, or are you talking about overclocking when you mention "optimised settings"?  I mean:  FSB 1333 is already higher than the native FSB Speed of a Q6600 (=266 MHz or 1066 MT/s effectively).  Can you explain again what you mean?  Because if you really overclocked the FSB/CPU to 333 MHz FSB CLock Speed (and higher) all your problems may simply be the symptoms of non-stable overclocking settings (which is nothing unusual).

Yes and no.  The native speed of your modules is DDR2-800 @1.8V +/- 0.1V (JEDEC Standard) which means that such a setting is compliant with the industry specifications for DDR2 Memory and should pose no stability risk to the system (given that none of the modules are faulty).
DDR2-1066 on the other hand is an OC rating that requires you to raise the voltage to 2.1V and thereby above industry specifications.  Stability problems @DDR2-1066//2.1V are not unusual.  So in that perspective, the stuff the Intel Technicians pointed out to you is absolutely correct.

  • P7N Diamond overclocking Q6600

Hi all i would like to overclock my cpu now after having the P7N for over a month now and running everything standard.  I have DDR2 800 Geil Memory which is running at 6-6-6-18.  I have read that you need my VID which is 1.2750v. What would be my best settings? Any help would be great thank you.

the thing i don't understand is what am i supposed to set the fsb terminator to? I know the gtlreff volts have percentages to refer to but i have found nothing on the fsb term.

  • P7N Diamond, need help

Hello, i have built a new machine and now after a few days i think my graphic card died. Computer starts with gpu fan at 100% but thats about it, screen is blank.
Havent tried to switch graphic card yet, gonna buy a cheap one tomorrow, i suspect the psu but it should be ok, hmm =)
Anyway my system, i hope any of you can help me out.

It should be able to handle 41A on +12v1 and +12v2 together and max 530W (52.5A) on all 12V at once.
I am not very good at explaining in english but the psu should be high quality and was best rated by a swedish oc site.
Before i bought this i read alot on different sites to find out if i needed 26A on one rail or not and some said it was needed and some said
it works great with just a high quality psu.
I have also tried to remove everything except the graphic card, cpu, memory, and tried it with only 1 stick.

I solved it, thanks for the replies. Dont know what was causing it, i removed the motherboard from the case and it worked.
But there are still some issues, but i dont know what =) I have tried to overlock also but it isnt going very well, i dont know why its failing if it is the memory or if i dont give enough voltage... i made it boot at 4 ghz and the stress test with Orthos failed when memory was involved 8(
The thing i dont get is if i choose manual and set the ram memory at 800 mhz, does it stay there when i pick a higher fsb or does it secretly overclock =)
Also everytime i boot up vista 64, just before the login screen appears, when things work it fades nice to the login screen but when something is wrong it looks like a sick sack or how its spelled, pattern in black before the screen appears, even if i dont overclock at all.
Does any of you know what voltages that i should stick with? I would like to have the whole bios at manual but i dont know what most of the commands do, like the terminator, gtl settings =)

  • Q9650 overclocked on P7N Diamond

    Hello,
I currently have an E6700 processor overclocked to 3Ghz because I had increased the FSB from 1066 (266) to 1200 (300) in my bios. My memory is Corsair DDR2 PC8500 encoded at a frequency of 1066 MHz. My PC is running fine without problem.
As a hardcore gamer, I want to change my processor for the Q9650 3Ghz 12MB Cache FSB133 wich is compatible with my motherboard P7N Diamond bios 1.5 beta. I want to buy it and overclock it to 3.6 GHz frequency through a bus 400 (in place of 333) that will done 400Mhz x 9 = 3.6 Ghz.
Could you tell me that it will work without trouble before making my purchase?
Thank you so much for help.
    PS : I have 2 GTX260 SLI

Jack is so correct, every single CPU and MB are individual entities and you may be lucky or you may not be. I was lucky with my 9550 on a P45 chipset board.
Just check the price of that CPU though and compare that to the latest i5 series and specifically the i5-750 which in  turbo mode goes to 3,2GHz and that is without any OC. For a bit more than the 9650 price you can probably get the i5 (quad core as well) and a new generation MB with all the improved efficiencies and lower power consumption.
Something to consider. You could probably sell your mb with processor and get the new MB and Processor for the same "out of pocket cost" that it would cost you to buy the 9650.
    Read the following article: http://www.techspot.com/review/193-intel-core-i5-750/
Good idea, but the P45 MB would mean that I could not take advantage of my 2 GTX260 in SLI mode, only the crossfire technology is supported.

  • Users running the P7N Diamond and QX9650 please weigh in. I need help...

OK, I'll start from the beginning.  I had an EVGA 780i mobo, which ran a Q6600 at 3ghz quite easily.  Well, I decided that I had money to burn so I ordered a QX9650.  It would not work on the EVGA, the cpu voltage and cpu fsb voltage would not adjust no matter what I tried.  So, I popped the cpu into my kids rig, which has a DFI X38 mb and the cpu worked perfectly, voltages adjusted, multiplier adjusted, etc.  During the RMA process to EVGA, I got an MSI P7N Diamond to run SLI with.  Stuck the cpu in it and away I went into Vista 64, all happy.  I had to bump the memory voltage up to 1.95 volts, but that was it.  I then decided to raise the multi from 9 to 10.  I set it, warm booted and tested it in Vista.  100% stable.  2 days later, I attempted to turn my computer on.  No post.  I had to power off/on very quickly to get it to post, at which point I got an error message that the cpu vid had failed or there was a mismatch with the cpu to fsb ratio, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults.  I e-mailed MSI and received beta P05 and it was just downhill from there.  I couldn't cold boot at all, stock settings, OC settings, voltages adjusted, it didn't matter.  So back to the shipping bios.  I got a new beta this morning, dated 2/18, and it was the exact same.
    Issues with both beta's:
    1.  Cannot cold boot.
    2.  Logitech G15 acts erratically prior to entering Vista.
    Things I have tried:
    1.  Raising Vcore.
    2.  Raising NB/SB voltages.
    2.  Raising FSB Terminator voltage.
Nothing helps.  MSI simply told me not to OC and run at stock and that there was no problem.  Is there anyone else out there that has this cpu and mb?  If so, can you post your experience with it and let me know if there is something I am doing wrong or could try?

Below is the actual transcript that I had with MSI on this issue.  As far as they are concerned, I don't need to change the multiplier on my QX9650.  (Start reading from the bottom up for the actual order of the conversation)
    Quote
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Then, there is no problem with the mb.
End User 02/19/2008 There doesn't seem to be any issues with usb while on using the shipping bios, I only see it when I flash to the beta bios'.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 If the stock bios also has the usb issue then try: Have all USB device connected to the rear USB ports that are build onto the mb and retest with all USB header on the mb be removed from any front USB connections or adapter connections and retest. If all steps have been tried and problem still persists then please kindly refer to our website for manufacturer warranty RMA info/request: http://www.msicomputer.com/support/CustomerS.asp
End User 02/19/2008 No change. I cannot even cold-boot at stock settings with this. Also, it still kills my Logitech G15 keyboard randomly. i have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to power up, and that is only after I boot into Vista. Back on the shipping bios for now at stock settings. Please, if you would, keep me informed of changes or progress. Thanks.
End User 02/19/2008 Thanks! I will poat back if it helps or not.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Beta bios v111 attached to this form.
End User 02/19/2008 Is there any other beta bios' that you have that could help? The P05 didn't work out so well, maybe you have a newer one that I could try? It seems odd that it is only on a cold boot that I have issues and not on warm boots. I am willing to try anything you got at this point!
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Sorry, but MSI did not see any issue with using QX9650 processor.
End User 02/19/2008 So are you saying that as far as MSI is concerned, there is no issue with the QX9650 and the P7N Diamond motherboard? I am not asking you for advice on hot to OC it, I am asking you if you know of the issue and are looking into it to try and correct it. If you do not think there is an issue and are not going to investigate it, then I will be very disappointed.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 If there is no problem with standard bios and no OC then you can refer to other website/forum for OC suggestions or settings. MSI does not provide these setting/suggestions since it can cause damage to the components.
End User 02/19/2008 Also, I am unable to use the Dual Core center, as I am running Vista 64. It does not load properly when using this OS.
End User 02/19/2008 As of now, it boots and runs fine with the shipping bios and no OC. But, why would I have paid such a high premium to get a QX9650, that has an unlocked multiplier, if I cannot use it? Is this strictly an issue with the newer 45nm Intel processors or is it something else? If not being able to use my cpu's unlocked multiplier is "ok", then I may return the board for a refund.
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 What is the problem when system uses the standard bios and not OC?
End User 02/18/2008 Is there a fix on the way or is it just a problem with my hardware? I have it back on the shipping bios and it is at least cold-booting now, as well as my G15 is working. I upped the NB voltage a hair above auto, maybe this has somethinng to do with it?
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 Use the standard bios and use software to OC: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=utility&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1372
End User 02/18/2008 I was way too quick to say everything is OK. I now have cold boot issues aplenty. 9 times out of 10 it will not post on a cold boot, but will warm boot. I have to power off then on real quickly to get it to post at stock speeds. Also, my Logitech G15 started to act erratic with the P05 beta. I am back on the shipping bios until I hear from you.
End User 02/18/2008 Thanks you for the beta. I flashed to it, cleared the cmos and set everything back up and now I have a new problem. Even though I have disabled the EIST function in the bios, it still seems to be on. i am using cpu-z version 1.44.1 to monitor the multiplier and it randomly shifts between whatever I set it to and 6. It is even doing it when the system is loaded, ie playing games. Please, help!
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 Beta bios attached to this form.
End User 02/18/2008 Everything is stable 100%. But, on my QX9650, I set the multiplier to 10X to run at 10x333=3.33ghz. It was fine until this morning. I turned the computer on and it would not post. I powered down and repowered it up and it siad the cpu vid had failed or errored, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults. I entered setup and the multiplier was set back to 9x. I left it there and am ok now. Is there a beta bios that helps out operations with the newest Intel 45nm processors, such as the QX9650?
I have absolutely no issues in Vista itself, it is 100% stable.  It is only on a cold boot that I have serious issues.  And yes, I got 3 in a row, went to work for a few hours, then came home and bam!  No cold boot.  Also, I don't know how comfortable I am raising the vcore that much, as 1.21-1.25 is the normal operating range.  1.3625 is aweful high.  Now, with the 65nm quads, that is more in the range of what would be needed, but no way should it be necessary to pushh this QX9650 to a meeger 3.33ghz.  As far as temps go, I have the processor watercooled, so no worries there.  I am away from home now until Saturday morning, so I can't test anything until the weekend.
    Thanks alot for the responses!

Somebody had luck to overclock Q9300 on P7N-SLI Platinum ? please post info

Try with mem settings auto and only adjust Vdimm to vendorspecs.
Did you try BIOS V1.1 from MSI : http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
This did solve some memory issues.
If so try, if you can, QVL memory and see if problem persists.
Hope this helps  , good luck and keep us posted
Also be sure that your on manual and not linked, this will give problems too, when fsb divider gets higher then memory divider.
Furthermore, by using non qvl mem, the NB and fsb vtt are very depending on eachother.
I had the same with my board  , the only difference with yours is the cirque pipe cooling and an extra chip for yorkfield support  , but it is do-able
