Help, PE8 says: "Display performance will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card"

I receive the following error message in the lower left corner of the screen upon starting a new project in PE8 or opening an existing one: "Display performance will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card or driver."  It seems that Premiere Elements 8 is not recognizing and hence not using my GPU to render files when burning DVD's.  Unlike PE4, which utilized my GPU ( I know this because I've installed GPU-Z which shows me when a program is utilizing my GPU) when encoding files and the like, PE8 takes more than twice as long to render the same files and projects when I attempt to burn to a dvd.  Not to mention it utilized my CPU at around 98% for the duration of the 2 hour burn, heating my CPU to dangerous levels.
I have the latest Graphics card driver for my Nvidia GTS 250: v195.62
I've called technical support and they sent me to the following troubleshooting article, but I've tried everything to no avail: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/514/cpsid_51427.html.
Here are my computer specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, SP2
Intel Quad-Core Q6600
3 Gig Ram
4 Hard-Drives
Nvidia GTS 250 Graphics Card
blah..blah..blah
P.S. I can't re-install PE4 as it was bundled software that came with my wife's computer..and I consequently tried to uninstall/reinstall to my system with no serial number...Also, I don't want to revert back to an earlier nvidia driver on principle (b/c PE8 should work as advertised with the latest nvidia drivers) and more importantly, doing so might interfere with my games and other programs.
One last thing.  PE4 utilized my GPU, I downloaded the latest trail version of Cyberlink's Power Director Software and it utilized my GPU, even windows dvd maker uses my GPU...However, I've spent a lot of time with PE4 and I love the features and the interface and would rather work with the latest from Adobe.  I'm using PE8 for a lot of video projects and I don't want to have to waste time watching it take 2 hours to render a DVD when PE4 did the same project in 45 minutes.
Any advice regarding this problem would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

It could be that the message is benign. Premiere Elements does not use your graphics card to render your video. That's a function of your processor.
Your graphics card effects your onscreen display only. So, unless you're seeing a significant drop in the quality or function of your onscreen display, I wouldn't worry about it. (The program is likely switching automatically to a compatibility mode.)
It could be that a Windows Update is conflicting with something in your graphics card's driver -- and it will eventually be corrected in a later driver release.
So, unless your display is degrading when the program switches to compatibility mode, just ignore it and keep working.
Version 8 is a massive resource hog and, for reasons I can't figure out, takes twice as long and uses twice as much power to accomplish the same things that previous versions accomplished using very little power. I'm not sure what Adobe's strategy is with this.

  • Error message: Display performance will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card or driver

    Greetings:
I've been getting this message lately, using clips of .avi footage from a non-HD Flip Video camcorder. First off, my computer has beyond what I'd need to edit this footage—it's an HP dv 3085dx notebook with 6 gigs of DDR3, Intel Core i7 processor, NVidia GeForce GT230M graphics card. It's a loaded machine. That's not the problem.
The problem is that the red circle with the X in the lower left-hand corner of the screen shows up and gives me this message moments after I start each new project. However, when I click on it, the message is grayed out and it doesn't give me the option of checking the details. Read on to find out how this is affecting my videos....
When I playback unrendered clips, the playback works fine. After rendering, however, the clips play back with jerky glitches and flashes that weren't there during playback of the unrendered footage. I've downloaded the latest driver (195.81), and that hasn't improved anything. Here's a link to a video I posted on YouTube, to illustrate the types of glitches I've been getting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFeCh6q1JTQ The glitches are particularly apparent during the stretch between 0:20 and 0:28.
I'm still pretty new to this craft (read: I haven't tried other software yet), so any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
P.S. Might there be some downloadable Premiere Elements software updates that would alleviate the problem?

Thanks for your response. My notebook has a 7200 RPM 500 GB hard drive with about 320 GB free. The .avi files were brought in to PrEl from a WD Passport external drive with about 60 GB (of its 400 GB capacity) free. The project was also being saved to the WD drive.
I have a Windows 7 64-bit system. I have all the latest versions of my NVidia graphics card driver and Quick Time. I also downloaded the PrEl 8.0.1 update from Adobe. Hardware/software-wise, I'm pretty sure I'm in good shape; I'm thinking there might be some settings that I might want to play with.
The camcorder is a very basic Flip Video USB camcorder by Pure Digital Technologies (Model #: F260W). It records in .avi format; when you plug the USB in, you can access an application that allows you to save the videos. I use this to save them to the local drive (C:) and then I copy the .avi files from there to the WD Passport. The Passport drive is where I bring in the media into Premiere Elements, to keep space free for the OS to run smoothly.
The project is set up this preset: NTSC > Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorders > Standard 48kHz. As stated earlier, the error message shows up pretty much instantly. To be exact, it shows up about 5-30 seconds after I start a project. Unrendered clip previews playback fine. The raw .avi files also play fine in Windows Media Player. The glitching occurs after clips are rendered.
So, I think that pretty much covers the four steps from the article you linked me to, plus your questions in the above post. There really isn't much of a workflow before the error occurs. I simply drag a clip into the timeline, render it, and the playback gets that splotchy glitching. Now, it could be that the WD external drive doesn't have enough space or speed to run a Premiere Elements project, but if that's the case, why would the error message point to the graphics card?
    Thanks again, truly appreciated.

  • Still getting Display Error in PE8: "Display performance will be poor due to Incorrectly..."

I recently updated my OS from Windows Vista (32-Bit) to Windows 7 (64-Bit).  When working with PE8 in Windows Vista, I would receive the following error (signified by a red X in the lower left hand corner of the screen) whenever opening an existing project or creating a new one "Display Performance will be poor due to incorrectly operating graphics card or driver!"  To my consternation, I'm getting the same message after updating my OS with a CLEAN INSTALL of Window 7 64-bit.  I have the latest, stable Nvidia card driver 196.21 and have installed the latest patch from Adobe 8.0.1.  I'm interested to see if anyone is having this reoccurring GPU-incompatibility problem after installing the new patch.
Any solutions that don't involve simply turning off GPU playback are much appreciated.
As this is not a "workflow" problem I don't see the need in displaying an exhaustive list of all of my Computer assets.  However, here are the basics.:
    Computer: HP Pavillion M9150f
    Processor: Intel Quad-Core Q6600 2.4 GHZ
    Ram: 8 GB
Video Card: Nvidia GTS 250 1gb Ram, Latest WQHL Nvidia Driver 196.21
I have no other Video-Editing software installed, not even windows movie maker.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Adobe's silence on the issue leads one to believe they simply cant fix it.
That could well be a reason. However, if history is any indicator, Adobe is always tight-lipped about any plans, or works in progress, until they are ready for "prime time." Recently, a lot of podcasts and blog-spot pieces began appearing on changes in PrPro CS5. Many of these are directly related to GPU acceleration with certain nVidia cards, and a totally new render engine, Mercury. Still, other than some observations from select personnel, and a few demo videos, the complete details have not come forth. Also, there has been caution that Mercury might NOT make it into CS5. Only time will tell. So silence is not new from Adobe, and there could be various reasons for it, from re-coding being an impossible task to the patch/fix not being quite ready for release. PrPro CS4 got three significant updates, plus updates to Encore and AME. It was only about one week before those releases, that a single word hit the fora.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
HERE was the "sneak peak" on Mercury.
HERE is a thread on nVidia support for it.

  • Will Adobe CS5 work with Intel HD Graphics card 3000?

I am thinking about buying this laptop. http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilion-dv7-6163us-17.3-Laptop/product_343565
Will Adobe CS5 run on it OK?

Both of the HP laptops that you mentioned will be quite sluggish in running CS5, even compared to a cheap $400 desktop:
    1) Neither of those laptops have more than one single internal hard drive, which is already below Adobe's stated minimum requirements. Adobe requires a minimum of two discrete fast hard drives (no partitions) in order to run CS5 at all. Unfortunately, neither of those HP laptops have an eSATA port at all. (Those HP laptops have two USB 3.0 ports - but USB by itself doesn't support RAID at all.) Nor does either of those two laptops have any provision whatsoever to accommodate nore than the included internal hard drive.
    2) Based on the CPU alone, your first choice of a laptop with an i7-2630QM is better - but only if it also has an Nvidia GPU with 1GB or more. The CPU in your second choice, an i5-2410M, is only a dual-core CPU (in fact, all mobile i5's are only dual-core) - and no system (laptop or desktop) with a dual-core CPU performs as well in CS5 as even a mediocre system with a quad-core CPU.
    3) Neither of those two HP laptops come with (or is even available with) a GPU that supports MPE GPU acceleration. The first choice has only the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics while the other comes with an onboard AMD Mobility Radeon GPU. And as we all know, both of those systems would have run CS5 only in MPE software-only mode. There is a plugin to allow CS5 to utilize the QuickSync feature of the first laptop (the second one cannot utilize QuickSync at all because it uses a discrete GPU) - but that would have speeded up only the encoding times (it would not have helped rendering times much if at all).
    4) All consumer HP systems - both laptop and desktop - come pre-loaded with a ton of bloatware that cannot be easily uninstalled (or more precisely, software whose uninstallation still leaves behind pieces of it that actually slows down system performance and/or makes it run less stably). Worse, neither laptop includes a system restore disk (all of the restore files are on a locked hard drive partition that can only be accessed by one of HP's authorized service facilities). HP will sell you a recovery/restore disk, but that will cost you an additional fee.
    5) Both of those systems come with only 6GB of RAM. In the case of laptops, 8GB is recommended if you're going to run CS5 much. Although the systems theoretically support 16GB of RAM, those two laptops have only two DIMM slots, and there are currently no compatible 8GB modules on the market.
    6) Finally, the internal hard drive spins at only 5400 RPM. Laptop hard drives, as a rule, are slower than desktop hard drives (sequential speed wise). You'd be lucky if that 750GB 5400 RPM hard drive can sustain even half the sequential speed of the slowest current-production "Green" desktop hard drive.
As a result, both of those laptops would have been slower in the PPBM5 benchmark than most (if not all) of the desktops on the PPBM5 results list.

  • My Mavericks Partition Will Not Boot due to "Incorrect Number of Thread Records", But Windows 7 On Same Drive Does

I got up from my chair at the office to make myself coffee and came back to find my computer powered down. "That's weird," I said,  "I don't remember turning the computer off." I pressed the power button and the loading bar appeared below he apple symbol (as it should do on a bad shutdown) but alas, when the bar got to the end, there was a loading ring, and the computer immediately shut down.
I then held down the alt key and was able to boot up in my Bootcamp Windows 7 partition (on the same hard drive) but I am unable to do a few things with my OS X Mavericks partition
First off I have the entire partition backed up, as I was able to access all of the files and the drive using my windows partition (drive appeared in "my computer" I was able to copy paste everything just fine). Secondly when I boot in the Recovery HD, the "Macintosh HD" partition appears unmounted, I can't erase it because disk utility says that the disk could not be opened. When I try to verify it, it says that the drive needs to be repaired, but when I repair it, disk utility tells me "Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files."
tldr; I cannot erase the disk, I cannot repair the disk using disk utility in the Recovery HD, but I can see the disk in windows running on the same drive... so at least I have that going for me.
I tried starting up in verbose mode and it failed after 3 tries, I attempted to use the method described here http://african-heart.blogspot.com/2010/07/fixing-invalid-node-structure-in-mac.h tml?m=1 . I have run the method 6 times and nothing has worked. Ideally I'd like to wipe the "Macintosh HD" partition and start again, but I cannot seem to do that through disk utility
are there any methods for fixing the partition/wiping the partition that I am missing?

The same thing is happening to me. I had just click on a form submit button and suddenly the video went dizzy for an very little instant, almost couldn't see it, the screen went black and a message warning the system crash appeared. After that, the system rebooted with a progress bar under the spinning circle and it turns my Mac off when it is fulfilled.
Trying the native Apple hardware test right now to see if it can identify any problem.
I'll post any news here in at most one hour, after the test finishes.

  • Please Help - Screen corruption while in Aperture - graphics card problem?

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed frequent screen corruption within the confines of the image that I am currently editing. The corruption only occurs when in Aperture. The corruption occurs as multiple thin (one pixel?) horizontal lines of random color and random length that occur in random locations within the image. If I force a re-calculation of the image (such as change white balance) the random lines will disappear, only to reappear somewhere else. The actual image (after export) is never corrupted, only the display. Recently Aperture has started to "hang" in random ways, sometimes freezing the whole machine, sometimes crashing, sometimes beach-balling.
This sounds like a hardware problem to me, but the standard Apple hardware test runs without errors, as does an extended memtest. Setup: Mac Pro, 5GB, SW fully updated to 10.4.11 and Aperture 1.5.6. I tried re-seating the graphics board to no avail.
Are there any programs that I can use to test the Radeon X1900 card?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks David,
I did some more research and it appears that quite a few of us (unlucky) users with an early version of the Radeon X1900 graphics card are now seeing failures that appear to be due to poor heat dissipation by the graphics card. There's a huge thread on the subject here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195969
The problem with random display glitches doesn't show up for most people until they upgrade to Leopard, which puts a larger strain on the graphics card than Tiger. I am still running Tiger, but the glitches show up for me when using Aperture, which of course uses the graphics card more aggressively than most other programs. I assume that Aperture increases the heat which causes the glitches.
I tried cleaning the dust out of the Radeon's heat sink, and I added a tool (smcFanControl) that lets me manually override the default fan speed. By keeping the card's temperature lower, the glitches have gone away. If I let the temperature rise, they come back. Looks like I'll be needed a new graphics card.

  • Installed 2nd graphics card in HP Pavillion Windows 8.1, but displays remain blank (no signal).

    Model #: 500-314
    Product #: F3E92AA#ABA
I just upgraded to a new HP, and need to run 4 displays.  I purchased a 2nd video card (Radeon R7 240), installed it, overcame the secure boot issue, but the additional 2 displays are blank.
When I check for the graphic cards, it only shows the AMD Radeon R7 Graphics card.
Also, the R7 240 CD with the drivers, does not open. when I click on it.   It just shows the little blue circle like its working on opening the program, but it does not open the program.   So I went to the Radeon website and downloaded the drivers for the R7 240.  It installed Catalyst, but still nothing.
What can I do to make this work?
    Thank you

    Hi:
When you install an add on graphics card, the onboard video is automatically disabled and cannot be enabled.
That info has been left off of the product specs page.
You can check to see if there is a BIOS setting to enable the onboard video but I doubt there is one.
I can't help you with why you are having issues with the add on card.
All I can say is that if you did not first uninstall the graphics drivers from the onboard graphics before you installed the new card, that is probably the problem.

If you choose instead to adapt the DVI to your new display, this adapter, US$129, is suggested by the Mac [display] Cable Chooser:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H5236ZM/A/kanex-c247d-single-link-dvi-to-mini- displayport-converter?fnode=78
    The Mac [display] Cable Chooser:
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables/cable-chooser
Mac or PC 5770 uses only one of the two aux power cables, so it can be doubled up -- but it is two slots tall, so it will block the slot above, and may not run at full speed when not in slot 1.

  • Quadro FX 4800 graphics card & 24" LED Cinema Display

I just ordered a new Mac Pro (Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon; 12GB (6X2GB) RAM) with the 24" LED Cinema Display and a Quadro FX 4800 graphics card.
The Cinema display only has a Mini DisplayPort connector and the graphics cards only has two Dual Link DVI-I connectors.
I have read that there are two adapter options available:
    1. Gefen DVI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter

My question is this: If I use one of these adapters to connect the 24" display, will I be losing all the benefits of the Quadro FX 4800 card?
No. The adapter just converts the output video format. It will not affect the behaviour of the graphics card,

mercury engine still be enabled? I know its kinda "no budget, want all qn" Right now I dont wanna buy a card as am plannin to buy new system later..
    Thanks
    Gigarigh

Yes, of course, you are correct, Harm.  I was over-simplifying.
I Took the OP's "enabled" to really mean "accelerated", and in that sense, it will not work as without the necessary graphics card there will be no acceleration.
I can certainly support your third paragraph, having just moved from a four-year-old system with a quad 3 GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM and a hacked 460 GTX graphics card, to a Sandy Bridge E system with a 3930 CPU, 32 GB of RAM but the same graphics card and HDD set up (for the moment). Your oft stated "molasses in winter" describes my old system pretty well from my present viewpoint!
The old system coped with the fairly gentle HDV, provided I kept the number of assets down, but threw a hissy fit if I tried 1920 HD, even with the Matrox (I know, I know!) I-frame codec.
    Gigarigh,
You would be better off upgrading along my path - motherboard and processor first, using as much as you can of your old system for now, as this allows much better scope for future upgrading.
