Help!  Photo organization and archiving.

I just switched from a pc to a mac and am having nothing but problems. I personally regret ever buying it. I even bought one to one care, but live 6 hours from a mac store and so feel like I'm struggling in the dark. I hope so much I can find help here.
I have thousands of photos that Mac transferred over in a data transfer. All my photos are in albums and sub albums that I title by month, year and event. All of my albums were transferred, but do not show up as albums in iphoto. When I try to find my photos from the finder, or while uploading to facebook or flickr, iphoto either doesn't show up or it lists albums by years I didn't create (such as 2034, 2020, 1993 which doesn't even have my 1993 photos in it).
I thought I would have to recreate all my albums, but the few I have tried to recreate also don't show up when trying to access the photos from other sites (like mentioned above).
I also don't know why I can't access the photo albums from finder (similar to accessing photos from the c: drive on a pc, so I have control of how I want to back them up, or if I want to access them from another source)
I also have not found a way to save changes to photos or save to a different location.
I also have not found a way to scan photos from my scanner into iphoto.
Is there another photo program beside iphoto one can use on a mac that would allow these functions?
These are just a few of my frustrations. Please, please help.

Some basics for you:
You can still work your photos on the Mac in the same way that you did on Windows. Just set up your system of folders in the Finder (the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer) and off you go. The advantages of that system are that it is simple. The disadvantage is that it's very limited.
iPhoto is different from that. It's a database for organising your photos, not your photo files. The Idea is to let iPhoto manage the files and let you get on the photos. The big advantages to this is that there are pretty much unlimited ways to organise your files - date, keyword, titles, ratings, camera, arbitrary selections that you make your self, whatever - plus the photos are accessibel throughout the entire OS. They are also easy to back up.
First off: to deal accessing the Files for uploading or whatever:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I also haven't been able to find out how to scan a photo into iphoto. I've searched all the menu's, the help menu's and apple forum.
That's because you can't use iPhoto to scan. What you do is scan with other Software (Image Capture (in your Applications Folder, for instance, or whatever came with your scanner) and then import the scans to iPhoto (File -> Import, Drag and Drop to the iPhoto Window etc)

  • Photo Organizer and Editor

I'm looking to go away from some of the free editors and organizers, but finding the solution that is best for me is challenging.  For a basic photo / video editor and organization what product would statisfy my needs? I have probably a few thousand photos but also need a way to categorize and organzie them.  Any suggestions and direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor is now available on Mac App Store to download. It is Editor only and does not have Organizer similar to PSE 10 Editor on Mac App Store.
Some key points are here - http://blogs.adobe.com/pselements/adobe-photoshop-elements-11-editor-available-on-mac-app- store/

  • Photo Organization and the Future

Here's my concern - utilizing aperture to organize my projects and albums, departing from managing the file structure (which is getting impossible to keep up with) I have to assume that Apple and Aperture will always be around.
What if in the future I want to switch to Light Room, or go back to windows? I have nearly 35,000 photo's now, and I imagine I'll have more in 50 years but I have no idea if Aperture will still be around in 50 years and If I stop paying attention to my file structure, I'll lose all the organization behind my masters.
Aren't any of you concerned about the distant future? Apple could pull the plug on Aperture; somebody else could come out with somethign better; etc.

No, I'm not concerned about my file structure. The fact that Aperture takes care of that for Managed libraries doesn't mean that there is no structure. The library normally resides in the Pictures folder. If you open the package you will find the folder for all your masters - the structure there can be easily decoded. There are lots of other files used by Aperture when manipulating or displaying images. If you need to get your original photo images at some time they are there. If you shoot in RAW then you might need to worry about some future time when no one supports your camera's version of RAW, but that's a different issue. You can also, in the distant future, export your edited photos to a new location.
If you have a Referenced library then you are responsible for the storage, backup and structure of those images.

  • PSE12 Organizer - can you copy photo from one folder to another and import copy into Organizer and still have original in other folder

I have been using folders to organize all my pictures and I will copy photos from folder to folder, often having them in 2 or 3 folders based on use.  I tried to copy a photo in Organizer PSE12 from one folder to another and you can only move it, that means I can only have one copy of the photo.  That is fine if I am using tags and want to search for it, but I want to have mult copies in mult folders. Organizer will recognize that it is there but it won't import it into the new folder. Until I move it, it stays in the original folder.  I can drag it out of Organizer and drop (copy) it into a new folder fine, but it won't show in organizer in the new folder.  Is there any way to copy and have multiple copies show up in multiple folders?

    Hi,
The organizer works on the principle of not having multiple copies of the same photo.
If you have multiple copies spread in different folders, then making changes to one doesn't affect the others. The use of tags and albums are there to give different views of your photos.
You can't have multiple copies with exactly the same name even if they are in different folders. You could select a photo and duplicate it (File -> Duplicate) and then move the copy into a different folder but the name will be different.
If you want different folders for a specific reason, it is possible to use albums to collect the group of photos and then export them to a new folder outside of the organizer. You can also rename on export which is useful if you want to arrange the photos in a specific order.
    Hope that helps a bit.
    Brian

I downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements.  I then launched Photoshop Elements Organizer and imported approx. 28,000 photos (including some videos).  A window opened indicating that many of the photos had tags, and asking if I wanted to add the tags.  I said yes, and the process began.  When it reached 60% a window opened indicating that "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working", with the only option being to "Close program."
I've since tried to open organizer several times, but it goes immediately to "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working".  I was able to open Editor, and tried opening Organizer from Editor, but encountered the same problem.
FYI, I have an open case (#0214505556), but have not received the help I need.

This issue is with respect to Elements 13.

  • APP CRASH in 7.0 upon Opening Organizer and Editor - Vista - Help!

When I open my Photoshop Elements 7.0 Organizer, the pictures load and then I get a message that the program is closing due to APP CRASH.
Any ideas why this may be happening?  Is there a limit on the number of photos in a catalog?  I can't imagine that I am over the limit on this.  We have gone through several troubleshooting recommendations including reinstalling the program and it is still crashing upon opening.  Now the Editor is crashing too!  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Unfortunately, there are many reasons why the PSE Organizer might crash, and often it is hard to diagnose quickly the reason for the crash.   Here are troubleshooting steps to try:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Troubleshooting_Organiz er_crashes
Given that both the Organizer and the Editor are crashing, start with step 4, installing the licensing-service update, and if that doesn't help, try the others.  Even if you think you've tried something similar, repeat the step exactly as described.

You have data corruption.  restore your phone and set it up as a new device.  Not from backup

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Help! I just want my photos back and I know they are somewhere!

Hey all, So last November my iPhone 4 was stolen and I replaced it with a 4s. Verizon told me I could not get my pictures back no matter what, HOWEVER, now my 4s is telling me it cannot back up to icloud because there is not enough storage. I looked at my usage adn 4.3GB of my 5GB is being taken up by my old phone, the 4. This leads me to believe that SOMEWHERE my photos exist (i went to maui last summer and all i want are my photos) because that was really the bulk of what was on my old phone. It says my iphone backed up the day it was stolen, but where would it have backed up to if not on icloud? I went to icloud.com and see you can't access photos. But somewhere my photos still exist! Please please help if you can!!!

Verizon would have no idea whether your iPhone was backed up or not, so whoever you spoke to was talking out of their hat.
You can set up your new iPhone to Photo Stream and that should not affect anything currently on the iPhone. Restoring from a backup will, of course, so before you try that step you'll want to copy any new data somewhere where you can get it back once you do the restore.
    Regards.

  • How many photos can you load into Organizer and Editor

How many photos can you load into Organizer and Editor at one time.  I receive the error message, "Unable to Import Files", which says "You exceeded number of files that can be selecteed and imported at once...."  What is the number?  Secondly is there a way around this for either the Organizer or Editor to work on thousands of photos at the same time?
    Thanks

I have never heard of this particular limit before.
Please understand, this appears to be the limit you can import into the Organizer at one time -- you can have as many photos as you want in the Organizer; but apparently you have to import in batches rather than all at once.
I don't think it applies to the editor; and I can't imagine wanting to have more then a few files in the editor at any one time ... even if you could open 2000 photos in the editor at once, what sense would that make?

  • We are deloying IPhone 4s models in our organization and I am trying to setup a one way sync from Google to IPhone? Help

We are deploying IPhone model 4s in our organization and we want to have a Global addressbook. I have setup with Google using Gmail and accessing the contacts however this provides a two-way sync. I need the setup to be a one-way sync from Google to IPhone only!

I use the same id and password as I want them all in the same place.  I have tried other solutions offered here like turning off contact, saving to the phone and turning them back on and merging.  still no contacts go to icloud.

i was on windows 7 and i had to format my computer i put windows vista on and when i downloaded itunes and sync my iphone i lost all my photos music and apps that was on my phone,my itunes account says i have got to accounts on two computers?? is there anyway i can get anything back? please help me. i have tried restore to back up but it is the same????

If they really meant that much to you, they would have been copied off to a computer at the earliest possible opportunity.
I personally find it amazing that people get so upset when pictures "accidentally" get deleted and then scream about how important they are.  You wouldn't leave important paper work lying around to be lost/damaged/stolen, so why take a chance with important pictures on a device that can so easily be lost/damaged/stolen, or deleted by a child.

Is this iPhoto on your Mac?  Are you referring to the photos that were in your iPhoto LIbrary prior to the upgrade to iPhoto 11?  If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If that's not what you're referring to then you should describe what is happening in more detail. Remember we can't see your Mac or your iPhone so need detailed and accurate descriptions of what you're experiencing.
Also we need infomartion like do you have an iCloud account and are you logged into it on all of your devices, iPhoto and Mac? do you have Photo Stream enabled on both.
