Help Please - Accidentally Deleted Private Folder

Please could someone help.
I have accidentally deleted the Private folder in the root of the HD
Now OSX will not boot.
The folder is sitting in my Trash folder and I would like from the Boot CD Terminal to copy back from the trash to the Macintosh HD/ location
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Mim

Not quite: If MimUK's account shortname is (for example): mimuk
then it would be within that account's Trash, namely, you'll have to (yes) boot from another volume (not sure this will work booted from CD, but it might), *mount the drive in read+write mode*
ie (possibly requiring sudo, depending on circumstances):
sudo mount -uw /Volumes/nameOfTheDriveInQuestion
sudo mv /Users/mimuk/.Trash/private /Volumes/nameOfTheDriveInQuestion/
Moral of this story: don't make hidden folders visible for reasons just such as this
And in any case, don't delete something unless you know full well what it's for.

    Hi all,
I accidentally did a cmd-a in my address book and deleted all my info :0( I then synced my iPhone thinking the contacts would populate the address book, but now I have lost the information in both, is there any way back?

Hey B, Now that you've taken a deep breath, any chance a backup may reside in all that storage I'm looking at in your profile?

  • Accidentally deleted /var folder, now recovery utilities not responding to trackpad/keyboard!

So I did something completed stupid, and now have a big problem.
I accidentally deleted /var folder and emptied the trash!!
Now my MBP is stuck at the grey start up screen with the apple & spinng wheel and won't start up..
The weird thing is, now when I enter recovery utilities, everything displays fine except I cannot click anything! The mouse pointer moves but won't respond to clicks! Same with the return on keyboard. Arrow keys work to move among 4 options on os x utilities (time machine/ reinstall/ online help/ disk utility) but when I hit enter, no response! The trackpad & return key works fine up until the point where the mbp asks which language to run the recovery utilities.
All my data is backed up online, and now I just want to reinstall os x and start using my mbp again!
I tried reinstall with an installation disc by holding down 'c' on start, then I hear the installation dvd spinning for 3 seconds, then it would start ticking and won't do anything else for a few minutes until I force shutdown.
Please!!! Can anyone help me?? How can I reinstall os x??  I would really appreciate!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you in advance.

I know it's late but maybe it will help other people.
I ran into the same issue and none of the solutions listed by apple helped.
I booted into single-user mode and I read the log in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/private/var/log/system.log, it was full of errors like theses
    Dec 30 18:03:28 MacBook-Air locationd[352]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 454: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000sm00006d/C/ modes[2]=0700: No such file or directory

The system actually tried to create directories in /var/folders but the directory /var/folders did not exists, so I created it:
    Under single-user mode:
    mount -o update /
    cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
    mkdir var/folders
    mkdir var/folders/zz
    reboot
And it booted just fine !

  • Accidentally deleted trash folder

    Hello,
I have searched everywhere trying to find a solution.  I had one folder on my desktop that had several subfolders inside of it.  I was deleting some desktop items and accidentally deleted this folder as well and then I emptied the trash folder.  I unfortunately never set time machine up on my iMac.  I also purchased a program to try to restore my files with no success.
Does anybody have any suggestions?  I thought about trying to restore it to a prior time, but everywhere I am reading says that you need to have backed everything up with Time Machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you deleted it then it's gone. Only thing would be if you had a backup then you could recover

  • I accidentally deleted a folder of music from iTunes.  I have Match, and now it seems deleted from all my devices.  How can I get it back?

I accidentally deleted a folder of music from iTunes.  I have Match, and now it seems deleted from all my devices.  How can I get it back?

Were you in iTunes or the Finder? If you were in iTunes what exactly did you click? You say "a folder" but the only "folders" in iTunes contain Playlists and deleting a playlist will not delete tracks from the iTunes library.
When you deleted the music were you prompted to delete the tracks from the cloud? If so, did you do so?
Were you prompted to move the files to the Trash. If so did you do so? If you did have you emptied the Trash?

  • System won't boot after accidentally deleting /private/var/folder

My Macbook Air is running OS 10.9 Mavericks, and I accidentally deleted the /var folder after seeing it taking lots of GB's from my storage.
Safari, Mail and a lot of applications f'ed up itself, like safari saying it couldn't connect to the folder.
I tried to put those folders back, and it gave me an Unauthorized Caller alert. I tried doing it again, and the folders froze, but I can still move my mouse. I restarted my computer by holding power 7 seconds, and tried to restart.
Somehow, I saw the grey Apple logo startup screen, heard that startup chime, and 10 seconds later, it shut down. I tried doing it again many times, but to no avail.

So here's my problem. I'm using intel iMac and yesterday my Mac didn't boot( grey screen etc). I thought that it was because I used force shutdown. I used (option-cmd-r-p) to reset and after that, Mac booted up into some kind of "first time startup screen"... So I used installation DVD and restored my previous backup of the system by using the TM. After that the Mac booted and now all I get is folder with a question mark? Now what....?
your profile suggests that you are running Tiger. if that is so, you shouldn't even be able to use time machine (introduced with Leo).
    can you please clarify ...

No, they haven't. Go to http://www.epizenter.net/e07_plugins...php?47589.post. They're all there, at least when I go there in my browser. EDIT: Ouch I see what you mean. But If you search Preloaded Wallpapers, they do show up. Anyway, I'll put them here. Sorry if I'm doing anything wrong guys, haven't seen many photos in the forums. • Accidentally deleted Utilites Folder

    Hi,
I have accidentally deleted my Utilities folder in 'Applications' thinking it was a folder for Adobe CC which I wanted uninstalled.  Trash Can has been emptied, also, and to pay for my sins I never had Time Machine turned on, never thought I'd need it.  Oops.
I have a late 2012 (i think) iMac 27". It does not have a disk drive so no good using Disc to reinstall anything. Is there anything I can do?  To be honest I didn't even realise anything was wrong until I tried clicking on 'About This Mac' and got nothing.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Phil

Restore it from your Time Machine backup or boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) on startup and reinstall OS X. This re-install will not overwrite your data files, however you should ALWAYS have a backup in place before doing so.

  • Accidentally Deleted App Folder

I moved many of my most-used business apps to the Tools folder, then, while trying to move it I accidentally deleted it. Where did all the apps go and how do I get them back, or can I restore the old folder? The online message says the apps are moved to the bottom of the home screen but my home screen doesn't have any apps, only folders. Help appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. On your homescreen, press the Menu key > SHOW ALL, so that SHOW ALL is checked.
    2. Look in EACH folder on your device... Applications, Instant Messengers, Downloads, etc.
If you still don't see it, look at Options > Advanced > Applications. Do you see it listed there?

  • I accidentally deleted a folder from my dock.

I had created a folder containing various things and had it in my dock. It mainly contained stuff from my old mac. I wanted to drag it to my desktop, for what I cant even remember. But to my horror, it vanished. None of the files that I know were in the folder can be found when searching spotlight. Of course my time machine backup is sent off for a warranty repair and I havent gotten it setup. It blows my mind that it would just delete the entire folder without verifying your action and then not even stick it in the trash can. Its just gone. Please help!!   Thanks

Normally the dock is used for shortcuts. For example, you drag a frequently used application to it from the Applications folder. It's still in the Applications folder, but there's also a shortcut to it on the dock. When you want to get rid of one, you just drag it off the dock, which is what you did when you tried to move it to the desktop.
    Anyway... you can try this:

  • Help!  I deleted a folder, and now my iPod doesn't work!

Being the new owner of an iPod, I was unaware that I was required to use iTunes to manage data. Instead, I browsed the iPod's files using Windows Explorer and manually deleted a folder of pictures. Now my iPod no longer works; it displays a link to the Apple support site. My computer no longer recognizes the iPod (once it is connected, it displays the removable drive in My Computer, but doesn't show up in iTunes. iPod Updater freezes when the iPod is connected.), so I cannot restore it. Please help!
    PC Windows XP Pro

had the same problem aswell mate, dont worry its not too complicated
1st step is to get ur ipod into disk mode and open my computer. once here right click on removable disk and select format. if this works that means ur computer is atleast responding to your ipod and the problem should be over and done with.
if that doesnt work goto step 2
step 2 is, when you turn your ipod on does it make any sounds??? if it makes some beeps and little sounds you have a problem with your hard disk in the ipod. not to worry if your ipods new its under warranty and you can send it back.
step3 is to call apple on 1-800-275-2273 between 9 am and 9pm. follow the prompts and talk to a consultant.
the same thing happened to me, so everything above is what i was told from an ipod consultant. good luck and dont stress.

  • Little help please regarding deleting files and folders...

My wife has a MBP and has accumulated some old items in her documents folder that she'd like to delete. She has a USB mouse but the "right click" doesn't appear to work. She's running 10.4.11 and can't reveal the files in icon mode to facilitate dragging to trash. Certainly there is a sequence of keystroke commands that will allow these files to be effectively trashed, but our "control/delete", or "apple/delete", or "option/delete" doesn't do the trick after highlighting the subject file. Help please! TIA!

To delete a file or folder, high light it then using the keyboard type Command Delete and that will delete it. If you have multiple files and/or folders the same keyboard commands apply.

I must have accidentally deleted the History folder from the Bookmarks/Favorites bar in Safari (iPad 4) and I currently have no way of viewing my web browsing history on the actual iPad. Private browsing most definitely is not the problem, as is the suggestion I keep seeing for this type of question.

  • Help, I accidentally deleted the parent tab set.

I accidentally deleted the parent tab set from my application, and cannot find anyway to create a new one. Has anyone had this problem?
    Oracle - 9.04R2
    ApEx - 2.2.0
    Browser - Firefox
    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Hi Scott,
unfortunately I made a stupid thing, being too smart and updating the FLOWS_020200.wwv_SOMETHING_tabs record, modifying parent tab of the problematic tab to main. Doing that caused the complete application to disappear from the Application builder. I guess some checksums in APEX internal objects were modified and that is the result.
Fortunately I had a recent export of an application, so I didn't loose too much. That also means that I can not help myself with "as of" export.
Could you please just tell if recreating parent tabs is possible by "clicking through apex screens" or should there be some hacking used.
    Zober
