HELP PLEASE! Macbook frozen!
Earlier yesterday I was using my Macbook Pro to check e-mail and IM people using iChat. I also had several Word documents up. Suddenly, my mouse started freezing and I couldn't type anything. My IMs from other people were still showing up but I couldn't move my mouse or respond.
I tried to shut down normally but couldn't. So I help down the power button till it did. I decided to give it a rest for the night. I didn't try to restart until a few minutes ago. When it started up, my mouse STILL wouldn't move and I couldn't type in my password to access my computer.
PLEASE help me fix this. I'm a student and have a great deal of important files saved on my computer. I would be devastated if I lost them.

I suspect you have Tiger - OS 10.4.x
Disconnect all devices from your comp.
Boot from your Install DVD & run the repair disk/permissions option from the Utility menu.
Repairing permissions from the Tiger DVD
Boot up from your Tiger Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

Urgent Help please - MacBook wont eject a disk
Hi, would really appreciate help if anyone can.
I put a cd into the disk drive today and it will not eject it.
It is trying to read the disk and i can hear it but it doesnt appear on the desktop and as much as i try and do it wont eject it.
I read somewhere that there maybe a pin ***** button you can press ... does a macbook have one of these? i can see it anywhere.
Any idea what i can do to eject this nightmare disk.

Only had the mac a week and not impressed so far with this in particular ... driving me crazy!holding the eject button on the keyboard is fine. its just the same as ejecting it from the desktop. using disk utility to eject it is like a forced eject. i had a disk stuck once (the label it had was paper and apparently bulged out and got stuck). i had to use disk utility to get it out eventually after the other methods didn't work.
after you get the disk out you may want to run the hardware test from the osx install disk to make sure the drive is still fine (or just put in another disk)

Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. -
Macbook stuck on white screen with apple logo. help please
I have a macbook (black model) and while I was surfing on internet it is frozen. so I shut it down and restarted. When I restarted, it stuck on white screen with gray apple logo and seems like booting but nothing happens.
after that, I restarted again and put installation disc (leopard) without pressing any key and it opened normally. I backed up os with time machine but in one hour it is frozen again.
restarted again but this time it did not boot normally. so i tried booting from cd with c key, it opened installation screen. I have opened disk utility top repair disk, but when I click on disc image, repair / verify disk buttons are unavailable to click and S.M.A.R.T status is not supported.
After all, I tried to erase and install system several times, but after language section when I click agree to terms and conditions, mac freeze again.
So, I do not know what to do. Any help please?
Note: I already tried PRM and Safe Mode. (after safe mode it took me to installation screen again and nothing changed.)
Any help would be much appreciated!
Uptade: Also, opened system profiler and clicked on Serial-ATA, it seems loading but do not show any info. stucked again! help please

You need to select "MacintoshHD 10.5.8 not "disc image" in order to run Disk Utility and Verify and if necessary, Repair the disk.
That's why you are seeing this dialog.

Also, run the Apple Hardware Test.

Macbook frozen since 10.5.7 upload Help!!
Can anyone help please. I did a software update to 10.5.7 and since it was installed, when I turn on my macbook all I get is my home screen, and the mousepad is frozen, and it doesnt recognise my mobile broadband anymore. what can I do to get it working again. I dont wnat to re-install 10.5.6 just yet otherwise I will lose lots of personal data on it. please please please any ideas
I assume you don't have a backup, so I'll take a moment to suggest that this experience should convince you of the value of making backups before installing system updates. That said you can try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. *Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding*.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
In the future follow some simple steps to successful updating:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions.
2. Make a bootable clone of your existing system to an external drive or another internal drive.
3. Test your bootable clone to be sure it boots your computer.
4. Install system update. In the case of updates to a current version, like 10.5.7, I highly recommend downloading the standalone Combo Updater from Apple rather than using Software Update.
5. After installing the update repair permissions again.
During any system update you should disconnect all third-party peripherals. For desktop Macs only use original keyboard and mouse. During the installation do not run any other applications, don't move the mouse, don't do anything until the installation has completed.
Some updates such as the current one will result in the computer restarting twice. This is normal. -

If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.

I have had to change my email address/Apple ID. My iPad recognises the new detail in iTunes and iCloud but when I go into iCloud through my MacBook Air, it requests a password for the old email account which I can no longer use. There is no Option to be able to change this email/ID detail as I cannot get further than the password request. Can anyone help please - this is driving me insane?!
Go to System Preferences and click Sign Out, select Delete at all the prompts, then sign back in with the changed ID? (Your iCloud data will disappear from your Mac when you sign out and choose Delete, but will still be in iCloud. Provided you are signing back into the same account your data will reappear on your Mac when you sign back in.)

Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using. FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in. This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly. By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you. Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

Safari 5.0.6 repeatedly crashes. MacBook Pro 10.5.8 I've emptied cache and reset to no avail. I've tried solutions found in other threads but the more advanced don't seem to apply to me. Help, please.
Not sure what other tests they could run for me. I've pretty much run all the tests I can using Drive Genius and Tech Tool Pro 5. Is there anything they use that I don't know about??

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

Bought a new macbook and want to manually manage music onto my iphone 4s (as it is already full of music from old windows laptop) but when i click 'manually manage' and then 'apply' i get the message saying it will erase everything already on there. Need help please!
Before you sync your iPhone make sure that all the music that was synced to your phonereviously has been copied to your iTunes on the new MacBook Pro. Then when you connect your phone you will be able to either sync all music or select only those playlists that you want on the phone.

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store. Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays. You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor. If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected. I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

Hi! I got Movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? When I start playing the movie a message pops up and says "a required codec is not available". I tried flip4mac, xvid, divx already and still not playing my video. need some help please!! thanks.
Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player. It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime. -
I am struggling to Partition my MacBook Pro using Bootcamp 5, can someone help, please. I previously had successfully loaded Windows 7 running Bootcamp 4 on the same machine. When I upgraded to Windows 8 I started encountering problems. My trackpad would not work and it required me to load Bootcamp 5" as I was running 32 bit this is not supported by Bootcamp 5 I had to completely delete the previous partition, but now I can't repartition as it goes halfway and says an error has been encountered and Bootcamp cannot partition this drive.
I do not know how to defragment the drive in Apple as I can in windows nor can I clean it up to maybe get everything in neat clusters, maybe somebody can help me solve this problem.Sorry Bobthefisherman, this was not helpful. I had already gone through these pages before coming to you. What I have discovered however is that when Bootcamp Assistant deleted the partition, it did not create a single volume but created three partitions instead which maybe the reason why it cannot create the new part ion parameters I am asking it crate. So I took it to the geniuses at Apple who suggested that I reformat the drive and reload everything again! and this might solve the problem. We'll all know whether this is helpful once it finishes the formatting of the hard drive. This process is taking a very long time to complete so I am leaving it overnight for it to complete. I will keep you updated on progress. I am also told that Apple is struggling with Windows 8 drivers and I may not be able to use that, so I am going back to Windows 7 even though I was beginning to like windows 8 very much.
