Thanks a million!

What about this?
Good brand and a little cheaper:

Would it be worth the $80 or should I just put it toward a used MBP?
Thanks!

  • 2009 macbook running very slow with Yosemite?

After installing Yosemite there was a big change in performance for all actions on my computer. Start up, basic actions around the desktop and all applications are going considerably slower - slower than they ever have with my computer. I've changed a few of the settings, and that has helped, but it's still ridiculously slow. I haven't downloaded any MacCleaner app or anything. Can anyone help me with this?
Here's the results I got from EtreCheck:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook running very slow after Archive & Install

Hey everyone, I needed to reinstall my OS the other day so I used archive and install because I needed to save Ableton Live files. My problem is that now the computer runs horribly slow. Any application I open takes about 20 seconds to load and I get the rainbow 'wait' wheel constantly. I am hoping all I need to do is repair my permissions but i would like some better advice
    Thanks.

    theworkplace:
How much free disk capacity do you have? You need to maintain a minimum of 15% of total disk capacity as contiguous free space. Check to be sure that everything is in place, then delete the Previous Systems Folder. That should instantly free up a bunch of space.

  • My MacBook Runs Very Slow After BootCamp.

Today i decided to install a windows partition using bootcamp. At first I didnt'g give the partition enough memory so i deleted it and partitoned it once again. After going back to OSX i noticed a huge difference in performance. Everything ran incredibly slow and took a long time to process even the simplest tasks. Thinking it would solve the problem i once again deleted the windows partition. I rebooted and things got a little better. I then tried to repair disk permissions and again had little results. Whenevr i have itunes open or try to open it, it causes big problems and everything slows down. The same thing happens anytime i try to play an audio file on any player. However if i keep itunes closed and don't try to play any music things run decently, still slow but decent. But in order for things to stay this way i have to constantly clean my RAM up. If i don't i get left with around 10 MB of RAM. I checked the activity monitor and seems that coreadiod is using up the RAM. The process is staying around 115% of CPU usage. This happens even when everything is closed and i am idle at my desktop.
This is a big problem and i can never have more than about 3GB of RAM free and even then it quickly drops until i'm left with just MB's. My MAcBook is a 15 in. retina MBP with 8 GB of RAM. Before the bootcamp OSX always ran super fast with no problems. There is only one thing i can think of that caused this problem. In my windows partition i downloaded various media players including itunes and winamp. I was trying to basically share my itunes library on the OSX partition over to the windows. To do this i changed the itunes media folder location to the one on the OSX partition. This did not accomplish my task but it did keep that file directory. Also with windows media player i added the same itunes media folder to the list of folders for WMP to access, this also did not work. In winamp i added the same folder and it read my music no problem. I think this is where the problem lies seeing as itunes and playing audio files seems to leave my computer almost unfuctional. The odd part is it doesn't even have to be an audio file in my itunes library, a file completely seperate that i didnt try to add to the windows partition causes the same issue.
I'm not too knowlwedgable on this so i have no idea what else to try. Any help or any suggestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated.

After looking into the problem more, it turns out everything works great until I open itunes. itunes does not open and if i force quit it, that is when coreaudiod starts taking all of my RAM.

  • HELP - Mac Pro Running Very Slow (After Additional RAM Installed)

I have recently upgraded my Mac Pro (2007) and increased the original memory up to 10 GB 667 MHz DDR2-F8-DIMM.
I also added an optical disk drive as the original would not play some of the newer DVDs/DVRs. Believe me, I'm not much of a do-it-your-selfer, but was encouraged by How-To DVDs on the net on how to install memory and the optical drive.
I am using Mac OS 10.5.8 and the original processor is 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon.
Just when I thought all was well, over the last few weeks my MAC has been getting slower and slower. Now, whenever I re-start or shut down, the Mac can take upwards of 5 minutes to come up. It hangs on the blue screen for what seems to be an eternity. Now whenever I use Safari or Firefox, the rainbow wheel spins and spins and this did not happen much before my "upgrade".
If someone would be kind enough to walk me through or educate me on how/why this is happening, I would be very grateful!
    Sincerely,
    Don

Did you try with just the new RAM? what was it, and you added.... 4 x2GB?
    Riser A: 2-2-512-512
    Riser B: 2-2-512-512
The ideal balance is symmetrical sets of four.
Clone your system and run Disk Warrior, reformat your fastest drive for system, and restore with SuperDuper. Or try starting over with clean install, would be useful as an emergency and backup, especially as it seems possibly overdue for some maintenance.
Make sure you have 30-40% free on disk drive, and add more if you haven't to separate scratch and data from system.
Run AHT and something like Memtest or Rember. Memtest you can run 40 concurrently each in its own Terminal window makes it go fast for even 5 cycles.

i have install new hard drive 500gb and i still have 400gb available but my macbook run very slow getting rainbow all the time on screen.
    need help

First boot into recovery and select Disk Utility>First Aid and repair the disk.
If there is no improvement, perform a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1
If there is an improvement, then third party applications are probably the cause of the problem.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Macbook running very slow - just started, HELP

    Hello,
My MacbookPro just recently started running very slow, even doing simple tasks it runs slow. Was working perfect Sep. 8, 2014. Turned it off for the night, then turned it on the next morning and it took about 5 mins just to even turn on. After it finally turned on EVERYTHING just started running opening the internet, Word, Power Point, and even iTunes was running slow. The songs were literally stopping every 30 seconds. My Mac has worked perfect and all of the sudden BAM. I use it for school all the time so its kind of stressing me out. It keeps freezing up as Itype this message unfortunately.
I ran Etrresoft like most ask here are results:
NOTE** - I deleted Hamchi awhile back, i am unsure how to get rid of it because i don't know where to find it, i thought i had deleted everything.

Start up in safe mode and uninstall or update Hamachi.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

    Diagnostics Information: ℹ️

In the actual situation you have much too low Ram (much to much PageOuts), and to little free space on your disk.
But that may be better after taking out some softwares:
    1. in  SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems   remove all entries, with the minus sign underneath.
This does not uninstall anything but just prevents that these apps always run.
Then Restart, this should help already, but before you start any app, do following:
    2. Uninstal the Android software it is not compatible and/or not necessary: lots of issues in Yosemite.
    3. Stop using Chrome for the time being and (in case you do not want to use Safari) use either Firefox or Opera: both are fast and safe and are not resources eaters like Chome. I propose to uninstall Chrome.
    4. I think that you did not install Java after the Yosemite install, but that it was already on your computer. You should search here (forum) for the install of the correct Java install (if you need it, otherwise disable it in the Applet).
    5. I am not 100% sure but I seem to remember that Director Shockwave causes issue, so you could uninstall it.
    6. Delete the AdobePDFViewer plugin from   MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins.
    7. Also the Valvesoftware Steamclean seems to cause issues in Yosemite. uninstall.
    8. I am not familiar with motorola.moto, but it looks as if it is rather incompatible with Yosemite.
    RESTART.
    See if this helps.
Free up some space on the HDD, by hand !, do not use tools or cleaners !
If you do not see any better behaviour, start in the SafeMode, and see if you have the issues there also. If not we have to find some more culprits.

  • Windows 8 Pro running very slow after upgrade

    Hi,
I ve just upgraded to windows 8 Pro (64-bit) from Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) on macbook pro retina 15 but windows 8 is running very slow on my MBP whereas windows 7 was lightning fast. Now in windows 8 i have to wait till my app is active for click and also sometimes the apps take long time to load .. has anyone experienced this kind of problem in windows 8 .. i ve restarted it many times but its not quick as compared to windows 7... bahhhh i was expecting high performace on core i7 2.6 GHz 8 GB RAM machine

Remove the installation and start again, it's Wndows, treat it like Windows.

  • Macbook Pro running VERY slow since Yosemite, why?

Ever since I installed Yosemite my Macbook Pro 2010 has been extremely laggy and slow. It's especially noticeable with several applications running but even without, it is very slow to respond to commands.
What's the problem and how do I fix it?
    Thanks

Here are a few lines from the log messages, I double clicked on a music file which launches iTunes, the problem was at its worst while doing this:

  • MPB mid-2010 very slow after Yosemite upgrade from Snow Leopard

I updated my MPP (mid-2010) from Snow Leopard to Yosemite some weeks back. It is painfully slow since, particularly when Mail is open. I attach the etrecheck output below, but would really appreciate any help in recovering what was not-so-long-ago a very useful machine.
    EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)

Your Mac has been considerably altered from its factory configuration. Given certain modifications, some of which are described below, it is not reasonable to expect it to operate properly.
    1. Back up your Mac. Your report indicates the last backup was performed a month ago. No more backups can be created because the backup volume's capacity is insufficient.
    2. Uninstall any McAfee products. Your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
One or both of these removal instructions may be applicable.
How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac
How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers
    3. Your Mac has been affected by MacPaw "CleanMyMac". Uninstall it, but beware its uninstallation instructions are not completely effective. Depending on exactly what you used it to do, a complete erasure and reconfiguration may be required.
    4. Update OS X. Open the App Store and install all Apple recommended updates.
    5. If you require a VPN I recommend OS X's native VPN, not Cisco's flawed implementation of it.
    6. If you elect to use Adobe Flash Player you must keep it maintained. The version installed is outdated.
    7. If you elect to use Google's products you must accept the detrimental effects they will have on a Mac's performance.
    8. Adware is installed and will interfere with Internet browsing. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.
