HELP PLEASE!!! My hard-drive space is disappearing!!! Over 300GB gone!!!

Hello, I'm a relatively new mac user and I am extremely frustrated right now... My hard-drive space is disappearing at an alarming rate. This problem has already crashed my computer once. I paid $128 to have it fixed by an apple tech. (So I thought) I paid almost $2000 for this thing and it may as well have been a ******* paper weight the majority of the time i've had it! ....My neighbor ran a "utility tool" of some sort called "i defrag", and it shows a file with 269 GB of stuff on it and fragmented like 93,000 times, called..... File name: iNode4949348  Path: /HFS+ Private Data/      ......This must be the problem file. However, this file cannot be found anywhere that I can see in the Finder. Please help... I need my computer and if it crashes again, I'm screwed, as I don't have the funds to repair it. I only have like 27GB left and at the rate it's going that means I will crash tonight or in the morning! PLEASE HELP!!!

Run whatsize and then delete the huge file.

  • Need help finding lost hard drive space on my Power Mac G4

I have a Power Mac G4 that is just about out of hard drive space. Why? I have no idea. I only have about 7 MB left of the 512 MB that came on the machine. I have backed up most pictures, documents, etc... to an external hard drive and have barely anything left on the desk top. Does anyone know what might be working 'behind the scenes' to eat up hard drive space or what I can do to gain any back? I'm not a huge 'techie' so any advice past 'empty the trash' would probably be helpful.
Thanks very much for anything you can do for me.
    Tony

I believe you mean GB instead of MB when referring to hard drive size/space.
    Look at these links.

  • Mac OS 10.6.3 Server Hard Drive Space mysteriously disappears

Was wondering if anyone else has seen this issue. Every so often, my hard drive space on my server goes from about 60 GB available to almost nothing. I have revealed invisible files and do not see any that are hogging that space. I was wondering if it may be a cache file or some other anamoly I am not seeing? Once I restart the server, the space comes back. I do not know enough where to look or what to look for to "catch" this problem in action. I look on Console for messages and see some things happening there, but those messages do not appear to be the issue, but that comes from my limited knowledge.
This "seems" to have been happening since we upgraded to Retrospect 8. It never worked correctly with our tape drive, so I uninstalled and reverted back to 6.1.23. There may be some latent files still running in the background.

It should look somewhat like this:
    xxxx% sudo du -x -h -d 1 /
    Password:
    24K /.fseventsd
    1,9G /.Spotlight-V100
    0B /.TemporaryItems
    0B /.Trashes
    0B /.vol
    17G /Applications
    9,0M /bin
    0B /cores
    4,5K /dev
    1,2G /Developer
    14G /Library
    1,0K /net
    0B /Network
    10,0G /opt
    4,4G /private
    6,8M /sbin
    4,0G /System
157G /Users <------ in this example this folder contains the most GB's
    1,7G /usr
    4,0K /Volumes
xxxG / <------ xxx GB : this is the total for all folders above.
So the results are presented one folder at a time in alphabetical order (?) with the total at the end.

  • Hard drive space literally disappearing while I watch...

    Hi there-
I'm wondering what is going on... I can literally watch my hard drive space tick down to nothing. I keep clearing and seconds later it starts ticking down again to nothing until everything is unable to run.
Where should I start with this?
    Thanks in advance!
    --Jeff

    Hi Allan-
Hard to say what the free space was... It literally changed every couple of seconds until I had nothing left. (ZERO).
I cleared my iTunes library to give it about 40 gb of space - and it's doing okay now - or so it seems.
I have 3.5 GB of RAMM (physical) in the machine.
    Weird... Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Hard Drive Space Decreases Rapidly over the day

I am constantly experiencing a rapid decrease by 5-10 GB over the day in my hard drive space. I have no idea what could be taking up this space as I am usually only working on a word doc, listening to music, surfing the internet. I can only imagine that something is caching on my system in large amounts. The only reason I've come to this conclusion is that after a reboot of my computer, my hard drive space returns back to the levels it was originally at.
Is there any way to determine what is actually caching on my computer and causing this rapid depletion in my hard drive space? I have one of the first macbook pros, so saving hard drive space is a necessity!
    Has anyone experienced this before?
    Thanks!

Use Disk Inventory X to see what's taking space:

Also, check Utilities > Console to see what's writing logs.

  • HELP PLEASE = MY HARD DRIVE DIED!

    Hi peoples,
I am in need of help. I was using my ipod with my laptop and then the hard drive died and I got a new pc (i did not recover data off the laptop - too expensive!).
So, i installed the ipod software on the new pc. And have since purchased a lot of music through the i-tunes store. i cannot get this new music onto my ipod.
Also, previously purchased (and also some music from own cds which i have copied to itunes) is only on my ipod and most of it will not play.
I need to synchronize whats on my ipod to my computer, and also whats on my computer to my ipod...without loosing either set of music.
    Can someone pleeeeease help me???

*I need to synchronize whats on my ipod to my computer, and also whats on my computer to my ipod...without loosing either set of music*
You won't be able to sync your iPod until you have everything that's on it copied back into iTunes. the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
One final thing, if your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an different iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever retrieval method you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Help Please: External Hard Drive not accepting files from Macbook

    My Desktop is a PC.
    My laptop is a Macbook.
My External Hard drive is a Belkin High Speed USB 2.0 External Drive Enclosure Kit.
I am new to the Mac.
The Macbook recognises the External Hard Drive when plugged into a USB port. No problem.
I can drag any file from the external hard drive into the mac. No problem.
But I cannot drag any file from the Mac back into the External Hard Drive. (Jpegs, PSD, Doc etc-no file is accepted)
When I drag the file from the Mac to the External Hard Drive I get this message:
"The item “filename“ cannot be moved because “folder(external drive)” cannot be modified.
I did a get-info on the external drive and got this information-
    'Format: Windows NT Filesystem
Ownership and Permissions: you can only read'
It defeats the purpose of my working on my laptop if i cannot bring the files back 'home' to the Hard Drive-What can I do to be able to bring files back into the external hard drive? Can someone please advise me?
I look forward to hear from you.

if these macbooks are dual core(?) supporting mac and
windows is there not a way for me to work on a
file, save the file in windows and then drag it into
    the external hard drive?
    i guess not?
    Not really.
On a related note and as an alternative, someone posted a way that I didn't think about which may get around having to do all that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=630540&tstart=45
i guess i'll have to go the partition route. all my
important files are on the external hard drive-who
can i trust to do this and how much can i expect to
    pay for it?
I think I would try the above networking route first before playing around with the partition on the external.
I think it should work so long as the external drive on the PC is shared.

  • Does iCloud help me save hard drive space?

my hard drive is always getting too full and this affects performance. Can I use i cloud to store content so I can delete it from my hard drive?

iCloud does not provide general file storage in the manner of MobileMe's iDisk - you would need a third party service to do this. This page examines some options:
    http://rfwilmut.net/migrate3
If you are talking about a lot of data, online storage would be very very slow. You might be better off simply buying an external hard disk and moving data (not the System or Documents folder) to it - though you should never only keep data in just one place, either locally or online. Backups are the key to happiness: someone who has only one copy of data is going to lose it sooner or later - a hard disk can fail, equipment can be damaged or stolen, online backups can fail.
Backup, then backup again. One day you'll be so glad you did.

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.
    Please Help!

You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Hard drive space disappearing

Ever since my Time Capsule has stopped working [which is a separate issue (it says it has become a 'read only' drive)] my hard drive space on my mac book pro has been disappearing into thin air. I went from 15 GB of free space down to 584 MB in less than a week, without me adding a thing, to my knowledge. I know this is vague, but has any one ever heard of an elusive disk space devourer? Help!

Use Disc Inventory X to scan the hard drive and see what's taking up all the space. It's possible some log file has gone haywire and is writing/filling the disc.

I have macbook air mid 2011 .. Now i am losing my hard drive space without any apparent reason..I am not downloading anything not i am adding anything still that i am losing my hard drive space for no apparent reason..pls pls help..

I have never heard of a relation between the enabled state of Time Machine, and boot. Its probably coincidental.
Try booting in Safe Mode (hold down shift key, whilst booting). Then check for apllications in your Users & Groups preferences that are starting up with login. Disable all startup apps, then eanable them one at a time, booting normall. See which app is possibly hanging.
You can also try doing a Repair Permissions and Repair Disk on your startup drive. This must be done within Disk Utility when booted to your Recovery Partition. To boot to the Recovery Partition, hold down the OPTION key while booting, and select the Recovery Partition drive to boot from. Then run Disk Utility.

  • Re-installing Windows 7 with more hard drive space via bootcamp - Help!

I have installed Windows 7 via bootcamp with success. However I didn't give enough hard drive space to Bootcamp (only 6MB available! Whoops...) Can I just delete the Boot Camp partition and start again or is it more complicated?
    Thanks for any help!

Can I just delete the Boot Camp partition and start again
Either do that or use CampTune.

  • Hard drive space disappeared after starting to us iDisk

Before I started using iDisk I had about 80 G of hard drive space. Now I have 7 G!
I have followed other threads and I have checked the Volumes folder and find my home folder there, the iDisk and my external drive.
If I try to delete any of them I get a message that says I don't have the permissions.
I have decided to trash iDisk. How do I get rid of it and get my drive sapce back?
    Help!
    Deanna

the default on my iMac was to auto-back the Macintosh HD to iDisk daily. Well, the HD had about 57 Gb of stuff on it, and the iDisk allows a max of 1 Gb, and even if you pay more, you can only get up to 4 Gb. So, the program copied to the iDisk icon on my desktop. Lost 57 Gb of space ovennight. Finally found out that its a good thing to back up (to your online iDisk acct) a few things that you want to keep. I had a tech walk me through. First, if everything is still as it was on your HD, delete the copied HD from the iDisk desktop icon. Then, you can either DL huge files (like your whole HD to some disks, or in my case, I had a freestanding 100 Gb harddrive, so I used it for the target, and backed up EVERYTHING. Now when I perform a backup, it doesn't add much-just whats new or changed.
