Help please!-new ipod

Hello all, this is my first post. Can someone please advise me on a couple of simple points/scenarios.I have read the recent manuals, but can't seem to find anything specific to these questions.itunes is completely new to me :
I have just bought a new 30gb video for me, and a ipod nano for my daughter.I have just put 200 albums into the itunes library. Before I add them to my 30gb ipod, I want to make sure I don't mess up right at the start.
Question 1. If I just connect my ipod to itunes and let it sync automatically, can I change this to manual at a later date, and then add manually if I wish, or if I let it sync automatically from the start, is that it for all future connections to itunes (is there no going back)?
Question 2. How does this affect me connecting and syncing my daughters ipod nano to itunes if I have synced my ipod to itunes prior to this?
Question 3. Obviously I don't want my 10 year old daughter to have all of what I have saved in the itunes library. Therefore I'd like to create a seperate bit to add her cd's to the library and add manually to her ipod. What would anyone advise is the best way to do this. Otherwise, If I don't create a seperate folder, then surely when I add /import one of her cd's onto the computer, it's just going to go into the main library which I don't want. What I'm saying is that I'd like to gave the main library for my stuff, and a seperate folder for her stuff without it being in the main library - because then surely if her stuff is in the main library, then when I go to sync my ipod again at a later date, it's going to dump her stuff on my ipod also? Yes?
Question 4. I have also just bought a new laptop and have donwloaded the latest version of itunes onto it.I haven't done anything else with it.What would be the best way to copy the library from my main computer to the laptop - would you advise external hard drive, or using the ipod? Also, on the laptop, if I was just to connect my ipod to this, would it automatically take the music from the ipod and dump into the new itunes on the laptop.
I work away from home alot, and basically want a duplicate library on both machines.Any advice??
I have windows XP on the main home computer and the new laptop has vista on it.Would this affect anything?
Any help on these matters is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you all.

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account or
b) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • Help Please - New iPod Classic will not sync with existing iTunes library

Please help, I have researched every forum I can find and all the suggested tips have not worked for me.  Here is my problem.....
I have a new laptop and a new iPod classic.  I have checked and both have the most up to date software.  I have logged into iTunes and all the music and films I had purchased previously is showing.
I thought I simply had to log into iTunes, authorise the laptop, plug in my Ipod and then sync the music and films from iTunes onto my iPod.
When I do the there is a message within seconds to say the iPod sync is completed but the iPod remains empty.  I can't figure out where I have gone wrong.
    All suggestions gratefully received

Problem solved.  It seems that iTunes archived my music to iCloud so once I downloaded all the files again they sync'd rght away

  • Don't laugh, but please help this new ipod user

ok. I am very computer illiterate and a new ipod user. It seems I cannot figure out how to "send" my 5th generation/video ipod MUSIC LIBRARY to the I-tunes library on my second computer ( i tried to make a playlist but it won't allow). I have downloaded all software from the ipod into both computers, but I cannot seem to get my ipod library onto my ibookG4 itunes library. Make sense? When you all are done laughing at this newbie, it would be great if someone could explain how I do this? It seems there should be a way to save my ipod onto this laptop? thank you very much

Well don't laugh too hard because I Had the same problem but with a Windows
technically its illegal to do that but there is a legitimate way to get around it
What you have to do is enable disk mode on your fifth generation iPod
and it acts as a huge storage device
Then Just copy all the music files into the disk mode
and take them off on your laptop
Just Make sure you don't sync or restore your iPod

  • Need help syncing new ipod touch to Itunes.

I recently bought a brand new Ipod touch 5th gen. I have the latest update for itunes, I want to start syncing music to my Ipod. My computer will not bring any info for this ipod touch into itunes. I had a 4th gen and I know that I seen on the right hand corner, under the search store, there should be a little icon with your Ipod below. No where is my Ipod been found. Every time I plug the USB cord into the computer, I don't see anything come on the screen. All I see is the battery charging on my Ipod. I'm getting frustrated with this Ipod not allowing me to get any music. What am I doing wrong? I also don't see any summary pane for me to reset to factory settings and start all over. how can someone help me on this? I tried turning on and off both the Ipod and computer, nothing, still the same and no Ipod is to be found on itunes.  PLEASE HELP!!

Just what version of iTunes do you have? For a 5G iPod/iOS 7 you need iTunes 11.1 or later.. If you have a Mac yo need OSX 10.6.8 or later.
Does the iTunes still see the 4G iPod?

  • HELP! New iPod Classic 80GB Recognized By Computer, Not iTunes

I have a brand new ipod classic, and it refuses to be recognized by itunes so i can install it. The "install new hardware" wizard pops up instead and it thinks it is a USB Mass Storage Device. I've tried everything on the apple support page.
PS I am aware that this sort of question probably has been answered before. I am new to this board haven't found the information i need. thanks for the help!

    Hi,
I'd been really frustrated with ITunes not recognizing my IPod after failed attempts at using the "5Rs" to resove the issue. I just wanted you guys to know that I found a resolution posted under http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1372 and after following the instructions, I "forced" ITunes to recognize the Pod and it is right now, as we speak, syncing my entire library back to the IPod! THANK YOU to whomever posted this solution! I was so lost without my IPod and was about to go on a trip without it! Whew! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ITunes help with new iPod to replace old iPod

I have a new iPod 80GB Classic the I purchased to replace the stolen iPod I had before. Is there anything I have to do to connect it to my current iTunes so I can get all my songs from my current iTunes Library?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Nope, dock it to iTunes, register it, & follow the subsequent instructions.

  • Help w/new Ipod

So I've tried syncing my new iPod to my iTunes and restored it so that it has everything that I had on my old iPod. The only problem is that it will only download the music that I've purchased from iTunes on it, nothing else like CDs. Any ideas as to why it's doing this?

I don’t’ know if this is the best method’s or not but it’s an option.
One-way is to backup your files to a playlist. CD or DVD.
Then transfer the files from the CD/DVD to your sister’s computer.
Try using Smart Playlist first, this will also help you to learn how to do backup’s,
In addition, to transferring music and data files.
You can also use Apple BACKUP method, and then transfer to computer of choice.

  • Help getting new Ipod to work on OS 10.3.9

Just bought a new Ipod Nano with 7+ Gb. My computer only has OS X 10.3.9 and Itunes needs version 8.0 which will not work on my computer. I can't upgrade my computer. Is there some kind of plug in or something I can get to help me out?

I just saw a thread where a person had the exact same problem. Apparently, there is no way to upgrade your system without paying because your software is outdated by 3 years. There aren't any plug-ins either, at least not yet. You should go to the Apple Store and ask them though, because they will have info on if a plug-in will be released or not.

  • Need help please with ipod mini

Hi,I had my ipod mini sent into service as the pasue button was bust and I now have a totally new ipod mini send out and Im trying to install it on the pC and it doesnt let me,need help pls

You may need to format the iPod for use with Windows.
Try this instead of using the supplied installation CD.
Download the iPod Updater, install this to your computer, restart the computer, run the Updater, then connect your iPod when prompted (not before), then follow the set up procedure.
If this is what you are having problems with, then post back with what happens and any error messages you see.

  • Need help with new iPod (kind of kong)

I have a 2nd generation iPod mini with 4GB of music in an outdated iTunes version 5 I think.
I just bought an 80GB iPod classic, and want to know how to go about installing it and putting the music on.
    1. Should I uninstall iTunes and then download the newest one, then put all of my music into iTunes that I want on the new iPod?
    2. Or just update old iTunes and plug in the 80GB one.
I am not really tech savvy so any help is appreciated! =)

Just update iTunes to the latest version, connect your new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions to register and name it. It will connect to iTunes and prompt you to automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like. You can leave it at manual update or choose to sync music - selected playlists.

  • Need Help Getting New iPod Classic to work on system with existing iPods

I have an iPod shuffle (for workouts) and an iPod photo 60GB which I have had for some time. I have iTunes 8.
Got a new iPod Classic 120 GB for Father's Day - I cannot get it to work with iTunes yet. Plugged it in and nothing happened. iTunes just acted normal, no setup assistant, nothing. Going to reboot and see if it does the same thing, but in the meantime I am hoping someone here can advise.
    Thanks in advance,
    jf

Turns out, of all things, it was the cable - seems the 'old' cable does not work with new iPods, but the newer cable that comes with Classics works with everything - cable was updated somehow, per Apple.
    Thanks,

  • Help Please: My Ipod Will Not Upload My Itunes Library

When I place my Ipod in the cradle (w/ Itunes open) - the computer recognizes the Ipod ("Updating", "Do Not Disconnect", then "Ipod Updates: Ok To Disconnect" comes up) but my library will not import. I restored the settings (and updated software). One thing - I did move my Itunes to an external drive ("F")a while back. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks,

    Brian, Monty, & Janet:
If you moved the iTunes music files to another location without using iTunes to manage the move, you will cause iTunes to lose track of the music and possibly the entire Library.
Personally, I find it best to keep the iTunes
    i program files
installed on the C: drive. While not completely necessary, it does make sense to manage all program files under the Windows default directory, if for no other reason than ease of locating the program.
    Where the actual music
    i files
are kept is not critical, as long as iTunes is aware of their location.
    Let iTunes keep its
    i music database
file (the 'iTunes Library.itl' meta-data file) wherever it wants and
    b do not move it,
as this will completely confuse iTunes resulting in a loss of your music
    i information
See these posts for some additional information and possible solutions. Read all the links provided within those posts as well. Post back if you have more questions before you attempt to fix this situation, unless you are completely sure of what you are doing and why. Chances are, we can get your Library back to normal and then move it to where you want it to be.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You need to download and install the latest version of iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Ambie12, You should probably start a new thread for your issue if downloading iTunes 7.5 doesn't help.

  • Need Help Please with Ipod 20G

Long story short....I had my Ipod 4G and computer stolen several month ago on a business trip(have police report). A friend of mine recently purchased a new Video Ipod and gave me his old 20G...pretty nice of him! I am about to have iTunes loaded on to my new computer. Here are my questions I need help with please.
    1. Will I need to setup a new iTunes account or can I use my old one?
    2. Will I have to reset my newly acquired Ipod before I can place my music on it? I did back up about 80% of the songs from my old Ipod. Or will I be able to keep the 1500 songs my friend placed on it?
    3. Or would it be easier for me to give him back his, cough up the $300 dollars for a new one and start all over?
Can't think of anything else I might need to know. If there is something I am missing and you could help fill in the blanks for me I would truly appreciate the help.
    Thanks so much!!
    20G   Windows 2000
    20G   Windows 2000

    1. No. You can use your old one.
    2. Will I have to reset my newly acquired Ipod before I can place my music on it? No, but iTunes may automatically do this, I will explain.
I did back up about 80% of the songs from my old Ipod. Or will I be able to keep the 1500 songs my friend placed on it?
Sorry, but it would not be legal to keep the 1500 songs on this iPod that were your friend's songs, assuming that he's still using/listening to them on another computer.
    3. No, I think it would be worth it to keep going, and use the 20GB iPod on your computer. It's not many hoops to jump through, and you should be up and syncing in no time.
Overall, it's fairly easy, and I would suggest that you keep going with this iPod.
    My note from question #2:
If you connect an iPod that hasn't been attatched to your computer before, iTunes will most likely display [to the effect of] this message when you connect the iPod for the first time:
"The songs on the iPod "~~" are linked to another iTunes library. Would you like to replace the content of the iPod with this current iTunes library?"
Be sure to click on "NO" when you recieve this message.
Then, click on your iPod's name in the left panel of iTunes.
    Click on the "Music" tab.
Deselect "Sync Music" if it is already set to this option.
This means that your iPod is on manual managing now, instead of iTunes automatically transferring songs to your iPod, or deleting them, which is not what you want at this time.
Now, if you have any songs on the iPod that you need to keep (i.e., if you have some of your songs on this iPod)you have a few options to transfer your iPod songs to your computer.
Method 1 - Manually transfer your iPod songs to iTunes using MacMuse's post. See it here -> iPod songs to computer (MacMuse post)
Method 2 - Add your iPod's folder into the iTunes library (via iTunes). Read this post here -> Using iTunes settings to transfer iPod songs to iTunes
Method 3 - Use a third-party program to get the transferring done. For a Windows computer, CopyPod should work good. Also, you can try out YamiPod
I hope that info helps you.
