Help, please: problem using brush in masking

For some reason, when I use the brush tool, 100% opacity. 100% flow, when I paint with black it only partially reveals the background image. I have no special brush settings applied in the brush palette and the layer blend mode is set to normal. Any suggestions would be appreciated--have never run into this before.

Thanks so much, Ricky, for taking the time to help. Your suggestions made me think--I had numerous layers between the one with the mask and the background. Even though there were only a few paint strokes on each layer and the rest was blank, I tried merging them and that worked--I could then use my brush (the ordinary soft round brush) to display the background completely where I wanted it. Must have had differend blend modes in there somewhere and forgotten about it.

Help please problem with export

I had some problems with safari on my imac (OS X) so I did some "repairs" I ended up deleting some keychains and I believe that is what cause the problem I'm having. However I don't know how to fix it.
When I try to export RAW images from my Lacie rugged external hard drive to the desktop into jpg I get this error...
"An internal error has occurred: ?:0: attempt to index field 'rootFile' (a nil value)"
I have a deadline very soon (in about an hour) and need help please.

When you've got the job out of the way reboot the Mac and try the export to desktop again. If it is still broken then in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions on the Mac and La Cie.

A Problem Using Brushes

I've been using AP3 since the beginning but had never tried to use all of the brushes until yesterday. All of the Quick Brushes have worked without problem but now trying to use brushes with highlights/shadows, enhance, curves blocks Ap3 freezes and I must force quit. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

'Previews' are temporary copies of the image. They aren't the real image and wont be used for anything other than accelerating how fast you can flip through images to find one you want. In the same way that Aperture and iPhoto generate 'thumbnail' views that wont be used for anything other than speeding how fast you can browse images... 'previews' are basically just screen-sized thumbnails.
iPhoto is a 'JPEG' processing engine. It can technically read a RAW image, but it wont work with it. It'll just convert it to JPEG and do everything from there. Aperture is really a RAW processing engine. It can technically read a JPEG -- but to do so sort of defeats the whole point of the power of Aperture.
People notice that they can 'browse' images in iPhoto much faster than Aperture. As well they should... it's faster. That's because when you adjust an image in iPhoto, it makes a copy of the image (a new JPEG) and makes the change to the copy. The copy is now stored with your changes as a permanent part of the copy. Once you save and move on to the next image, you can't undo an adjustment in iPhoto. The only safety net in iPhoto is that it does save the original image and you can 'revert' back to it. But if you do that you lose ALL the adjustments you made... you can't undo just one thing as you can do in Aperture. BUT... as a result of working this way, the image on the disk is the finished image. All iPhoto has to do is display it. This makes it fast to browse.
Aperture, on the other hand, is mostly used by pro or high-end non-pros. I would guess most have DSLR cameras and most of them use RAW. The size comparison of RAW vs. JPEG is huge... a RAW might be 15-20MB whereas the same image as a JPEG might be 100k. Also, Aperture doesn't actually 'apply' the changes directly to the master. It just tracks the list of everything you wanted to do to adjust the image. When you open an image, it opens the master (which is huge) and THEN it looks at the list of all the adjustments you've applied and begins to reprocess them (which can take a while) -- this combined with the fact that the average image size in Aperture is substantially larger than the average image size in iPhoto and it's no surprise that iPhoto is a lot faster. In summary, iPhoto opens a very small file and has no work to do other than display it. Aperture has to open a very large file and has a LOT of work to do in order to display it.
So to combat this problem, Aperture uses 'previews'. Basically it's cheating. It's doing what iPhoto does in that it saves a copy of your image (with all adjustments applied) as a JPEG. This means in "Preview" mode it can be every bit as fast as iPhoto. Unfortunately you lose a lot of detail & control when you convert to JPEG - you wouldn't actually want to use this for real work. So the JPEG is really just there to speed browsing performance. As soon as you want to change something, you must leave "Preview" mode and Aperture will work on the RAW version of the image.

Problem using Brush tool with layer mask in Photoshop CC.

Using Photoshop CC, working on a layer mask. Using the Brush tool to paint white to show the effect works like normal. Painting black has no effect. Just started doing this in the last two days.

Check you Brush blending mode setting in the tools option bar.

Problem Using Brush Colors

I am just working with Photoshop Elements 10 and I seemed to have hit a "brick wall". For one reason or another whenever I use a brush with any color to it, whether it is in "Normal" or "Color" mode, or whether I am on a solid white background, a layer of the very same white background, or a clipping mask with any color background, the color of my brush stoke is hit or miss. One time out of ten it is the color I set in the foreground, nine other times it is a related hue on the color wheel. And if I get the desired color I want on the 1st stroke, without changing anything my very next stroke will be a different color . . . BUT always the next related color in the color wheel. The third brush stroke will be the thrid related color in the color wheel, the fourth will go back to the preslected color. Brush stokes 5 and 6 will cycle through the color wheel. The 7th stroke will be the preselected color again. White, black, or light gray brushes are no problem. BUT when I start using colored brushes I have no control over the colors.
The only hint I can give you is just before I noticed this I was poking around in the Photoshop Color Kuler - https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel
Up until that point everything was working fine. I am wondering if there was something changed in Elements on me when I was poking around with different color schemes? Would a "Reset Brushes" in the Brush Menu help or really throw me for a loop?

Help please, problem when updating my N8

i updated my nokia N8 to the softwar version 025.007.
since im having trouble with my phone:
- everytime i shift from one widget to the other it takes many time to load
- im having trouble installing applications from ovi store: i download the application, than it tells me that it requires more Mb. after that, an error message appears on the screen telling me to redownload it from smart installer.but it doesn't work.
im not also able to download any update anymore. i attached a picture for the error message.
please help me to solve my problem.

How much space have you available on "C"?
Sounds like your low on either C or Ram.
Do the 8 second reset, power off then hold button for 8 seconds until you feel three vibrations.
Restart and kill any applications that have started, you should have between 50 and 100mb fee on "C" and around 100mb of Ram free after restarting.
If your using Anti Virus software Its remove it was Symbian doesn't need it and they just hog resources.

Help! Problem using Mini-DVI adapter

I'm a teacher, and I need some help.
I've been using a Mitsubishi XD 250 data projector at school. The setup I have is exactly the same as it was last year, but something strange is happening.
The data projector uses VGA, so I have the VGA-to-Mini-DVI adapter from Apple.
I turned on the projector this morning, as I have a presentation for one of my classes today, but it's not working! The projector comes on, and the iMac shows that it recognizes the external display, but the projector says "No Signal." I have no idea what the problem is, as I've tried restarting both the iMac and the projector as well as connecting and disconnecting the cables.
Any suggestions? I suppose it's possible that something happened to the VGA cable over the summer, but is that likely considering that the iMac recognizes the external display?
I really need to give this presentation today, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is probably simply the wrong signal source being set on your projector. This is normally a remote control switch or your projector. I don't know this model but they all have multiple input choices. Change the input until you see your Mac.

Help! Problems using FCE 2.0.3 after upgrading to OS 10.4.9

I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.9 and now I am getting "dropped frames on capture" error messages. None of the variables have changed (Same computer, camera, tape, external HD, cables) It was working great two days prior to upgrading to 10.4.9 and now I can't capture anything without getting dropped frames. I've tried a different tape, switching the capture disk to my internal HD, switching cables, reinstalling OS 10.4.9 again (this time from direct combo download), rebuilding permissions, trashing FCE preferences. I'm officially STUCK! Any help would be appreciated. Is anyone experiencing the same problems after upgrading to 10.4.9?

Just so we have all the "me too"s in the one thread, I posted about this on Saturday. I said:
I've been using FCE HD (3.0.1) for ages with my current setup and I've never had any capture problems.
This weekend, I tried capturing some anamorphic MiniDV footage for the first time for a few weeks and I repeatedly got the "dropped frames" error. I tried:
1. another cable
2. some different anamorphic footage from another tape
3. trashing the prefs
4. re-installing FCE HD
5. de-fragging the HDD
6. another machine (iBook G4)
I still got the error, even on the other machine.
I tried iMovie and the same camcorder and I had no problems at all so I can workaround by capturing there and importing the project into FCE (and rendering the audio), but a kludge isn't a fix
The only things to have changed since the last time I successfully captured any footage were the software updates OS X 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.5 so I strongly suspect one of those.

HELP! Problem using HPSCAN.exe or TWAIN driver for HP Laserjet Pro cm1415fnw using Windows 7

I have been using the HP Laserjet Pro cm1415fnw for over a year without a problem. At the time when I first purchased the unit, I was using a Dell desktop with Windows XP and connected the printer via USB port. I was able to print and scan from my computer, including from within applications that use TWAIN scanning driver such as Word, Acrobat, etc.
I have since upgraded to an HP slimline s5-1160 computer using Windows 7. I installed the Laserjet software from my installation CD's without a problem. The printer is connected to the computer by USB port. I can continue to print without a problem. However, I no longer am able to scan using the HP software (HPscan.exe) nor from within applications that use TWAIN scanning driver such as Word, Acrobat, etc. When I attempt to do so, it takes a long time before it asks me what TWAIN scan driver to select. When I select the HP cm1410 MFP series, the program either crashes or reverts to the state it was before I attempted to scan an image into a document from within the program.
I can however scan successfully using the Windows Scan and Fax wizard or if I choose "Devices and Printers" from the Start Menu and select "Start scan" from the menu after right-clicking the HP printer icon. However this option limits my use of the scanner -- I cannot scan to a PDF nor can I scan multiple pages into an OCR application. I'm forced to scan to either a JPG or TIF or PNG.
As for attempting to resolve this problem I have done the following with no success:
Uninstall and reinstall the full software and drivers (and using the most recent version on the HP website)
Change USB ports and/or cables
Run the HP scan diagnostic utility, which seems to show an error at the WIA scanning step and then recommends that I uuninstall and reinstall the full software. When I skip that and allow it to check for TWAIN scanning, it gives me a similar error, suggesting that I use the most recent version of the drivers (the driver that I am using is v 3.0 dated 11/12/2009) Therefore in this case the HP scan diagnostic utility does NOT provide a fix for this problem other than uninstall and reinstall, which I have done several times to no avail
Contact HP support both for the computer and the multifunction printer (which as I understand are different support staff). The printer staff claims it's a software problem and that the computer staff should be able to resolve it (something about not having "launchpad" installed properly. When I contact the computer staff, they claim it's a printer driver issue. So I am at a standstill
I researched the HP support forums only to find from this link - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02661093&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4089468&tmp... - that if you cannot scan from HP software that you can use the programs that rely on WIA drivers (Windows Fax and Scan) which I already know I can do but implies that HP does NOT have a solution for how to scan using their own software!
My gut tells me that this is one of those problems that many others may have but for which there is no workable solution. It's possible that during the course of uninstalling and reinstalling the software, remnants may remain behind that prevent proper functioning of the drivers, but without knowing how to specifically "clean" those remnants before reinstalling the software, I am at a loss. Oh and by the way, I've also tried using CCleaner and Norton Registry Cleaner in an attempt to clean those remnants, but that effort didn't help.
My question is basically this... does anyone know of a fix around this problem or must I resign myself to using the Windows Fax and Scan wizard to scan in documents and images and forget about using TWAIN programs as HP seems to be suggesting? I would think that given that I am using an HP printer/scanner along with an HP computer with Windows 7 that this problem should NOT be a problem!

Before attempting to install the printer on my computer (HP slimline s5-1160), I had been able to successfully install the printer previously on two other computers: a Lenovo T-410 laptop (work computer using Windows XP) and an HP Pavilion Elite HPE (wife's computer using Windows 7).
On those computers, I can use the TWAIN driver from within applications without a problem, and the HPSCAN.exe file works as well. Both computers connect to the printer wirelessly.
It is while trying to install the printer on my home computer via USB that I am having all sorts of difficulty. I have also tried to connect my s5-1160 to the printer wirelessly from my computer. I also checked the Windows Services, and all seems fine there. I also tried switching USB ports and cables. Again, no luck with the scanning using TWAIN driver.
One other point: when I use the original installation CD that came with the printer to install on the s5-1160, the installation seems to stop when it says "Checking requirements for installation" That didn't happen with the two other computers. However, that problem doesn't happen the s5-1160 when I used the more recent version of the full software from the HP website.
Let me reiterate. I have never had any problems with printing from any computer. The scanner works fine from my s5-1160 if I resort to using the scanner and fax wizard using the WIA drivers. What I am unable to do is to get the scanner to work from within an application using the TWAIN driver or if I use the native HP application (hpscan.exe). Nothing seems to happen. Because of that I cannot scan directly into a PDF.
And the only fix that the HP scan diagnostic utility continues to recommend is that I uninstall and reinstall the software. It shows errors in the WIA scanning step and TWAIN step.
Is it possible that because of behind-the-scenes Windows updates that my s5-1160 is receiving that a software conflict is created that prevents the TWAIN driver from functioning properly? Other than that I am at a loss to figure out why this is happening.

Help please! [using Runtime.exec() to run find command in UNIX]

Hi guys! im trying to use exec() to run the UNIX find command
that my application uses. As you can see from my sample code, the find command finds all files ending with html in my home directory. Unfortunately when I run the program it doesn't give me an output, but when I run it on the shell in the same directory as this code is saved, it works perfectly fine.

I don't see anythi obvious. In both catch blocks, call printSckTrace on the exception yhou caught.
I think the real culprit is the ~ though.
~ is interpreted by some (most?) shells to men home dir. However, when you just exec a command, you don't have a shell to do that interpretation for you, so it's looking for a directory that's literally named ~.
Either exec a shell (read the man pages for the shell of your choice, but for zsh I think it's "/bin/zsh -c find ~ blah blah blah) or else just put the actual path to your home directory into the string you pass to exec. You can get that from System.getProperty("user.home").

Help please! Using an array in another class

Hello, I'm new to JAVA and I'm trying to pass an array from one class to another, but I can't get it right. I've been able to get individual values on at a time.
If any one can help me out and give me a quick sample of how to do it,
I've done this below.
Is it as simple as an individual value - but just calling it an array - instead of say a string - or is it more complex. Please Help

No you are missing my point. You original code was calling the getLength method twice. On the first line it did nothing with the returned value and on the second you assigned the returned value to vol. But the setLength method is where you actually create the array and assign values to it. So unless you call that method first then you will not have an array at all.

Yes you could do that but all that will tell you is the length of the array and not what values are in it.
