Help Please! Setting up SNMP on a ESW 540 48 port switch

Hi There!  This is my first post and I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to SNMP.  We are trying to evaluate our network performance, so we have downloaded a copy of Solarwind’s Orion and installed it on a server.  The topology is as follows.
A SBS 2003 R2 Server running normal programs.  A second Server 2003 R2( IP 1.2.3.4) running a proprietary program for the business and, hopefully, Orion soon.  The two servers and about 20 XP professional workstations are connected to the esw 540 48 port.  An uplink is attached to a consumer grade Linksys that has 5 workstations attached.  I was told to install SNMP on the workstations behind the Linksys, so I did with the community name = public, Rights = Read Only, and Accept packets from these hosts = localhost and server 1.2.3.4
I am wondering what configuration I need to do (it is confusing to me) through the cisco web application to set up the switch so that it will communicate with server 1.2.3.4 and the Orion program.  We may switch programs in the future (we are not tied to Orion), but it is what we have to set up the switch with.  I am mainly looking for network throughput information and usage.
There are just so many options.  Any help would be appreciated….   eric

  • ESW 540 24 port switch ports issue

    hello,
very randomly the ports on the switch stop working and the only way to get them to work again is by resetting the port. we have cisco ip phones connected to the ports and computers connected to the back of the phone.
what i've notices when the phones or computers stop working is that if i unplug the cable from the switch
the LED on the bottom right corner of the port will remain Lid. if i check the config the port shows "suspended"
could you please let me know a better way to resolve this problem, i don't want to reset my switches every day once or twice a day because this is happening so often
    thanks

That is normal behavior as those ports share switch fabric resources with the GBICs.  When installed the GBIC will have priority and the associated ports (12 & 24) will not be operational.  You seem to have them configured correctly.
    Best Regards,

    Hello
I need to configure a port for a server on the Voice Vlan, however when I do so i get an error and the status is unknonwn and the port isn't working properly
how do i appropiately configure a port on this switch to be on the voice vlan
    thanks

    Hi Albert,
Bit concerned about your testing process.  You have proved that untagged switch ports in vlan 1 can communicate with e24.  that makes perfect sense.
What what are you using (connected on e24 )  to check for tagged packets egressing out of E24 from PCs connected on  vlan 2 and vlan 3.  This testing device you are using must be vlan aware.
    The switch port 24 must be connected to a VLAN aware router or layer 3 switch  that is trunked for ;
    vlan1 untagged
    vlan2 and vlan3 tagged.
So that routing can occur between vlans.

  • ESW 540 8-port

    Hello forum
I bought an ESW 540 8-port switch, mainly for the POE capability over all 8 ports, so that we can power some SPA50X phones.
The concepts of a "managed" switch are challenging for a newbie.
Is there a way to make this device behave like a boring "unmanaged" switch ??
We have plenty of bandwidth, and don't need to be troubled by QoS and virtual LAN's, or all the security stuff at this time.
Making this device work like an unmanaged switch (aka plug-and-pray) would greatly simplify my life.
TIA's for any tips or clues.

    Good morning
Hi brian, thanks for using our forum, my name is Johnnatan and I am part of the Small business Support community. As far I know you can´t turn it as “unmanaged” device, however you can use it without any special configuration, these models are such as "plug-and-play" and by default you can connect computers, then setting ip´s to them and have connectivity, however if someday you are curious about how to use it, we can help you with that, by the way here you can see the guide for your device. I apologize for the inconvenience, however I hope you find this answer useful,

  • ESW 540 Combo Ports

    Hello,
I am interesting what Combo ports mean in ESW 540 which has 4 SFP? Can I use 4 optic SFP at the same time(or 1000BaseT SFP) ??

    Hi Kristijan,
Just out of interest, are you using firmware version 2.1.19 on the switch, your switch may be using an older version of the firmware ?
But there should be no reason why the switch interfaces 11,12,23,24 could not be placed in access mode, seems a bit weird.
I believe, if you check the VLAN interfaces, vlan1 should still be untagged on those "trunked" ports.
So, please check the firmware version, but the ESW is covered by a great Warranty, so if you are still having issues, call the Small Business Support Center (SBSC) and allow them to share your screen via webex and resolve your configuration issue one way or the other.

  • Help please: setting up Moto sbg6850 to wrt160nv2

I have a motorola cable modem+wireless in the home office.  (unfortunately the wifi doesn't reach the family room).
(I connect wireless laptops and a networked printer into the moto)
I have a linksys wrt160n in the family room.   (I connect laptops wirelessly and a DVD player and PC into the Linksys)
I have connected the Moto to the Linksys via LAN cable.
It has been working 'ok' (but because of problems with the netflix in the bluray, i tried to get into the linksys, but couldn't... so I started resetting it... now I can't get it to work at all).
Is there an FAQ or a document somewhere that shows how to set this all up correctly?
    (I'm assuming that :-
    - I connect the lan cable into the 'internet' port on the linksys
    - I disable DHCP on the linksys
    - I have two different SSIDs on the boxes (e.g. wifioffice and wififamily )... that's fine by me.
    please help!

  • Help please:set up mac 10.4.11 with ext dsl modem to send and receive faxes

Hi and thanks in advance. I have a G4MDD dual processor, and have a dsl modem for internet connection. I want to set up to send and receive faxes. I can make and receive phone calls while connected to the internet. any ideas or help appreciated. Thanks again.
    Message was edited by: R.Andom

I cannot send/receive faxes via my dsl, I have to use my regular phone line. (My DSL modem only has one phone jack port, and that is to connect it to the outside world. Pretty sure this is true of every DSL modem.)
When I need fax capability, I unplug the phone line to my telephone at the phone end, and plug that cable into the modem port in the back of the G4. (The modem is built-in.) After sending / receiving, I switch the cable back to the phone.
You set up fax capability in System Preferences / Print and Fax.

This sounds like you are going through the standard Windows setup for a new system.
Does your friend have any internet connection at all?  Ethernet perhaps?

  • Help Please - Setting New Defaults

I am using LightRoom CC on a PC
I want to reset the default so when ever I open a new lrcat file the clarity is automatically changed for all photos.
I know it is simple, I just haven't done it for a while and now can't figure it out.
    Thanks for any help.

In the Develop module, set the clarity to the desired level, along with any other custom settings that you want. Then go to that Develop menu and Set Default Settings. All of the settings will become default settings whenever you import or reset a photo.

  • NEED HELP PLEASE Setting up 2 VLANS and a redundant WAN connection

I have a remote branch office which is actually a huge bar/lounge. The bar wants to enable patrons to access the Internet with their wireless laptops. I want to prevent those patrons from accessing our private network, and also prevent them from traversing our static VPN tunnel back to HQ.
The bar processes all credit cards via the T1 connection, and this has caused us to lose money every time the T1 goes down while we're open, since there is no WAN redundancy right now.
Here is my current hardware configuration:
    1) one PIX 501 50-user 3des.
    2.) two Dell 3024
    3.) one Aironet 1100(g) AP.
    Current LAN Network: 10.35.35.0
(internal employees only, static VPN tunneled to remote HQ network)
    Current Wireless SSID's:
    SSID1=PRIVATESSID
SSID2=PUBLICSSID (not currently in use, waiting to figure this out)
    Current WAN: one T1 connection.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO AND NEED HELP FIGURING OUT:
#1a) I want to create two separate VLAN's that are able to share the WAN connection, but not be able to "see" each other.
#1b) These VLAN's would be mapped to their respective SSID's on the AP (PRIVATESSID>10.35.35.0 and PUBLICSSID>192.168.1.0).
#1c) The 192.168.1.0 network should not be able to traverse the static tunnel between the branch site and HQ.
#2) I would like to install a backup WAN connection such as a modem 56k dial-up to an ISP or a cable modem to an ISP. In case the primary T1 goes down, I would like the router to automatically dial out over the modem conection and route all Internet bound traffic over that backup WAN connection, until the primary comes back online.
    Question 1:
I'm assuming I need a router to do the intervlan routing. Could this router also do the on-demand WAN backup dialing to an ISP via analog modem?
What IOS version and flavor (IP base, IP+, etc.) would I need? What is the cheapest router I can do all that with (i.e. 2620/2621/1720/3600 series)? What WIC's or NM's would I need?
    Question Two:
I would like to prioritize PRIVATESSID's traffic over PUBLICSSID's traffic, which I know I can do on the access point. Can I do this on the router so that any 10.35.35.0 traffic takes priority over any 192.168.1.0 traffic?
    Question Three
If the primary T1 WAN connection goes down, I don't want the router to re-route the 192.168.1.0 traffic over the backup 56k dial-up WAN connection. That traffic can wait until the T1 comes back up.
Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Assuming your access points can place SSID into separate vlans and support 802.1q trunks then I can attempt to answer your questions. There are seperate secuity issues with both SSID for protection and VLANs for seperation but in your case in may be minimal.
    q1
Any cisco router that will run 802.1q trunking will work. Since you are looking at older routers you will need IP+ to get it. Even 2610's will support 802.1q on their 10m ethernet at the correct code level but 10m and 802.1q is sorta nonstandard. Since your backup is only 56k you can use the internal modem port as a dial backup. A wic-2a/s will also work if you prefer not to use the modem port. You will need some wic to run your t1 line. If you are planning to leave the t1 on another router it makes the next 2 questions much harder.
    q2
This is fairly simple and depends on your ios level. "priority queing" is supported on even the older software. I assume you do not control the far end of the t1 line since it sounds as if this goes to a ISP.
You will need to have them do the QoS since most issues with the internet are inbound and not outbound. You can only control outbound traffic.
    q3
If the T1 is on the same router then this is fairly simple. You can just put a floating static default route in that will cause the dialer to come up if the the t1 goes down. There is no easy way to protect against the line being up but no traffic passing. This is also why it would be best to have the t1 on the same router. If its not you will need to get very creative to solve this. You could build a GRE tunnel to a remote location and montior the tunnel or run a routing protcol over the tunnel. In the newest software you could use SAA and policy routing to force the traffic over the dialer but the router must support ios 12.4.
3a. You mentioned a cable modem as a backup. That can be much easier sometimes since it is all routing and no dialer interfaces with nasty modem issues. This does not make the issue of the t1 not on the same router easier.

  • ESW 520 24-Port switch with POE not working???

We just purchased 8 managed switches POE to swap out our existing in preparation for our new phone system.  We installed them all after configuring with static IP.  Deployed... and all but two work fine.  Can someone assist with tips for troubleshooting why two of them do not work?  There are a couple other switches in the building.   Could it be that a switch "upstream" from the two non-functioning switches is causing an issue?  If so, how do I find out?  When we put back the two "dumb" switches all was fine.  Any tips to help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Rachel,
Thank you for posting. You may need to change the Smartport role of the ESW switch port to match what you are connecting to. If you are connecting to another switch, the role should be switch. This is usually what causes the ports to block traffic.

  • ESW 540 switch issue

    Hello,
I have a ESW 540 48 port gigiabit switch.  We have had it a year and a half.  In the past year it has experienced this cycle of problems:
After a reset, within a week the fans are on full blast. Within less than a month the webgui is gone - not accessable. the switch will still switch, but to do anything to it means it has to be reset completely.
I cannot figure out how to call Cisco support for this, it has a 5 yr warranty which we are well within. I am ok with the hardware replacement but cannot figure out how to arraign that.  the Support for cisco is not they type of support structure i am used to, in some cases it talks about contracts but then I cannot find prices or even how it works.
any advice? am i just looking in the wrong places for support or does cisco operate on a diffent model than other tech companies (like Apple or HP) i just am wondering if i should adjust my expectations to less?
yes i am a bit frustrated, i went out on a limb with going to Cisco for the 'best' and our other switch a 520 is also having problems
our old netgear switches worked great for about 5 years until i felt we need to improve them.
please help a clueless IT guy out

  • VLAN ESW-540

    Hi,
    I have a new switch ESW-540 24-port, I upgrade firmware to 2.1.19.
    I build 2 VLAN for 2 networks: VLAN 2 and VLAN 3 . I don't use the default VLAN 1.
    This is my configuration:
port e1 and e2 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED VLAN 2
port e3 and e4 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED VLAN 3
    port e1,e2,e3,e4: EXCLUDED VLAN 1
port e24: TRUNK PORT with UNTAGGED VLAN 1 and TAGGED VLAN 2 and VLAN 3
Communication (ping) between e1 and e2 --> OK
Communication (ping) between e3 and e4 --> OK
    Communication (ping) between e1,e2 and e24 --> NOK  :-(
    Communication (ping) between e3,e4 and e24 --> NOK  :-(
    Communication (ping) between e5,e6,e7,.... (VLAN1) and e24 --> OK
    Communication (ping) between e5,e6,e7,.... (VLAN1) and VLAN2, VLAN3 --> NOK - It's correct.
Any special configuration on e24 trunk port ????
    Can you help me ???

  • ESW 520 8-port PoE switch cannot ping

    Hello
I have an ESW 520 8-Port switch with a management ip address of 192.168.10.2 /24
After I reboot it, I can successfully ping it from a pc with an ip of 192.168.10.123 for about 50 consecutive times.
After that, I get a "Destination host unreachable" (this icmp message is sent by my pinging pc (192.168.10.123).
This obviously seems like a bug.
    Has anybody seen this before.
Whenever I reboot it, it goes through the same sequence.
    Thanksj

    Hi David,
I figured out what the problem was.
The switch was obtaining an ip via dhcp, as it is a DCHP client by default.
I am used to working with Enterprise level Cisco equipment, so this simple oversight was the cause of the problem.
The ip that was obtained via dhcp was obviously different than the default ip of 192.168.10.2
So when the switch was rebooted, it would start off with its default ip of 192.168.10.2.
As soon as it obtained an ip via dhcp, I could not ping it of course
    Thanks for the  input though
