Thanks. Then, their Oct '13 article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924 is out of date.

  • HELP PLEASE-- flashing question mark on startup, none of remedies working

I'm using my Powerbook one night, everything is working fine. I wake up, go to use it and I get the spinning color wheel; tried to close an application by force quit and I get no response, so I restart using the power button, and the flashing question mark / mac OS icon pops up.
I immediately did some research on what to do; I put the OS cd in, tried restarting holding the C key and later the X key; nothing. Tried resetting PRAM, didn’t solve the problem. Tried holding command-S to check disk/repair, didn’t work. I then held the option key to choose the location to boot off: and neither the HD nor cd showed up: just the circular arrow to re-scan, and the straight arrow to enter the selection.
I have 2 install discs: I'm not sure if they are the same or not; I may have put the wrong one in. So I tried to eject it and now it wont eject.
Firstly, how to eject the cd? I tried holding the eject button, F12, command + . , as well as the trackpad. I don’t see a place to put a pin or paperclip in like some cd drives have to force it open.
Secondly, what else can I try to get my computer working? I'm no expert, but it sounds like this might be a hardware problem aside from the HD, being that the computer is not recognizing neither HD nor cd. However, the cd I have is a copy of the OS disc I made, and it may or may not be the right install disc, or properly made copy.
How difficult is it to open up Powerbooks and replace the HD? I'd like to have it up and running as soon as possible, but most importantly I hope that my data is still safe. And no, unfortunately I hadn't backed up my data. Please advise.

Maybe the copy of that disk is not bootable. Do you have the original or can you get it?

  • Help please Stupid Question on startup password

Hi there. I am new here, bought a used Emac and have been using it for several months now. It came with an administrator account and I had the password and everything was fine. Today my husband was "cleaning out files" and restarted the computer. Upon startup, a screen comes up with my name on it asking for a password. Now he swears he never set up an account for me and I know I never did. He must have done something in the settings that he doesn't remember. The password that was used for the administrator account doesn't work there. I have no clue what the password would be. There is no other user option that comes up. The original administrator is gone. I can't get into my computer! This is very very bad as I use it for business. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened or how I can fix it? Unfortunately when I purchased the computer, I didn't get any software with it so I can't go that route to fix it. Please help!

    Welcome To Discussions sweetmissjulie!
Even if you are successful in resetting the password, you really must obtain a set of system install disks.
You could call Apple customer service, and ask if you could purchase a copy of the original discs that shipped with the eMac, or you could opt to purchase a Full Retail Version of OS X. This would also enable you to upgrade the eMac to the current version Tiger.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Once Panther 10.3.x is re-installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is March 19, 2007, but the program was extended to reflect Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
I suggest that if you choose that route, call Apple to ensure that is is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

  • Help Please homework question lost :S

I am very lost on how to do this. ive attempted it for a long time period and i stil cant get it. This is what i have to do.
This does not require an array! An elastic rope starts out with length 100 meters. The start of the rope is fixed to a pole and a worm is placed on the rope at the start and the worm starts crawling towards the end. Each day the worm crawls 6 meters along the rope. Each day the rope is stretched by 100 meters. After how many days does the worm reach the end of the rope?
    Sample Output
Day = 0 Million. Distance from end = 0 Million meters.
Day = 1 Million. Distance from end = 19 Million meters.
Day = 2 Million. Distance from end = 30 Million meters.
Day = 3 Million. Distance from end = 39 Million meters.
Day = 4 Million. Distance from end = 45 Million meters.
Day = 5 Million. Distance from end = 49 Million meters.
    SO far i have
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class WormProblem
         public static int DISTANCEPERDAY = 6;
        public static void main(String[] args)
       Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);

  • Urgent help please, export question

I only recently started using Speedgrade and need to export my sequence back to Premiere but it's only giving me a bunch of individual files, not a sequence I can open in Premiere. I searched through the forums but could not find a detailed answer.
From my sequence in Premiere I selected "send to speedgrade"
I applied color grading to the clips
For output I selected DPX baseline, this just spit out every clip as a dpx file but no sequence to maintain the edits. I don't see an option for DPX sequence anywhere.
I would be very grateful for some immediate help as I have a deadline soon.
    Thanks.

SpeedGrade is a different beast. To answer you last question: Adobe had less then half a year to develop any integration with the Creative Suite.

  • Need help please!  (Question around syncing, getting a new iphone & content

    Hi Folks,
Hope someone can answer some questions for me.
    1. I attempted to sync my iphone last night and it says it is sync'd to another computer. I tried all of my computers in my home and all of them say this. If I sync it with the computer it says it will erase data. What does it erase? just songs? I'm really worried about my contacts and downloaded (paid for) content.
    2. I ordered a 3GS and am excited to have it. How do I transfer all my content over to the new phone?
    3. I am also wondering about the purchased content on my iphone will I be able to transfer my licenses?
    4. Can I use my iphone for anything after I disconnect the service?
    thanks!

Yes, you can transfer the SIM if the used phone you purchase is either an AT&T iphone or an unlocked GSM iPhone.
Yes, you can remove the SIM with the power on.
Be careful in buying that used iPhone from eBay. If it is Activation Locked you will never be able to use it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5818

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Hello,
Ideally you need to boot from the disk as you have no other media advisable. (e.g your hard drive)
Without some form of system disk or restore you wont be able to diagnose the problem with your hard drive.
By using a Mac OS X system disk you can load up the Disk Utilities and repair the hard drive if shown it's available. If it's not available you would need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Without any disk to support you, you are going to struggle.
You can obtain replacement disk, both retail copies or system disk on the Internet.
If you know what version of Mac OS X you had install (I'm guessing that it would have been 10.3, but would recommend 10.4) A retail disk is normally black with a colored 'X' on it, while system disk are always.
Always try and obtain a copy of the system restore disks (Gray) for your iBook
Ebay is another outlet that has genuine system disk for sell, but like any auction site, it's as and when someone is selling them.
The only other thing you could do is take it to a Apple repair agent who could check the hard drive on your behalf. That way you can get confirmation if the problem is the drive or some other fault. They may even help restore the OS for you.
I can't think of anything else to try without some form of disk to help you.
There maybe just one other small thing you could try.
When booting up, firmly rest your palm of your hand on the iBook next to the tracker pad on the left side.
If it works then it's another fault that I'm aware of.

My iPad 2 is updated to iOS 6. My question is, can it take panoramic pictures? I tried looking around to see if i could figure out how, but no luck. Help please.

When you look at how they distribute apps it seems that iPods/iPhones are deemed more portable, which is why they have the better camera features, stuff like weather and passbook and stocks, while Apple doesn't seem to plan for the iPad being used as peoples cameras or being carried around with them on a daily basis....and I know evidenc is to the contrary. I've seen people using their iPad as a camera in national parks and at disneyland.
