Help please to revive my imac G5 that  is apparently exhausted!

No matter what apps I am using my imac screen keeps going black at random , and then the sleep light comes on. I either have to re-enter my login password or occasionally just press the mouse or a key and the screen opens up again, so that I can continue for a many moments as the screen will allow before it sleeps again. I have used disc utility and the HD seems to think it is OK. There are several permissions issues logged when I repair permissions, it says permissions repaired at the end but there were some warnings logged, I have no idea if they have anything to do with it.
Should I reset SMC or PRAM or anything else?
Really any help will be greatly appreciated.
The local apple store suggested not letting the screen sleep or using a screen saver in system preferences, i am seeing if that makes a difference now.

Hi Dale, I'm back again, earlier than I thought. I just had to try your suggestions.
I have reset the SMU, according to the apple advice pages. I am assuming from the information that that is the power mac version of SMC. IF not can you point me in the right direction please. The link for resetting SMC on your email did not work for some reason.
I tried Disc Utility starting up from the install disc, but the screen kept freezing. I will clean the disc and try again if all these other methods have not worked.
I did a safe boot instead.
I deleted the two .plist files: Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement,plist
users/username/Libary/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
But the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Autowake.plist was not there!!
Once I had restarted the computer again the 'PowerManagement'plist and the 'AutoWake"plist had not been replaced, but the "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist was back.
I have no idea if all this is OK. Or what happened to my missing file/files.
I am now putting the sleep option back to 30 mins. to see if all this has made a difference.

    I am trying to help my cousin connect his Samsung pc laptop with his brand new iMac through his wireless network.
    There are all kinds of partial connections going on, but the one main connection he needs still eludes me. And, that is his Samsung Laptop and iMac do not "see," let alone connect with each other.
    His Samsung Laptop has Macdrive 8 installed, & is running Windows 7.
    I have an Macbook Pro, and am also connected to his wireless network. I can see both his iMac and Samsung laptop in my finder's "Shared," section. (I can access the iMac's files, and though I can see the Samsung, when I try to Connect, it says, "Connection Failed."
    With his Samsung laptop, under Network, you can both see my MBP, and can access it's shared files too, (so Macdrive is working.) Yet, his iMac is strangely not seen, let alone able to connect, to the Samsung laptop.
    His iMac can also see and access my MBP's files, but can not see, let alone connect to the Samsung laptop.
    His iMac, and my MBP, both have Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Remote Login and Bluetooth Sharing all "ON."
    I need his Samsung laptop and iMac to be able to access each others files.
    Any ideas?

    macdrive is not necesarry for accsessing network shares. it's for accessing external HFS formatted HDDs, connected via USB/FW to the windows machine.
    did you check, if the SMB option is activated under filesharing on the imac?
    try temporary deactivating firewalls on both machines.

  • Finder quits constantly - help please! (i7 Intel iMac, 10.6.7)

    I've got an Intel i7 iMac, 27" with 8GB ram / 1TB HDD running Snow Leopard 10.6.7
    Since I bought my iMac, Finder constantly quits on me. I can have two folders open, either external HDD and MacHD, or two folders on the MacHD and when i'm dragging and dropping image files, Finder will just close and reset itself. In the course of using it over the past hr, it's reset about 20 times.... Everything stays mounted on the desktop, just the folder closes and reopens again...
    Also, when I use thumbnail view to view image files (quite large files), randomly and for no reason, all the images in the folder will pixelate and not display correctly, until eventually Finder resets itself again. However once reset, all the images stay pixelated until I reboot the Mac from scratch!!!
    I've tried numerous things, such as creating a new profile, doing a disk repair, verifying permissions and even an Archive and Install - but still the problem persists!! It's driving me mad....
    Any thoughts on what could be causing these problems and any idea how I can stop them from happening?

    I would contact AppleCare again and let them know what you have attempted and what the result was. Also I would recommend buying AppleCare to extend the warranty, you can find it discounted by buying from Amazon or LA Computer company or other authorized Apple resellers.
    If you have an AppleStore in your area  you can also make and appointment with a Genius and they can look it over for free and give you some recommendations.
    As a last resort doing a full erase and install is an option. However please make sure your system is backed up using Time Machine so you can easily restore your data.

  • Help please , New Mac Pro and fans that they do not increase of rpm's

    Hello everyone.
    I recently purchased a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 Ghz Nehalem. Without doing anything, just with firefox, the CPU temperature is 30 º, up there either.
    But if I run programs that require lots of CPU power, the fans are still turning the same rpm's. I have seen temperatures of 62 º and the fans do not go hand in 600rpm (Boosta usually always do what you do at 857rpm. It does not move). All this I have checked with iStat.
    I installed the smcfancontrol and I'm clearly not the fault of the fans, because this program can go make your rpm's Mac Pro, but, by itself, does not. I come from the PC world and am well aware that the motherboard is responsible for regulating the speed of the fans, depending on temperature.
    I called Apple and Spain have told me that is normal but the response seems a little insulting to my intelligence and experience with computers. I do not know what to do and do not know if this is normal.

    As for iStat, I would rely on Hardware Monitor, it is more accurate, or the free version which is Temperature Monitor.
    SmcFanControl was updated to 2.2 recently but I didn't check to see if it supports Mac Pro 2009 "Nehalem." It may or may not.
    Depending on your room and environment, air ventilation, 30-62 are reasonable.

    The trouble with fans and thermal sensors is they can wait too long to kick in and is better to boost the fans 200-300 rpm to keep air flowing and temperature cool, rather than wait for heat to build up inside.

    You can't change that address by design, but Apple allows you to create another two addresses and use instead they call those aliases and you can create and use those different for different people with the same account. Instructions here

    downloaded the updated iTunes and that did nothing. I then went through the form about $ very VERY carefully and discovered one field left blank. Once that was filled in, everything worked and I now have my free app.

    I have an iPhone 6 and during the setup I must have did something wrong and now I have my old iCloud account on it that I no longer remember the password, security questions, and no longer have the email address to that account.  I think I was hacked and my password and security questions changed. I want to log out of iCloud and start using my current iCloud account.  I know these are security measures, but how can I get logged out???   • Help please, with port forwarding settings

    I have an MSI RG60 wireless router (Ethernet hard wired to my XP Home PC) and don't know what settings to use for port forwarding, to enable my WinMX and BitTorrent clients to work successfully.
    I have the port numbers, and assume that this information goes in the Service Port box, i.e. 6699, or 6881-6889.
    I know which ports are TCP and which are UDP, but I don't know what IP address to enter or which Common Service Port type to choose. Can anyone help please?
    I'm pretty sure that other settings in my PC are OK as I have successfully been running a Belkin router for a couple of years, and have only replaced it with the new MSI unit due to reliability problems.

    It does indeed have port triggering, but it wants incoming and trigger port protocol info, along with trigger and incoming port numbers.
    How can I type ipconfig into either of teh clients...WinMx or Bit Torrent?

    Can't sync them like that. Update both to iOS 5 and sync both with iTunes then set up iCloud. All new purchases will be automatically downloaded to both devices when you turn on automatic downloads in the settings.

  • I keep losing the music from my iTunes library. Help please!!!

    For some reason when i shut my iTunes down the next time i open it all of the songs have gone from my library. I can restore them from my itunes music folder but i do not know why this is happening and its really starting to annoy me. Any help please?????

    That happens when the itunes database file doesn't get saved properly. By design, if itunes can't find a valid database file, it makes a new blank one.
    iTunes Library.itl is the name of the file.
    Is this on a Sony Vaio? There is a well-known bug with some bad sony software that erases the itunes database file. There are also problems with some ant-virus/security software packages not letting itunes save that file.

    Brian - The batteries are fine and there has only every been one keyboard paired with it. We have tried my MacPro keyboard as well, and it will not even recognise that there is a discoverable keyboard nearby.

    I got my artwork and saved it to my Desktop
    Opened up Microsoft Paint and clicked on "File" and "Open" and found it to get it on the screen to resize it
    Clicked "resize" and a box for changing it opened up
    Checked the box "Pixels" and "Unchecked maintain aspect ratio"
    Set Horizontal for 640 and Vertical for 480
    Clicked on "OK" and went back to "File" and did a "Save As" and chose JPEG Picture
    It came up "File Already Existed" and clicked "OK" (really did not care about the original artwork I found because wrong size)
    Went to iTunes and on the movie right clicked on "Get Info", clicked on "Details", then "Artwork"
    Go to the little box on the top left that shows your old artwork and click on it to get the little blue border to appear around it and hit "Delete" to make it gone
    Click on "Add Artwork" and find it where you put the one from above on your Desktop and hit "Open" and OK and your new artwork is now there and all good.
    Sounds like a lot of steps to follow but after around 5 or so you will fly through it. This worked perfect on my iPhone 6 Plus and I have artwork on my Home Videos now.

    Hi All, thank you for you suggestions.  I have been unable to find any website for the maker, but have looked at several Thai/cambodian sites incl <http://www.buycoms.com/Article/8435/index.asp>  which mentions the keyboard being suitable for tablet or windows.  No mention of iMac!  although the box is branded to indicate Mac compatable.
    I'm thinking that maybe it just will not pair with an iMac.
    Ill keep looking for the maker website, which might come on later in the future? maybe?
