Help - PowerBook 520c modem not recognised

I recently resurrected an old PowerBook 520c from my back shed. I was on the verge of binning it but tried installing some software for it. Could not find the original 7.6 disks it came with. But managed to find a Performa 7.5.1 CD which by SCSSI was able to connect it to my LC630.
To keep this post short the PowerBook boots up fine but I think i am missing something vital for it to "see" the modem. Just out of curiosity I tried dialling in to my ISP but no luckk. "Serial port is used by another application" or something along those lines.
I downloaded MacPPP on my current PowerBook G4 in the hope of "kick starting" the modem .
I vaguely using Config PPP in the old days. What do I need to tell the PowerBook there is a modem in there and that it isn'[t really a Performa. Do I need to download Global modem software. If so, any ideas where I may get it from.
Thanks anyone.
Cheers from Oz

JoeYou feel that i should get hold of the OS specific for the PowerBook, huh.Not quite. PBs 5x0 can run Systems/OSs from 7.1.1 to 8.1, but the latter requires the full complement of RAM (36MB) to run 8.0/8.1 elegantly. I don't know of a PB 5x0-specific CD, so your need is for a 'full install' set of floppies or a 'retail' CD. Just be prepared for the fact that the 7.5.3 download is 19 floppies. (Guess why CD-ROM was 'in' thereafter.) If you can attach a SCSI CD-ROM to your PB, using a CD (say one of OS 7.6.1, or 7.5.5, which do exist) will save your hair.
Unless your internal modem is far out, installation of a new OS will provide a new modem CCL (script) for whatever modem is in the PB. You need to know who the modem's maker is so that you can choose the relevant modem in Modem control panel.
The aforementioned AAUI port on the back is Apple's guess at the time, before there was an agreed ethernet port standard. The AAUI/RJ-45 adapter will bridge from the PB's AAUI port to a standard Cat5e ethernet patch (or a crossover) cable.
The way i have been getting CD roms thru to the PowerBook has been by SCSI the Performa with CD to the PowerBook. This sounds like SCSI disk mode, which, for all the reasons mentioned above, is NBG for the purpose of System/OS installation onto the PB.
For some reason the PowerBook won't SCSI with my external CD Rom which I used to use all the time in the mid 90s with my 475!Ah! That's because the PB is an older PowerBook. Very genteel. Very stylish. And utterly maddening. It has a compact HDI-30 SCSI port, not the DB-25 port used by desktops. It needs either a special HDI-30 (with only 29 pins and a light grey jacket) to CN-50 adapter, or a switchable 30/29-pin adapter and conventional peripheral CN-50/CN-50 cable, to connect successfully to the CD-ROM. Hold fast to the idea that it can be done (I use it often). There must also be a pass-through terminator between the CD-ROM and the PB. Fortunately, the CD-ROM, if it is one of Apple's, will supply termination power to the daisy-chain, and be terminated on the remote side.
The explanation takes longer than the setup does when you have the gear. There is more about this process in one of the previous posts if you need it.

  • Help my computer does not recognise my hard drive

    Hi All,
Yesterday I turned my computer on to find that it would not start up. I tried following advice etc about starting up in safe mode etc but no help what I have found is that he computer does not recognise the hard drive anymore so when I out the osx install disk in and run system profiler and disk utility it does not show a hard drive. I have not done anything for this to happen. Can anyone help me with this.
    Thanks.
    Paul

Instead of using older OS X CD/DVD install to a new drive.
Where is your backup and clone?
Buy some drives! that is a must.
Pick up a FW case, you will need it to put the old drive in, and later, so you have an external and off line drive for backups and maintenance.
A copy of TechTool Pro 4/5 and Disk Warrior (DW first).
    SuperDuper to clone your drives.
Demo of Prosoft Data Rescue 3 to scan the drive once you have a system and you put the 'dead' drive in FW case.
Then do backups and preventative maintenance on a very regular basis and have at least two backup sets.
If you have been doing that, and know and have read those instructions in the past....

  • Help! ADE does not recognise my Elexon 621 eb

Can anyone help me please.  I bought an Elexon 621eb, uploaded ADE and managed to put a couple of books on to it.  The next time I plugged it in ADE did not recognise it - turned out to be a problem with the e book.  I have a new one now but ADE does not recognise it when I plug it in.  How do I get it to recognise my new EB without loosing the books I've bought?  Thanks

Sharon, here are some generic things you can do.
First, make sure that the software on your new ebook reader is up to the
latest level.  You'll have to follow the manufacturer's instructions to do
    this.
Next, make sure that you've authorized or activated the ereader with the
manufacturer, so it's live and loaded - so to speak.
Then, plug it into our computer and let the computer recognize it as a USB
device.  When the computer reports that your new hardware is ready to use,
start ADE.  ADE 'should' find the device and note that it has in the left
hand pane of the Library screen.  When it does this, then you can drag and
drop the ebooks from ADE onto the ereader.
Finally, when the downloads appear to be complete. close ADE.  Then, use
your computer software to 'eject' the ereader so that the computer drops it
from its list of active USB devices.  How you do this depends on the
software you have on your PC.
After this is done, look at the ereader screen and make sure it is updating
itself with the new content.  Once that's completed, you 'should' be able to
read the books on your ereader.
    Hope this helps!

  • Please help - 7373 memory card not recognised

I bought a 2GB Kingston memory card for my nokia 7373. I put photos on it from a converter in my computer, but when I put it in my 7373 it does not recognise the card. However, my friend's 7373 recognises the card and it works fine. The memory card slot on my phone does not appear broken to me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make the card work in my phone of or what could be wrong?

if your card works on your friends phone then the mmc is fine something is wrong with your phone.it can be hardware.though it does not appear faulty from outside but there are filters which might have got spoilt and therefore it is better to visit to NSC.

  • TG582n Modem not recognised

    Hi
I am trying to configure my external HDD with my TG582n (telstra supplied) modem and my MacBook Air.
I am hoping to plug the HDD into the modem and allow sharing of files over my home network.
The modem works great as a router and we can all access the Wi-fi and printers etc, but when attempting to access the files on the modem (listed as Technicolour in the Shared Devices file), I am told that it is not supported.
The Technicolour gateway and configuration page for the modem recognises the HDD, but not my MacBook.
I use Mac OS X Lion
    Any advice would be great.

  • My powerbook G4 will not recognise my airport password?

Logging on the powerbook recognises the airport name but when asked for the password which we know is correct it says it is  incorrect why would that be?

    Hello,
Which version of the PowerBook do you own?
If it's the titanium model then it has an Airport card, which would not be compatible with wireless security setting of WAP2, so check your security setting on your wireless router.
If your security settings are WPA or WEP, then try resetting your PowerBook PMU and try again.
To rest the PMU follow this link.

  • HELP! USB device not recognised

    Please help, I bought a new ipod nano (2nd gen). I followed the quickstart instructions and connected it to my pc. I then got a message in a bubble that said;
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
I have tried reseting and everything on the support pages. I would be greatful if someone could please help me.
    Thanks Laura

I'm just starting with the basics here:
Have you tried restarting your computer, then connecting your iPod again?
If that doesn't do anything, have you tried all of the Five R's?
    The Five R's
If those steps don't help have you tried using a different USB cord for your iPod? (maybe borrow a cord from a friend who has an iPod with a USB cord, if that's possible).

  • Help. HD DVD not recognised by Toshiba player

I am burning a 40 second slideshow with no sound onto a looping HD DVD for display on a widescreen. I have burnt around 9 DVDs so far with a variety of settings, but the Toshiba HD-E1KY player I have to use recognises none of them. It simply brings up a box saying this is not a DVD.
Looking through the forum it seems Toshiba players may be an issue, but has anyone any advice on some simple settings that work with DVD SP 4.2.1
ANY suggestions welcome as I dont have enough hair left to keep ripping it out at this pace.

How did you create the HD DVD and how did you burn it?
Apple implemented some of the HD DVD specifications but not all of them and it seemed to be more of an issue that Toshiba had to update Firmware on some machines to make it closer to HD DVD. Does the message box say not HD DVD or not a DVD? What files/folders are in you build file?

  • Why is iTunes not recognising my iPhone?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody here could help me. iTunes is not recognising my iPhone (4S iOS 6.1.3) although my computer is recognising it as a camera and is set up to automatically import photos - I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I looked on the Apple troubleshooting page for this problem and the support given was clearly for an older version of iTunes so it could not help me.
It would probably be helpful to note that my iTunes was recognising my iPhone perfectly fine before I updated it to iOS 6.1.3 last night.

I should add that iTunes 'devices' in the prefs does show an iPhone backup from just before I installed Lion, however when I connected the first time, there was this issue. I have disconnected the iPhone and reconnected it, and now the iPhone comes up as connected to the backup, however the "sync" button is not present, but rather the "apply" one, suggesting I have made a change. So I guess it is all there and safe.

  • My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

    Hey there mbarikiwa,
If your iMac still has not recognized the usb modem, I would use the troubleshooting for Yosemite USB issues in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
If the device is connected to a USB hub:
Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
    Check your device’s USB connection
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

I recently connected my new ipad to my itunes, but now itunes will not recognise my ipod classic, and 50gig of music has gone. ipad connects ok but no longer ipod which has been there for two years! help!!!

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.
