Help! Powerbook won't boot..

Hello Mac Users;
I'm looking for some help! I was just sitting here at my desk playing a game on my pc, when I look over at my powerbook, an update has come up. Itunes and Mac OSX update. I reach over to do the update, type in my password, close Itunes, update goes through the process. Finishes the update, and then says I need to restart. I restart the Powerbook, and says something about entourage fails, and the ball just continues to turn for about 15-20min. I panic, press and hold the power button to turn it off. I restart the Powerbook, and hear the ding like it is going to start up, but the display is blank, upon further investigation, I can see the apple in the back ground and the gear turning. The backlight isn't coming on, and the fans will turn on when I power it off, and power it on.. I think I have reset the pvram or whatever, by taking battery out, and holding down powerbutton for 5 secs, I power it back up and still doing the same thing. What happened, and is there anyway for me to get this fixed? I do have apple care, but last time they had to replace the logic board it took 2 weeks. I would try to put in the tiger cd, except I watch the movie Blow this afternoon on it, and it is still in there. I tried to eject the dvd and it won't do anything.
Please help me. What can I do?

Hello Brandy,
If you cant see the screen at all, or if its very dark...like theres no backlight, i would suggest this to remove the disc.
immediatley after boot chime, press and hold the mouse button on the trackpad. this will automatically eject the disc in the drive, and make life easier for you.
also, try(seperately to removing the disc), after you hear the boot chime, press and hold apple-option-P-R, all together, untill you hear a second and 3rd boot chime then let them go. this may help revive your screen. otherwise, take it on in to the apple service provider. hopefully its something simple, but you never can tell.

I've been reading a lot of these forums, but still haven't figured out how to fix it on my laptop. So, I made my own topic.
Anyways. My dad gave me this laptop since he got a new one, so it's a hand-me-down which means I don't have this startup disk that I keep seeing talked about. I've tried Safe Boot, but when I do it with Command + V, it says all sorts of things that I just don't understand, and there is a lot of talk about the Apple Power Management? Such as:
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement isn't a valid mach-o (magic is cefaedfe)
error mapping module file com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement
can't map com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement in preparation for loading
couldn't alloc class "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement"
Etc, etc. And then the last lines that it ends with say:
BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2
[HCIController][configurePM] power parent ready after 1 tries
And it just stays there and doesn't boot up.
I honestly don't know what any of this means, or if it is even relevant to why my PowerBook won't boot past the Apple screen. If you have any information on how I could fix it, that'd be great. Also, if you have any questions that would help you figure it out, ask away and I will answer them.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Congratulations on your "new" PowerBook. I suggest that you begin with this combination procedure:
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
• Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
• Release the keys and immediately hold down Shift key to start up in Safe Mode.
• Log in and empty Trash.
• Restart normally and log in.
Let us know how it goes.

Powerbook won't boot

I have a powerbook G4 that's about 18 months old. I installed Tiger on it about 3 months ago, and have been having misc. problems ever since. It "spins" regularly, and can take up to 15 minutes to come out of sleep mode to where it can boot Safari.
Today it asked to do the Automatic Update, and began to spin again. I could operate other programs normally (Firefox, MSN Messenger, etc), so I just continued doing what I was doing. Auto Update hung, and I couldn't quit out of it, so I forced the computer to shut down (holding the power button for 10 seconds).
Now it won't boot.
I get the initial boot noise, and have tried to boot it normally, which brings me to the initial screen with the gray spinner, and safe mode (shift key), which does the same and then shuts off after about 45 seconds.
Help, please! I LOVE my Mac and would like to be able to use it.

Did you run the correct version of DiskWarroir on that drive?
You would need version 3.0.3 for 10.4.5. Any other version will not work and could cause a kernel panic.
If that is'nt it mI have kernel panic help for you if you need it. I really think you need to run the AHT disk though. Too bad you don't have it. Do you or your friend have Tech Tool Pro version 4.1.1? That utility will test all your hardware also.

G4 PowerBook won't boot unless I press Option key - powers off after 20secs

When booting up, my PowerBook only gets as far as the initial black screen and audio chime. After approx. 20 seconds the hard disk/super-drive dies with a high-pitched squeak, just before it was supposed to show the grey screen and then the Apple logo.
If I hold down the Option key, it boots up fine! However, Option-V fails to display the Verbose mode messages (has only done so once after I flashed the PROM, has not done it since.)
I've re-installed Tiger 10.8.4, flashed the PROM, removed the battery and reset the Power Management Unit with 5-second power-switch, but still no change.
Could it be caused by a problem with a faulty video DVI adaptor or socket? (plugs in directly under the power switch - I got an unwanted power-down message as I unplugged the adaptor tonight). The last time the machine worked ok was when I had it plugged in to a multimedia projector throught the DVI adapter.

I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the OS.
* A clone of the OS on another disk boots fine - this would not boot if the issue was a system one.
* A vanilla Snow Leopard install on the same (not working disk, but 2nd partition) won't boot either. If the issue was with the system this one would boot.
* Erasing this second partition didn't help.
(I've already done all the above suggestions using Single user mode etc.)

+There is a built-in Unix utility in MacOSX that can be used to set your partition "Active". It is called Fdisk+
However, when I use Fdisk my disk reports a negative size:
fdisk: 1> p
Disk: /dev/rdisk3 geometry: -5415437/4/63 [-1364690128 sectors]
However, it also does this with another 1.5TB disk I have suggesting that the size of the disk is a problem. Is there another way to make the disk 'active' as this seems to be where the problem lies.

Powerbook won't boot. Caps Lock Light and NumLock Light on. No other sounds

I'm posting a problem I'm having with my powerbook in the hope someone can give me advice as to what the problem could be. Or how i can fix it.
I have a PB G4 12" (1.33) running OS 10.4.11. All of sudden one day the laptop would not boot. I have tried the PMU reset, taking out the memory, plugging in an external firewire drive, etc but nothing works.
The laptop just won't boot, but I know power is being transmitted as the CapsLock light works, as does the NumLock (which is oddly activated by pressing F5).
Any suggestions/ideas on what the issue can be? Is it a dead mainboard/logic board? Or DCtoDC board?
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Powerbook won't boot past apple screen, disk utility can't repair

Last night I applied the most recent software updates, I don't remember exactly what they were but there was a Java update, a security update, a quicktime update and an itunes update. after the required restart, my powerbook g4 won't boot past the apple icon screen.
I can't boot it into safe mode or single user mode.
I can start it up in target disk mode and transfer a handful of files/directories at a time before it hangs.
When I try to run the repair in Disk Utility against the target disk, it gets about halfway before the following:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
the disk doesn't make any grinding or anything, just a few clicks when it tries to boot but nothing bad sounding.
Is my computer hosed? Is it worth bringing it to the genius bar?

Hi, Pat. How much time did you give DW to complete its work? Locating the data it needs to rebuild your directory can take a while — that's the step at which DW far outperforms other utilities. It digs deeper and tries harder than anything else, and that can take a long time. The longest successful DW "fix" I've seen reported here in the seven and a half years I've been participating in Apple Discussions was *14 days* of continuous work to find the necessary data and reconstruct a hard drive directory from it. That was after all other disk utilities had been tried and had failed; it was the user's last hope to save data that hadn't been backed up anywhere. If you haven't allowed DW at least a few hours to accomplish its task, give it another chance. And don't try to use the computer for anything at all while DW is working.

Powerbook won't boot from CD

Trying to upgrade the OS on my 17" Powerbook G4 and it won't boot from the Panther disk or the Tiger disk. I can't even get it to boot from DiskWarrior CD.
I was able to boot from the original restore disks that came with the machine, but the OS is 10.2.7. I was able to run Disk Doctor, but that didn't seem to do anything.
Anyone experiencing similar issues

I had the opposite problem. I was unable to boot from the restore disc that came with my powerbook, but my retail Tiger DVD worked. I copied the restore disc using my Mac mini, and the copy booted fine. Seems like the slot-loaders are a little picky sometimes.
You could probably convince Apple to exchange the media.

Powerbook Won't boot - And disk permissions won't repair

My powerbook G4 won't boot normally or in safe mode but will load up using the leopard disk to instilation page. Once there the folowing issues become aparrent;
1. Not enough space to archive and install
2. Disk persmssions can't be verified or repared (the disk can be both verified and repaired and appears normal)Have waited overnight for this to complete and it hasn't.
3. Whilst it connects to networks it doesn't appear on them to allow data to be removed to make space
4. Attemting to use disk utility restore function to copy the hard disk onto a external hard drive fails (bar about 1/8 of the way across predictions stat at 1hr58 and reach 6 hours when the powerbook starts making a lot of noise nad the external hard drive activity appears to halt)
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Reset PMU and Powerbook won't boot past the blue screen with "Mac OSX" box

Hi-
Problem: I tried to reset my PMU, and now when my computer restarts it won't go past the blue screen with the "Mac OSX" logo in the box (and progress bar, that never fills up). I then also tried to reset PRAM, but it still won't boot properly.
Backstory--
I've had my 12-inch Powerbook G4 for about 3.5 years already, so things are starting to get a bit out of whack. I replaced my battery about 3 months ago, which has been great, but recently my power-cord has been wonky (having to unplug it and replug it in to make sure it actually charges the computer, the light flickers on and off, etc). Today it actually started producing SPARKS at the place where the thin white wire meets the white plastic power brick, so I decided it was time to get a new one. Brought it home, plugged it in, and since it seemed like the battery indication icon on the menu bar was all out of sync with the powercord colored-light, I tried restarting it a few times, but still the same. Then, I decided to reset the PMU, which may have been a huge mistake. And now it won't boot past the blue screen... Any advice? I'm going to try restarting it in "safe" mode, but I'd be so grateful for any recommendations. Hope I haven't done something irreversibly stupid with the PMU reset.

Thanks for all of your great suggestions and info-- here are a few responses.
1) The disk I just borrowed from my friend appears to be the full retail version-- it looks just like the links that Ali B sent, and is in a large box saying "Mac OSX Tiger, version 10.4"... will this be the proper disk to do an Erase and Install? The only other disks I have came with my Powerbook when it was originally purchased, when it came Panther (I think, 10.3?). Would I use both sets of these disks to do erase and install? Or only the Tiger OSX disks?
2) I get the sense that Disk Warrior or Tech Tool might be necessary, but does it make sense to TRY to do erase-install before buying them? Also, are there any downloadable (for pay) versions of this, or would I need to track down the actual physical disks in Hong Kong or wait for them to be shipped?
3) I haven't yet tried the S.M.A.R.T. test, should I do that first? What is the procedure? Are there any results or ways to know if the drive is too far gone (so that I might instead replace the internal hard-drive) instead of pay 100 USD first to do the disk repair?
4) Cornelius said: "An alternative would be to completely reformat and erase the entire HDD, then re-install and restore your data from backup. If your backup is in the form of a bootable clone of the entire HDD, you can just clone it back." I use Super-Duper to back-up and the most recent one copied the whole thing-- what would be the later procedure of "cloning it back"?

Help: iMac won't boot past Grey logo screen with spinning lines

My fiance's iMac (intel based) running snow leopard (upgraded from Leopard a couple months ago) will not boot past the logo and spinning lines. This started after at attempting to restart after installing updates to Safari and iTunes.
When booting in verbose mode I get these lines:

Then it just stops and does nothing.
I've unplugged everything except the apple keyboard and mouse. Ethernet is not connected.
She doesn't seem to have the original disc that came with the computer, but I do have the Snow Leopard upgrade disc.
What do I do? It won't boot in Safe Mode either, freezes at the same spot.
I'm not a particularly savvy Mac user as I recently embraced them when we moved in together.

Repairing permission is not the first answer. Should try to run fsck and reset the PRAM
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
At the command-line prompt type:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, typerebootat the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

HELP: T440s won't boot after unsuccessful memory update

I have a T440s that came with 4GB RAM. Purchased a G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB DDR3L 1600 SO-DIMM (1.35v, PC3-12800, 11-11-11-28) from Newegg and installed in T440s. I did disable the internal battery from BIOS before installed the memory. However, I found my T440s won't even boot. I then tried the memory chip in two other laptops and found this SO-DIMM is defective so it's on the way back to Newegg.
Now my big problem is that my T440s won't boot anymore even with original configurations. Push the power button, there is no response from T440s. However, I do observed LEDs blink. When only use battery, then LEDs give one short blink every few seconds. LEDs will give four short blinks every few seconds if I plug in the wall power supply.
Did I kill my T440s ? Any way that can wake it up or I just need to contact Lenovo for warranty service?

HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)
MB: MSI K8N NEO
MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)
VC: ATI 9800 Pro 450/380
PSU: ANTEC True 550w
Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now. It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off. All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't. Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out. It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still. I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that. arg. So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

HELP: iMac won't boot up.

Old iMac, due for replacement. Working as expected until other day. Now won't boot past initial apple splash screen, then dies after 10 seconds.

Sounds like a hardware failure, you can run Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode however you will need the original install discs. In order to get a replacement set you need to call AppleCare, give them a credit card number and the serial number of the machine and for a nominal charge they will replace them. However your machine is pretty old if still running Leopard. You may want to consider options such as taking it to your local Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed and repaired or possibly even upgrading to a new machine if necessary.

HELP! Won't boot update of 10.6.5

I just installed 10.6.5 on my 13" Aluminum Unibody Late 2008 Macbook up from 10.6.4 and now my Mac side won't boot up (I have a windows side that I have to select by holding down option when the white screen comes up). What happened was, I installed the 10.6.5 update and then rebooted my computer, and the apple came up with a loading bar like it was installing the new update, and the update bar completed, but then it started over, and then the computer just turned off. And now every time I try to boot up the mac side, it does the loading bar, completes it, and then shuts off.
What do I do?

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
Click _*Repair Disk.*_
Restart your computer when done.

Powerbook won't boot up! Please help

So here is the story. I recently cracked the screen on my 12" Powerbook on my way to school, so I have been looking for a replacement for a while now. I found someone on craigslist who was selling the exact same powerbook but the motherboard/logic board was out. I bought it from him for cheap hoping i could use the LCD screen to replace my broken one. Also, his had a DVD R burner and mine only had a CD burner so i replaced that also. I went into the computer and did all the necessary changes and put it all back together.
I thought it was all good, but when i boot up the computer, the screen is black and there is no chime or anything. The fan and DVD drive sound like they are moving and on and the caps lock button lights up, but thats it! It hums for about 5 minutes then shuts off.
If anyone can help, that would be great! Thank you

I used the cable that was with the DVD drive. Then took that out and put in my old CD-RW drive with its own cable and that worked and it booted up.
I only swapped the screens and not the logic board.
Is there something wrong with the DVD drive then? it was plugged in to the logic board and it didnt boot properly.
