Help! PowerBook Won't Power On and Start Up!!!

Hi All,
I’m hoping someone out there can help! My PowerBook G4 15 Inch (Original model) won’t start at all. When I push the power button, nothing happens. Nothing at all. No lights, no sounds, no fan, nothing. It was working fine when I put it away on a shelf in my closet about a year ago, but when I took it out to look up a document, I found that I couldn’t turn it on. It hasn’t been dropped, knocked, exposed to water, etc. It’s literally just been sitting on a shelf for about a year. Some information which may help:
1. It appears that the battery does not hold a charge anymore, because I left the laptop plugged in overnight and the indicator lights on the battery still do not light at all when the power status button on the battery is pressed. However, I don’t think this should affect startup when the AC adapter is plugged in – the PowerBook should start up regardless of the power status of the battery. (By the way, I know that the AC adapter is good because I tried it on a friend’s PowerBook and it works fine.)
2. I’ve already reset the PMU (several times) by pushing the little button on the rear of the PowerBook with the end of a paper clip. That doesn’t change anything either.
3. I’ve removed the battery and left the laptop plugged in for approximately 15 hours just in case the internal PRAM battery needed a charge after having been stored for so long. No luck there, either.
I can’t understand what could have happened to it just sitting on a shelf! I had another Mac laptop sitting right next to it for the same amount of time, and that one started up just fine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be and a potential solution(s)?
Many many thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

it seems fairly cheap and easy to fix
Yes, which is why I'd tackle that first. My first suggestion would have been to try the power adapter with a meter or on another Mac or check, but you're a step ahead of me on that, so aside from a possible, but highly improbable death while resting on the shelf, the b.u./PRAM batt is the obvious issue.
I do hope that's what this turns out to be
Me too. It'd be worth it for your time and money, whereas other, major, components would likely not be cost effective, given the PB's age.
I'll update with a post when I know more.
Please do, and good luck!

The small battery is a PRAM battery. It could be the cause of the non stsrt.

  • My iPad 2 won't power up and will not recover in iTunes

My iPad 2 will only power up to the Apple screen and then after around 60 seconds of being on that screen it switches itself off and starts again.
I have tried to recover the iPad through iTunes by pluging the cable into the laptop, pressing and holding the home button and then connecting the cable to the iPad. iTunes detected that the iPad was in recovery mode and started a software download, even though it said the software was up to date. About halfway through the 25 minute update iTunes gave a message stating 'iTunes could not connect to Terrie's iPad because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter the passcode before connecting it to iTunes'. I can't power the iPad up to enter the passcode, so I can have iTunes restore it! Any idea how I can get around this?

    Hi,
From what you've said, I can only suggest two things:
    1) Do a reset by holding the on/off and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears, or in this case, for about ten seconds.
    2) If that fails, visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Approved Service Retailer.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

  • T|X won't power on - and loses time/date settings

I just bought a Palm T|X. After charging it, I set it up and then unplugged it. The problem is, it won't power up unless it's plugged in. When it does power up, the time and date settings have defaulted to 1/1/2005 00:00. However, it did keep the third party programs and contact data.
    Any ideas?

One thought: Return it immediately to the store where you got it, if you just bought it, and get a replacement or your money back. .
If you can't, call Palm and send it in for repair, or if you can, replacement. Palm has a couple of bugs, one is the start button. If you  can't get it to start, then it doesn't work. For what you paid, it should. The reboot (which is what is resetting your time and date)  may indicate a short or other non software problem. Don't fiddle. Get rid of it, get it replaced or get it fixed.

  • HELP! Macbook wont power up and keeps on ejecting.

I just updated the software on my new 1.83 Intel Core MacBook by clicking on that link under the apple-about this mac tab... after it installed all the software, a message popped up and said something about quitting all applications, shutting down the computer and holding the power button until the light flashes repeatedly. I've never seen anything like this but I did that and now the computer wont even start! The light on the front comes on, the screen blinks once and the CD slot keeps on ejecting .... over and over again.... There is NO DISC! If I put in a disc it tries to push it out and then takes it in... but you can still hear it ejecting... but this time more quiet, and now you cant actually eject the disc unless you turn off the power, turn it back on, and then quickly hit the eject button. I dont want it to damage itself so I just held the power button again until the whole thing shut off. I feel like punching the computer!
I also tried the to reset it by taking out the battery and holding the power button for 5 sec... then putting the battery back and starting it up... but that didn't do a got dam thing.
Does anyone know why my Mac crapped on me out on me?!
    Thanks!

I Could Kiss You! That seemed to do the trick! I dont know why it cra pped out on me half way through this process.... but it updated now and all seems well. The only thing is that when I went to Utilities on my PowerMac... Disc Utilities doesn't seem to exist there... so I opened it up using the help tab and when I got to it, the FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg didn't even exist... it doesn't even seem to be in the computer. Have any idea about that one?
I had to download the dmg off the website.
Thank You so much for the help too! You Just saved my laptop and turned it back from a Huge Paper weight to a Working MacBook.

  • Pavilion dv6 laptop - won't power up, and other weirdness

This laptop (model dv6-3143us) was working fine... and now suddenly won't power on. However, with the (fully charged) battery inserted, the LCD screen is on - blank, but very definitely on, even though the rest of the computer is not.
I removed the battery, tried a hard reset, swapped the AC adapter with a known good one. The tiny LED next to the power input jack does not come on. Pressing the power button - nothing happens. The AC adapter's LED is lit, and it will power another identical laptop.
The LCD coming on part is what really confuses me. Maybe a short somewhere? Ideas appreciated!

    Jon-o-groats,
Sorry to hear that, if you decide to go ahead and get the computer repaired, here is the service and maintenance guide for your computer. On page 91 it shows you a list of the motherboards that should work for this particular computer, next to each board there is a part number that will allow you to search for online for comparisons and prices.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Please help, g5 won't go past grey "start-up" screen

Apologies if there is a better forum for this question:
G5 doesn't get past the light grey start-up screen now, and after a while the fans begin to slowly ramp up in speed until they reach maximum. Problems began when in Itunes the machine locked up totally, mouse wouldn't work nor keyboard. I have unplugged power cord and waited various amounts of time, reset the PRAM, and replace the system clock battery.
Not sure what to do next, Apple Service?
    Thanks in advance!
    Larry

Problem solved! Luckily this one didn't require a visit to a service center. Here's what worked.
At power on, launched open firmware (command option o and f)
ejected disc tray with "eject disc", put in OS X.
at this point I actually had to re-power up the computer because I then typed "mac-boot" and of course got the same problem.
On power up, held down C, joy of joys machine booted from disc!
Opened disk utility and checked my boot volume for errors, tested okay.
Checked the logs and found unusual "bootsrap....unkown error code".
figured, well i've gone this far, repaired disc permissions as well, found quite a few permission errors (had been a while since I last repaired).
Closed disk utility and restarted from boot volume.
    TA-DA!
At some point, I reset the PMU with a button push on the inside of the machine, which didn't apparently do anything, bacause the machine didn't boot after i did that.
I also had replaced the system clock battery, which of course didn't fix the problem, but owing to the fact that I had experience several clock type errors previously, I most certainly needed to replace it anyway. Thanks to all who responded, especially Dale for pointing me in the direction of Mac 101 and open firmware.

  • HT201263 My Ipad worked perfectly and one day it went dead.  It won't power up and I have tried the tips online.  The screen is black.  It has been charged.

My Ipad worked perfectly but one day it would not power up and hasn't in a couple of weeks.  I have tried the tips on line and have put it on the charger but the screen remains black.

I suggest booking an appointment with the genius bar, there most likely is a hardware problem with the iPad. Apple will replace the iPad if it is in warranty. If it isn't in warranty they will still replace it with a price

  • Powerbook won't power on---please help!

Left Powerbook on overnight. This morning couldn't wake it up. Blue light at latch pulsing but nothing would wake it. Also noticed no color at battery charge input where it is usually green or orange, there was no color.
Finally took off the battery, left it off for the internal to run down, and when the pulsing light finally went off, I put the battery back. And now I still can't get it to power on.
I would appreciate any advice on what to do next.
    Thanks!

    Try a PMU reset:
    1) If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2) Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3) Wait 5 seconds.
$) Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • My phone won't power up, and buttons at bottom of screen flashing on / off

My phone was low on charge and shut off on it's own.  I did let it charge up for a while, I did not turn it on.  Then later tried to power on, but it did not respond.  Tried holding in the power button to power it on repeatedly to no avail.  Re-plugged into the charger, and the bottom buttons began to flash on about every 4 seconds.  Tried unplugging, and removing the battery, re-inserting battery.  got No response when attempted to power up, but figured battery may have been too low.  Plugged in - flashing. unplugged, removed battery and then replugged in - started flashing again....  screen remains off, only the 4 'buttons' at the bottom are flashing (white)
Anyone have this problem before?  I will try to leave it plugged in, thinking maybe when charge is brought back up, perhaps it will work???.... but it concerns me that it continues to flash...
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Judy

  • RAID won't power down and then lost one of the 2 drives

I tried to power down my RAID before leaving the studio last night and it would not shut down. Both RAID drives were functioning when I shut down my G5. I didn't shut down power to the RAID for fear I might corrupt or lose some files.
Now one of the two drives (the lower one I think, labled Drive 2) is not mounting. I still haven't unplugged it. What should my next step be? HELP!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Brian,
    1) If you don't have a good backup policy, this should spur you to ensure you have one. You should ALWAYS have a backup policy, even with protected storage like Xserve RAID. Heck, large organizations have full offsite backups of their data on multi-million-dollar EMC Symmetrix and IBM Shark systems. Back up everything you can't afford to lose at a moment's notice.
    2) Once you have a backup, you may wish to upgrade to the 1.5 firmware, if you haven't already done so.
