HELP !!! Powermac is NOT starting

Hi Powermac users, awoke this morning to find that my powermac G5 first gen. Dual 2Ghz is not booting power button light lights up then off do hear relay clicks from the powersupply when the power button it pressed and also when the powercord is installed and removed. After a few click of the power button I now smell something burning ie electronic smell. Removed all but one memory stick reset PMU or SMT near memory bank. Changed PRAM battery to new. No help thinking powersupply and or logicboard/processor failure.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Jim

Hi Jim,
Could be bad RAM, bad power supply or a bad power switch or connection. I would start by removing all RAM, leaving only the Apple supplied RAM and reboot to see what happens. Also, there is cable of wires leading from the logic board to the power switch, located on the lower left. Check these connections.
My guess is a failed RAM chip.
Best Regards

  • HELP : MacBook will not start !! Well, actually ...

Hello to you all Apple/Mac lovers ,
As the title said, my MacBook has gone wild. Here's the thing : I start it up, the gray apple appears and the spinning wheel under it. After an unusually long time of spinning, my computer ... shuts down. And that's it. Hopefully one of you will be able to fix it, usin the info below.
I tried to fix it, and here's what I did :
    - I first used the Apple Hardware test (by inserting the installation DVD and pressing D on start up) : no errors detected.
    - Then I used the disk utility (by inserting the installation DVD and pressing C on start up) : there, it said that there was an "Invalid sibling link", and that it couldn't complete the verification or repair because "The underlying task reported failure on exit".
    - Lastly I used the "Startup Disk" application (found with the Disk Utility) and it first showed me 3 things : the Mac OS 10.5.3 folder from my hard disk (which is what it usually uses), the Mac OS 10.4.8 Install Disk, and then a Network Startup (but that's not gonna work). However it was quite late in the night so I chose the option "Turn Off" (in one of the top menus) and went to bed.
The next morning I repeated the previous procedure but this time the Leopard folder did not show up !! This is where I am at right now. Here are what seem to be my options :
    - Re-install 10.4.8 (it will store 10.5.3 in a folder called "Previous System"). It says that I will not be able to boot from there anymore - is that true ? I should like to, because if the system needs to erase all data from my hard disk, then I will need to use my Time Machine backup from my external HD (and therefore will need Leopard).
    - Wait for my dad to bring me the Leopard Install DVD (he'll be there next Sunday, 29th of June) from which I will be able to re-install Leopard.
Now I really do not know what is the problem - and if re-installing the OS will solve anything. There is still this strange Hard drive error - any idea if 1. that is the cause of the problem 2. what it means 3. If I need to fix it 4. how do I do that ?
Thanks for all your advice and time ,
    #Charles

Your idea, Simon, seems best in my case. Now just out of curiosity - you say that I can recover all my files once I get back to Leopard using Time Machine, but will I also recover preferences/settings, from system preferences to application settings ? My question really is : is there anything I will not be able to recover ?
Anyways, now on to you adsfushi72. You say I need to get my "important files off the hard drives" - you mean I need to back them up in case my hard drive is broken and will need to be re-formatted in the process of re-installing, right ? Well the entirety of it is backed up on another, external hard drive, using Time Machine. The last backup was about 17 minutes before the problem appeared so all I could lose in the process is a few lines of text I typed in between. I love Apple ...
And how about safe/verbose modes ? What exactly are they ? I've used safe mode on a PC before, but I don't know how to start up in that mode on a Mac, what it exactly does or is, how to handle it, and why I would do that right now - I'm not saying I don't feel like doing it, I just want to know what information it could give me or in what way(s) it could help solve my problem. Same applies to verbose mode.
Lastly, a little update : Now when I start up my MacBook I see the Flashing "?" on a folder, which means it can't find a system folder to boot from - right ? So then I start up with alt/option pressed - and it does not detect any drive. When I insert the Mac OS X install Disk is only sees that. Is the invalid sibling link of my hard drive causing it to be unusable the system to boot from or what ?
The weirdest part is that now the hard drive seems to be absent. Before, it was there but I couldn't boot from it - since it seems to be damaged -, but now it doesn't even recognize or see it anymore. It seems the repair attempt is what made it change that way ... anyways thanks for all your ideas .

  • Help, Render will not Start?

    Hello,
I mainly work with Edius but am using Premiere CS4 to finish a greenscreen project.
I have the work area set and when I go to Sequence-Render work area nothing starts to render.
The render dialogue box appears but no progress is made and when I go to "render details" no data is shown, just -- next to each line.
I have used Premiere back in the 1.5pro days, so I am familiar with the program.
This is a 1080p30 project with a 720p sequence if that is causing the issue.
    Thanks for your help!

I mainly work with Edius but am using Premiere CS4 to finish a greenscreen project.
Not the best of approaches, since PR sucks for chroma keying. Keylight in AE or Ultra CS3 are much better.
This is a 1080p30 project with a 720p sequence if that is causing the issue.
In CS4 there are no project settings, only sequence settings and your best bet is to use sequence settings that match your source material.
I have the work area set and when I go to Sequence-Render work area nothing starts to render.
Do you see a red bar over the timeline?

  • PowerMac G5 not starting properly

Sorry to repost but I accidently marked my discussion as answered. Please see:https://discussions.apple.com/message/17155939#17155939
    Hi,
    I have the following machine:
    Model Id:PowerMac11,2
    Processor Name: PowerPc G5 (1.1)
    Dual 2.3 GHz
    2GB RAM
    Problem:
Starting 12/28/2011 After I came home from work the Machine would not boot up. The white light would light up, the fans would start spinning normally but there would be no chime and nothing else would respond (keybord, monitor, etc). After a few seconds the fans will start spinning and getting louder. I forced quit it by holding down the power button. I tried to restarted and would get the same results.
    I tried  the following:
Disconnected all devices/cables except keybord and monitor
Removed video card and put back in
    reset the SMU
have not tried resetting PMU because the keybord was not getting power
    removed all RAM
installed only 2 sticks of RAM
After doing all of the above to no avail, I put my ram back in (properly) and called it quits for the night. I unplugged the power cord from the back of the machine.
The next day after work I came home, plugged in the power cord and started the machine. To my surprise it bootted up just fine. I ran the utility tool to verify the disk and it failed (knowing that this is not the problem I decided to boot off the Installl disk and repair anyways). I hit restart and was back to the computer not responding and reacting like the night before (no response, then fans start reving). I tried to restart it a few times to no avail. Again I pulled the power cable out from the back of the machine and went to bed.
Today I came home and like the night before it started up, I booted of the CD this time and repaired the disk, re-verified and  all was well. I tried to restart it and i'm back to the machine not responding.
Any help with this is hugely appreciated!! Could it be the pram battery?
    Please advice.
    Thanks - Frank

Frank, if you have a multi-meter you can check it out, it's hard to find any Apple people to still work on G5s at all, maybe a few independent AASPs though.
Here's some more info on G5 PSU voltage values:

  • Help, safari will not start at all since update to newest version

Help, I am an admitted computer idiot- I always have had Macs because they are intuitive. My software updated automatically this week to the newest version of Safari, and now I cannot open Safari at all, I cannot even get to the Safari menu. I am using Firefox to type this - and I would rather use Safari as I am used to it. When I click on Safari the icon bounces up and down, then an error message appears saying that Safari quit unexpectedly, and do I want to send a message to Apple. I have clicked that message tab about 1000 times, no response.
Can someone help me fix this- using very simple instructions, thank you

We need to see a crash report, so restart Safari and when it crashes, copy the entire crash log and paste it into a reply window here. Notifying Apple is fine, but they will not respond, so you shouldn't expect that.

  • G4 powermac does not start up

My good old Power Mac G4 with a brand new battery doesn't start up.  The power button on the tower won't depress.    The power button on the display doesn't respond either.  I'd like to keep this computer (alive).  What is the possible problem?  (besides old age) Is it repairable? If it is, any idea on the cost? Somebody help me with a clue.  It was getting harder to start up a few months ago, but I had some response.  Now it is total silence.  Thanks

  • [help] Z77A-GD65 not starting fully

ok so when i turn on the motherboard all the fans in my PC turn on and the LED1 light turns blue for about a second then everything shuts off. My power button stays green even when everything else shuts off and the alarm LED is OFF. I have tried re plugging everything in and am placing only one stick of RAM in the correct spot. here are my system specs:

    Hi
I just got that same board.
If you keep looking at the Diagnostic display on the board while starting the PC, then just notice what the code is when it stops. The display should change code according to what init state its in.
That way you can determine at what initialization step it fails. Check the manual for the error codes.
For example if it stops at Cpu Initialization, there is a good chance that the CPU is faulty or simply overheating if cooler is not properly seated. From what you explain, it could sound like Overheating CPU.
Are you using the H80 cooler in this build? It can be a bit tricky to mount properly.
You can also try the Bios switch to swap over to the backup Bios. In case the bios is corrupt.

  • Need help with Quicksilver not starting up

Hi, this is my backup computer. It doesn't get a lot of use since I have a Mac Pro, but I still want to have it up and running again. The symptoms are when I press the power button it appears to come on, the fans inside power up but the white power button on the front doesn't stay lit up. Also there is no start up chime sound when it is turned on.
I have opened her up and removed and checked each memory stick. I realize it could be one of several things. I am hoping it is just the battery. That would be a cheap and easy fix. If it a bad logic board or something along those lines it wouldn't be worth repairing. I just wanted to hear some more thoughts on some other possibilities I might not have considered.
It is a 2001 Quicksilver 867 upgraded with a dual core 1.5GHz. Thanks in advance for any tips

If the Mac has not been connected to AC power for a while, it's most likely that the internal PRAM battery has discharged & needs replacement.
Check this site for battery part numbers and sources. https://sites.google.com/site/macpram/mac-pram-nvram-cuda-pmu-battery-tutorial Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
    Some things to try.
    * Reset the PMU http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939
    * Resetting the Logic Board - Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    * Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • Help, Mail will not start

Hiya, I am relatively new to macs. (to my shame I am more familiar with pcs). I was using mail earlier today for work, and yet now when I try to open it, it immediately quits. bringing up a box "The application Mail quit unexpectedly'
I have tried restarting etc, but to no avail. Anyone seen this before? any ideas?
    thanks,
    sillyfishyboy

    Hi Sillyfishyboy.
Does Mail crash immediately upon start up or when it starts to download messages?
If the former, the cause could be a troublesome message with HTML content that Mail tries to load every time it starts up. Try this:
    1. Launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This should prevent Mail from trying to select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
    2. Go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled -- having this setting enabled is a really bad idea for spam-related security reasons anyway.
    3. If the preview pane is visible in the main Mail window, drag the horizontal separator bar between the messages list pane and the message preview pane to the bottom of the window, or just double-click within the separator bar, so that the preview pane disappears and only the messages list is visible. This prevents Mail from trying to load a message when it is selected in the messages list pane.
    4. You should now be able to select the message that's causing Mail to crash and either delete it or move it to another mailbox, to prevent Mail from accidentally trying to open it -- the problem could be a bug in Mac OS X that might or might not be fixed in a future version.
    5. If you want to make the preview pane visible again, drag the horizontal separator bar up from the bottom of the window, or just double-click on it again.
