  • No audio when compressing .mov to Mpeg transport stream (m2t)

Since reinstalling OSX and FCS2 I don't get audio when I compress a quicktime movie to mpeg transport stream, used to be able to do it. I'm playinh the m2t in mpeg streamclip and assume it will handle audio, settings in compressor look ok, (48K 16 bit) although the button for multiplexed mpeg i/layer 2 audio is greyed out and unticked !?

Answering my own query here, but in case it helps someone else ... there appears to have been sound all along, at least since I ticked the mpeg audio box on the extra tab. When the file is playing in mpegstreamclip you have to work the volume fader down and up again at which point the sound comes on (yes it was faded up initially)
Wierd one, its almost as though there was a faulty physical fader rather than a virtual one.

  • IDVD copies the movie but not the sound

    Hi,
With IDVD one-step-dvd I try to copy edited movies from a Sony Handycam directly to DVD. Unfortenatly it copies only the images but not the sound. Anybody has the same experience and knows the solution? When I import the movie into IMovie the sound is allright.

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.

  • HELP....AVCHD / MPEG files not playing correctly!

I have been trying to download video that was shot with the new Sony FS100 camera that I'm told are AVCHD or MPEG files to my older Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 timeline, but they are not playing correctly. When I reverse the field dominance, the image plays better but the sound is strange (I was able to speed the sound to 450% and it worked better, but then the balance of the sound from the clip is lost somewhere.).
Any suggestions to make these files play and work correctly? I tried converting them to AVI files but that showed up completely black on the timeline! Anything I've tried either affects the video or audio negatively!  I try either makes the image play or stutterThis was shot in regular SD format, NOT HD, so they should be able to play on  a standard timeline. Can anyone suggest anything to help please? Much appreciated!

Thanks for your reply, I ran it through Media Info. Here are the results:

  • Movies, no picture, just sound on iPod

I have 5th Generation (30gb) iPod(2yrs old). I purchased 2 movies from the iTunes store. They show up and play in iTunes. I synced to my iPod, they both show up in the movies, but only the sound plays. On the screen no movie, just a little thumbnail of the movie and a progress bar across the bottom. This is the first time I have messed with movies and I have no idea how to correct this. Can anyone help me please? I wanted to watch these on my vacaton flight and I am leaving this Friday. I am very frustrated, I have been searching the support website for days to no avail. HELP!

On your iPod go to "Videos / Video Settings".
Then select "TV Out" and either set it to "off" or "ask".
Also, make sure you are accessing the video through the videos menu. If you have a video mixed in an audio playlist and you access it through that, you also won't be able to see the video.

  • Export to Quicktime/Movie to MPEG-4 Quality Much Worse with Snow Leopard?

I just tried exporting an HD movie from iMovie using Export to Quicktime - Movie to MPEG-4 for the first time since upgrading to Snow Leopard and besides taking forever to export, the quality at the same settings I've used before is terrible. There's terrible macroblocking even on relatively slow moving scenes. I've exported several movies using the same workflow previously to upgrading and the video was perfect.
I use mpeg-4, H.264 encoding, 4096 bit rate, 1920x1080 HD resolution, key frame every 15 frames. It's definitely a change in the encoder as just sharing to the Media Browser results in expected quality.
As a test, I tried upping the bitrate to 5120 but it didn't help with the macroblocking.
Anyone with similar problems and/or a solution?

I've actually started noticing more artifacts using the Share to Media Browser quicktime presets. The movies that are created don't seem to be as high quality as ones I've created before. It's almost like quicktime is missing keyframes or something and then artifacting. It's not consistent. I've got one mobile formatted movie where it artifacts badly in the first minute and then not at all afterwards. It's kind of frustrating.

  • Help: DV Windows Movie Maker - M4V for iPod 640x480 QuickTime Pro

    Good morning,
I have a few home videos on a 300GB hard drive, originally taken with my PAL DV camcorder, saved as AVI files using Windows Movie Maker when I was still using my Windows XP system for video editing, which I would like to convert to H.264 for long term storage on my Mac and view on my video capable iPod.
I am working on an Intel processor based computer with a registered version of QuickTime Pro and an up-to-date operating system.
Opening the files in QuickTime Player and inspecting them via the traditional Movie Info window reports the expected information:
    Format: DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 25
If I attempt to convert them to my target format of choice using a simple File -> Export -> Movie to iPod, I get, of course, an interlaced video which I promptly File -> Move to Trash.
If I convert them to an intermediate QuickTime format ("Move to QuickTime Movie", mov, Options -> Size -> Deinterlace source video) and then transcode them via the aforementioned "Move to iPod" method, I get good quality m4v files for the size, which play on my iPod, fully satisfying my quality requirements.
This intermediate step is time consuming though, and I am sure unnecessary, and I am looking for a more elegant way of accomplishing the above. I have limited time to investigate this personally so I am asking for a little help, which I am prepare to reward.
After having looked at the published iPod specifications, I have tried to File -> Export -> Movie to QuickTime Movie and manually applying encoding settings as follows:
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame rate: Current fps
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Enabled
Data Rate: Restrict to 1500 kbits/sec (inspired by the spec)
    Encoding: Best Quality (multi-pass)
    Optimised for: CD/DVD-ROM
Size: Dimensions 640 x 480 VGA (Deinterlace Source Video)
The resulting video file does not play back on my iPod and is inferior in quality to those I produce through the intermediate step described previously.
    Questions:
    1) how can I encode and deinterlace PAL DV videos for H.264 storage and iPod playback in 640x480 in one go?
    2) how do I get the best quality/size ratio I possibly can out of process 1) ?
    3) is there any way to batch process multiple files in a given folder?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
    best regards,
    Maroloccio
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for you post, Jon, but my questions remain largely unanswered.
Sorry, must have been half asleep when I attempted to respond.
After having looked at the published iPod specifications, I have tried to File -> Export -> Movie to QuickTime Movie and manually applying encoding settings as follows:
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame rate: Current fps
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Enabled
Data Rate: Restrict to 1500 kbits/sec (inspired by the spec)

This approach does not work because neither the "Movie to QT > H.264" nor the "Movie to MPEG-4" have access to the Baseline LC profile. Only Mac applications I know of that currently access this profile are the current QT Pro/iTunes, ViddyUp! (v1.7), and ffmpegX (v0.0.9x).
    1) I have downloaded Streamclip and tried to do as you suggested but the output video still doesn't play on my iPod. Again, I am looking for a tested workflow which would spare me the time it takes to get fully acquainted with the intricacies of H.264 profiles. I will certainly want to learn more about this in the near future, but for the time being I just need a solution to convert my media catalogue.
Sorry, was concentrating so much on the de-interlace issue that I completely forgot you wanted an iPod compatible target file. Only Mac application that seems to offer both de-interlace and direct Baseline LC profile is ffmpegX v0.0.9x. Have not used the de-interlace feature in this application, so I don't know how well it works. (In addition, its crop/scale option does not work to my satisfaction nor does it allow me to source multiple VOB files or a single VOB in excess of 4 GBs.) On the other hand, I do use de-interlace in MPEG streamclip on a regular basis and, while it is a bit "soft," have found it satisfactory. However, I create a QT DV/DVPRO intermediate file which is crop/scaled and make brightness, contrast, saturation and/or volume adjustments "on the fly" at the same time. Using this format is much quicker than encoding to H.264 twice.
    2) If I am to believe the published iPod specs, your suggestion would not work on one, at least not on the current generation.
Yes, really blew it there thinking all you wanted was an H.264/AAC file that did not need to be iPod compatible.
    3) Parallel processing results in thrashing of resources, I believe for these scenarios enqueueing works better.
Have not encountered any serious problems using this approach on the G5. Believe it does increase processing time to a small degree while "thrashing between resources," but comes in handy when converting a series of files while I go to a doctor's appointment (did 4 Doctor Who episodes on Tuesday this way), go shopping, pay bills, etc.

  • Exporting an 8-minute 1080p movie in MPEG-4 takes 4 hours?

    Hi,
I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong with me, my usage of Final Cut Express 4.0.1, or my MacBook. I'm new to Final Cut Express and to video editing.
I have a Canon camcorder which records AVCHD videos in 1080i. When importing video, I have to add a de-interlace filter on it so it doesn't look interlaced after export (which reduces the quality a bit, I found -- should I record in PF30 rather than 60 fps?). When rendering the video, it takes around 30 minutes for an 8-minute video. I know this is probably normal.
What I'm wondering is alright or not is the time it takes to export the processed 1080i video into an MPEG-4 1080p video. I'm exporting an 8-minute video right now and it's estimated to take 4 hours!
I have the impression iMovie may be able to export this kind of video faster. Is it normal for FCE to take so long to export such a short movie in MPEG-4?

So I should not deinterlace in FCE? I tried exporting a movie without deinterlace before and the exported movie looked interlaced.
The sequence I'm exporting right now is quite simple. There's only one 8-minute video on one video track, stereo sound on two audio tracks, a fade-in, a fade-out, and a 10-second lower third on a separate video track.
I am not too sure what I'll do with a full-resolution MPEG-4 file. The only way for me to display a 1080p movie would be on my MacBook or if I connect the video output to an HDTV. I may want to upload the file on YouTube, Facebook, or Vimeo, for example, but I doubt any video-sharing site supports 1080. Also, exporting it to a DVD will probably not require 1080 and I do not have a BluRay disc burner.
And now, by the time I'm done writing this reply, the export finished successfully. It didn't take four hours, but maybe around 1.5 hours. However, when looking at the video, the quality is terrible.
I must say I'm at a loss here. Is there anything I'm not doing properly?

Using mirroring with my apple tv and everthing shows up on the tv untill i try to watch a movie, i get the sound but no picture. I checked and both are on the same wifi?

I had this problem also. Several times in fact. And it has not been any relation with sw update (Apple TV). I managed to fix this on a strange way. I drop off WiFi in iMac and joined back. Right after thatI tried to adjust Airplay settings, but I didn't manage. Reason was that my iMac didn't found any Airplay devices (?). After about 2-3 minutes iMac recognized my Apple TV. And also audio "posting" to Apple TV started to work.
So restart your WiFi connection on your iMac or MacBook Pro - it may help.
Another hint is to use command: "sudo killall coreaudiod". More information about that: http://wwwx.cs.unc.edu/~cquammen/wp/2011/02/18/resetting-audio-on-mac-os-x/
I have not tried this, but maybe next time

  • QT7Pro - Movies convert with no sound when converting to iPod

I bought QT7Pro last night, wanting to convert movies (.avi and .mpg) I have on my computer. They play and have sound in QT just fine, but when I go to convert them to MPEG-4 or convert for iPod, the options claim to have no audio track and it winds up being a silent video. How can I convert my movies without losing the sound on them?

QuickTime Pro doesn't (can't) export audio from muxed files (MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash).
Use other software to export those formats to the iPod settings. A quick search through the iPod discussions pages (now over one million views) will give you some software ideas.

  • Trouble playing a complete .mov or .mpeg file

    Hello folks.
I'm having trouble playing some downloaded .mov and .mpeg files.
For example, I've downloaded a 50MB file and it only plays about the first 30 seconds of the file. However if I put the same file into VLC, I can see the whole movie (albeit slightly bumpy along the way) which may be a few minutes long.
It doesn't happen with all my files, just some specific ones (and always the same ones) Is there something embedded in the downloaded movie that let's QT only see the first bit?
I'd like to be able to view the whole file in QT 'cos I store them in iTunes for easy filing.
    Thanks in advance...!

I'm having trouble playing some downloaded .mov and .mpeg files.
Do the MOV file containers also contain MPEG-2 video? If so, then you may simply have a "timecode break" problem. This is very common with files downloaded from the Internet. QT is very particular and unforgiving in this regard. VLC is not. Normally I would recommend using an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to "fix timecode breaks." Unfortunately, I cannot remember if fixing the timecode break and then using the "Save As..." option changes the file in other ways. (Believe it may change the "Open with" setting which you can easily fix afterwards.) Would have liked to check on this before posting but my copy of the application will be busy for another 5 or 6 hours doing conversions.

Hello, I need help finding a movie that I downloaded, can anyone help me with this?

If you downloaded it to your iTunes library it will be in the Movies folder.  If you downloaded it to an iOS device you will find it in the Videos app.  This explains how to redownload previously purchased videos (available in some locations as long as the studio permits it): http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12283.
