Help!  Printer no longer working in 10.5.8, but will in 10.4.11

Ok.  I'm presently running on a G4 PowerMac, 933Mhz "Quicksilver" with 10.5.8.  Had no problems with my archaic Lexmark X73 all-in-one up until about a week or two ago.  Could print, copy and scan to my little heart's content.  Now, I can't print, scan, or do anything.  The Print Setup Utility, when clicked, will bring up my printer list... give me the spinning beach ball of doom, then crash.  Trying to open the printer utility to align heads, install ink cartridges, etc, does absolutely nothing now.  I click, the icon pops up, bounces, then disappears.  I've reloaded the drivers several times, tried my backup/mirror to my primary drive... no luck.  Only by going way back into the stacks and digging up my 20GB "life raft" drive that's still configured to 10.4.11, was I able to do anything.
Guess my question to the horde is, what did I do, and how do I fix whatever it was that I did?  Is there something in 10.5.8 that I need to install/reinstall, or am I basically hosed now?

May be something to try on these links.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, my Canon MP980 printer no longer works. I've tried deleting the printer and adding it again. I've downloaded the driver software from Canon. My Mac dropbox tells me "the selected printer software is available from Apple", but when I click to download it, the process ends with my mac saying the software is not currently available from the software update server.

Open Finder and click on Go > Go to Folder. Then type
    /Library/Printers/Canon
and press Enter. This will show the BJPrinter and iJScanner folders. You could try moving or trashing this folder and then installing the driver that you downloaded from Canon again.

Since installing Snow Leopard, my LaserJet printer no longer works.  Spent 5 hours on the phone to Apple Support without any satisfaction.  Any suggestions?  I'm desperate.......

Go to the HP web site and download the latest drivers for your OfficeJet.

  • Just upgraded to Mavericks and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks?

Just upgraded my 2009 iMac (3.06 Ghz, core 2 duo $GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) to Mavericks OSX 10.9.5 and my HP6100 printer no longer works, when I try to reload the software it says PowerPC apps no longer supported.  Printer says the software was improperly installed. Is there a way to use my HP6100 Printer with Mavericks or do I need to go back to Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard?

It's not clear whether your printer is included in the Apple list - there is an Officejet 6100 and a couple of other types. Go to the page linked to above and use the browser search for 6100.
I'm afraid HP are notorious for not supporting older printers - I had the same problem. Probably they hope you will buy another printer (I did, but it was a Canon). I did look on HP's site and couldn't see a driver - you could give it a try (make sure you have the exactly correct printer name):
    http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support-search.html?tab=1#/qryterm=HP6100&search_search type=s-002
Alternatively ou could try Gutenprint (open source software):
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
I found it would indeed drive the printer, but the colour dithering wasn't very satisfactory and the duplex printing bolt-on wouldn't work. However as Gutenprint is free it's worth trying to see if it's any good for you.

  • All help menus no longer work after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks on my iMac all help menus no longer work. You still get the drop down box which contains the search window and other choices, but if you try clicking on them the screen just flashes or you might get a box that says " safari help is not available". It does this system wide, doesn't matter what application your in. My internet works fine but for some reason in Mavericks the help menus are not accessing this information. Anyone else have this problem? Or an answer?
    Thank you!

Finally, a quick restart of the mac and all help menus are working again.

  • I used to able to access and listen to my itunes library from my ipad using the remote app but this no longer works.  I am connected but sound thru ipad.  Is this because of they want us to use itunes match

I used to able to access and listen to my itunes library on my ipad  using the remote app but this no longer works.  I am connected but sound thru ipad- just controls my library on iMac.  Is this because of they want us to use itunes match

That has nothing to do with iTunes match. The Remote app on iPad can control the computer's iTunes but not play content from iTunes on your iPad.
To play for example iTunes imusic on iPad
You need to have Home Sharing On.
Check Settings > Music > Home Sharing (key in your Apple ID & password here, must be the same on computer's iTunes)
Start iPad's Music app, tap the ... More (bottom right), tap Shared.
Choose your iTunes' library and have fun.

i can listen to music but my silent switch wont work my phone wont vibrate but will ring, and the volume buttons wont work the speaker will work asweell

Have you done a restore of the phone to see if that fixed the problem with the speaker? If that doesnt help then you probably damaged something inside the phone when you dropped it.
If you're annoyed by the problem, you can always get a replacement phone
    Out-of-warranty* cost:

  • My microphone won't work when in Speaker mode, but will when in regular mode. What is up with that?

My iPhone's microphone will not work in the Speaker mode, but will when in Regular mode. The microphone works even when in bluetooth mode. This was sudden and no updates have been made recently, but it is up to date with the software.

I took it to the apple store and it was determined to be a mechanical problem. Since I had apple care, they replaced the phone.

  • New hub from BT now printer no longer works with MBP OSX 10.6.8

Laptop no longer finds printer wirelessly. Have downloaded drivers and firmware updates from HP.com and also have downloaded drivers from apple for snow leopard. Now says drivers incompatible with OS. Downloaded drivers from Apple support and nothing is happening. Worked fine till BT sent a new hub (their latest one) now nothing is happening at all. Don't know if I have to connect manually to the hub etc. The printer is now showing on WiFi as having it's own wireless network that I am unable to join either.

    Hi @LjetPro100,
I read your post and see that since getting the new hub, you aren't able to setup the printer over the wireless network.
I will certainly do my best to help you.
Make sure Safari is set as the default browser. Sometime the Embedded Web Server won't open or will error out, if it isn't. Open Safari, across the top select the Safari menu, select Preferences, General, set as default.
Restore printer defaults first to remove any old network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
Print a configuration page to make sure the old network settings are cleared. Printing a Configuration Page.
Then run the HTML again from the Print and Scan window after opening the Print Que. (You may need to delete and add the printer again into the Printers and Scanners to be able to open the HTML again)
If you are still having issues getting a valid IP address, check the following:
The printer is only capable of sending/receiving in the 2.4Ghz band.
If it is set to 5 GHZ network you may need to change to 2.4 GHZ. (rename the 5ghz or shut it off)
The WPA key setting needs to be on AES to work correctly not TKIP.
Multi casting needs to be turned on.
Firewall on router has to have open ports for printer.
If you have Mac Filtering you need to give printer hardware address from configuration page.
You might need to contact your router company for further assistance to check those settings.
If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • My XP printer no longer works with snow leopard over the network

My XP networked printer (Samsung 4200) no longer works with snow leopard after Mac update.  Printer hooked up to XP and can access it through network.
When I print it requests that I to authenticate the printer with a user name and password but it's not password protected. I don't have a password, but I tried all the usuals anyways.
It worked fine a couple days ago, and I've tried everything since.  I've reset my printers, turned off both computers.  Plugged the printer directly into the Mac - didn't work at first but downloaded a new driver Splix - 2 (Samsung doesn't make an OS X driver for this printer) and got it working.  Reinstalled Bonjour on the PC, which can't even see a printer now.  Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    THanks in advance.

Connecting from a Mac to Windows is password protected. If you tried to connect to a shared folder on Windows you would also be prompted to enter your Windows credentials. So when you do print next time, enter your Windows user details and password. If XP has no password then set one - it is bad practise to have a Windows computer without a password. And updates to Mac OS X expect you to have one set in the Windows computer.
If for some reason you don't want to set a password in XP then enable the Guest account and you can use this on the Mac when you get the prompt (either select Guest or type it in).

  • Just updated software and now epson printer no longer works

I'm frustrated.  I updated software ( as recommended by apple) and now my epson printer no longer is working. I've read through some threads about throwing the extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBEthernetHost  away... and that is not working for me.  I cannot print. I have also followed the info on the apple site about deleting the printer and then readding it, all to no avail.  please help. thankyou.

Without knowing anything about the printer, version of OS X installed, or how the printer is connected it is difficult to help you out. When posting please post specifics.

  • Printer no longer working after wireless network reset

OfficeJet Pro 8500A, MacBook Pro, running Mavericks.
Since 3 days ago, when we re-added a password and locked our wireless router (ATT modem, UVerse), our printer is "off-line"   Print jobs queue up, but do not print.  When I go in and check it says "printer off-line."  Or in the print queue, it is something like "looking for printer."
It worked briefly when we found a cord and plugged it in to the laptop, but will not work wirelessly, which it was doing before.    No changes except to re-do password for the network.
I have the manual and have turned everything off, then back on in the order recommened (router, then printer, then laptop).  Still off-line.   Can someone please help?   Thank you!
    This question was solved.

    Hello @LindaGrace,
Welcome tot he HP Support Forums!
I understand that since re-adding a password to your wireless router your HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer is not communicating wirelessly with your Mac OS X 10.9 computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this wireless communication issue.
Now, making a change to your network, such as a adding a password or altering a password, results in having to reconfigure your printer on the wireless network. At this point your printer is being 'blocked' access to your wireless network due to the change that you made. To correct this issue you simply rerun the wireless setup for your printer to 'tell' the printer the network name and password. Once the wireless setup is run successfully everything will continue working for you as per normal.
To run the Wireless Setup Wizard on your printer please follow the steps below.
On the printer touch screen, touch the Right Arrow () to display the second navigation screen.
Touch Network () to open the Network Menu screen.
    Touch Wireless.
Touch Wireless Setup Wizard, and then touch Continue.
Wait while the printer searches for routers that are within range. The Select Network (SSID) menu displays.
Scroll down the list of network names until you find the name of your network.
Touch the name of your network.
If prompted, enter the WEP or WPA key. This is the password for your wireless. The password is case sensitive.
Wait for the printer to connect to the network
    - Source
Once your printer is connected to your network again, please try to print. If printing still fails you may need to re-add the printer to your Mac because of the printers new network connection. Please follow the steps below to add the printer back to the Mac.
    1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
    2. Click Print & Scan, and then check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list.
    3. If your printer is already listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm communication with the Mac. Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (), and then delete the printer
    4. Click the plus sign (), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer
    5. Click Add to add the printer to the list.
Now that the printer is successfully configured on your network and added to the Mac please try wirelessly printing again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck!

  • Printing No Longer Working After Recent Upgrade

My printing suddenly stopped working after the latest upgrade (which upgraded the kernel from 2.6.15.2 to 2.6.15.4).
I discovered that arch is no longer auto-loading the parport_pc module.  This is strange.  If I run "hwdetect --show-modules", parport_pc is shown.
I do have MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes" in my rc.conf file.
The quick fix is to add "parport_pc" to the list of MODULES in rc.conf.
    Are others having this problem?
    Rob

I just read your post.  I am sorry I could not join irc.  I was actually at work.  It is very hard for me to use irc at work.  Firewalls make life difficult!
In any event, I think I solved the problem.
    Please see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=18747
    Here is the complete post:
In my /etc/modprobe.conf file, there was the folloiwng line:
    # Load lp support with parport_pc
    install parport_pc modprobe -i parport_pc ; modprobe lp ; true
I believe that this line was in the original /etc/modprobe.conf file that came with arch 0.7. I don't remember ever adding it.
I commented out this line and I removed "parport_pc" from the list of MODULES to be loaded in /etc/rc.conf.
I rebooted and it worked. The modules lp, parport and parport_pc were all autoloaded at boot-up.
I should also note that right after the arch upgrade, I was experiencing CUPS daemon failure once and awhile at boot up. Somtimes cupsd loaded and sometimes it failed at boot up. Now it seems that cupsd loads reliably at every bootup. Problem solved!
The following are the remaining lines in my /etc/modprobe.conf:
    # Load ppp-generic with modem drivers
    install Intel536 modprobe -i Intel536 ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
    install Intel537 modprobe -i Intel537 ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
install ltmodem modprobe -i ltmodem ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
install ltserial modprobe -i ltserial ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
install slamr modprobe -i slamr ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
install slusb modprobe -i slusb ; modprobe ppp-generic ; true
    # OSS Compatibility
    #install snd-pcm modprobe -i snd-pcm ; modprobe snd-pcm-oss ; true
    #install snd-seq modprobe -i snd-seq ; modprobe snd-seq-oss ; true
    # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    # --- ALSACONF version 1.0.10 ---
    alias snd-card-0 snd-opl3sa2
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-opl3sa2
    options snd-opl3sa2 fm_port=-1 midi_port=-1 port=0x538 wss_port=0x530
    options isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5
    # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
The modem driver lines came with the original /etc/modprobe.conf file in arch 0.7.
Should I also comment them all out?
Perhaps I should only have the lines for my old ISA sound card in the /etc/modprobe.conf file. Please let me know.
Has there been a change in the kernel or udev which makes it neccesary to make all these changes in the /etc/modprobe.conf file?
    Rob
