HELP! Problem with KERNEL PANICS!
Hi everyone!
I have a serious problem with kernel panics - it doesn't seem to be connected with a certain type of program, but seems to be completely random. I have reinstalled my OS X and updated it, but the kernel panics just keep on coming and if possible it actually seemed to make matters worse! Now it doesn't always show the bar at the top of the screen when I turn it on, and sometimes programs like iTunes and Safari, just won't work until I restart the mac. I've also done a harware test - no faults detected. I had an idea that it might be AutoCad causing it, as it started sometime after I installed it - it was also the first program I reinstalled after OS X reinstallation - but I haven't used the AutoCad a whole lot and the panics happen way more often.
I am completely at a loss now as I'm not exactly a computer expert. If anyone can deduce something from my most recent panic log which could help me find out what's causing all this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!
My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Cheers.I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

Problem with kernel panic message - Cannot boot from disk or usb
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been trying to tackle for the last few days. I have a 24" iMac 2.33 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 gigs of RAM. A couple of days ago my computer crashed, and when I tried to boot up again I got the infamous grey screen kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer..."). What's worse is that I get the same message when I try booting from my external drive and the installation disk itself.
I've basically planned on formatting since it's been a while anyway, but since I can't boot from my external drive or the installation disk that came with my computer these are not options at the moment. I can only get into the computer via safe mode. I've used disk utility to verify the disk, and it comes up with no errors. Anyways, I'd really appreciate if anyone had any advice on this. I've scoured the internet for advice about kernel panic messages, and they all suggest booting from disk or external drive etc., which is not a possibility for me right now.
ThanksIf you get a panic when trying to boot from the installation disc, and the disc is not scratched or dirty, then you have a hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
Problems with kernel panics when sleeping since 10.6.8
Hi folks,
I installed 10.6.8 the day it was issued, and since then have had some very odd problems with sleeping my Mac Pro. Intermittently, it goes into a half-sleep state when I request sleep mode; the fans still spin, but the sleep light pulses. It refuses to wake up, requiring a hard reset. The console logs show:
Sleep: Drivers Failure Panic
The specific panic is:
panic(cpu X caller 0xffffff80002251fb): "TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU bitmap: 0x101, NMIPI acks: orig: 0x0, now: 0x0"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.15.3/osfmk/x86_64/pmap.c:2741
where cpu X varies between any one of the 6 cores.
So far, I've tried
Resetting the PRAM and SMC
Disabling a raft of sleep related options (Wake on Bluetooth, etc)
Reinstalling the 10.6.8 update via the Combo updater
Repairing disk permissions
Reinstalling from the factory DVD and re-running the combo updater
And no doubt other things I've forgotten. The only thing that seems to fix it is to not install 10.6.8; when I reinstalled 10.6.4 (the factory OS), it slept and woke fine 10 times. As soon as the combo update was installed, it started sleep crashing again after 4-5 attempts.
I'm assuming this is some rogue driver bug introduced in the .8 release, but I've not seen anyone else suffering the problem. I would roll back onto .7, but will obviously need .8 to install Lion when it arrives.
Does anyone have any suggestions that I've missed, or has anyone else seen this problem?
Thanks,
adamwWoops, sorry - typo. I meant 5870 (Apple provided). As far as I know, I'm not running any 3rd party drivers. The only non-Apple kernel extensions loaded are Parallels, which I've unloaded (and the problem persisted).
I should also mention, the Apple Hardware Test passes the machine.
I'll check out those two forums and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the advice!
Edit: The whole panic log is...

Problems with kernel panic????
sometimes when im on the net.. the computer will freeze and a grey square appears telling me to restart my comptuer... people tell me its a kernel panic... but what is a kernel panic???? and How do i fix this problem??? thanks
Hi ozzman,
A kernel panic can be caused by an "illegal" software instruction or faulty hardware.
Resolving Kernel Panics by Dr. Smoke may help. Be sure to follow the steps outlined to properly troubleshoot the problem. If you skip around you may not find it.

Having Problems with Kernel Panics and an External Hard Drive
I've been having Kernel Panics for a month now and have yet to resolve the issue. I know about Dr. Smokes guide to resolving them, but I'm working on a time-sensitive editing project in Final Cut Pro and therefore have not had time to fix my computer.
I am using an OWC external hard drive for the project, and today when I had a kernel panic and I rebooted my computer as I normally do. But, this time, my external hard drive icon was not on my desktop, and a message popped up that said, "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." Is there anyway to remedy this so that my computer reads my hard drive?Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair your ext. hard drive as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption?
Cheers!

Experts, help me with kernel panics.... PLEASE
Been having KPs randomly recently. This one detailed below was when running Firefox and perhaps itunes (had quit mail since opening, not sure if I quit itunes). This was after boot up and no other programs had been opened. I'm hoping someone here can identify what might be causing this issue for the logs. (I have more logs I can post if needed)
A bit of background:
Purchased MBP early 08, never had a problem, then when i finally decided to up the RAM from 2gig to 4gig, purchased from crucial, the install caused my first K.P. At the time I thought it may be due to using firefox as if I did not use the net, all programs seemed to work for hours, but FF would shut it down within minutes.
I tried experimenting with different configs of RAM, each 2gig stick, total of 3gig using one original and one new and no issues. The only time i had K.P. was with 4gig.
I gave up and went back to 2gig. Put the new sticks in a drawer and moved on.
Recently I upgraded to Lion and thought I would give it another try. So far the system seems to be working fine except for the most part. It will last for an extended period with many programs operating, sometimes over days before a KP will strike.
After the first K.P. recently I looked in to what I could do to check RAM and ended up using memtest with no issues discovered, so the sticks seem not to be the cause.
This is a list of some of the things I was doing at the time of the KPs since upgrade to lion:
using google maps and trying to zoom in to street view.
trying to add an airport express to my network whilst playing iTunes
watching a flash video on a news website, also with itunes playing
loading a stock chart.
It’s so frustrating because it seems to be a different thing each time.

After one of the K.P. when I powered back up, the system did not go to the log in screen, and instead of the start up sound, there was 3 short burst tones repeated after a few second gap like a warning alarm. Never seen that before.Ok, so I'm back.
After removing the logitec software the system seems to run ok so long as I only put the MBP to sleep. If I shut it down, then on rebooting I will get another KP after not too long. Difference this time however is that when I reboot, I get the chime, then during the white screen I get another KP before I even get to the log in. This has occured 3 times since removing the LCC software.
Below is the log I got after rebooting again and logging in the second time on this occasion. I note there is no unloaded kext this time, only loaded. the previous two times, I did not record details, however I do recall seeing the com.apple.filesystems (though not sure of the ntfs component but it was prabably the same thing).
Is this likely to be the problem now? I am basing that on the assumption it is the first on the list meaning the last loaded (if it follows the same theory as previously posted KP report logs)

Having problems with Kernel Panic screen on iMac 17" 1.83
I have this iMac that was running fine the we had a power surge and the computer started crashing with the Grey Screen with the darker block in the center that said I need to restart the computer. Finally it would not even come up with out crashing. I removed the hard drive to use on my Mac Pro to retrieve the files and it took forever but I finally go them. Then no matter what I could not reformat the hard-drive even though SMART said it was okay. So I replaced the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and all the updates. Everything ran fine for a day then started then it started crashing again. i finally erased the harddrive from my mac pro by firewire and the iMac was in transfer mode. But now I can not get Leopard to install from the DVD. It shows the errors below:

I don't know about your model but some Macs come with an Apple Hardware Test disc for that kind of thing. There's also RAM testing utilities such as Memtest and Ramber. From reading I get the impression testing for bad RAM can be finicky and requires long runs. Sometimes it is easiest by removing chips and seeing how things run in different configurations.

Good job on getting it all working again. -
I am writting to ask for help with my old version MacBook Pro early 2008 with Kernel Panic 9C2028 10.5.2 Darwin 9.2.1. Will any body outthere heppe me get out this freezes up panic kernel Darwin 9.2.1.
Thanks YouLooks like a RAM failure or maybe another hardware failure.
Can you take out the battery and with the charger connected start up? Same failure?
Have you tried the SMC reset and PRAM reset? do both twice. -
Looking for some advice dealing with Kernel Panics
Hi there! I'm looking for some help regarding constant kernel panics I've been getting on my machine. It has been happening pretty regularly for the last month or so, occuring sometimes three times in one day and other times none. I've been looking to see what might cause the issue and have thus far come up emptyhanded. I can't think of anything I've modified recently that would be causing the issue. I performed a hardware test using AHT and no errors were found. I've included both the most recent report from the panic as well as the EtreCheck report. Any and all advice is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.
Possible other causes are the software that installed these:
com.splashtop.driver.SRXFrameBufferConnector 1.5
com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.7
com.splashtop.driver.SRXDisplayCard 1.5
com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.7
Now they may be causing panics because the try to use acceleration in the GPU which leads to the panics. You are unlucky to have a particular model that has a real problem with this. -
MBP Mid2010 with kernel panics, passed video tests
I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro that I tried to upgrade to OSX 10.8 in the fall of 2012, but the system was very unstable with kernel panics. I took it to the Apple store and they couldn't find anything wrong, so I reverted back to 10.6. I attempted again to upgrade to 10.8 in Feb and this time the install proved stable. Things ran great until 10.8.4 was pushed and the system has been unstable since. I heard of the issue with the graphics switching and took it to an Apple store again to have it tested, but the machine passed the video test. It was recommended that I try to do a clean install of the OS and see if a particular piece of software was causing the issue. I complied and completely wiped the drive and installed 10.8.4 fresh, but I had kernel panics within a few minutes after the system was installed. I have had over 80 KP in the last month and have no idea what direction to go. I have run Rember memory scan, which returned no issues with the memory. Any help would be appreciated.

<Edited By Host>That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

MBP won't re-install Tiger - shuts withs Kernel panic
Hello everybody! My Problem started some days ago: My MBP started shutting down with Kernel-panics while closing iPhoto. A week ago it wouldn't even start up. Since then it displays the "Restart your Computer"-message approximately 10 seconds after starting the machine. I tried re-installing the OS using the Original-Dvds. The same Problem appears some seconds later while trying to boot from the DVD. So I can't even try to re-install, because I don't even see an Install-Screen. The Book works fine under both Windows through Bootcamp and KuBUNTU via Live-CD.
Anyone an idea what do to??
Thanks in advance
MartinIt sounds to me like a hardware problem, perhaps in firmware that is used by MacOS but not by Windows. If you had been able to boot the installer disc, I would have suggested running the hardware test that you can find in its menus before you start installing.
You might try zapping the PRAM, and perhaps removing and re-inserting your RAM. There are instructions for both these operations on the Apple support web site. But I would not be surprised if you are forced to bring your MBP in to a service depot. -
Installing OEL on pavilion dv7 4054CA failing with kernel panic
I am trying to install OEL 4.8 (5.5 gives errors too but not as details as 4.8 )on pavilion dv7 4054CA I7 4-core/8 thread laptop but the installation terminates shortly with kernel panic. I gathered the below errors from the screen:
kernel panic - not syncing
drivers/acpi/ec.c:162
spin_is_locked on unintiialized spinlock
acpi-0352
acpi-1134
acpi-0691 : *** Error: acpi_ev_ype_dispatch
It looks like a CPU issue. My laptop is brand new and works fine and I want to install Linux on it.
So any one can help on this?
Thanks.Oracle Linux, like all Linux for Enterprise systems, was developed for server hardware and will most likely have trouble to fully support laptops or desktop PC systems. Even if you get the system installed, you may run into trouble with proper support for laptop power management, touchpad, video and wireless support.
A good alternative to run Oracle Linux, or Enterprise Linux on a Laptop is Oracle Virtualbox. It allows you to install multiple common operating systems without the need to repartition your harddrive or jeopardize your primary operating system. Virtualbox is free. More info can be found here http://www.virtualbox.org. If you would like to use Linux as your primary OS or dual-boot, better consider a desktop Linux system like Fedora, Ubuntu or SUSE office desktop - you will be much happier with it. Please note that Oracle Express will easily install and support desktop Linux, but Oracle RDBMS does only support Enterprise Linux versions and will require special attention to get installed on Linux desktops.
In order to start OEL from your computer and work-around the issue you are experiencing, you might try to specify boot parameters, such as acpi=ht or acpi=off

PowerMac G4 keeps crashing with kernel panics
For the past few weeks my PowerMac G4 has been crashing repeatedly with kernel panics. I've taken in to the Genius Bar three times to get it looked at, but it still keeps crashing.
I've used Disk Warrior multiple times to repair the hard drive. I've archived and reinstalled the OS. I've reinstalled the entire Adobe Creative Suite CS3. I don't know what else to do.
It's crashed twice this morning already. Can anyone tell what the source of this chaos is from the panic log?

i tried Diskwarrior too, but that doesnt resolve it. the techie at alsoft.com (diskwarrior) says its was a hardware problem. run a ram test like apple hardware test to chk ram. I do not have apple hardware test. instead there is a program called 'Memtest' which is obtained thru [email protected] for only a small charge. you then are able to download it.
I ran the memtest and found that One of my mem strips is defective. Memtest doesn't tell which one is bad, so you still have to trial and error by swapping strips in and out 7 rerun the test. I did find the defective strip finally. i then replaced it with a new 1 GB ddr pc2700strip. I ran the test again and no failure or flaws. Running the memtest a few times is time consuming but it works!!! I've had no more Kernal Panics!!! everything else runs better too. Version 4.22 is current but they may come out with updates that may actually identify the bad strip in memory.
Good luck on this matter.
