**HELP. ? (question mark/exclamation button does n...

Just purchased a E71. Had it for 6 days now and I must say that this phone is Great! Was able to config all sorts of features and settings on it (wifi, my email, GPRS, google maps..etc) and the phone works like a charm. BUT i have a MAJOR issue with the !/? key which is on the bottom right corner of the qwerty keyboard, right next to the ctrl/chr key. Although each time i press the key I hear a beep noise (which means that the key is pressed) it does not type the corresponding characters on the screen (! or ?). To be more specific I tried pressing the key by it self or with a combination of the shift key or function key and the result is the same, which is, I do NOT get any input on the screen, except from a strange symbol if I hold down the shift key and then the (!/?) key which gives me a single code input. The only way for me to input these two characters (! or ?) is by using rhe Ctrl/chr key.
Is there something wrong with my phone, or is there something that I am missing here??
Please note that I also tried disabling the predictive text, but had no luck.

Hi Nick
I was wondering whether you solved this problem, as I am facing a similar problem myself.  Pressing the !/? key once produces no result, whereas a second press produces the character ' (Greek intonantion).
Any other contributors in solving this issue are greatly appreciated.

  • Project Validaation error, no question marks/exclamation point, whats wrong

I've read the forum recommendations on addressing this error to no avail. I cant burn. I was prompted for project validation error. Checked DVD map but no question marks/exclamation points. I checked all chapter markers on iMovie and they were all correct. Everything on DVD map looks correct. Tried people's suggestion of saving as Disc Image or even as Video-TS but got the same error message on project validation. I've tried and retried for several hrs already but cant figure out what could be wrong.
I am using iMovie HD and iDVD 08. Dragged movie into iDVD project. Have done similar projects before without problem.
Help pls. This is so frustrating after working many hours on iDVD project.

Yes filled all the image drop zones, no extra buttons, previewed everything in iDVD map and all ok. Used a 6.0 theme in one menu, and a 5.0 or old theme in a submenu. Have done that too before without any problem.
How can I check if there is an extra unused "holder"? there are no blank buttons that I see.
    thanks

  • My computer is will not boot up. INstead its making a clicking sound and in the middle of screen picture of a file with a question mark. What does that mean?

Does anyone know what's wrong with it? not booting up. instead of it a picture of a file appears with a question mark on it in the middle of screen?

Sounds like abad hard drive. The clicking sound is coming from the HD. The folder with the question mark means that your computer can't find the statrup disk or the hard drive.
Boot your computer using the install disc and check if Disk Utility can recognize your HD. If not, then it needs HD replacement. If you have AppleCare or within the 1 year warranty, then replacement should be free from Apple. Check the nearest Apple Store in your area.

How old is this Mac? It is also possible that the hard drive has failed. If nothing works, take it to the  Retail Store

  • Mac does not start and a cartel with a question mark appears. what does it means?

it's the second time it happens. I start Mac and a folder with a question mark appears, then I close and restart and Mac opens normally. What's going wrong? Thank you for any help

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The question mark appears when your Mac can't find a bootable volume to start from, and it may indicate that your hard drive is failing.
Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify the disk. If it finds a problem, you will have to repair the disk, starting your Mac from the Snow Leopard DVD

  • What does the folder with a question mark mean?

When I power on my black Macbook a white screen appears with a folder with a question mark flashing. what does the folder with a question mark mean? I just replaced the hard drive. When I put the install disc in the cd drive makes a very loud whirring noise then eventually the disc pops back out. Any ideas?

    You will need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • TS2094 After resetting the pram, the screen only shows a folder with a question mark inside.  What does this mean?

I followed the initial steps in this post and reset pram.  After restarting, the screen just shows a folder with a question mark.  What does this mean?

Thanks Niel, I tried using Option and nothing happened so I next tried inserting the Leopard disc and rebooting while holding C.  Nothing happened until the disc was ejected and then the folder with question mark reappeared.  I inserted the disc again and at this point and it booted OSX.  I tried to acess disc utility to repair but my harddrive wasn't listed, only the CD drive and the OS disc.  Does this mean I'm lost everything?

  • Netboot will not working, getting globe, then flashing folder with question mark.

I just created a netboot image which went off without any problems.  I copied the two .nbi folders to my NetBootSP0 folder, and enabled them within netboot.  My OS X server which is my netboot server and dhcp server.  When I boot using N or Option N, I get the flashing globe for several seconds, the request goes through to the server and gets ACK {SELECT} however a few more seconds after, I get the flashing folder and question mark before it does a normal boot.  I have read the other posts about DHCP and Subnets.  My server and and clients are all 255.255.0.0.  Any suggestions would be very helpful as I need this to work for several buildings.

    This might work for some:
I had the same problem of the netboot image not mounting/opening, spinning globe then booting back to the Mac HD on the client and it was only when I remembered that we had manually experimented with jumbo frame rates and the MTU settings for our 32TB RAID in the Hardware settings for Ethernet ports on our servers. I turned the settings back to "Automatic" and 1000baseT on, then the whole NetInstall and Neboot was working perfectly again.

  • I need to reinstall lion OS on my MAC mini. I have the 'question mark folder'.

It is a mid 2011 mac mini. It boots to the 'question mark folder'. I installed lion server over my lion OS. After trying to remove the server app unsuccessfully, I id a command-r boot and erased the Macintosh HD where my OS was wiht the intention to reinstall. THe on-screen instruction I thought said I had to reboot after to use the recovery HD so I di. Now when it boots, it jsut goes to the 'question mark folder' and does not load. I only have the bluetooth keyboard so will the mini recognize the command-r on boot? It doesnt appear to.
    Thansk for any input,
    Ken

Had the same problem w/ a Mac mini server. The only thing that helped was not the timing, but a disconnection of all cables from the machines: power, keyboard, etc., and a wait of one minute which according to Apple support - resets some config on the machine. After I did that, Command R worked just fine.
BTW, According to Apple, you have to hold Commmand R just after you hear the chime, and keep holding it until you see the recovery utility. Another alternative can be holding Command Option R for network recovery.

  • Blinking question mark when Mac Book turns on

When my daughter turns on her Mac Book the screen shows a blinking picture of a folder with a question mark. What does this mean and how can I fix it? My local Genius Bar doesn't have an opening until next week. Thank you.

It means that critical system files are corrupted or missing - no valid operating system was found. Typically this means you must reinstall OS X. It could in rare cases simply be due to directory corruption that may be repaired. So first you might do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    In most cases reinstalling OS X will be necessary. You may be able to do the following;
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • HT4718 What do I do if I get a folder with a question mark?

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro and just installed a brand new SSD hard drive after my original HD crashed.  According to this document and others that I found online, I thought I could boot up while pressing Command+R and follow instructions to install Mountain Lion, which I had purchased before and was on my old HD.  However, almost a dozen times I have tried following those instructions (including trying to hold down just the option key) but all I get is a flashing folder with a question mark icon.
Does anyone know why?  Am I actually supposed to boot from the disk that came with my computer?  If so, won't it install the old OS, or am I not understanding something?  Or am I supposed to boot from Time Machine?
I'm pretty sure from what I've read that I can't boot from my old HD because it died, but is there something I'm missing?
Thanks for any help you can give.

If your computer originally shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier and you swapped the drive out, you need to use its original disks; there won't be a recovery partition on the new one.
If your computer originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, pressing those keys will load the recovery partition from Apple's website.

  • Blinking folder with questions mark

A teacher just brought me a MacBook, and upon start-up there is a blinking folder with a questions mark.  What does that mean, and how can I fix it?
I appreciate anyone's knowledge and help.

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

  • Safari displaying question marks on images

    Hey guys,
i ran into a problem with my RSS Reader /GoogleReader/. As a fan of photography i have several photographers blogs in my RSS reader. In past two weeks noticed, that a lot of posts with single pictures keeps showing me just question marks and Safari does not load the picture. This happens on my PC where Safari is instaled.
Now the strange thing is, this happens on my iPhone aswel.
But the strangest thing is, home on my MacBook everything works just fine.
So-im not really figuring out where is ths problem. Is it my stupid PC, is it the iPhone, the Safari, the www? is there some way i could fix this? Is it matter of some preferences? I thought about some parrental issues, as some of the pictures contain nudity or are more or less provocative, but there are some architectural feeds that have the same problem.
Please, is there some way of having this fixed?
    Thank you
PS: here is an adress for you to judge http://www.terrysdiary.com/post/3362208209/photographers-outside-of-the-calvin-k lein-show
    i see just question marks

If you move, rename or delete the photos outside of the Organizer, you will get the question mark. So, don't do that any more. If you want to get rid of the question marks, you need to reconnect the photos, via File->Reconnect, or follow these instructions: http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Quickly_reconnecting_large

  • Question Mark/Folder on startup

I have an Imac G3 with 10.3.9 installed. I've used it occasionally over the last year or so but have recently bought a Mac Book Air and was hoping to connect it to the internet via ethernet to transfer all my music - but this time when I turned it on I just got a grey screen with a small folder and a flashing question mark.
After doing some research I've tried to use the start up disks which seems to work initially but then when it gets to the point where you have to select a location there are no possible options to select. I can't start in safe mode or using Command-S - nothing happens. When I start holding the option key I get a blue screen that has one arrow looping round and one arrow pointint to the right but neither does anything when I click on it.
I'm resigned to the fact that the computer is dead but is there any way to rescue all my music (I had previously tried to hook it up to various cloud options but none were compatible with 10.3.9 so it isn't backed up anywhere)? I was going to try chatting to someone in Apple support but the system doesn't recognise the serial number on the bottom of my machine so it won't let me in to talk to anyone or book a call.
    Thanks!

Your best move would be to pull the hd out of the machine.  An attach to an adapter & see if you can read the data off the drive.  The machine is 15 to 11 years old. I've seen reports that hd's only last three to five years on the average.
Extract the harddrive.  Attach the 'bare' harddrive to the adapter. Attach the adapter to a Mac.  Try reading the data. Run a household fan on the harddrive.

  • HT1379 A flashing question mark appears when I re/start my MacBook Air 2013. At first, I pressed Power & Option button and it recovered from Internet. Then, four options appeared but none of them are helpful. Could u please help me to solve it asap?

    Hello,
A flashing question mark appears when I re/start my MacBook Air 2013. Then, I pressed POWER & OPTOIN buttons and internet options appeared for internet recovery. After internet recovery, the OS X utilities appears with four options (Restore from Time machine, Reinstall OS X, Get help online and Disk utility). But none of them seemed helpful. On the last option Disk utility, the icon created only with 33KB and other disk 1 Mac Os X Base system. On First Aid, the icon Repair disk is disabled. So I could not click on repair disk. Could you please suggest me how to solve this problem asap? Thank you so much for your help in advance!

    You can try the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
