[help] ram usage

Sorry for my horrible english.
Anyway, today i try safary 3.1 on Xp sp2 pro. With freemeter and task manager, i see a strange behaviour for a web browser.
The Ram utilization growth if i visit many web pages.
150mb
200mb
300mb
This is a bug of safary?
Sure a web browser can take this huge quantity of ram?
So, i hope that this behaviour will be fixed in next releases (imo 200 mb of Ram "max" for application and history should be ok for a third-part web browser)

There are some here who refuse to admit the problem, but it definately does exist and they really do need to fix it to give Safari any chance of really penetrating the market. For me it makes it unusable because I sometimes tend to open lots of websites during the day, but luckily, Opera 9.5 is well on its way to becoming superb and rivals Safari for speed, but easily betters it for memory usage, and is a million miles ahead for features and appearance without needing to go into configuration files.
If the Safari development team pull their heads out of their youknowwhats, stop being stubborn in trying to keep the "Apple ideals", and give it some features that it can benefit from being on a Windows platform, making the most of the terrific WebKit, Safari potentially could take the crown and in market share as well, because of the marketing potential.
The browser war is more interesting and fast moving than I ever remember it being now that WebKit has become open source. I'm not a religious man, but God bless Apple for making that decision.

  • Scratch disks and RAM usage

i would like to understand the relationship between scratch disks and RAM usage in Photoshop.
While i was working on a fairly big psb file (2gb), photoshop kept prompting that I was out of memory, but in fact the utilization was only 75% (i had 16gbs total, photoshop was only using 7gb, and i allowed PS to use up to 14gb in total). when it says out of memory, it was actually my scratch disk at fault ( i only set 1 scratch disk, which was my 120gb SSD running out of space).
any idea how I can optimize PS to use up all my RAM first before even touching my scratch disk? (short of using a RAMdisk, please).
    thanks!

I am curious about this also. I just reinstalled W-7--have 11 G of physical memory--a ton of hard drive empty space also, and I have been wondering why PS_CC is so slow--since basically I have only put my Security and Browser in addition to Adobe back on the Dell XPS computer..... At least now it does show the downloading percentage (like .psd file) , but that must be what is happening.  I do think that some of these "frozen" screens I have been experiencing, was because the program was using scratch disk, instead of the Ram... I came up from CS-5, and can't describe it in detail, but just realize how slow PS-CC is in most everything.  Going back and see if reallocating will help...

  • High RAM usage when system is 'idle' (EtreCheck)

    Hey guys,
First timer here. Ok here's my question :
I recently bought a secondhand Macbook pro 15 inch. For me it's a huge upgrade coming from a 2009 13 inch Macbook pro. Because a friend of mine wants to buy my old one I was doing some diagnostics on the 13 inch, which has 4 GB of RAM, and found out it had a lot of inactive RAM usage and wired usage, almost 2 GB, due to a lot of launchdaemons etc which were hogging the RAM. I used terminal to kill these agents and deamons and now that system is running smooth again. Maybe it's wise to mention that the 13 inch runs on ML.
3 days ago I did a clean Yosemite install on the 15 inch, swapped the HDD for a SSD. And already the activity monitor shows a whopping 4,28 GB of RAM usage while I'm typing this with just safari open. I thought I could do the same trick as I did with my 13 inch but it didn't help, had some java deamons and helpers and deleted those. In terminal I looked up everything via launchctl list and there's nothing unusual going on as far as I can see. I had VirtualBox for one day but uninstalled it using their uninstaller. I have no clue what's eating all this RAM.  Please help me out so I can be a proud owner of my second macbook for atleast 5 years to come. Thanks in advance.

The page outs indicate the OS has not recently swapped any memory to disk.
Apple made changes to 10.9 that are the same on 10.10. Memory will be used as much as possible. It is the fastest storage on the system, keeping it free is a waste of your time - data loads fastest from RAM.
    This is a good explanation…
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/#compressed-memory
The system also frees 'cache' memory when another process has more need to use it. Eventually it will swap to disk (which is slow) so the OS also compresses memory before swapping is needed.
Please avoid killing launchd jobs, many will simply restart or relaunch again later. Eventually you may kill one that hangs the OS & corrupts the disk via a forced shutdown.
I do suspect you may see issues when RAM does get low, but there is no evidence of that here. The memory pressure graph will show red when swapping - every other colour is fine. Wait until you see red & then note the top memory users.
If you don't want java installed you need to find removal instructions & get it all off the system, simply stopping the update checks will leave Java in an old state - terrible for security.
Also do you know what 'Live' is? It crashed recently, if it keeps doing that it may be worth a look, however it may just be one if the things that was effects by the killing spree

Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage by only 100mb from 1.5 to 1.4Gb.
What is in this 1.4 gb ?
I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.

You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • High kernel_task RAM Usage in Yosemite 10.10.1

    Hello All,
No matter what I'm running, I always have high RAM usage with kernel_task. I've looked around the other threads and never found a definitive solution. I wouldn't call it crippling to my system but I would like to resolve the issue. Below is a screenshot of my activity monitor, and my Etrecheck run. Please let me know anything I can do to reduce the RAM usage of this process.

The kernel_task memory usage is normal.

  • Kernel Task RAM Usage

I'm just wondering what's up with the RAM usage on my macbook. Right when I start up 500MB of RAM is being used (wired and active), 100MB of it being the kernel task. After a typical session of use, I close all programs and find that the RAM usage is about 800MB and the kernel task is using 250MB. Just wondering why the kernel task's RAM usage creeps up like that and doesn't go back down. It's just a little perplexing to have the same exact programs running and be down 300MB of free RAM.

I was having the same problem and looked into it, this may help:

  • [SOLVED] How to see real Linux Ram usage ? (diferent values)

    Hi everyone,
I am using Linux (Ubuntu at start and now Arch Linux) since 2004. I never had problems to understand it but now I have a problem that I cannot understand.
I have 2 computers (one is mine Asus 1215N and one is from my girlfriend Asus 1005HA), the first one has Arch Linux with Gnome3, and the seconde one has Arch Linux with Xfce4.
When I check the ram I get this (on my Asus 1215N):
    (Terminal 'free') :
    Total - 2055584
    Used - 497792
    Buffers/Cache Used - 164288
    (Gnome System Monitor)
    162,4 Mib (8,1%) de 2,0Gb
    Conky
    Ram Usage 488Mib/1.96Gib - 24%
So, apparently Gnome System Monitor only show me the Buffers/Cache Used memory (isn't that wrong ?) and the other two show me the "real" Ram usage (~488Mb)
Now on the seconde laptop conky show me the Buffers/Cache Used memory (when i look at it I see for example 120Mib but when I look at 'free' he says to me that the used memory is 500Mib.
So right now I don't really undestand who's wrong and who's right... did my Gnome3 really use 400mb at startup ? Did the xfce of my girlfriend really uses ~70-120mb at startup ?
(PS: we have the same conkyrc file.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help. But if the Buffers/Cache free is the real Free ram as I understand, then Free Memory is the allocated for software (but free)... That seem's good, but I have a question, I have made a teste, when I tried to open a lot of Chromium tabs (Chromium is a good example as it uses a LOT of ram..)
    Then the Buffers/Cache Free was at 1200Mib / 2000Mib (At free -m)
and Free Memory was at 19500 Mib / 2000Mib (At free -m)
And then the system starts using swap...
So if the Buffers are the really free ram and the Free Memory the all allocated memory and free why doesn't he cleans the allocated/cache before creating a new and starting using the swap ?
You seem to have the terms mixed up. Used memory is the cached memory and the memory allocated for applications grouped together. +/- buffers/cache is only the memory allocated for applications (It basically means used memory - buffers and cache).
As to why it starts swapping, I have no idea. It shouldn't, unless it's really out of RAM.
aliasbody wrote:Ps : And why did I got 2 diferent values from 2 pc's with the same conky configuration ? (since the first laptop show Free Ram and the second onde show Buffers/Cache)
That's very strange too. Are you absolutely sure that the configs are the same? Sounds like yours is missing the no_buffers option.

  • Increase RAM usage

In the pref file ti states that: "Note: After Effects will not use more that 2GB of RAM... See After Effects Help for information about enabling this option."
I have 4 GB ram. I have searched AE Help, Microsoft, adobe and Google, ..,. for 3 hours now. I cannot find out HOW to do this. Everyone talks about it but no one tells HOW.
I really would appreciate it if someone, anyone would be kind enough to give me a hint as to where I might fine information on HOW to do it. It is so frustrating that Adobe help files does not tell you how to find anything or use the search terms in stating that you can find something. It sure would make it easier to use their programs if they stated how. But maybe it is just that I am not a tech guru, only a lowly user.
    Thank you,

  • Router RAM usage

    Hi,
i have a Question to Router RAM usage.
My Router have 512MB of Memory.
When i do a "show version" I get this otput:
Cisco ********* processor with 491520K/32768K bytes of memory.
This means 491MB for CPU and 32MB for IO.
Now i do a "show memory" and get this output:
                    Head    Total(b)     Used(b)     Free(b)   Lowest(b)  Largest(b)
    Processor   6353EB60   430707644    14276428   416431216   416363448   413930428

Now here are only 430MB Total RAM for the Processor. Why this? What is with the other 60MB Memory? How does these values are in context with the Output of a  "show region"?
    Region Manager:

    Thomas

    hello Thomas,
in order to understand the difference between both output, i would highly recommend you to go through the following mentioned example:
the output of the show version indicate the physical amount of memory... however, the following mentioned memory summary indicate the >>>>>> allocated + total == process memeory...
    Router>show memory summary
                Head       Total (b)   Used (b)  Free (b)   Lowest (b)  Largest (b)
    Processor   60AB4ED0   5550384     2082996   3467388    3464996     3454608
    I/O         40000000   16777216    1937280   14839936   14839936    14838908
Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
Used = the amount of memory currently allocated.
Free = the amount of memory currently free.
Lowest = the lowest amount of free memory recorded by the router since it was last booted.
Largest = the largest free memory block currently available.
Here is what you can learn from the show processes memory command output:
    Router>show processes memory
    Total: 3149760, Used: 2334300, Free: 815460
PID   TTY   Allocated    Freed      Holding    Getbufs    Retbufs   Process
    0     0     226548       1252       1804376    0          0         *Initialization*
    0     0     320          5422288    320        0          0         *Scheduler*
    0     0     5663692      2173356    0          1856100    0         *Dead*
    1     0     264          264        3784       0          0         Load Meter
    2     2     5700         5372       13124      0          0         Virtual Exec
    3     0     0            0          6784       0          0         Check heaps
    4     0     96           0          6880       0          0         Pool Manager
    5     0     264          264        6784       0          0         Timers
Allocated = the total amount of bytes that have been allocated by the process since the router booted...
Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
so if you add the above allocated memory to the Total amount of memory, this should be equal to the process Pool >>> physical Dram...

  • Lightroom LR4 - Silly RAM usage!!

Lightroom LR4 - Silly RAM usage!!
    Edit Subject
Lightroom LR4 - Silly RAM usage!!
    Hi there
I'm stunned at the amount of RAM usage by LIghtroom. I have 6Gb of RAM using LR4 in 64 bit win7.
This is what happened when I opened lightroom to edit a shoot of jpgs, all of which were only about 3mb each ( I wasn't even editing 30Mb RAW files from my DSLRs )
    [i]figures from task manager/performance pane[/i]:
    No Lightroom
    0.99 GB
    Launch Lightroom and cat
    1.53 GB
    select next pic
    2.00 Gb
select next pic (no editing yet )
    2.20 GB
    after editing two pics
    3.13 GB
editing the 2nd pic in Nik Software Silver Efex pro 2 ( edit copy with lightroom adjustments ) and returning to lightroom
    2.85 GB
    but ....
Very soon, after only a few pics, the RAM usage is up to 5.5GB
This seems very disproportionate. Why for example would simply selecting another 3mb jpg eat up another 200Mb of RAM? And why after only a bit of editing on this 3mb pic in the develop module eat up another 900Mb of RAM?
The other highly annoying issue is that once Lightroom has decided to eat up nearly all my available RAM after editing only a few 3mb JPGs, things slow down rapidly. selecting another pic means everything locks up while their is vicious disk activity ( presumably swapping to swap file because Lightroom needs another 200Mb of ram for just one 3mb JPG )
it's not much fun having to quit LR every few images just to 'reset' thje amount of RAM.

OK, seem to be getting somewhere now
As stated in the OP I work in 64 bit Win 7. I have a win 7 32 bitpartition on the same machine I use for various things and also for testing Lightroom updates without upsetting my main LR work partition.
Earlier tonight I isntalled 4.1RC2 on my win 7 32 bit partition and ahve been working on a shoot. Interestingly the RAN usage seems much better managed. Instead of progressviely creeping up to a point of ARRGHHH!!!, with RC2 memory is released when switching images. Great news!!   Now bearing mind I still need to stest this in my 64 bit martition and I will isntall RC2 once confident it wont' fall right over, but positive os far.
ALSO, which I've just started testing is the negative cache disablement as described by Adfoibe Employee  Julie Kmoch here
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lr4_0_reacts_extremely_slow
    who said:
Here's an update on what changed in RC2 relative to Develop performance.
For starters, in RC1 we experimented with turning off sharpening while sliders were moving. We got a fair amount of negative feedback on that, and have reverted that behavior. Instead, we moved more of the rendering to a background thread, which keeps the sliders moving smoothly. One caveat with the behavior in RC2 is that those background renders can pile up if you're moving fast. The final 4.1 release will do a better job of trimming these when possible.
I worked with a number of you who volunteered to try an experiment a couple weeks ago that turned off something we call negative caching. The results were mixed; a couple people said it was a clear improvement, others didn't see a benefit. But I'll offer it here in case it helps others who find performance starts out reasonably then suddenly, consistently goes south until a restart.
What the following will do is turn off a cache which saves some of your most recent work done in Develop such that if you revisit a recently touched image, it loads faster. However, if our calculations are off, this cache can sometimes get too big and cause ACR to use virtual memory instead of RAM.
    To try it:
    1. Create a text file called “config.lua” and put the following line in it: AgNegativeCache.enabled = false
    2. Launch Lightroom, go to the Preferences dialog, Presets tab, and hit “Show Lightroom Presets Folder”.
    3. Close the Preferences dialog, quit Lightroom.
    4. Drop the attached config.lua file into the Lightroom folder that was opened in step 2 (do not put it in one of the preset subfolders). So the path to the file will look like this:
    Mac: /Users/[yourname]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/config.lua
    Win:  C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\config.lua
You’ll know this switch to turn the cache off is working if you see the “Loading...” symbol even when you revisit the previously edited image in Develop. (When caching is on, you can often revisit a recently edited photo without the Loading warning showing.)
    I'll report back laters

  • RAM usage by Adobe Flash Player spikes when playing online flash games with 3D graphics

Hi. I have recently noticed a spike in RAM usage by my flash player plug-in whenever I play online flash games that use a 3D graphics engine (for example, Farmville 2 and Chefville by Zynga). Apart from the numerous times I receive an error message that the plug-in has failed, my RAM usage goes above 70% from the regular 40% with the plug-in consuming more than 1Gb. I have experienced the problem with the updated version of Adobe Flash Player on the newest releases of Firefox, Chrome and RockMelt. This spike in usage usually leads to a crash of my GPU (ATI Mobility Rabeon 4650 - 2Gb) My specs are as follows:
    OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Processor - Core i5
    Speed - 2.27 GHz
    RAM - 4.00Gb (3.86 Gb usable)
    HDD - 500 Gb (465 Gb usable)
I should also note that the required specifications for the latest version of Flash Player (11.7.700.202) requires processing speeds of 2.33Ghz. Could that be the issue? I am still to attempt downgrading of my Flash version to see if that could help reduce the RAM usage. Are there any other suggestions out there?

Hmmm... Win 7 will run faster than Mavericks with 8Gb. Even my Vm of 7 runs faster once I get it past all the startup processes.
It may or may not be a connectivity problen since Windows uses a different protocol, even though it's on the same hardware. Usually though, what affects OS X will affect BootCamp too.
    What browser?

  • Widget RAM usage Question

Some questions of Widgets and RAM usage:
    a) when you close dashboard/widget RAM usage eventually drops to zero?
    b) when you de-activate widgets, do they use any RAM even if you activate Dashboard?
    c) anyone have experience with that 'turn widgets on at login' app? RAM usage?
    THanks.

    Hello,
As far as I know and having recently been testing on my own machines, Widgets do seem to play a pretty big role in RAM usage.
Strangely enough, I've noticed it on my G5 the most (probably because I use it more), that when Widgets are off, everything seems qiute a bit more snappy...apps launch MUCH faster, and actions take less time.
I really like Widgets for the most part, but there seem to be memory leaks the longer they're enabled, and the longer the machine is up and running.
Relaunching the dock seems to work SOME of the time...restarting seems to always work.
You can view what's going on in the Activity Monitor, located in your Utilities folder.
You can disable Widgets by this method in the Terminal:
    To turn Dashboard off:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
    To turn Dashboard on:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO
You have to restart the Dock after making either change for it to take effect:
    killall Dock
    or Onyx has this ability.
After doing this I would suggest a restart just to make sure.
After doing so, launch Activity Monitor to see your free RAM.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • Excessive Front Row RAM usage?

I have a Mac Mini, 1.6GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, that I use permanently connected to our TV. It's running Leopard, fully patched to 10.5.2. We have Front Row running pretty much permanently on it, and nothing else at all, except for Activity Monitor sometimes. There are 19GB free on the HDD, and the full 2GB is recognized.
I've noticed recently that Front Row will begin to slow down. It will start to take a second or two to respond to Remote key presses, movies will start to stutter, sometimes with audio playing but with frozen video.
When this happens, and I exit out of Front Row to the desktop, Activity Monitor shows Front Row using more than 1GB RAM. Killing Front Row and restarting it results in much faster Remote responses, and no longer any video issues. But it eventually comes back ... and the impression I have now is that the times between restarts is getting shorter.
About a month ago I switched to another account, and it seemed to be fixed, but the issue has returned in the past week.
I don't see anything relevant in the system logs, but maybe I'm looking the wrong place.
Has anyone else had this problem or can think of anything that might be a cause? I have Googled and found nothing seemingly relevant. I have two other Macs that don't show this problem, but they are not running as home theater computers.
    Thanks for any hints.

Thanks so much for this advice. I took the steps you advised:
    1. As for clearing the caches, I could not locate the three mobileme cache files you list. I deleted the other cache file and moved the plist file to the Desktop. Problem was not solved.
    2. I logged into another user account on my computer (an old user account I never deleted), and it appears at first glance at least that the problem does NOT exist in that account. (Hard to say for sure, because the spike in CPU/RAM usage is not constant and does not always appear right away. I waited a few minutes and didn't see the spike.)
    3. Back in my user account, I ran OnyX to repair permissions and do a general system clean-up. No change.
So if there is a corrupt file or folder, how can I identify and fix it?
    Thanks again for your help.
    Matt

  • Kernel_task high RAM usage

    Hi everybody,
I have same problem on both iMacs i use (iMac9,1 and iMac10,1). Both updated from Maveriks to Yosemite some months ago and since last 2 weeks kernel_task "eat" to much RAM.
I tried to solve with all kind of resets, move files from ACPI_SMC _PlatformPlugin.kext, hardware test, reinstall and restore from time machine and finaly also with a complete clean reinstall (without TM restore!). But kernel_task run with too much RAM usage.
I feel frustrated and I seem to be back like Windows users!
So, i think problem could be associated to some software upgrade (DropBox? Skype? Osx update? don't know). Anyone knows if there are usefull debugs system log for kernel_task usage?

On this report kernel_task ram is not displayed but you can see it on task manager image
    Any help is apreciated.
    Thank you!

There is nothing wrong with your kernel_task memory usage.  It is consistent with the amount of RAM you have installed.
The kernel_task manages virtual memory page tables.  The more RAM the the more table space consumed.  800MB memory usage for kernel_task is in line with having 8GB of RAM in your Mac.
My 16GB Macbook Pro kernel_task has 1.15GB of memory.  People with 32GB Macs, have more like 1.5GB.  And Macs with 4GB have something around 500MB more or less.
Tangent observation.  Unless you have a Paid LogMeIn account, the free version has been discontinued, and you should most likely remove the LogMeIn components via the LogMeIn uninstaller.  Your use of TeamViewer.com is a good substitute for the free LogMeIn.
You system has been up for just 7 and a half hours
        OS X 10.10.2 (14C109) - Time since boot: 7:21:25
    But you have
        117.96 GB    Page-ins
That averages out to 4.6MB per second.
Chances are you could either benefit from not running as many concurrent things (maybe remove the large number of kernel extensions, launch daemons, launch agents you have installed), maybe only run VirtualBox when you really need to run Windows (assuming it is Windows, but I guess it could be Linux or Solaris X86), or have fewer tabs open in your web browser, or run fewer Apps, especially the big memory hungry kind)
Or maybe you just need more RAM if you must have all these things installed and running all the time.
Just a thought.  But it is not kernel_task that is causing problems.  That is normal.
